It is proved that a noetherian commutative local ring A containing a field is regular if there is a complex M of free A-modules with the following properties: M_i=0 for i not in [0,dim A]; the homology of M has finite length; H_0(M) contains the residue field of A as a direct summand. This result is an essential component in the proofs of the McKay correspondence in dimension 3 and of the statement that threefold flops induce equivalences of derived categories.
In arXiv:1109.6438v1 [math.AG] we introduced and studied a notion of algebraic entropy. In this paper we will give an application of algebraic entropy in proving Kunz Regularity Criterion for all contracting self-maps of finite length of Noetherian local rings in arbitrary characteristic. Some conditions of Kunz Criterion have already been extended to the general case by Avramov, Iyengar and Miller in arXiv:math/0312412v2 [math.AC], using different methods.
In this paper we show that the sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of ideals form discrete sets in certain graded $F$-finite rings. We do so by giving a criterion based on linear bounds for the growth of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain ideals. We further show that these linear bounds exists for one-dimensional rings and for ideals of (most) two-dimensional domains. We conclude by applying our technique to prove that all sets of $F$-jumping coefficients of all ideals in the determinantal ring given as the quotient by $2\times 2$ minors in a $2\times 3$ matrix of indeterminates form d…
Koszul modules over Noetherian local rings $R$ were introduced by Herzog and Iyengar and they possess good homological properties, for instance their Poincare' series is rational. It is an interesting problem to characterize classes of Koszul modules. Following the idea traced by Avramov, Iyengar and Sega, we take advantage of the existence of special filtration on $R$ for proving that large classes of $R$-modules over Koszul rings are Koszul modules. By using this tool we reprove and extend some results obtained by Fitzgerald.
Projective monomial curves correspond to rings generated by monomials of the same degree in two variables. Such rings always have finite Macaulayfication. We show how to characterize the Buchsbaumness and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these rings by means of their finite Macaulayfication, and we use this method to study the Buchsbaumness and to estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of large classes of non-smooth monomial curves in terms of the given monomials.
We show that the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture holds for (homogeneous) seminormal simplicial affine semigroup rings. Moreover, we prove an upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in terms of the dimension, which is similar as in the normal case. Finally, we compute explicitly the regularity of full Veronese rings.
In this note, we characterize the Hilbert regularity of the Stanley-Reisner ring $K[\bigtriangleup]$ in terms of the $f$-vector and the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex $\bigtriangleup$. We also compute the Hilbert regularity of a Gorenstein algebra.
The main result of this paper shows that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the tangent cone of a local ring is effectively bounded by the dimension and any extended degree. From this it follows that there are only a finite number of Hilbert-Samuel functions of local rings with given dimension and extended degree.
This paper contributes to the study of homological aspects of trivial ring extensions (also called Nagata idealizations). Namely, we investigate the transfer of the notion of (Matlis') semi-regular ring (also known as IF-ring) along with related concepts, such as coherence, in trivial ring extensions issued from integral domains. All along the paper, we put the new results in use to enrich the literature with new families of examples subject to semi-regularity.
Let $B$ be a regular local ring and $G\subset\Aut(B)$ a finite group of local automorphisms. Assume that $G$ is cyclic of prime order $p$, where $p$ is equal to the residue characteristic of $B$. We give conditions under which the ring of invariants $A=B^G$ is again regular.
We present algorithms for the computation of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and of the fiber ring of equigenerated $\mm$-primary ideals in two variables. Applying these algorithms, we find a counter-example to a conjecture of Eisenbud and Ulrich which states that these regularities are equal.
We investigate the transfer of w-stability and Clifford w-regularity from a domain D to the polynomial ring D[X]. We show that these two properties pass from D to D[X] when D is either integrally closed or it is Mori and w-divisorial.
Valuation rings and perfectoid rings are examples of (usually non-noetherian) rings that behave in some sense like regular rings. We give and study an extension of the concept of regular local rings to non-noetherian rings so that it includes valuation and perfectoid rings and it is related to Grothendieck's definition of formal smoothness as in the noetherian case. For that, we have to take into account the topologies. We prove a descent theorem for regularity along flat homomorphisms (in fact for homomorphisms of finite flat dimension), extending some known results from the noetherian to the…
We give a criterion for the section ring of an ample line bundle to be Koszul in terms of multigraded regularity. We discuss an application to polytopal semigroup rings.
Let $K[G]$ denote the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph $G$ on $[d]$ and $\mat(G)$ the matching number of $G$. It is shown that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G)$ if $G$ is non-bipartite and $K[G]$ is normal, and that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G) - 1$ if $G$ is bipartite.
We give a quasihomogeneity criterion for Gorenstein curves. For complete intersections, it is related to the first step of Vasconcelos' normalization algorithm. In the process, we give a simplified proof of the Kunz-Ruppert criterion.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of Ext modules, over a polynomial ring over a field, are given in terms of the initial degrees, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities and number of generators of the two graded modules involved. These general bounds are refined in the case the second module is the ring. Other estimates, for instance on the size of graded pieces of these modules, are given. We also derive a bound on the homological degree in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. This answers positively a question raised by Vasconcelos.
Let M be a finitely generated ZZ-graded module over the standard graded polynomial ring R=K[X_1, ..., X_n] with K a field, and let H_M(t)=Q_M(t)/(1-t)^d be the Hilbert series of M. We introduce the Hilbert regularity of M as the lowest possible value of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for an R-module with Hilbert series H_M. Our main result is an arithmetical description of this invariant which connects the Hilbert regularity of M to the smallest k such that the power series Q_M(1-t)/(1-t)^k has no negative coefficients. Finally we give an algorithm for the computation of the Hilbert regula…
In this work, we prove that if a graded, commutative algebra $R$ over a field $k$ is not Koszul then, denoting by $\mathfrak{m}$ the maximal homogeneous ideal of $R$ and by $M$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, the nonzero modules of the form $\mathfrak{m} M$ have infinite Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We also prove that over complete intersections which are not Koszul, a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ has infinite regularity. Finally, we relate the vanishing of the graded deviations of $R$ to having a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ of finite regularity.
We define the concept of regularity for bigraded modules and bigraded polynomial ring. In this setting we prove analogs of some of the classical results on $m$-regularity for graded modules over polynomial algebras.
We investigate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the multiplicity of the toric ring associated with a three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. In particular, in the rectangular case, we provide direct formulas for these two important invariants. Then, we compare these invariants for an accompanying pair of Ferrers diagrams under some mild conditions and bound the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for more general cases.
Hochster and Huneke showed that the property of F-regularity deforms for Gorenstein rings, i.e., if (R,m) is a Gorenstein local ring such that R/tR is F-regular for some nonzerodivisor t in m, then R is F-regular. This result was later extended to the case of Q-Gorenstein rings by Smith (for rings of characteristic zero) and Aberbach, Katzman, and MacCrimmon (for rings of positive characteristic). We investigate the deformation of strong F-regularity using an anti-canonical cover of R, i.e., a symbolic Rees algebra S = R + It + I^(2)t^2 + ..., where I is an inverse for the canonical module in …
We define the notion of componentwise regularity and study some of its basic properties. We prove an analogue, when working with weight orders, of Buchberger's criterion to compute Gröbner bases; the proof of our criterion relies on a strengthening of a lifting lemma of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud. This criterion helps us to show a stronger version of Green's crystallization theorem in a quite general setting, according to the componentwise regularity of the initial object. Finally we show a necessary condition, given a submodule $M$ of a free one over the polynomial ring and a weight such that $in…
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m}, k=A/\mathfrak{m})$ be a noetherian local ring. Then it is equivalent $n = \dim A = \dim_k \mathfrak{m}/\mathfrak{m}^2$ and $\mathrm{Tor}^A_i(k,k) = 0$ for all $i \gg 0$. The article gives a proof with the change-of-ring spectral sequence in the derived category form.
This note has two goals. The first is to give a short and self contained introduction to the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for standard graded ring $R$ over a general base ring. The second is to present a simple and concise proof of a classical result due to Cutkosky, Herzog and Trung and, independently, to Kodiyalam asserting that the regularity of powers of an homogeneous ideal $I$ of $R$ is eventually a linear function in $v$. Finally we show how the flexibility of the definition of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity over general base rings can be used to give a simple characterization of …
In this paper, we study the minimal generating system of the canonical module of a Hibi ring. Using the results, we state a characterization of a Hibi ring to be level. We also give a characterization of a Hibi ring to be of type 2. Further, we show that the degrees of the elements of the minimal generating system of the canonical module of a Hibi ring form a set of consecutive integers.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, $G$ a reductive group over $k$, and $V$ a finite dimensional $G$-module. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $U_P$ its unipotent radical. We prove that if $S$=\textyen $Sym V$ has a good filtration, then the ring of invariants $S^{U_P}$ is strongly $F$-regular.
This dissertation focuses on the following topics: (1) asymptotic prime divisors over complete intersection rings, (2) asymptotic stability of complexities over complete intersection rings, (3) asymptotic linear bounds of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in multigraded modules, and (4) characterizations of regular local rings via syzygy modules of the residue field.
We discuss Matijevic-Roberts type theorem on strong $F$-regularity, $F$-purity, and Cohen-Macaulay $F$-injective (CMFI for short) property. Related to this problem, we also discuss the base change problem and the openness of loci of these properties. In particular, we define the notion of $F$-purity of homomorphisms using Radu-Andre homomorphisms, and prove basic properties of it. We also discuss a strong version of strong $F$-regularity (very strong $F$-regularity), and compare these two versions of strong $F$-regularity. As a result, strong $F$-regularity and very strong $F$-regularity agree…
Using the notion of cyclically pure injective modules, a characterization for rings which are locally valuation is established. As applications, new characterizations for Prufer domains and pure semi-simple rings are provided. Namely, we show that a domain R is Prufer if and only if two of the three classes of pure injective, cyclically pure injective and RD-injective modules are equal. Also, we prove that a commutative ring R is pure semi-simple if and only if every R-module is cyclically pure injective.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field. We prove an upper bound for the multiplicity of $R/I$ when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal of the form $I=J+(F)$, where $J$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ideal and $F\notin J$. The bound is given in terms of two invariants of $R/J$ and the degree of $F$. We show that ideals achieving this upper bound have high depth, and provide a purely numerical criterion for the Cohen-Macaulay property. Applications to quasi-Gorenstein rings and almost complete intersections are given.
We show that the F-signature of a local ring of characteristic p, defined by Huneke and Leuschke, is positive if and only if the ring is strongly F-regular.
We prove new results on the connections between reduction numbers and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of blowup algebras and blowup modules, the key basic tool being the operation of Ratliff-Rush closure. First, we answer in two particular cases a question of M. E. Rossi, D. T. Trung, and N. V. Trung about Rees algebras of ideals in two-dimensional Buchsbaum local rings, and we even ask whether one of such situations always holds. In another theorem we generalize a result of A. Mafi on ideals in two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, by extending it to arbitrary dimension (and allowing…
Given a finitely generated module $M$ over a commutative local ring (or a standard graded $k$-algebra) $(R,\m,k) $ we detect its complexity in terms of numerical invariants coming from suitable $\m$-stable filtrations $\mathbb{M}$ on $M$. We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M) $ and the linearity defect of $M,$ denoted $\ld_R(M),$ through a deep investigation based on the theory of standard bases. If $M$ is a graded $R$-module, then $\reg_R(gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M)) <\infty$ implies $\reg_R(M)<\infty$ and the converse holds provided $M$ is of homogenous type. An analogous…
In this article, we compute the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. We obtain a lower bound for the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals. We also study some algebraic properties of the Rees algebra and special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs via algebraic properties of their initial algebra and Sagbi basis theory. We obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs.
Let $(R,\m,k)$ be a local (Noetherian) ring of positive prime characteristic $p$ and dimension $d$. Let $G_\dt$ be a minimal resolution of the residue field $k$, and for each $i\ge 0$, let $\gothic t_i(R) = \lim_{e\to \8} {\length(H_i(F^e(G_\dt)))}/{p^{ed}}$. We show that if $\gothic t_i(R) = 0$ for some $i>0$, then $R$ is a regular local ring. Using the same method, we are also able to show that if $R$ is an excellent local domain and $\Tor_i^R(k,R^+) = 0$ for some $i>0$, then $R$ is regular (where $R^+$ is the absolute integral closure of $R$). Both of the two results were previously known o…
In this paper we show that there is a close relationship between the invariants characterizing the homogeneous vanishing of the local cohomology of the Rees algebra and the associated graded ring for the good filtrations case. We obtain relationships between the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the fiber cone, associated graded ring, Rees algebra and reduction number for the good filtrations case.
Among reduced Noetherian prime characteristic commutative rings, we prove that a regular ring is precisely one where finite intersection of ideals commutes with taking bracket powers. However, reducedness is essential for this equivalence. Connections are made with Ohm-Rush content theory, intersection-flatness of the Frobenius map, and various flatness criteria.
We give two kinds of bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the canonical module and the deficiency modules of a ring, respectively in terms of the homological degree and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the original ring.
We demonstrate that the ring of invariants for the natural action of a subgroup G of GL_n(F_q) on a polynomial ring R=K[X_1,...,X_n] need not be F-pure. In these examples G is the symplectic group over a finite field, and the invariant subrings are always complete intersections by the work of Carlisle and Kropholler. These examples are of special interest from the point of view of studying the Frobenius closures and tight closures of ideals as contractions from certain extension rings: they provide instances when the socle element modulo an ideal generated by a system of parameters is forced i…
A question of Conca, Rossi, and Valla asks whether every quadratic Gorenstein ring $R$ of regularity three is Koszul. In a previous paper, we use idealization to answer their question, proving that in nine or more variables there exist quadratic Gorenstein rings of regularity three which are not Koszul. In this paper, we study the analog of the Conca-Rossi-Valla question when the regularity of $R$ is four or more. Let $R$ be a quadratic Gorenstein ring having $\mathrm{codim}\, R = c$ and $\mathrm{reg}\, R = r \ge 4$. We prove that if $c = r+1$ then $R$ is always Koszul, and for every $c \geq r…
Let R be a standard graded ring over a commutative Noetherian ring with unity and I a graded ideal of R. Let M be a finitely generated graded R-module. We prove that there exist integers e and ρ_M(I) such that for all large n, reg(I^nM)= ρ_M(I)n+e.
We study the relationship between the Tor-regularity and the local-regularity over a positively graded algebra defined over a field which coincide if the algebra is a standard graded polynomial ring. In this case both are characterizations of the so-called Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. Moreover, we can characterize a standard graded polynomial ring as an algebra with extremal properties with respect to the Tor- and the local-regularity. For modules of finite projective dimension we get a nice formula relating the two regularity notions. Interesting examples are given to help to understand t…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symbolic Rees rings of ideals defining certain finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field are finitely generated using a ring theoretical criterion which is known as Huneke's criterion.
Let I be a divisorial ideal of a strongly F-regular ring R. Watanabe asked if the symbolic Rees algebra R_s(I) is Cohen-Macaulay whenever it is Noetherian. We develop the notion of multi-symbolic Rees algebras, and use this to show that R_s(I) is indeed Cohen-Macaulay whenever a certain auxiliary ring is finitely generated over R.
We show how for a three-dimensional complete local ring in positive characteristic, the existence of an F-invariant, differentiable derivation implies Hochster's small MCM conjecture. As an application we show that any three-dimensional pseudo-graded ring in positive characteristic satisfies Hochster's small MCM conjecture.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ be an $F$-finite Noetherian local ring which has a canonical ideal $I \subsetneq R$. We prove that if $R$ is $S_2$ and $H^{d-1}_{\mathfrak{m}}(R/I)$ is a simple $R\{F\}$-module, then $R$ is a strongly $F$-regular ring. In particular, under these assumptions, $R$ is a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain.
