We define the reflection of a random walk at a general barrier and derive, in case the increments are light tailed and have negative mean, a necessary and sufficient criterion for the global maximum of the reflected process to be finite a.s. If it is finite a.s., we show that the tail of the distribution of the global maximum decays exponentially fast and derive the precise rate of decay. Finally, we discuss an example from structural biology that motivated the interest in the reflection at a general barrier.
The joint distribution of value and local time for Brownian Motion has been reported by Borodin and Salminen. Its asymptotic behavior for recurrent random walk has been presented by Jain and Pruitt. Motivated by the need for queue size control during a pandemic (Hassin, Meilijson and Perlman), the current study presents closed form formulas for random walk and reflected random walk with $\pm 1$ increments, not necessarily fair.
In this paper we analyze a Lévy process reflected at a general (possibly random) barrier. For this process we prove Central Limit Theorem for the first passage time. We also give the finite-time first passage probability asymptotics.
We establish several existence, uniqueness and comparison results for $L^1$ solutions of non-reflected BSDEs and reflected BSDEs with one and two continuous barriers under the assumption that the generator $g$ satisfies a one-sided Osgood condition together with a very general growth condition in $y$, a uniform continuity condition and/or a sub-linear growth condition in $z$, and a generalized Mokobodzki condition which relates the growth of $g$ and that of the barriers. This generalized Mokobodzki condition is proved to be necessary for existence of $L^1$ solutions of the reflected BSDEs. We …
We consider reflected backward stochastic differential equations, with two barriers, defined on probability spaces equipped with filtration satisfying only the usual assumptions of right continuity and completeness. As for barriers we assume that there are càdlàg processes of class D that are completely separated. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for integrable final condition and integrable monotone generator. An application to zero-sum Dynkin game is given.
In this short note we consider RBSDE with Lipschitz drivers and barrier processes that are optional and right upper semicontinuous. We treat the case when the barrier can be represented as a decreasing limit of cadlag barriers. We combine well known existence results for cadlag barriers with comparison arguments for the control process to construct solutions. Finally, we highlight the connection of such RBSDEs with usual cadlag BSDEs.
In this paper, we study doubly reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equations defined on probability spaces equipped with filtration satisfying only the usual assumptions of right continuity and completeness in the case where the barriers L and U don't satisfy any regularity assumption (without right continuity). We suppose that the barriers L and U and their left limits are completely separated and we show existence and uniqueness of the solution.
We consider reflected backward stochastic differential equations with two general optional barriers. The solutions to these equations have the so-called regulated trajectories, i.e trajectories with left and right finite limits. We prove the existence and uniqueness of $\mathbb L^p$ solutions, $p\geq 1$, and show that the solutions may be approximated by a modified penalization method.
We consider reflected backward stochastic differential equations with two optional barriers of class (D) satisfying Mokobodzki's separation condition and coefficient which is only continuous and non-increasing. We assume that data are merely integrable and the terminal time is an arbitrary (possibly infinite) stopping time. We study the problem of existence and uniqueness of solutions, and their connections with the value process in nonlinear Dynkin games.
This paper proves the existence and uniqueness of a solution to doubly reflected backward stochastic differential equations where the coefficient is stochastic Lipschitz, by means of the penalization method.
We introduce a family of two-dimensional reflected random walks in the positive quadrant and study their Martin boundary. While the minimal boundary is systematically equal to a union of two points, the full Martin boundary exhibits an instability phenomenon, in the following sense: if some parameter associated to the model is rational (resp.\ non-rational), then the Martin boundary is countable, homeomorphic to $\mathbb Z\cup\{\pm\infty\}$ (resp.\ uncountable, homeomorphic to $\mathbb R\cup\{\pm\infty\}$). Such instability phenomena are very rare in the literature. Along the way of proving th…
In this paper, a solution is given to reflected backward doubly stochastic differential equations when the barrier is not necessarily right-continuous, and the noise is driven by two independent Brownian motions and an independent Poisson random measure. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is shown, firstly when the coefficients are stochastic Lipschitz, and secondly by weakening the conditions on the stochastic growth coefficient.
Reflected random walk in higher dimension arises from an ordinary random walk (sum of i.i.d. random variables): whenever one of the reflecting coordinates becomes negative, its sign is changed, and the process continues from that modified position. One-dimensional reflected random walk is quite well understood from work in 7 decades, but the multidimensional model presents several new difficulties. Here we investigate recurrence questions.
In this paper we deal with the problem of the existence and the uniqueness of a solution for one dimensional reflected backward stochastic differential equations with two strictly separated barriers when the generator is allowing a logarithmic growth $(|y||\ln|y||+|z|\sqrt{|\ln|z||})$ in the state variables $y$ and $z$. The terminal value $ξ$ and the obstacle processes $(L_t)_{0\leq t\leq T}$ and $(U_t)_{0\leq t\leq T}$ are $L^p$-integrable for a suitable $p > 2$. The main idea is to use the concept of local solution to construct the global one. As applications, we broaden the class of functio…
In this work, we focus on the stationary analysis of a specific class of continuous time Markov-modulated reflected random walks in the quarter plane with applications in the modelling of two-node Markov-modulated queueing networks with coupled queues. The transition rates of the two-dimensional process depend on the state of a finite state Markovian background process. Such a modulation is space homogeneous in the set of inner states of the two-dimensional lattice but may be different in the set of states at its boundaries. To obtain the stationary distribution, we apply the power series appr…

Let $ξ$ n , n $\in$ N be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with values in Z. The associated random walk on Z is S(n) = $ξ$ 1 + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + $ξ$ n+1 and the corresponding "reflected walk" on N 0 is the Markov chain X(n), n $\in$ N, given by X(0) = x $\in$ N 0 and X(n + 1) = |X(n) + $ξ$ n+1 | for n $\ge$ 0. It is well know that the reflected walk (X(n)) n$\ge$0 is null-recurrent when the $ξ$ n are square integrable and centered. In this paper, we prove that the process (X(n)) n$\ge$0 , properly rescaled, converges in distribution towards the reflected Brownian motion on R + ,…
Consider a reflected diffusion on the positive half-line. We approximate it by solutions of stochastic differential equations using the penalty method: We emulate the "hard barrier" of reflection by a "soft barrier" of a large drift coefficient, which compells the diffusion to return to the positive half-line. The main tool of the proof is convergence of scale functions.
In this article, we close a gap in the literature by proving existence of invariant measures for reflected SPDEs with only one reflecting barrier. This is done by arguing that the sequence (u(t, .)) is tight in the space of probability measures on continuous functions and invoking the Krylov-Bogolyubov theorem. As we no longer have an a priori bound on our solution as in the two-barrier case, a key aspect of the proof is the derivation of a suitable Lp bound which is uniform in time.
We consider a branching random walk with an absorbing barrier, where the step of the associated one-dimensional random walk is in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law with $1<α<2$. We shall prove that there is a barrier $an^{\frac{1}{1+α}}$ and a critical value $a_α$ such that if $a<a_α$, then the process dies; if $a>a_α$, then the process survives. The results generalize previous results in literature for the case $α=2$.
Under a generalized Mokobodzki condition for reflected BSDEs with two continuous barriers which relates the growth of the generator $g$ and that of the barriers, we establish several existence and uniqueness results on $L^p\ (p>1)$ solutions of doubly reflected BSDEs with generators satisfying a one-sided Osgood condition together with a general growth in the state variable $y$, and a uniform continuity condition or a linear growth condition in the state variable $z$. This Mokobodzki condition is also proved to be necessary for existence of the $L^p$ solutions. And, we prove that the $L^p$ sol…
In this paper, we study the scaling limit of a class of random walks which behave like simple random walks outside of a bounded region around the origin and which are subject to a partial reflection near the origin. If the probability of crossing the barrier scales as $ 1/\sqrt{n} $ as we rescale space by $ \sqrt{n} $ and time by $ n $, we obtain a non trivial scaling limit which behaves like reflected Brownian motion until its local time at the origin reaches an independent exponential variable. It then follows reflected Brownian motion on the other side of the origin until its local time at …

An obvious way to simulate a Lévy process $X$ is to sample its increments over time $1/n$, thus constructing an approximating random walk $X^{(n)}$. This paper considers the error of such approximation after the two-sided reflection map is applied, with focus on the value of the resultant process $Y$ and regulators $L,U$ at the lower and upper barriers at some fixed time. Under the weak assumption that $X_\varepsilon/a_\varepsilon$ has a non-trivial weak limit for some scaling function $a_\varepsilon$ as $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$, it is proved in particular that $(Y_1-Y^{(n)}_n)/a_{1/n}$ conve…
