The topological entropy of a continuous self-map of a compact metric space can be defined in several distinct ways; when the space is not assumed compact, these definitions can lead to distinct invariants. The original, purely topological invariant defined by Adler et. al. is infinite if the system has at least one orbit with empty limit set. The Bowen-Dinaburg formulation (based on separated sets) is equivalent to the invariant defined by Friedland (based on a compactification of the inverse limit), and dominates another invariant proposed by Bowen (maximizing dispersion rates for orbits emanating from compact subsets). Examples show that these two invariants are both heavily dependent on the uniform structure induced by the metric used to calculate them.
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
In this paper, we prove a criterion for the local ergodicity of non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps with singularities. Our result is an extension of a theorem of Liverani and Wojtkowski.
We prove that solutions $u$ of the equation $f=u-u\circ T$ are automatically Holder continuous when $f$ is Holder continuous, and $T$ is non uniformly expanding and Markov. This result applies in particular to Young towers and to intermittent maps.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
We show that a strengthened version of the Collet-Eckmann condition for multimodal maps is topologically invariant. In particular, if f is non-uniformly expanding and the critical points are generic with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant measure, then any map g topologically conjugate to f is also non-uniformly expanding.
Given an ergodic measure with positive entropy and only positive Lyapunov exponents, its dynamical quantifiers can be approximated by means of quantifiers of some family of uniformly expanding repellers. Here non-uniformly expanding maps are studied that are $C^{1+β}$ smooth outside a set of possibly critical or singular points.
We construct equilibrium states, including measures of maximal entropy, for a large (open) class of non-uniformly expanding maps on compact manifolds. Moreover, we study uniqueness of these equilibrium states, as well as some of their ergodic properties.
In this article we prove that for a $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism on a compact Riemannian manifold, if there is a hyperbolic ergodic measure whose support is not uniformly hyperbolic, then the topological entropy of the set of irregular points that are not uniformly hyperbolic is larger than or equal to the metric entropy of the hyperbolic ergodic measure. In the process of proof, we give an abstract general mechanism to study topological entropy of irregular points provided that the system has a sequence of nondecreasing invariant compact subsets such that every subsystem has shadowing property an…
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
We consider families of transformations in multidimensional Riemannian manifolds with non-uniformly expanding behavior. We give sufficient conditions for the continuous variation (in the $L^1$-norm) of the densities of absolutely continuous (with respect to the Lebesgue measure) invariant probability measures for those transformations.
We give both sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the stochastic stability of non-uniformly expanding maps either with or without critical sets. We also show that the number of probability measures describing the statistical asymptotic behaviour of random orbits is bounded by the number of SRB measures if the noise level is small enough. As an application of these results we prove the stochastic stability of certain classes of non-uniformly expanding maps introduced in \cite{V} and \cite{ABV}.
We consider random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly having a non-degenerate critical set. We prove that, if the Lebesgue measure of the set of points failing the non-uniform expansion or the slow recurrence to the critical set at a certain time, for almost all random orbits, decays in a (stretched) exponential fashion, then the decay of correlations along random orbits is stretched exponential, up to some waiting time. As applications, we obtain almost sure stretched exponential decay of random correlations for Viana maps, as for a class of non-uniformly expanding local …
We consider a robust class of random non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials with small variation. For each element of this class we develop the Thermodynamical Formalism and prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states among non-uniformly expanding measures. Moreover, we show that these equilibrium states and the random topological pressure vary continuously in this setting.
We prove that, in Young towers with sufficiently small tails, the speed in the central limit theorem is O(1/\sqrt{n}), and the local limit theorem holds. This implies the same results for many non uniformly expanding dynamical systems, namely those for which a tower with sufficiently fast returns can be constructed.
Let $G$ be a countable infinite discrete amenable group. It should be noted that a $G$-system $(X,G)$ naturally induces a $G$-system $(\mathcal{M}(X),G)$, where $\mathcal{M}(X)$ denotes the space of Borel probability measures on the compact metric space $X$ endowed with the weak*-topology. A factor map $π\colon (X,G)\to(Y,G)$ between two $G$-systems induces a factor map $\widetildeπ\colon(\mathcal{M}(X),G)\to(\mathcal{M}(Y),G)$. It turns out that $\widetildeπ$ is open if and only if $π$ is open. When $Y$ is fully supported, it is shown that $π$ has relative uniformly positive entropy if and onl…
This work constructs symbolic dynamics for non-uniformly hyperbolic surface maps with a set of discontinuities $D$. We allow the derivative of points nearby $D$ to be unbounded, of the order of a negative power of the distance to $D$. Under natural geometrical assumptions on the underlying space $M$, we code a set of non-uniformly hyperbolic orbits that do not converge exponentially fast to $D$. The results apply to non-uniformly hyperbolic planar billiards, e.g. Bunimovich stadia.
We give a fairly complete characterization of the exact components of a large class of uniformly expanding Markov maps of $\mathbb{R}$. Using this result, for a class of $\mathbb{Z}$-invariant maps and finite modifications thereof, we prove certain properties of infinite mixing recently introduced by the author.
We show that, for a robust ($C^2$-open) class of random non-uniformly expanding maps, there exists equilibrium states for a large class of potentials. In particular, these sytems have measures of maximal entropy. These results also give a partial answer to a question posed by Liu-Zhao. The proof of the main result uses an extension of techniques in recent works by Alves-Araújo, Alves-Bonatti-Viana and Oliveira.
We consider the local dimension spectrum of a weak Gibbs measure on a C^1 non-uniformly hyperbolic system of Manneville- Pomeau type. We present the spectrum in three ways: using invariant measures, uniformly hyperbolic ergodic measures and equilibrium states. We are also proving analyticity of the spectrum under additional assumptions. All three presentations are well known for smooth uniformly hyperbolic systems.
In this work we study the problem of positiveness of topological entropy for flows using pointwise dynamics. We show that the existence of a non-periodic nonwandering point of an expansive and non-singular flow with shadowing is a sufficient condition to to obtain positive topological entropy. Moreover, we can deal with flows with singularities, showing that the existence of a non-wandering, non-critical, strongly-shadowable, and uniform-expansive point implies the existence of a symbolic subshift. Finally, we discuss pointwise versions of some shadowing-type properties.
We prove existence of equilibrium states with special properties for a class of distance expanding local homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces and continuous potentials. Moreover, we formulate a C$^1$ generalization of Pesin's Entropy Formula: all ergodic weak-SRB-like measures satisfy Pesin's Entropy Formula for $C^1$ non-uniformly expanding maps. We show that for weak-expanding maps such that $\Leb$-a.e $x$ has positive frequency of hyperbolic times, then all the necessarily existing ergodic weak-SRB-like measures satisfy Pesin's Entropy Formula and are equilibrium states for the potential…
We study the existence, uniqueness and rate of decay of correlation of equilibrium measures associated to robust classes of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials. The approach used in this paper is the spectral analysis of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator. More precisely, we combine the expanding features of the eigenmeasures of the transfer operator with a Lasota-Yorke type inequality to prove the existence of an unique equilibrium measure with fast decay of correlations.
This is a lightning introduction to some modern techniques used in the study of the statistical properties of hyperbolic dynamical systems. The emphasis is not in presenting a comprehensive theory but rather in fleshing out the main ideas in the simplest and fastest possible manner so that the reader can quickly get the intuition necessary to easily read the more technical (and more complete) accounts of the theory.
We prove existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for a large class of non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms on compact manifolds and Holder continuous potentials with not very large oscillation. No Markov structure is assumed. If the transformation is topologically mixing there is a unique equilibrium state, it is exact and satisfies a non-uniform Gibbs property. Under mild additional assumptions we also prove that the equilibrium states vary continuously with the dynamics and the potentials (statistical stability) and are also stable under stochastic perturbations of the …
We consider random perturbations of discrete-time dynamical systems. We give sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of certain classes of maps, in a strong sense. This improves the main result in J. F. Alves, V. Araujo, Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, Asterisque 286 (2003), 25--62, where it was proved the convergence of the stationary measures of the random process to the SRB measure of the initial system in the weak* topology. Here, under slightly weaker assumptions on the random perturbations, we obtain a stronger version of stochastic stability: convergence…
Many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to uniformly quasiregular maps in higher dimensions. We obtain results of this type for certain classes of quasiregular maps which are not uniformly quasiregular.
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associat…
We prove existence of (at most denumerable many) absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for random one-dimensional dynamical systems with asymptotic expansion. If the rate of expansion (Lyapunov exponents) is bounded away from zero, we obtain finitely many ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures, describing the asymptotics of almost every point. We also prove a similar result for higher-dimensional random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. The results are consequences of the construction of such measures for skew-products with essentially arbitrary ba…
We obtain stochastic stability of C2 non-uniformly expanding one-dimensional endomorphisms, requiring only that the first hyperbolic time map be L^{p}-integrable for p>3. We show that, under this condition (which depends only on the unperturbed dynamics), we can construct a random perturbation that preserves the original hyperbolic times of the unperturbed map and, therefore, to obtain non-uniform expansion for random orbits. This ensures that the first hyperbolic time map is uniformly integrable for all small enough noise levels, which is known to imply stochastic stability. The method enable…
In this note, we obtain verifiable sufficient conditions for the extreme value distribution for a certain class of skew product extensions of non-uniformly hyperbolic base maps. We show that these conditions, formulated in terms of the decay of correlations on the product system and the measure of rapidly returning points on the base, lead to a distribution for the maximum of $Φ(p) = -\log(d(p, p_0))$ that is of the first type. In particular, we establish the Type I distribution for $S^1$ extensions of piecewise $C^2$ uniformly expanding maps of the interval, non-uniformly expanding maps of th…
We give conditions under which nonuniformly expanding maps exhibit lower bounds of polynomial type for the decay of correlations and for a large class of observables. We show that if the Lasota-Yorke type inequality for the transfer operator of a first return map are satisfied in a Banach space B, and the absolutely continuous invariant measure obtained is weak mixing, in terms of aperiodicity, then under some renewal condition, the maps have polynomial decay of correlations for observables in B. We also provide some general conditions that give aperiodicity for expanding maps in higher dimens…
In the 1960s and 1970s a large part of the theory of dynamical systems concerned the case of uniformly hyperbolic or Axiom A dynamical system and abstract ergodic theory of smooth dynamical systems. However since around 1980 an emphasize has been on concrete examples of one-dimensional dynamical systems with abundance of chaotic behavior (Collet &Eckmann and Jakobson). New proofs of Jakobson's one-dimensional results were given by Benedicks and Carleson \cite{BC85} and were considerably extended to apply to the case of Hénon maps by the same authors \cite{BC91}. Since then there has been a con…
We consider some classes of piecewise expanding maps in finite dimensional spaces having invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We derive an entropy formula for such measures and, using this entropy formula, in some parametrized families we present sufficient conditions for the continuity of that entropy with respect to the parameter. We apply our results to a classical one-dimensional family of tent maps and a family of two-dimensional maps which arises as the limit of return maps when a homoclinic tangency is unfolded by a family of t…
We construct SRB measures for endomorphisms satisfying conditions far weaker than the non-uniformly expansion. As a consequence, the definition of non-uniformly expanding map can be weakened. We also prove the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant measure for local diffeomorphisms, only assuming the existence of hyperbolic times for Lebesgue almost all point of the manifold.
Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, and connected Riemannian $n$-manifold, for $n\ge 2$, which is not a rational homology sphere. We show that, for a non-constant and non-injective uniformly quasiregular self-map $f\colon M\to M$, the topological entropy $h(f)$ is $\log \mathrm{deg}( f )$. This proves Shub's entropy conjecture in this case.
We study the jump of topological entropy for $C^r$ interval or circle maps. We prove in particular that the topological entropy is continuous at any $f \in C^r([0; 1])$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{\log^+ \|f'\|_\infty}{r}$. To this end we study the continuity of the entropy of the Buzzi-Hofbauer diagrams associated to $C^r$ interval maps.
We prove a Berry-Esseen theorem, a local central limit theorem and (local) large and (global) moderate deviations principles for i.i.d. (uniformly) random non-uniformly expanding or hyperbolic maps with exponential first return times. Using existing results the problem is reduced to certain random (Young) tower extensions, which is the main focus of this paper. On the random towers we will obtain our results using contraction properties of random complex equivariant cones with respect to the complex Hilbert projective metric.
In this note we construct measures of maximal entropy for a certain class of maps with critical points called Viana maps. The main ingredients of the proof are the non-uniform expansion features and the slow recurrence (to the critical set) of generic points with respect to the natural candidates for attaining the topological entropy.
We define a family of discontinuous maps on the circle, called Bowen-Series-like maps, for geometric presentations of surface groups. The family has $2N$ parameters, where $2N$ is the number of generators of the presentation. We prove that all maps in the family have the same topological entropy, which coincides with the volume entropy of the group presentation. This approach allows a simple algorithmic computation of the volume entropy from the presentation only, using the Milnor-Thurston theory for one dimensional maps.
We show that the topological entropy is monotonic for unimodal interval maps which are obtained from the restriction of quadratic rational maps with real coefficients. This is done by ruling out the existence of certain post-critical curves in the moduli space of aforementioned maps, and confirms a conjecture made in [Fil19] based on experimental evidence.
In this work, we show that if $f$ is a uniformly continuous map defined over a Polish metric space, then the set of $f$-invariant measures with zero metric entropy is a $G_δ$ set (in the weak topology). In particular, this set is generic if the set of $f$-periodic measures is dense in the set of $f$-invariant measures. This settles a conjecture posed by Sigmund (Sigmund, K. On dynamical systems with the specification property. Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 190 (1974), 285-299) which states that the metric entropy of an invariant measure of a topological dynamical system that satisfies the periodic s…
A recent result of Downarowicz and Serafin (DS) shows that there exist positive entropy subshifts satisfying the assertion of Sarnak's conjecture. More precisely, it is proved that if $y=(y_n)_{n\ge 1}$ is a bounded sequence with zero average along every infinite arithmetic progression (the Möbius function is an example of such a \sq\ $y$) then for every $N\ge 2$ there exists a subshift $Σ$ over $N$ symbols, with entropy arbitrarily close to $\log N$, uncorrelated to $y$. In the present note, we improve the result of (DS). First of all, we observe that the uncorrelation obtained in (DS) is \em…
We consider the general question of estimating decay of correlations for non-uniformly expanding maps, for classes of observables which are much larger than the usual class of Holder continuous functions. Our results give new estimates for many non-uniformly expanding systems, including Manneville-Pomeau maps, many one-dimensional systems with critical points, and Viana maps. In many situations, we also obtain a Central Limit Theorem for a much larger class of observables than usual. Our main tool is an extension of the coupling method introduced by L.-S. Young for estimating rates of mixing o…
In this paper, we define the core entropy for postcritically-finite Newton maps and study its continuity within this family. We show that the entropy function is not continuous in this family, which is different from the polynomial case studied by Thurston, Gao, Dudko- Schleicher, Tiozzo [Th+, GT, DS, Ti2], and describe completely the continuity of the entropy function at generic parameters.
We prove that the flow generated by any interval map with zero topological entropy is minimally mean-attractable (MMA) and minimally mean-L-stable (MMLS). One of the consequences is that any oscillating sequence is linearly disjoint with all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy. In particular, the Möbius function is orthogonal to all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy (Sarnak's conjecture for interval maps). Another consequence is a non-trivial example of a flow having the discrete spectrum.
We introduce two parametrized families of piecewise affine maps on $[0,1]^2$ and $[0,1]^3$, as generalizations of the heterochaos baker maps which were introduced and investigated in [Y. Saiki, H. Takahasi, J. A. Yorke, Nonlinearity, 34 (2021), 5744--5761] as minimal models of the unstable dimension variability in multidimensional dynamical systems. We show that natural coding spaces of these maps coincide with the Dyck system that has come from the theory of languages. Based on this coincidence, we start to develop a complementary analysis on their invariant measures. As a first attempt, we s…
We consider some smooth maps on a bouquet of circles. For these maps we can compute the number of fixed points, the existence of periodic points and an exact formula for topological entropy. We use Lefschetz fixed point theory and actions of our maps on both the fundamental group and the first homology group.
We prove that the topological entropy of real unimodal maps depends as a Hoelder continuous function of the kneading parameter, and the local Hoelder exponent equals, up to a factor log 2, the value of the function at that point.
