Let $Γ$ be a group which is virtually free of rank at least 2 and let $\mathcal{F}_{td}(Γ)$ be the family of totally disconnected, locally compact groups containing $Γ$ as a co-compact lattice.
We prove that the values of the scale function with respect to groups in $\mathcal{F}_{td}(Γ)$ evaluated on the subset $Γ$ have only finitely many prime divisors. This can be thought of as a uniform property of the family $\mathcal{F}_{td}(Γ)$.
The automorphism groups of integral Lorentzian lattices act by isometries on hyperbolic space with finite covolume. In the case of reflective integral lattices, the automorphism groups are commensurable to arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups. However, for a fixed dimension, there is only finitely many reflective integral Lorentzian lattices, and these can only occur in small dimensions. The goal of this note is to construct embeddings of low-dimensional integral Lorentzian lattices into unimodular Lorentzian lattices associated to right-angled reflection groups. As an application, we const…
We prove that any word hyperbolic group which is virtually compact special (in the sense of Haglund and Wise) is conjugacy separable. As a consequence we deduce that all word hyperbolic Coxeter groups and many classical small cancellation groups are conjugacy separable. To get the main result we establish a new criterion for showing that elements of prime order are conjugacy distinguished. This criterion is of independent interest; its proof is based on a combination of discrete and profinite (co)homology theories.
We define a local Sylow subgroup of a totally disconnected, locally compact group G to be a maximal pro-p subgroup of an open compact subgroup of G. We use these subgroups to define the p-localisation of G, a locally virtually pro-p group which maps continuously and injectively to G with dense image, and describe the relationship between the scale and modular functions of G and those of its p-localisation. In the case of locally virtually prosoluble groups, we consider all primes simultaneously using local Sylow bases.
In this paper, we complete the classification of which compact 3-manifolds have a virtually compact special fundamental group by addressing the case of mixed 3-manifolds. A compact aspherical 3-manifold is mixed if has at least one JSJ torus and at least one hyperbolic block. We show the fundamental group of a mixed manifold M is virtually compact special iff M is chargeless, i.e. each interior Seifert fibered block has a trivial Euler number relative to the fibers of adjacent blocks.
Let G be a simple non-compact linear connected Lie group and H be a closed non-compact semisimple subgroup. We are interested in finding classes of homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper actions of discrete non virtually abelian subgroups of G. We develop an algorithm for finding such homogeneous spaces. As a testing example we obtain a list of all non-compact homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper action of a discrete and non virtually abelian subgroup of G in the case when G has rank at most 8, and H is a maximal proper semisimple subgroup.

Let $G$ be a virtually special group. Then the residual finiteness growth of $G$ is at most linear. This result cannot be found by embedding $G$ into a special linear group. Indeed, the special linear group $\text{SL}_k(\mathbb{Z})$, for $k > 2$, has residual finiteness growth $n^{k-1}$.
Let M be a compact oriented irreducible 3-manifold which is neither a graph manifold nor a hyperbolic manifold. We prove that the fundamental group of M is virtually special.
We show how a recent result of Hrushovsky implies that if an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group is locally compact, then the group is virtually nilpotent.
We give a description of elementary subgroups (in the sense of first-order logic) of finitely generated virtually free groups. In particular, we recover the fact that elementary subgroups of finitely generated free groups are free factors. Moreover, we give an algorithm that takes as input a finite presentation of a virtually free group $G$ and a finite subset $X$ of $G$, and decides if the subgroup of $G$ generated by $X$ is $\exists\forall\exists$-elementary. We also prove that every elementary embedding of an equationally noetherian group into itself is an automorphism.
Let $Σ$ be a compact orientable surface of finite type with at least one boundary component. Let $Γ\leq \textup{Mod}(Σ)$ be a non virtually solvable subgroup. We answer a question of Lubotzky by showing that there exists a finite dimensional homological representation $ρ$ of $\textup{Mod}(Σ)$ such that $ρ(Γ)$ is not virtually solvable. We then apply results of Lubotzky and Meiri to show that for any random walk on such a group the probability of landing on a power, or on an element with topological entropy $0$ both decrease exponentially in the length of the walk.
We study some properties of the varieties of deformations of free groups in compact Lie groups. In particular we prove a conjecture of Margulis and Soifer about the density of non-virtually free points in such variety, and a conjecture of Goldman on the ergodicity of the action of Aut(Fn) on such variety when n>2.
We prove that for any two continuous minimal (topologically free) actions of the infinite dihedral group on an infinite compact Hausdorff space, they are continuously orbit equivalent only if they are conjugate. We also show the above fails if we replace the infinite dihedral group with certain other virtually cyclic groups, e.g. the direct product of the integer group with any non-abelian finite simple group.
Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ be the mapping class group of a compact connected orientable surface $S$, possibly with punctures and boundary components, with negative Euler characteristic. We prove that for any infinite virtually abelian subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$, there is a subgroup $H'$ commensurable with $H$ such that the commensurator of $H$ equals the normalizer of $H'$. As a consequence we give, for each $n \geq 2$, an upper bound for the geometric dimension of $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ for the family of abelian subgroups of rank bounded by $n$. These results generalize work by Juan-Pineda--Truj…
Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group. We recall the well-understood finite radical $Δ^+$ and FC-centre $Δ$, and introduce a $p$-adic analogue of Roseblade's subgroup $\mathrm{nio}(G)$, the unique largest orbitally sound open normal subgroup of $G$. Further, when $G$ is nilpotent-by-finite, we introduce the finite-by-(nilpotent $p$-valuable) radical $\mathbf{FN}_p(G)$, an open characteristic subgroup of $G$ contained in $\mathrm{nio}(G)$. By relating the already well-known theory of isolators with Lazard's notion of $p$-saturations, we introduce the isolated lower central (resp. isolate…
We prove that there is a second countable locally compact group that does not embed as a closed subgroup in any compactly generated locally compact group, and discuss various related embedding and non-embedding results.
We give a new, effective proof of the separability of cubically convex-cocompact subgroups of special groups. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is a virtually compact special hyperbolic group, and $Q\leq G$ is a $K$-quasiconvex subgroup, then any $g\in G-Q$ of word-length at most $n$ is separated from $Q$ by a subgroup whose index is polynomial in $n$ and exponential in $K$. This generalizes a result of Bou-Rabee and the authors on residual finiteness growth and a result of the second author on surface groups.
We prove a rigidity theorem for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups: If $Γ_1$, $Γ_2$ are two semi-arithmetic lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ virtually admitting modular embeddings and $f\colonΓ_1\toΓ_2$ is a group isomorphism that respects the notion of congruence subgroups, then $f$ is induced by an inner automorphism of $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{R})$.
We construct a set of $27\times 27$ unitary matrices which give an explicit embedding of the Tits group in the compact real form of the Lie group of type $E_6$. A subset gives an embedding of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(25)$ in $F_4$.
A group $Γ$ is said to be finitely non-co-Hopfian, or renormalizable, if there exists a self-embedding $φ\colon Γ\to Γ$ whose image is a proper subgroup of finite index. Such a proper self-embedding is called a renormalization for $Γ$. In this work, we associate a dynamical system to a renormalization $φ$ of $Γ$. The discriminant invariant ${\mathcal D}_φ$ of the associated Cantor dynamical system is a profinite group which is a measure of the asymmetries of the dynamical system. If ${\mathcal D}_φ$ is a finite group for some renormalization, we show that $Γ/C_φ$ is virtually nilpotent, where …
We prove that, if a group is relatively hyperbolic, the parabolic subgroups are virtually nilpotent if and only if there exists a hyperbolic space with bounded geometry on which it acts geometrically finitely. This provides, by use of M. Bonk and O. Schramm embedding theorem, a very short proof of the finiteness of asymptotic dimension of relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually nilpotent parabolic subgroups (which is known to imply Novikov conjectures
Seeking for a converse to a well-known theorem by Borel-Tits, we address the question whether the group of rational points G(k) of an anisotropic reductive k-group may admit a split spherical BN-pair. We show that if k is a perfect field or a local field, then such a BN-pair must be virtually trivial. We also consider arbitrary compact groups and show that the only abstract BN-pairs they can admit are spherical, and even virtually trivial provided they are split.
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green's function of the corresponding random walk. We give a complete topological characterization of the Martin boundary of finitely supported random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. In particular, in the case of nonuniform lattices in the real hyperbolic space H n , we show that the Martin boundary coincides with the CAT (0) boundary of the truncated space, and thus when n = 3, is homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet.
Whenever a finitely generated group $G$ acts properly discontinuously by isometries on a metric space $X$, there is an induced uniform embedding (a Lipschitz and uniformly proper map) $ρ: G \rightarrow X$ given by mapping $G$ to an orbit. We study when there is a difference between a finitely generated group $G$ acting properly on a contractible $n$-manifold and uniformly embedding into a contractible $n$-manifold. For example, Kapovich and Kleiner showed that there are torsion-free hyperbolic groups that uniformly embed into a contractible $3$-manifold but only virtually act on a contractible…
We introduce a class of countable groups by some abstract group-theoretic conditions. It includes linear groups with finite amenable radical and finitely generated residually finite groups with some non-vanishing $\ell^2$-Betti numbers that are not virtually a product of two infinite groups. Further, it includes acylindrically hyperbolic groups. For any group $Γ$ in this class we determine the general structure of its possible lattice embeddings, i.e. of all compactly generated, locally compact groups that contain $Γ$ as a lattice. This leads to a precise description of possible non-uniform la…
Given a class of compact spaces, we ask which groups can be maximal parabolic subgroups of a relatively hyperbolic group whose boundary is in the class. We investigate the class of 1-dimensional connected boundaries. We get that any non-torsion infinite f.g. group is a maximal parabolic subgroup of some relatively hyperbolic group with connected one-dimensional boundary without global cut point. For boundaries homeomorphic to a Sierpinski carpet or a 2-sphere, the only maximal parabolic subgroups allowed are virtual surface groups (hyperbolic, or virtually $\mathbb{Z} + \mathbb{Z}$).
We introduce an obstruction to the existence of a coarse embedding of a given group or space into a hyperbolic group, or more generally into a hyperbolic graph of bounded degree. The condition we consider is "admitting exponentially many fat bigons", and it is preserved by a coarse embedding between graphs with bounded degree. Groups with exponential growth and linear divergence (such as direct products of two groups one of which has exponential growth, solvable groups that are not virtually nilpotent, and uniform higher-rank lattices) have this property and hyperbolic graphs do not, so the fo…
We give a simplified approach to the cubulation of small-cancellation quotients of free products of cubulated groups. We construct fundamental groups of compact nonpositively curved cube complexes that do not virtually split.
Let M be a graph manifold. We show that π_1M is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved cube complex if and only if M is chargeless. We also prove that in that case π_1M is virtually compact special.
We show (using results of Wise and of Woodhouse) that a tubular group is always virtually special (meaning that it has a finite index subgroup embedding in a RAAG) if the underlying graph is a tree. We also adapt Gardam and Woodhouse's argument on tubular groups which double cover 1-relator groups to show there exist 1-relator groups which are CAT(0) but not residually finite.
We study algebraic properties on a group G such that if the discrete group G has these properties then every locally compact shift continuous topology on G with adjoined zero is either compact, or discrete. We introduce electorally flexible and electorally stable groups and establish their properties. In particular, we prove that every group with an infinite cyclic subgroup of an infinite index and every uncountable commutative group are electorally flexible, and show that every countable locally finite group is electorally stable. The main result of the paper is the following: if G is a discr…
In this paper, we show that, if a group $G$ acts geometrically on a geodesically complete CAT(0) space $X$ which contains at least one point with a CAT(-1) neighborhood, then $G$ must be either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. As a consequence, the fundamental group of a compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is nonpositive everywhere and negative in at least one point is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. This statement provides a precise interpretation of an idea expressed by Gromov in his paper Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups.
Let $Γ$ be an irreducible lattice in a product of two locally compact groups and assume that $Γ$ is densely embedded in a profinite group $K$. We give necessary conditions which imply that the left translation action $Γ\curvearrowright K$ is "virtually" cocycle superrigid: any cocycle $w:Γ\times K\rightarrowΔ$ with values in a countable group $Δ$ is cohomologous to a cocycle which factors through the map $Γ\times K\rightarrowΓ\times K_0$, for some finite quotient group $K_0$ of $K$. As a corollary, we deduce that any ergodic profinite action of $Γ=\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z[S^{-1}])$ is virtually c…
It is shown that every accessible group which is integrable orbit equivalent to a free group is virtually free. Moreover, we also show that any integrable orbit-equivalence between finitely generated groups extends to their end compactifications.
We study algebraic and topological properties of topological semigroups containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup C(p,q). We prove that each topological semigroup S with pseudocompact square contains no dense copy of C(p,q). On the other hand, we construct a (consistent) example of a pseudocompact (countably compact) Tychonov semigroup containing a copy of C(p,q).
In this paper, we show that a nontrivial compact graph manifold is nonpositively curved if and only if its fundamental group virtually embeds into a right-angled Artin group. As a consequence, nonpositively curved graph manifolds have linear fundamental groups.
