We construct a desingularization of the ``main component'' $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ of the moduli space $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ of genus-one stable maps into the complex projective space $\Bbb{P}^n$. As a bonus, we obtain desingularizations of certain natural sheaves over $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$. Such desingularizations are useful for integrating natural cohomology classes on $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ using localization. In turn, these classes can be used to compute the genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections and classical enumerative invariants of projective spaces involving genus-one curves. The desingularization of $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}^0(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ is obtained by sequentially blowing up $\bar{\mathfrak M}_{1,k}(\Bbb{P}^n,d)$ along ``bad'' subvarieties. At the end of the process, we are left with a modification of the main component, which turns out to be nonsingular.
We describe an algebro-geometric approach to Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the main component of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective space. The new approach provides complete local structural results for this moduli space as well as for the desingularization of the entire moduli space and should fully extend to higher genera.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 3$ and $M_0$ be the moduli space of rank 2 semistable bundles over $X$ with trivial determinant. There are three desingularizations of this singular moduli space constructed by Narasimhan-Ramanan \cite{NR}, Seshadri \cite{Se1} and Kirwan \cite{k5} respectively. The relationship between them has not been understood so far. The purpose of this paper is to show that there is a morphism from Kirwan's desingularization to Seshadri's, which turns out to be the composition of two blow-downs. In doing so, we will show that the singularities of $M_0$ …
Let C be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a fixed line bundle L on C, let M_C(r,L) be the coarse moduli space of semistable vector bundles E over C of rank r and determinant L. We show that the Brauer group of any desingularization of M_C(r, L)$ is trivial.
We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. In this note, we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}_{g+2,g,4}$ is irreducible without any restriction on the genus $g$. Our result augments the irreducibility result obtained earlier by Hristo Iliev(2006), in which several low genus $g\le 10$ cases have been left untreated.
We prove that the orbifold desingularization of the moduli space of stable maps of genus g = 1 recently constructed by Vakil and Zinger has vanishing rational cohomology groups in odd degree k < 10.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g\geq 3$. Let $\mathbf{M}_2$ be the moduli space of semistable rank $2$ Higgs bundles with trivial determinant over $X$. We construct a desingularization $\mathbf{S}$ of $\mathbf{M}_2$ as a closed subvariety of a moduli space. We prove that $\mathbf{S}$ is a nonsingular variety containing the stable locus of $\mathbf{M}_2$ as an open dense subvariety. On the other hand, there is another desingularization $\mathbf{K}$ of $\mathbf{M}_2$ obtained from Kirwan's algorithm. We show that $\mathbf{S}$ can be obtained after two blow-downs of $\math…
We prove that the moduli space of stable maps of degree 2 to the moduli space of rank 2 stable bundles of fixed determinant O(-x) over a smooth projective curve of genus g>2 has two irre- ducible components which intersect transversely. One of them is Kir- wan's partial desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2 semistable bundles with determinant isomorphic to O(y-x) for some y in X. The other component is the partial desingularization of PHom(sl(2)^*;W)//PGL(2) for a vector bundle W of rank g over the Jacobian of X. We also show that the Hilbert scheme H, the Chow scheme C of conics in …
We study birational maps among 1) the moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $4m+2$ on a smooth quadric surface, 2) the moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $m^{2}+3m+2$ on $\mathbb{P}^{3}$, 3) Kontsevich's moduli space of genus zero stable maps of degree 2 to Grassmannian $Gr(2, 4)$. A regular birational morphism from 1) to 2) is described in terms of Fourier-Mukai transform. The map from 3) to 2) is Kirwan's partial desingularization. Also we investigate several geometric properties of 1) by using the variation of moduli spaces of stable …
We study the Variations of mixed Hodge structures (VMHS) associated to a pencil ${\cal X}$ (parametrised by an open set $B \subset {\Bbb P}^1$) of equisingular hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in ${\Bbb P}^{4}$ with exactly $m$ ordinary double points as singularities as well as the variations of Hodge structures (VHS) associated to the desingularization of this family $ \widetilde{\cal X}$. The case where exactly $l \le m $ of those double points are in algebraic general position (short:agp) is studied in detail and determine the possible limiting mixed Hodge structures (LMHS) associated to each of…
We describe a method for counting maps of curves of given genus (and variable moduli) to $\Bbb P^2$, essentially by splitting the $\Bbb P^2$ in two; then specialising to the case of genus 0 we show that the method of quantum cohomology may be viewed as the 'mirror' of the former method where one splits the $\Bbb P^1$ rather than the $\Bbb P^2$, and we indicate a proof of the associativity of quantum multiplication based on this idea.
We construct a smooth Artin stack parameterizing the stable weighted curves of genus one with twisted fields and prove that it is isomorphic to the blowup stack of the moduli of genus one weighted curves studied by Hu and Li. This leads to a blowup-free construction of Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective spaces. This construction provides the cornerstone of the theory of stacks with twisted fields, which is thoroughly studied in arXiv:2005.03384 and leads to a blowup-free resolution of the stable map moduli of genus two.
A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\Bbb R C\to\Bbb{RP}^1$. Let $A_1,\dots,A_n$ be connected components of $C$. In a recent paper M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_n(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $A_i$. We describe the separating semigroup for hyperelliptic curves and for genus 3 curves.
A quadric in $\R P^3$ cuts a curve of degree 6 on a cubic surface in $\R P^3$. The papers classifies the nonsingular curves cut in this way on non-singular cubic surfaces up to homeomorphism. Two issues new in the study related to the first part of the 16th Hilbert problem appear in this classification. One is the distribution of the components of the curve between the components of the non-connected cubic surface which turns out to depend on the patterns of arrangements (see Theorem 1). The other is presence of positive genus among the components of the complement and genus-related restrictio…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \ge 3$ and let $M_0$ be the moduli space of semistable bundles over $X$ of rank 2 with trivial determinant. Three different desingularizations of $M_0$ have been constructed by Seshadri \cite{Se1}, Narasimhan-Ramanan \cite{NR}, and Kirwan \cite{k5}. In this paper, we construct a birational morphism from Kirwan's desingularization to Narasimhan-Ramanan's, and prove that the Narasimhan-Ramanan's desingularization (called the moduli space of Hecke cycles) is the intermediate variety between Kirwan's and Seshadri's as was conjectured recently in \ci…
We prove the following result which was conjectured by Stichtenoth and Xing: let $g$ be the genus of a projective, irreducible non-singular curve over the finite field $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ and whose number of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$-rational points attains the Hasse-Weil bound; then either $4g\le (q-1)^2$ or $2g=(q-1)q$.
In this paper we study the moduli stack ${\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$ of curves of arithmetic genus 1 with n marked points, forming a nonspecial divisor. In arXiv:1511.03797 this stack was realized as the quotient of an explicit scheme $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$, affine of finite type over ${\Bbb P}^{n-1}$, by the action of ${\Bbb G}_m^n$ . Our main result is an explicit description of the corresponding GIT semistable loci in $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$. This allows us to identify some of the GIT quotients with some of the modular compactifications of ${\mathcal M}_{1,n}$ defined …
In this paper we begin to study curves on a weighted projective plane with one trivial weight, ${\mathbb P}(1,m,n)$, by determining the genus of curves of Fermat type. These are curves defined by a ``homogeneous'' polynomial analagous to the one from Fermat's last theorem. We begin by finding local coordinates for the standard affine cover of the plane, and then prove that the curve is smooth. This is done by pulling the curve up to the surface's desingularization. Then a map from the curve to ${\mathbb P^1}$ is constructed, and it's ramification divisor is determined. We conclude by applying …
This is the first in a pair of papers developing a framework for the application of logarithmic structures in the study of singular curves of genus $1$. We construct a smooth and proper moduli space dominating the main component of Kontsevich's space of stable genus $1$ maps to projective space. A variation on this theme furnishes a modular interpretation for Vakil and Zinger's famous desingularization of the Kontsevich space of maps in genus $1$. Our methods also lead to smooth and proper moduli spaces of pointed genus $1$ quasimaps to projective space. Finally, we present an application to t…
The space of smooth genus 0 curves in projective space has a natural smooth compactification: the moduli space of stable maps, which may be seen as the generalization of the classical space of complete conics. In arbitrary genus, no such natural smooth model is expected, as the space satisfies ``Murphy's Law''. In genus 1, however, the situation remains beautiful. We give a natural smooth compactification of the space of elliptic curves in projective space, and describe some of its properties. This space is a blow up of the space of stable maps. It can be interpreted as blowing up the most sin…
In this paper we investigate generalized theta divisors $Θ_r$ in the moduli spaces $\mathcal{U}_C(r,r)$ of semistable vector bundles on a curve $C$ of genus $2$. We provide a desingularization $Φ$ of $Θ_r$ in terms of a projective bundle $π:\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V})\to\mathcal{U}_C(r-1,r)$ which parametrizes extensions of stable vector bundles on the base by $\mathcal{O}_C$. Then, we study the composition of $Φ$ with the well known theta map $θ$. We prove that, when it is restricted to the general fiber of $π$, we obtain a linear embedding.
We consider the stack of stable curves of genus g with a given dual graph and we give an explicit desingularization of its closure in the moduli stack of stable curves. We study in particular the one-dimensional substack of curves with at least 3g-4 nodes.
The level moduli space $A_g^{4,8}$ is mapped to the projective space by means of gradients of odd Theta functions, such a map turning out no to be injective in the genus 2 case. In this work a congruence subgroup $Γ$ is located between $Γ_2(4,8)$ and $Γ_2(2,4)$ in such a way the map factors on the related level moduli space $A_Γ$, the new map being injective on $A_Γ$. Satake's compactification $\text{Proj}A(Γ)$ and the desingularization $\text{Proj}S(Γ)$ are also due to be investigated, since the map does not extend to the boundary of the compactification; to aim at this, an algebraic descript…
Let M be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 Higgs pairs (V,ϕ) with trivial determinant over a smooth projective curve X of genus g>1. We compute the stringy E-function of M and prove that there does not exist a symplectic desingularization of M for g>2.
In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $2$. Following a method by O' Grady, we construct a semismall desingularization $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{Dol}^G$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{Dol}^G$ of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles of degree 0 for $G=GL(2,\mathbb{C}), SL(2,\mathbb{C})$. By the decomposition theorem by Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne one can write the cohomology of $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{Dol}^G$ as a direct sum of the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal{M}_{Dol}^G$ plus other summands supported on the singular locus. We use this splitting to compute the intersection cohomology of $…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve of genus at least two. Let $N$ be a connected component of the moduli space of semistable principal ${\rm PGL}_r({\mathbb C})$- bundles over $X$; it is a normal unirational complex projective variety. We prove that the Brauer group of a desingularization of $N$ is trivial.
We exhibit a smooth compactification of the moduli space of elliptic curves in a product of projective spaces with tangency along a subset of its toric boundary divisors. This is a Vakil--Zinger type of desingularization for maps to a product of projective spaces using ideas of elliptic singularities and logarithmic geometry, extending the recent work by Ranganathan--Santos-Parker--Wise. We use this to construct the virtual fundamental classes of the spaces of genus 1 maps to a special class of simple normal crossings pairs.
Given a relatively minimal fibration $f: S \to \Bbb P^1$ on a rational surface $S$ with general fiber $C$ of genus $g$, we investigate under what conditions the inequality $6(g-1)\le K_f^2$ occurs, where $K_f$ is the canonical relative sheaf of $f$. We give sufficient conditions for having such inequality, depending on the genus and gonality of $C$ and the number of certain exceptional curves on $S$. We illustrate how these results can be used for constructing fibrations with the desired property. For fibrations of genus $11\le g\le 49$ we prove the inequality: $$ 6(g-1) +4 -4\sqrt g \le K_f^2…
