We investigate how often geodesics have homology in a fixed set of the homology lattice of a compact Riemann surface. We prove that closed geodesics are equidistributed on any sets with asymptotic density with respect to a specific norm. We explain the analogues for free groups, conjugacy classes and discrete logarithms, in particular, we investigate the density of conjugacy classes with relatively prime discrete logarithms.
Given any rectangular polyhedron 3-manifold $P$ tiled with unit cubes, we find infinitely many explicit directions related to cubic algebraic numbers such that all half-infinite geodesics in these directions are uniformly distributed in $P$.
We show an asymptotic formula for the L^2 norm of the Eisenstein series restricted to a segment of a geodesic connecting infinity and an arbitrary real. For generic geodesics of this form, the asymptotic formula shows that the Eisenstein series satisfies restricted QUE. On the other hand, for rational geodesics, the Eisenstein series does not satisfy restricted quantum ergodicity. As an application, we show that the zero set of the Eisenstein series intersects every such geodesic segment, provided the spectral parameter is large. We also make analogous conjectures for the Maass cusp forms. In …
We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
We asymptotically estimate the variance of the number of lattice points in a thin, randomly rotated annulus lying on the surface of the sphere. This partially resolves a conjecture of Bourgain, Rudnick, and Sarnak. We also obtain estimates that are valid for all balls and annuli that are not too small. Our results have several consequences: for a conjecture of Linnik on sums of two squares and a "microsquare", a conjecture of Bourgain and Rudnick on the number of lattice points lying in small balls on the surface of the sphere, the covering radius of the sphere, and the distribution of lattice…
We show that the shape of a complex cubic field lies on the geodesic of the modular surface defined by the field's trace-zero form. We also prove a general such statement for all orders in étale Q-algebras. Applying a method of Manjul Bhargava and Piper H to results of Bhargava and Ariel Shnidman, we prove that the shapes lying on a fixed geodesic become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure as the discriminant of the complex cubic field goes to infinity. We also show that the shape of a complex cubic field is a complete invariant (within the family of all cubic fields).
In this book, we study equidistribution and counting problems concerning locally geodesic arcs in negatively curved spaces endowed with potentials, and we deduce, from the special case of tree quotients, various arithmetic applications to equidistribution and counting problems in non-Archimedean local fields.
Froyshov invariants are numerical invariants of rational homology three-spheres derived from gradings in monopole Floer homology. In the past few years, they have been employed to solve a wide range of problems in three and four-dimensional topology. In this paper, we look at connections with hyperbolic geometry for the class of minimal $L$-spaces. In particular, we study relations between Froyshov invariants and closed geodesics using ideas from analytic number theory. We discuss two main applications of our approach. First, we derive effective upper bounds for the Froyshov invariants of mini…
