The natural analogue for a Levy process of Cramer's estimate for a reflected random walk is a statement about the exponential rate of decay of the tail of the characteristic measure of the height of an excursion above the minimum. We establish this estimate for any Levy process with finite negative mean which satisfies Cramer's condition, and give an explicit formula for the limiting constant. Just as in the random walk case, this leads to a Poisson limit theorem for the number of ``high excursions.''
We investigate the Levy insurance risk model with tax under Cramér's condition. A direct analogue of Cramér's estimate for the probability of ruin in this model is obtained, together with the asymptotic distribution, conditional on ruin occurring, of several variables of interest related to ruin including the surplus immediately prior to ruin (undershoot) and shortfall at ruin (overshoot). We also compute the present value of all tax paid conditional on ruin occurring. The proof involves first transferring results from the model with no tax to the reflected process, and from there to the model…
We consider the exponential functional $A_{\infty}=\int_0^{\infty} e^{ξ_s} ds$ associated to a Levy process $(ξ_t)_{t \geq 0}$. We find the asymptotic behavior of the tail of this random variable, under some assumptions on the process $ξ$, the main one being Cramer's condition, that asserts the existence of a real $χ>0$ such that ${\Bbb E}(e^{χξ_1})=1$. Then there exists $C>0$ satisfying, when $t \to +\infty$ : $$ {\Bbb P} (A_{\infty}> t) \sim C t^{-χ} \quad . $$ This result can be applied for example to the process $ξ_t = at - S_α(t)$ where $S_α$ stands for the stable subordinator of index $α…
The reflected process of a random walk or Lévy process arises in many areas of applied probability, and a question of particular interest is how the tail of the distribution of the heights of the excursions away from zero behaves asymptotically. The Lévy analogue of this is the tail behaviour of the characteristic measure of the height of an excursion. Apparently the only case where this is known is when Cramér's condition hold. Here we establish the asymptotic behaviour for a large class of Lévy processes which have exponential moments but do not satisfy Cramér's condition. Our proof also app…
We investigate the upper tail probabilities of the all-time maximum of a stable Lévy process with a power negative drift. The asymptotic behaviour is shown to be exponential in the spectrally negative case and polynomial otherwise, with explicit exponents and constants. Analogous results are obtained, at a less precise level, for the fractionally integrated stable Lévy process. We also study the lower tail probabilities of the integrated stable Lévy process in the presence of a power positive drift.
In this paper we analyze a Lévy process reflected at a general (possibly random) barrier. For this process we prove Central Limit Theorem for the first passage time. We also give the finite-time first passage probability asymptotics.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to reflected backward doubly stochastic differential equations driven by Teugels martingales associated with a Lévy process where the barrier process is not necessarily right continuous by approximating such equations by a new version of penalization method.
In this paper, a class of reflected generalized backward doubly stochastic differential equations (reflected GBDSDEs in short) driven by Teugels martingales associated with Lévy process and the integral with respect to an adapted continuous increasing process is investigated. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these equations. A probabilistic interpretation for solutions to a class of reflected stochastic partial differential integral equations (PDIEs in short) with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition is given.
We study a combination of the refracted and reflected Lévy processes. Given a spectrally negative Lévy process and two boundaries, it is reflected at the lower boundary while, whenever it is above the upper boundary, a linear drift at a constant rate is subtracted from the increments of the process. Using the scale functions, we compute the resolvent measure, the Laplace transform of the occupation times as well as other fluctuation identities that will be useful in applied probability including insurance, queues, and inventory management.
In this paper we study a spectrally negative Lévy process that is reflected at its draw-down level whenever a draw-down time from the running supremum arrives. Using an excursion-theoretical approach, for such a reflected process we find the Laplace transform of the upper exiting time and an expression of the associated potential measure. When the reflected process is identified as a risk process with capital injections, the expected total amount of discounted capital injections prior to the exiting time and the Laplace transform of the accumulated capital injections until the exiting time are…
In this paper, we deal with a class of reflected backward stochastic differential equations associated to the subdifferential operator of a lower semi-continuous convex function driven by Teugels martingales associated with Lévy process. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these equations by means of the penalization method. As its application, we give a probabilistic interpretation for the solutions of a class of partial differential-integral inclusions.
We consider the problem of viscosity solution of integro-partial differential equation(IPDE in short) with one obstacle via the solution of reflected backward stochastic differential equations(RBSDE in short) with jumps. We show existence and uniqueness of a continuous viscosity solution of equation with non local terms, in case the generator is not monotonous and Levy's measure is infinite.
This paper considers a Lévy-driven queue (i.e., a Lévy process reflected at 0), and focuses on the distribution of $M(t)$, that is, the minimal value attained in an interval of length $t$ (where it is assumed that the queue is in stationarity at the beginning of the interval). The first contribution is an explicit characterization of this distribution, in terms of Laplace transforms, for spectrally one-sided Lévy processes (i.e., either only positive jumps or only negative jumps). The second contribution concerns the asymptotics of $\prob{M(T_u)> u}$ (for different classes of functions $T_u$ a…
It was recently proven that the correlation function of the stationary version of a reflected Lévy process is nonnegative, nonincreasing and convex. In another branch of the literature it was established that the mean value of the reflected process starting from zero is nonnegative, nondecreasing and concave. In the present paper it is shown, by putting them in a common framework, that these results extend to substantially more general settings. Indeed, instead of reflected Lévy processes, we consider a class of more general stochastically monotone Markov processes. In this setup we show monot…
We provide a description of the excursion measure from a point for a spectrally negative Lévy process. The description is based in two main ingredients. The first is building a spectrally negative Lévy process conditioned to avoid zero and the study of its entrance law at zero. The latter is connected with both the excursion measure from zero of the process reflected in its infimum and reflected in its supremum. This lead us to establish a connection with the excursion measure from the state zero with the excursion measure from zero for the process reflected at the infimum and reflected at the…

We consider a spectrally positive Lévy process $X$ that does not drift to $+\infty$, viewed as coding for the genealogical structure of a (sub)critical branching process, in the sense of a contour or exploration process \cite{GaJa98,Lam10}. We denote by $I$ the past infimum process defined for each $t\geq 0$ by $I_t:= \inf_{[0,t]} X$ and we let $γ$ be the unique time at which the excursion of the reflected process $X-I$ away from 0 attains its supremum. We prove that the pre-$γ$ and the post-$γ$ subpaths of this excursion are invariant under space-time reversal, which has several other consequ…
An obvious way to simulate a Lévy process $X$ is to sample its increments over time $1/n$, thus constructing an approximating random walk $X^{(n)}$. This paper considers the error of such approximation after the two-sided reflection map is applied, with focus on the value of the resultant process $Y$ and regulators $L,U$ at the lower and upper barriers at some fixed time. Under the weak assumption that $X_\varepsilon/a_\varepsilon$ has a non-trivial weak limit for some scaling function $a_\varepsilon$ as $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$, it is proved in particular that $(Y_1-Y^{(n)}_n)/a_{1/n}$ conve…
We derive factorization identities for a class of preemptive-resume queueing systems, with batch arrivals and catastrophes that, whenever they occur, eliminate multiple customers present in the system. These processes are quite general, as they can be used to approximate Levy processes, diffusion processes, and certain types of growth-collapse processes; thus, all of the processes mentioned above also satisfy similar factorization identities. In the Levy case, our identities simplify to both the well-known Wiener-Hopf factorization, and another interesting factorization of reflected Levy proce…
We consider the control of a finite dam when the input process is either spectrally positive Levy or spectrally positive Levy reflected at its infimum, using P(M,Lambda, tau) control policies. Our results extend and unify the results Bea et al (2003), Lam and Lou (1987), and Attia (1987). The techniques used by the above authors involve solving systems of differential or integral equations. Our methods of proof are based on the theory and methods of scale functions of Levy processes.
We consider a class of two-sided singular control problems. A controller either increases or decreases a given spectrally negative Levy process so as to minimize the total costs comprising of the running and control costs where the latter is proportional to the size of control. We provide a sufficient condition for the optimality of a double barrier strategy, and in particular show that it holds when the running cost function is convex. Using the fluctuation theory of doubly reflected Levy processes, we express concisely the optimal strategy as well as the value function using the scale functi…
We provide integral formulae for the Laplace transform of the entrance law of the reflected excursions for symmetric Lévy processes in terms of their characteristic exponent. For subordinate Brownian motions and stable processes we express the density of the entrance law in terms of the generalized eigenfunctions for the semigroup of the process killed when exiting the positive half-line. We use the formulae to study in-depth properties of the density of the entrance law such as asymptotic behavior of its derivatives in time variable.
Let $τ(x)$ be the first time the reflected process $Y$ of a Levy processes $X$ crosses x>0. The main aim of the paper is to investigate the asymptotic dependence of the path functionals: $Y(t) = X(t) - \inf_{0\leq s\leq t}X(s)$, $M(t,x)=\sup_{0\leq s\leq t}Y(s)-x$ and $Z(x)=Y(τ(x))-x$. We prove that under Cramer's condition on X(1), the functionals $Y(t)$, $M(t,y)$ and $Z(x+y)$ are asymptotically independent as $\min\{t,y,x\}\to\infty$. We also characterise the law of the limiting overshoot $Z(\infty)$ of the reflected process. If, as $\min\{t,x\}\to\infty$, the quantity $t\te{-γx}$ has a posi…
In the setting of the classical Cramer-Lundberg risk insurance model, Albrecher and Hipp (2007) introduced the idea of tax payments. More precisely, if $X = \{X_t : t\geq 0\}$ represents the Cramer-Lundberg process and, for all $t\geq 0$, $S_t = \sup_{s\leq t}X_s$, then Albrecher and Hipp (2007) study $X_t - γS_t$, $t\geq 0$, where $γ\in(0,1)$ is the rate at which tax is paid. This model has been generalised to the setting that $X$ is a spectrally negative Lévy process by Albrecher et al. \cite{albr_ren_zhou}. Finally Kyprianou and Zhou (2009) extend this model further by allowing the rate at …
We recall four open problems concerning constructing high-order matrix-exponential approximations for the infimum of a spectrally negative Levy process (with applications to first-passage/ruin probabilities, the waiting time distribution in the M/G/1 queue, pricing of barrier options, etc). On the way, we provide a new approximation, for the perturbed Cramer-Lundberg model, and recall a remarkable family of (not minimal order) approximations of Johnson and Taaffe, which fit an arbitrarily high number of moments, greatly generalizing the currently used approximations of Renyi, De Vylder and Whi…
The joint distribution of the maximum loss and the maximum gain is obtained for a spectrally negative Levy process until the passage time of a given level. Their marginal distributions up to an independent exponential time are also provided. The existing formulas for Brownian motion with drift are recovered using the particular scale functions. Keywords Maximum drawdown Maximum drawup Spectrally negative Reflected process Fluctuation theory
Let $τ(x)$ be the epoch of first entry into the interval $(x,\infty)$, $x>0$, of the reflected process $Y$ of a Lévy process $X$, and define the overshoot $Z(x) = Y(τ(x))-x$ and undershoot $z(x) = x - Y(τ(x)-)$ of $Y$ at the first-passage time over the level $x$. In this paper we establish, separately under the Cramér and positive drift assumptions, the existence of the weak limit of $(z(x), Z(x))$ as $x$ tends to infinity and provide explicit formulae for their joint CDFs in terms of the Lévy measure of $X$ and the renewal measure of the dual of $X$. We apply our results to analyse the behavi…
In this paper we consider a general Lévy process $X$ reflected at downward periodic barrier $A_t$ and constant upper barrier $K$ giving a process $V^K_t=X_t+L^A_t-L^K_t$. We find the expression for a loss rate defined by $l^K=\mathbb{E} L^K_1$ and identify its asymptotics as $K\to\infty$ when $X$ has light-tailed jumps and $\mathbb{E}X_1<0$.
We construct the law of Lévy processes conditioned to stay positive under general hypotheses. We obtain a Williams type path decomposition at the minimum of these processes. This result is then applied to prove the weak convergence of the law of Lévy processes conditioned to stay positive as their initial state tends to 0. We describe an absolute continuity relationship between the limit law and the measure of the excursions away from 0 of the underlying Lévy process reflected at its minimum. Then, when the Lévy process creeps upwards, we study the lower tail at 0 of the law of the height this…
The goal is to identify the class of distributions to which the distribution of the maximum of a Lévy process with no negative jumps and negative mean (equivalently, the stationary distribution of the reflected process) belongs. An explicit new distributional identity is obtained for the case where the Lévy process is an independent sum of a Brownian motion and a general subordinator (nondecreasing Lévy process) in terms of a geometrically distributed sum of independent random variables. This generalizes both the distributional form of the standard Pollaczeck-Khinchine formula for stationary w…
We determine the rate of decrease of the right tail distribution of the exponential functional of a Levy process with a convolution equivalent Levy measure. Our main result establishes that it decreases as the right tail of the image under the exponential function of the Levy measure of the underlying Levy process. The method of proof relies on fluctuation theory of Levy processes and an explicit path-wise representation of the exponential functional as the exponential functional of a bivariate subordinator. Our techniques allow us to establish rather general estimates of the measure of the ex…
Let $(Q_t)$ be a stationary workload process, and $r(t)$ the correlation coefficient of $Q_0$ and $Q_t$. In a series of previous papers (i) the transform of $r(\cdot)$ has been derived for the case that the driving process is spectrally-positive (sp) or spectrally-negative (sn) Levy, (ii) it has been shown that for sp-Levy and sn-Levy input $r(\cdot)$ is positive, decreasing, and convex, (iii) in case the driving Levy process is light-tailed (a condition that is automatically fulfilled in the sn case), the decay of the decay rate agrees with that of the tail of the busy period distribution. In…
We consider a Lévy process $Y(t)$ that is not permanently observed, but rather inspected at Poisson($ω$) moments only, over an exponentially distributed time $T_β$ with parameter $β$. The focus lies on the analysis of the distribution of the running maximum at such inspection moments up to $T_β$, denoted by $Y_{β,ω}$. Our main result is a decomposition: we derive a remarkable distributional equality that contains $Y_{β,ω}$ as well as the running maximum process $\bar Y(t)$ at the exponentially distributed times $T_β$ and $T_{β+ω}$. Concretely, $\overline{Y}(T_β)$ can be written the sum of the …
We study the distribution and various properties of exponential functionals of hypergeometric Levy processes. We derive an explicit formula for the Mellin transform of the exponential functional and give both convergent and asymptotic series expansions of its probability density function. As applications we present a new proof of some of the results on the density of the supremum of a stable process, which were recently obtained by Kuznetsov "On extrema of stable processes" (2010) and Hubalek and Kuznetsov "A convergent series representation for the density of the supremum of a stable process"…
In the last few years there has been renewed interest in the classical control problem of de Finetti for the case that underlying source of randomness is a spectrally negative Levy process. In particular a significant step forward is made in an article of Loeffen where it is shown that a natural and very general condition on the underlying Levy process which allows one to proceed with the analysis of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is that its Levy measure is absolutely continuous, having completely monotone density. In this paper we consider de Finetti's control problem but no…
We consider a random walk with a negative drift and with a jump distribution which under Cramér's change of measure belongs to the domain of attraction of a spectrally positive stable law. If conditioned to reach a high level and suitably scaled, this random walk converges in law to a nondecreasing Markov process which can be interpreted as a spectrally-positive Lévy %-Khinchin process conditioned not to overshoot level one.
The {\em drawdown} process $Y$ of a completely asymmetric Lévy process $X$ is equal to $X$ reflected at its running supremum $\bar{X}$: $Y = \bar{X} - X$. In this paper we explicitly express in terms of the scale function and the Lévy measure of $X$ the law of the sextuple of the first-passage time of $Y$ over the level $a>0$, the time $\bar{G}_{τ_a}$ of the last supremum of $X$ prior to $τ_a$, the infimum $\unl X_{τ_a}$ and supremum $\ovl X_{τ_a}$ of $X$ at $τ_a$ and the undershoot $a - Y_{τ_a-}$ and overshoot $Y_{τ_a}-a$ of $Y$ at $τ_a$. As application we obtain explicit expressions for the …
We study the convergence of the $M/G/1$ processor-sharing, queue length process in the heavy traffic regime, in the finite variance case. To do so, we combine results pertaining to Lévy processes, branching processes and queuing theory. These results yield the convergence of long excursions of the queue length processes, toward excursions obtained from those of some reflected Brownian motion with drift, after taking the image of their local time process by the Lamperti transformation. We also show, via excursion theoretic arguments, that this entails the convergence of the entire processes to …
We develop the theory of the $W$ and $Z$ scale functions for right-continuous (upwards skip-free) discrete-time discrete-space random walks, along the lines of the analogue theory for spectrally negative Lévy processes. Notably, we introduce for the first time in this context the one and two-parameter scale functions $Z$, which appear for example in the joint problem of deficit at ruin and time of ruin, and in problems concerning the walk reflected at an upper barrier. Comparisons are made between the various theories of scale functions as one makes time and/or space continuous. The theory is …
