Dedekind symbols generalize the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). The symbols are determined uniquely by their reciprocity laws up to an additive constant. There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with polynomial (Laurent polynomial) reciprocity laws and the space of cusp (modular) forms. In this article we introduce Hecke operators on the space of weighted Dedekind symbols. We prove that these newly introduced operators are compatible with Hecke operators on the space of modular forms. As an application, we present formulae to give Fourier coefficients of Hecke eigenforms. In particular we give explicit formulae for generalized Ramanujan's tau functions.
Systematic choice of the Hecke eigenforms of half-integral weight is an interesting problem in the theory of modular forms. In this paper, we find all Dedekind-eta products of half-integral weight which are Hecke eigenforms up to weight 15/2 with varying levels. Proof is based on the Shimura lift.

Dedekind symbols are generalizations of the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws and the space of modular forms. We will define a new elliptic analogue of the Apostol-Dedekind sums. Then we will show that the newly defined sums generate all odd Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws. Our construction is based on Machide's result on his elliptic Dedekind-Rademacher sums. As an application of our results, we discover Eisenstein series identities which generalize certain …
Let S_{w+2} be the vector space of cusp forms of weight w+2 on the full modular group, and let S_{w+2}^* denote its dual space. Periods of cusp forms can be regarded as elements of S_{w+2}^*. The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem asserts that odd (or even) periods span S_{w+2}^*. However, periods are not linearly independent; in fact, they satisfy the Eichler-Shimura relations. This leads to a natural question: which periods would form a basis of S_{w+2}^*. First we give an answer to this question. Passing to the dual space S_{w+2}, we will determine a new basis for S_{w+2}. The even period …
We define and study generalized Dedekind symbols with values in non--necessarily commutative groups, generalizing constructions of Sh. Fukuhara in [Fu1], [Fu2]. Basic examples of such symbols are obtained by replacing period integrals of modular forms (cf. [Ma1], [Ma2], [Kn1], [Kn2], [ChZ]) by iterated period integrals introduced and studied in [Ma3], [Ma4].
In this paper we study multiple Dedekind symbols and the associated multiple reciprocity functions. There is a bijection between the two sets of them after a normalization. By this bijection we define products of multiple reciprocity functions, and study the relationship to the shuffle property. We construct and calculate shuffled multiple Dedekind symbols and shuffled multiple reciprocity functions from modular forms by regularized iterated integrals. Also we give a decomposition for them.
In a previous paper, I have defined non--commutative generalized Dedekind symbols for classical $PSL(2,Z)$--cusp forms using iterated period polynomials. Here I generalize this construction to forms of real weights using their iterated period functions introduced and studied in a recent article by R.~Bruggeman and Y.~Choie.
Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
Let $k=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$, and let $c\in \mathfrak{O}_k$ be a square free algebraic integer such that $c\equiv 1~({\rm mod}~{\langle9\rangle})$. Let $ζ_{k(c^{1/3})}(s)$ be the Dedekind zeta function of the cubic field $k(c^{1/3})$ and $ζ_k(s)$ be the Dedekind zeta function of $k$. For fixed real $σ>1/2$, we obtain asymptotic distribution functions $F_σ$ for the values of the logarithm and the logarithmic derivative of the Artin $L$-functions \begin{equation*} L_c(σ)= \frac{ζ_{k(c^{1/3})}(σ)}{ζ_k(σ)}, \end{equation*} as $c$ varies. Moreover, we express the characteristic function of $F_σ$ e…
We survey techniques to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology of arithmetic groups. These techniques can be seen as generalizations in different directions of the classical modular symbol algorithm, due to Manin and Ash-Rudolph. Most of the work is contained in papers of the author and the author with Mark McConnell. Some results are unpublished work of Mark McConnell and Robert MacPherson.
The aim of this article is to give a concise algebraic treatment of the modular symbols formalism, generalised from modular curves to Hecke triangle surfaces. A sketch is included of how the modular symbols formalism gives rise to the standard algorithms for the computation of holomorphic modular forms. Precise and explicit connections are established to the cohomology of Hecke triangle surfaces and group cohomology. In all the note a general commutative ring is used as coefficient ring in view of applications to the computation of modular forms over rings different from the complex numbers. T…
For any odd integer N, we explicitly write down the Eisenstein cycles in the first homology group of modular curves of level N as linear combinations of Manin symbols. These cycles are, by definition, those over which every integral of holomorphic differential forms vanish. Our result can be seen as an explicit version of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem. Our method is to characterize such Eisenstein cycles as eigenvectors for the Hecke operators. We make crucial use of expressions of Hecke actions on modular symbols and on auxiliary level 2 structures.
We revisit some papers by Eichler and Shimura in order to give an algebraic formulation (based on Farey symbols) for the intersection product on the space of modular symbols, as described by Pollack and Stevens. We define the period homomorphism of an Eisenstein series (Eisenstein-Dedekind-Stevens symbol) and extend the definition of the intersection product to these objects. We construct a computationally convenient basis for the space of Eisenstein series for $Γ$ 0 (N) with rational periods. Given a Farey symbol for a subgroup $Γ$ of the modular group and a subgroup $Γ$ ' of finite index of …
We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.
The main results of this article concern the definition of a compactly supported cohomology class for the congruence group $Γ_0(p^n)$ with values in the second Milnor $K$-group (modulo 2-torsion) of the ring of $p$-integers of the cyclotomic extension $\Q(μ_{p^n})$. We endow this cohomology group with a natural action of the standard Hecke operators and discuss the existence of special Hecke eigenclasses in its parabolic cohomology. Moreover, for $n=1$, assuming the non-degeneracy of a certain pairing on $p$-units induced by the Steinberg symbol when $(p,k)$ is an irregular pair, i.e. $p|\frac…
In the literature, the standard approach to finding bases of spaces of modular forms is via modular symbols and the homology of modular curves. By using the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism, a work by Wang shows how one can use a cohomological viewpoint to determine bases of spaces of cusp forms on $Γ_0(N)$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $χ$. It is interesting to look at the complexity of this alternative approach, and we do this for an explicit implementation of the algorithm suggested by Wang.
We provide a new and simple automorphic method using Eisenstein series to study the equidistribution of modular symbols modulo primes, which we apply to prove an average version of a conjecture of Mazur and Rubin. More precisely, we prove that modular symbols corresponding to a Hecke basis of weight 2 cusp forms are asymptotically jointly equidistributed mod $p$ while we allow restrictions on the location of the cusps. As an application, we obtain a residual equidistribution result for Dedekind sums. Furthermore, we calculate the variance of the distribution and show a surprising bias with con…
Using Hecke triangle surfaces of finite and infinite area as examples, we present techniques for thermodynamic formalism approaches to Selberg zeta functions with unitary finite-dimensional representations $(V,χ)$ for hyperbolic surfaces (orbifolds) $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ as well as transfer operator techniques to develop period-like functions for $(Γ,χ)$-automorphic cusp forms. This leads to several natural conjectures. We further show how to extend these results to the billiard flow on the underlying triangle surfaces, and study the convergence of transfer operators along sequences of Hecke…
