The aim of this article is to give a concise algebraic treatment of the modular symbols formalism, generalised from modular curves to Hecke triangle surfaces. A sketch is included of how the modular symbols formalism gives rise to the standard algorithms for the computation of holomorphic modular forms. Precise and explicit connections are established to the cohomology of Hecke triangle surfaces and group cohomology. In all the note a general commutative ring is used as coefficient ring in view of applications to the computation of modular forms over rings different from the complex numbers.
This is a "stack-free" version of Chapter 2 of my thesis.
Dedekind symbols generalize the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). The symbols are determined uniquely by their reciprocity laws up to an additive constant. There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with polynomial (Laurent polynomial) reciprocity laws and the space of cusp (modular) forms. In this article we introduce Hecke operators on the space of weighted Dedekind symbols. We prove that these newly introduced operators are compatible with Hecke operators on the space of modular forms. As an application, we present formulae to give Fourier coefficients of Hecke ei…
We survey techniques to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology of arithmetic groups. These techniques can be seen as generalizations in different directions of the classical modular symbol algorithm, due to Manin and Ash-Rudolph. Most of the work is contained in papers of the author and the author with Mark McConnell. Some results are unpublished work of Mark McConnell and Robert MacPherson.
We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.
We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.
In this paper, a heuristic method to compute the Selberg zeta function for Hecke triangle groups, $G_q$ ($q>=3$) is described. The algorithm is based on the transfer operator method and an overview of the relevant background is given. We give numerical support for the claim that the method works and can be used to compute the Selberg Zeta function for $G_q$ to any desired precision. We also present some numerical results obtained by implementing the algorithm.
In this paper we extend the transfer operator approach to Selberg's zeta function for cofinite Fuchsian groups to the Hecke triangle groups G_q, q=3,4,..., which are non-arithmetic for q \not= 3,4,6. For this we make use of a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the corresponding Hecke surfaces which has been constructed in arXiv:0801.3951 and which is closely related to the natural extension of the generating map for the so called Hurwitz-Nakada continued fractions. We derive simple functional equations for the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator which for eigenvalues rho =1 are expected…
We compute higher moments of the Siegel--Veech transform over quotients of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ by the Hecke triangle groups. After fixing a normalization of the Haar measure on $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ we use geometric results and linear algebra to create explicit integration formulas which give information about densities of $k$-tuples of vectors in discrete subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$ which arise as orbits of Hecke triangle groups. This generalizes work of W.~Schmidt on the variance of the Siegel transform over $SL(2,\mathbb{R})/SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$.
We provide an explicit construction of a cross section for the geodesic flow on infinite-area Hecke triangle surfaces which allows us to conduct a transfer operator approach to the Selberg zeta function. Further we construct closely related cross sections for the billiard flow on the associated triangle surfaces and endow the arising discrete dynamical systems and transfer operator families with two weight functions which presumably encode Dirichlet respectively Neumann boundary conditions. The Fredholm determinants of these transfer operator families constitute dynamical zeta functions, which…
By a transfer operator approach to Maass cusp forms and the Selberg zeta function for cofinite Hecke triangle groups, M. Möller and the author found a factorization of the Selberg zeta function into a product of Fredholm determinants of transfer-operator-like families: $Z(s) = \det(1-\mc L_s^+)\det(1-\mc L_s^-)$. In this article we show that the operator families $\mc L_s^\pm$ arise as families of transfer operators for the triangle groups underlying the Hecke triangle groups, and that for $s\in\C$, $\Rea s=\tfrac12$, the operator $\mc L_s^+$ (resp. $\mc L_s^-$) has a 1-eigenfunction if and on…
Let S_{w+2} be the vector space of cusp forms of weight w+2 on the full modular group, and let S_{w+2}^* denote its dual space. Periods of cusp forms can be regarded as elements of S_{w+2}^*. The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem asserts that odd (or even) periods span S_{w+2}^*. However, periods are not linearly independent; in fact, they satisfy the Eichler-Shimura relations. This leads to a natural question: which periods would form a basis of S_{w+2}^*. First we give an answer to this question. Passing to the dual space S_{w+2}, we will determine a new basis for S_{w+2}. The even period …
For any odd integer N, we explicitly write down the Eisenstein cycles in the first homology group of modular curves of level N as linear combinations of Manin symbols. These cycles are, by definition, those over which every integral of holomorphic differential forms vanish. Our result can be seen as an explicit version of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem. Our method is to characterize such Eisenstein cycles as eigenvectors for the Hecke operators. We make crucial use of expressions of Hecke actions on modular symbols and on auxiliary level 2 structures.
In [Pollack-Stevens 2011], efficient algorithms are given to compute with overconvergent modular symbols. These algorithms then allow for the fast computation of $p$-adic $L$-functions and have further been applied to compute rational points on elliptic curves (e.g. [Darmon-Pollack 2006, Trifković 2006]). In this paper, we generalize these algorithms to the case of families of overconvergent modular symbols. As a consequence, we can compute $p$-adic families of Hecke-eigenvalues, two-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions, $L$-invariants, as well as the shape and structure of ordinary Hida-Hecke alge…
Let G be a torsion-free finite-index subgroup of SL(n,Z) or GL(n,Z), and let d be the cohomological dimension of G. We present an algorithm to compute the eigenvalues of the Hecke operators on the integral cohomology of degree d-1 for n = 2, 3, and 4. In addition, we describe a modification of the modular symbol algorithm of Ash-Rudolph for computing Hecke eigenvalues for the integral cohomology of degree d.
Gauss' classical reduction theory for indefinite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$ has originally been proven by means of purely algebraic and arithmetic considerations. It was later discovered that this reduction theory is closely related to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the modular surface, and hence can also be deduced geometrically. In this article, we use certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on Hecke triangle surfaces (also the non-arithmetic ones) to develop reduction theories for the indefinite binary quadratic forms associated to Hecke triangle …
Extending work of J. Raleigh, we compute polynomials $P_{n,F}(x)$ associated to certain families $F = \{f_m\}_{m = 3, 4, ...}$ of modular forms for Hecke groups $G(λ_m)$ with the property that $P_{n,F}(m)$ is the $n^{th}$ coefficient in the Fourier expansion of $f_m$. We express the $P_{n,F}$ in terms of the Fourier expansions of well-known Hauptmoduln, or in terms of certain divisor-sums. By studying the complex roots of the $P_n$, we relate them to Lehmer's question about Ramanujan's tau function. We review the theory of triangle functions and Hecke's theory of modular forms in order to esta…
The main results of this article concern the definition of a compactly supported cohomology class for the congruence group $Γ_0(p^n)$ with values in the second Milnor $K$-group (modulo 2-torsion) of the ring of $p$-integers of the cyclotomic extension $\Q(μ_{p^n})$. We endow this cohomology group with a natural action of the standard Hecke operators and discuss the existence of special Hecke eigenclasses in its parabolic cohomology. Moreover, for $n=1$, assuming the non-degeneracy of a certain pairing on $p$-units induced by the Steinberg symbol when $(p,k)$ is an irregular pair, i.e. $p|\frac…
In the literature, the standard approach to finding bases of spaces of modular forms is via modular symbols and the homology of modular curves. By using the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism, a work by Wang shows how one can use a cohomological viewpoint to determine bases of spaces of cusp forms on $Γ_0(N)$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $χ$. It is interesting to look at the complexity of this alternative approach, and we do this for an explicit implementation of the algorithm suggested by Wang.
In this article we report on extensive calculations concerning the Gorenstein defect for Hecke algebras of spaces of modular forms of prime weight p at maximal ideals of residue characteristic p such that the attached mod p Galois representation is unramified at p and the Frobenius at p acts by scalars. The results lead us to the ask the question whether the Gorenstein defect and the multplicity of the attached Galois representation are always equal to 2. We review the literature on the failure of the Gorenstein property and multiplicity one, discuss in some detail a very important practical i…
Using Hecke triangle surfaces of finite and infinite area as examples, we present techniques for thermodynamic formalism approaches to Selberg zeta functions with unitary finite-dimensional representations $(V,χ)$ for hyperbolic surfaces (orbifolds) $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ as well as transfer operator techniques to develop period-like functions for $(Γ,χ)$-automorphic cusp forms. This leads to several natural conjectures. We further show how to extend these results to the billiard flow on the underlying triangle surfaces, and study the convergence of transfer operators along sequences of Hecke…
We present an algorithm to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the top dimensional integral cohomology of certain torsion-free arithmetic subgroups of algebraic groups of Q-rank one. This generalizes the modular symbol algorithm to a setting including Bianchi groups and Hilbert modular groups. In addition, we generalize some results of Voronoi for real positive-definite quadratic forms to self-adjoint homogeneous cones of arbitrary Q-rank.
É.Ghys proved that the linking numbers of modular knots and the "missing" trefoil $K_{2,3}$ in $S^3$ coincide with the values of a highly ubiquitous function called the Rademacher symbol for ${\rm SL}_2\mathbb{Z}$. In this paper, we replace ${\rm SL}_2\mathbb{Z}=Γ_{2,3}$ by the triangle group $Γ_{p,q}$ for any coprime pair $(p,q)$ of integers with $2\leq p<q$. We invoke the theory of harmonic Maass forms for $Γ_{p,q}$ to introduce the notion of the Rademacher symbol $ψ_{p,q}$, and provide several characterizations. Among other things, we generalize Ghys's theorem for modular knots around any "…
We classify all primes appearing in the denominators of the Hauptmodul $J$ and modular forms for non-arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp. These primes have a congruence condition in terms of the order of the generators of the group. As a corollary we show that for the Hecke group of type $(2,m,\infty)$, the prime $p$ does not appear in the denominator of $J$ if and only if $p\equiv \pm 1\pmod m$.
Let $\goth E(\goth p)$ denote the Eisenstein ideal in the Hecke algebra $\Bbb T(\goth p)$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\goth p)$ parameterizing Drinfeld modules of rank two over $\Bbb F_q[T]$ of general characteristic with Hecke level $\goth p$-structure, where $\goth p\triangleleft\Bbb F_q[T]$ is a non-zero prime ideal. We prove that the characteristic $p$ of the field $\Bbb F_q$ does not divide the order of the quotient $\Bbb T(\goth p)/\goth E(\goth p)$ and the Eisenstein ideal $\goth E(\goth p)$ is locally principal.
We generalize Merel's work on universal Fourier expansions to Bianchi modular forms over Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, under the assumption of the nondegeneracy of a pairing between Bianchi modular forms and Bianchi modular symbols. Among the key inputs is a computation of the action of Hecke operators on Manin symbols, and building upon the Heilbronn-Merel matrices constructed by Mohamed.
A continued fractions based verification of the Hurwitz values for the Hecke triangle groups is given, completing a program of Lehner's. Ergodic theory shows that Diophantine approximation by mediant convergents of the Rosen continued fractions is sufficient to determine the values that Haas and Series found by hyperbolic geometry.
The goal of this paper is to construct the p-adic analytic family of overconvergent half-integral weight modular forms using Hecke-equivariant overconvergent Shintani lifting. The classical Shintani map is the Hecke-equivariant map from the space of cusp forms of integral weight to the space of cusp forms of half-integral weight. Glenn Stevens proved in [St1] that there is Lamda-adic lifting of this map to the Hida family of ordinary cusp forms of integral weight and consequently constructed Lamda-adic modular eigen form of half-integral weight. The natural thing to do is generalizing his resu…
Let $f_{\mathrm{new}}$ be a classical newform of weight $\geq 2$ and prime to $p$ level. We study the arithmetic of $f_{\mathrm{new}}$ and its unique $p$-stabilisation $f$ when $f_{\mathrm{new}}$ is $p$-irregular, that is, when its Hecke polynomial at $p$ admits a single repeated root. In particular, we study $p$-adic weight families through $f$ and its base-change to an imaginary quadratic field $F$ where $p$ splits, and prove that the respective eigencurves are both Gorenstein at $f$. We use this to construct a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function over a Coleman family through $f$, and a three…
The main goal of this paper is to construct non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols. However, we also construct commutative Hilbert modular symbols. Both the commutative and the non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols are generalizations of Manin's classical and non-commutative modular symbols. We prove that many cases of (non-)commutative Hilbert modular symbols are periods in the sense on Kontsevich-Zagier. Hecke operators act naturally on them. Manin defines the non-commutative modilar symbol in terms of iterated path integrals. In order to define non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols, we…
We provide a new and simple automorphic method using Eisenstein series to study the equidistribution of modular symbols modulo primes, which we apply to prove an average version of a conjecture of Mazur and Rubin. More precisely, we prove that modular symbols corresponding to a Hecke basis of weight 2 cusp forms are asymptotically jointly equidistributed mod $p$ while we allow restrictions on the location of the cusps. As an application, we obtain a residual equidistribution result for Dedekind sums. Furthermore, we calculate the variance of the distribution and show a surprising bias with con…
The theory of overconvergent modular symbols, developed by Rob Pollack and Glenn Stevens, gives a beautiful and effective construction of the $p$-adic $L$-function of a modular form. In this paper, we give an analogue of their results for Bianchi modular forms, that is, modular forms over imaginary quadratic fields. In particular, we prove control theorems that say that the canonical specialisation map from overconvergent to classical Bianchi modular symbols is an isomorphism on small slope eigenspaces of suitable Hecke operators. We also give an explicit link between the classical modular sym…
