A quadric in $\R P^3$ cuts a curve of degree 6 on a cubic surface in $\R P^3$. The papers classifies the nonsingular curves cut in this way on non-singular cubic surfaces up to homeomorphism.
Two issues new in the study related to the first part of the 16th Hilbert problem appear in this classification. One is the distribution of the components of the curve between the components of the non-connected cubic surface which turns out to depend on the patterns of arrangements (see Theorem 1). The other is presence of positive genus among the components of the complement and genus-related restrictions (see Theorems 3 and 4).
Let $\Bbbk$ be any field of characteristic zero, $X$ be a cubic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3_{\Bbbk}$ and $G$ be a group acting on $X$. We show that if $X(\Bbbk) \ne \varnothing$ and $G$ is not trivial and not a group of order $3$ acting in a special way then the quotient surface $X / G$ is rational over $\Bbbk$. For the group $G$ of order $3$ we construct examples of both rational and nonrational quotients of both rational and nonrational $G$-minimal cubic surfaces over $\Bbbk$.
A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called cubic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than three. In the present paper a rough classification scheme for cubic transformations of $\Bbb R^2$ is suggested. It is based on quartic forms associated with these transformations.
A polynomial transformation of the real plane $\Bbb R^2$ is a mapping $\Bbb R^2\to\Bbb R^2$ given by two polynomials of two variables. Such a transformation is called cubic if the degrees of its polynomials are not greater than three. It turns out that cubic transformations are associated with some binary and quaternary quartic forms. In the present paper these forms are defined and studied.
Let $\scr A^*=\{l_1,l_2,\cdots,l_n\}$ be a line arrangement in $\Bbb{CP}^2$, i.e., a collection of distinct lines in $\Bbb{CP}^2$. Let $L(\scr A^*)$ be the set of all intersections of elements of $A^*$ partially ordered by $X\leq Y\Leftrightarrow Y\subseteq X$. Let $M(\scr A^*)$ be $\Bbb{CP}^2-\bigcup\scr A^*$ where $\bigcup\scr A^*= \bigcup\{l_i\colon\ 1\leq i\leq n\}$. The central problem of the theory of arrangement of lines in $\Bbb{CP}^2$ is the relationship between $M(\scr A^*)$ and $L(\scr A^*)$.
For a smooth plane cubic $B$, we count curves $C$ of degree $d$ such that the normalizations of $C\backslash B$ are isomorphic to $\Bbb A^1$, for $d\leq7$ (for $d=7$ under some assumption). We also count plane rational quartic curves intersecting $B$ at only one point.
We suggest a short proof of O.Benoist and O.Wittenberg theorem (arXiv:1907.10859) which states that for each real non-singular cubic hypersurface $X$ of dimension $\ge 2$ the real lines on $X$ generate the whole group $H_1(X(\Bbb R);\Bbb Z/2)$.
In this paper, we continue the study of the relation between rational points of rational elliptic surfaces and plane curves. As an application, we give first examples of Zariski pairs of cubic-line arrangements that do not involve inflectional tangent lines.
We give two examples of plane curve arrangements of pencil type which are very close to line arrangements, though the action of the monodromy operator on the first cohomology group of the Milnor Fiber has eigenvalues of order 5 and 6, showing that surprising situations can occur for larger classes of curve arrangements than for line arrangements. Our computations rely on the algorithm given by A. Dimca and G. Sticlaru which detects the non trivial monodromy eigenspaces of free curves.
A $k$-Artal arrangement is a reducible algebraic curve composed of a smooth cubic and $k$ inflectional tangents. By studying the topological properties of their subarrangements, we prove that for $k=3,4,5,6$, there exist Zariski pairs of $k$-Artal arrangements. These Zariki pairs can be distinguished in a geometric way by the number of collinear triples in the set of singular points contained in the cubic.
We characterize the image of the period map for cubic fourfolds with at worst simple singularities as the complement of an arrangement of hyperplanes in the period space. It follows then that the GIT compactification of the moduli space of cubic fourfolds is isomorphic to the Looijenga's compactification associated to this arrangement. This work builds on and is a natural continuation of our previous paper on the GIT compactification of the moduli space of cubic fourfolds.
Let $S$ be an elliptic surface over a smooth curve $C$ with a section $O$. We denote its generic fiber by $E_S$. For a divisor $D$ on $S$, we canonically associate a $C(C)$-rational point $P_D$. In this note, we give a description of $P_D$ of $E_S$, when the rank of the group of $C(C)$-rational points is one. We apply our description to refine our result on a Zariski pair for a cubic-line arrangement.
The purpose of this note is to report, in narrative rather than rigorous style, about the nice geometry of $6$-division points on the Fermat cubic $F$ and various conics naturally attached to them. Most facts presented here were derived by symbolic algebra programs and the idea of the note is to propose a research direction for searching for conceptual proofs of facts stated here and their generalisations. Extensions in several directions seem possible (taking curves of higher degree and contact to $F$, studying higher degree curves passing through higher order division points on $F$, studying…
We present a new normal form for cubic surfaces that is well suited for p-adic geometry, as it reveals the intrinsic del Pezzo combinatorics of the 27 trees in the tropicalization. The new normal form is a polynomial with eight terms, written in moduli from the E6 hyperplane arrangement. If such a surface is tropically smooth then its 27 tropical lines are distinct. We focus on explicit computations, both symbolic and p-adic numerical.
Let $X$ be a surface of degree $n$, projected onto $\mathbb{CP}^2$. The surface has a natural Galois cover with Galois group $S_n.$ It is possible to determine the fundamental group of a Galois cover from that of the complement of the branch curve of $X.$ In this paper we survey the fundamental groups of Galois covers of all surfaces of small degree $n \leq 4$, that degenerate to a nice plane arrangement, namely a union of $n$ planes such that no three planes meet in a line. We include the already classical examples of the quadric, the Hirzebruch and the Veronese surfaces and the degree $4$ em…
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, ..., D_{\ell}\} $ be a multi-degree arrangement with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbf{P}^{n} $, with degrees $ d_{1}, ..., d_{\ell} $; let $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{n}}^{1}(\log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. First we prove a Torelli type theorem when $ \mathcal{D} $ has a sufficiently large number of components by recovering them as unstable smooth irreducible degree-$ d_{i} $ hypersurfaces of $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{n}}^{1}(\log \mathcal{D}) $. Then, when $ n = 2 $, by describing the moduli spaces containing $ Ω_{\mathbf{P}^{2}…
The classical statement of Cayley-Salmon that there are 27 lines on every smooth cubic surface in P^3 fails to hold under tropicalization: a tropical cubic surface in TP^3 often contains infinitely many tropical lines. Under mild genericity assumptions, we show that when embedded using the Eckardt triangles in the anticanonical system, tropical cubic del Pezzo surfaces contain exactly 27 tropical lines. In the non-generic case, which we identify explicitly, we find up to 27 extra lines, no multiple of which lifts to a curve on the cubic surface. We realize the moduli space of stable anticanoni…
Similarly to the linear Harbourne constant recently defined, we study the elliptic $H$-constants of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ and Abelian surfaces. We exhibit configurations of smooth plane cubic curves whose Harbourne index is arbitrarily close to $-4$. As a Corollary, we obtain that the global $H$-constant of any surface $X$ is less or equal to $-4$. Related to these problems, we moreover give a new inequality for the number and multiplicities of singularities of elliptic curves arrangements on Abelian surfaces, inequality which has a close similarity to the one of Hirzebruch for arrangements of line…
Let $X$ be a closed subscheme of codimension $e$ in a projective space. One says that $X$ satisfies property ${\bf N}_{d,p}$, if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $<d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$. The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties satisfying property ${\bf N}_{2,e}$ are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: projective surfaces in $\Bbb P^5$ satisfying property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$. In particular, we give a classifi…
The image of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement under a monomial map can be tropicalized combinatorially using matroid theory. We apply this to classical moduli spaces that are associated with complex reflection arrangements. Starting from modular curves, we visit the Segre cubic, the Igusa quartic, and moduli of marked del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 2 and 3. Our primary example is the Burkhardt quartic, whose tropicalization is a 3-dimensional fan in 39-dimensional space. This effectuates a synthesis of concrete and abstract approaches to tropical moduli of genus 2 curves.
