We present an algorithm to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the top dimensional integral cohomology of certain torsion-free arithmetic subgroups of algebraic groups of Q-rank one. This generalizes the modular symbol algorithm to a setting including Bianchi groups and Hilbert modular groups. In addition, we generalize some results of Voronoi for real positive-definite quadratic forms to self-adjoint homogeneous cones of arbitrary Q-rank.
We introduce the concept of quadratic modular symbol and study how these symbols are related to quadratic p-adic L-functions. These objects were introduced in [3] in the case of modular curves. In this paper, we discuss a method to attach quadratic modular symbols and quadratic p-adic L-functions to more general Shimura curves.
We prove that the modular symbols appropriately normalized and ordered have an asymptotical normal distribution for all cocompact subgroups of SL_2(R). We introduce hyperbolic Eisenstein series in order to calculate the moments of the modular symbols.
We prove that the modular symbols appropriately normalized and ordered have a Gaussian distribution for all cofinite subgroups of SL_2(R). We use spectral deformations to study the poles and the residues of Eisenstein series twisted by power of modular symbols.
In this paper, we prove that the dimension of the $p$-Selmer group for an elliptic curve is controlled by certain analytic quantities associated with modular symbols, which is conjectured by Kurihara.
We compute the p-adic L-function (in the sense of Pollack-Stevens and Bellaiche) of the "evil twin" Eisenstein series. We use Solomon's Shintani cocycle to construct a p-adic Shintani modular symbol, and show how to specialize this modular symbol to overconvergent modular symbols with the same p-adic L-function as evil/critical-slope Eisenstein series. This gives a new proof of recent results of Bellaiche and Dasgupta.
The main goal of this paper is to construct non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols. However, we also construct commutative Hilbert modular symbols. Both the commutative and the non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols are generalizations of Manin's classical and non-commutative modular symbols. We prove that many cases of (non-)commutative Hilbert modular symbols are periods in the sense on Kontsevich-Zagier. Hecke operators act naturally on them. Manin defines the non-commutative modilar symbol in terms of iterated path integrals. In order to define non-commutative Hilbert modular symbols, we…
We present a detailed analysis of how to implement the computation of modular symbols for a given elliptic curve by using numerical approximations. This method turns out to be more efficient than current implementation as the conductor of the curve increases.
We define and study the space of mixed modular symbols for a given finite index subgroup $Γ$ of $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$. This is an extension of the usual space of modular symbols, which in some cases carries more information about Eisenstein series. We make use of mixed modular symbols to construct some $1$-motives related to the generalized Jacobian of modular curves. In the case $Γ= Γ_0(p)$ for some prime $p$, we relate our construction to the work of Ehud de Shalit on $p$-adic periods of $X_0(p)$.
For a cocompact group $\G$ of $\slr$ we fix a real non-zero harmonic 1-form $α$. We study the asymptotics of the hyperbolic lattice-counting problem for $\G$ under restrictions imposed by the modular symbols $\modsymγ{\a}$. We prove that the normalized values of the modular symbols, when ordered according to this counting, have a Gaussian distribution.
Mazur, Rubin, and Stein have recently formulated a series of conjectures about statistical properties of modular symbols in order to understand central values of twists of elliptic curve $L$-functions. Two of these conjectures relate to the asymptotic growth of the first and second moments of the modular symbols. We prove these on average by using analytic properties of Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols. Another of their conjectures predicts the Gaussian distribution of normalized modular symbols ordered according to the size of the denominator of the cusps. We prove this conjecture…
We interpolate cohomology classes attached to families of Hilbert modular forms. Using this we construct a two variable $p$-adic L-function which interpolates one variable $p$-adic L-functions.
We form real-analytic Eisenstein series twisted by Manin's noncommutative modular symbols. After developing their basic properties, these series are shown to have meromorphic continuations to the entire complex plane and satisfy functional equations in some cases. This theory neatly contains and generalizes earlier work in the literature on the properties of Eisenstein series twisted by classical modular symbols.
Bayer and Blanco-Chacón have recently defined quadratic modular symbols for the Shimura curves X(D,N) attached to Eichler orders of level N of an indefinite quaternion rational algebra of discriminant D. In this paper, we give a cohomological interpretation of these quadratic modular symbols. Explicit computations for the homology of some Shimura curves are also provided.
The aim of this article is to give a concise algebraic treatment of the modular symbols formalism, generalised from modular curves to Hecke triangle surfaces. A sketch is included of how the modular symbols formalism gives rise to the standard algorithms for the computation of holomorphic modular forms. Precise and explicit connections are established to the cohomology of Hecke triangle surfaces and group cohomology. In all the note a general commutative ring is used as coefficient ring in view of applications to the computation of modular forms over rings different from the complex numbers. T…
We give an overview of classical summation formulations, such as Poisson's and Voronoi's, and then turn to modern versions involving modular form coefficients. A new formula involving the coefficients of cusp forms on GL(3) is described, and its proof sketched, followed by applications to L-functions. The main method used is the boundary value distribution of automorphic forms.
Let K be a number field with euclidean ring of integers O. Let G be a finite-index torsion-free subgroup of Sp(2n, O). We exhibit a finite, geometrically defined spanning set of the top dimensional integral cohomology of G by generalizing the modular symbol algorithm of Ash and Rudolph.
For any odd integer N, we explicitly write down the Eisenstein cycles in the first homology group of modular curves of level N as linear combinations of Manin symbols. These cycles are, by definition, those over which every integral of holomorphic differential forms vanish. Our result can be seen as an explicit version of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem. Our method is to characterize such Eisenstein cycles as eigenvectors for the Hecke operators. We make crucial use of expressions of Hecke actions on modular symbols and on auxiliary level 2 structures.
We define Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols on the group SL(n), generalizing a construction of the first author. We show that, in the case of series attached to the minimal parabolic subgroup, our series converges for all points in a suitable cone. We conclude with examples for SL(2) and SL(3).
The Fourier coefficient of a second order Eisenstein series is described as a shifted convolution sum. This description is used to obtain the spectral decomposition of and estimates for the shifted convolution sum.
Let K be a number field with ring of integers O, and let G be a finite-index subgroup of SL(n,O). Using a classical construction from the geometry of numbers and the theory of modular symbols, we exhibit a finite spanning set for the highest nonvanishing rational cohomology group of G.
In a previous paper, I have defined non--commutative generalized Dedekind symbols for classical $PSL(2,Z)$--cusp forms using iterated period polynomials. Here I generalize this construction to forms of real weights using their iterated period functions introduced and studied in a recent article by R.~Bruggeman and Y.~Choie.
We survey techniques to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology of arithmetic groups. These techniques can be seen as generalizations in different directions of the classical modular symbol algorithm, due to Manin and Ash-Rudolph. Most of the work is contained in papers of the author and the author with Mark McConnell. Some results are unpublished work of Mark McConnell and Robert MacPherson.
We give a construction of a wide class of modular symbols attached to reductive groups. As an application we construct a p-adic distribution interpolating the special values of the twisted Rankin-Selberg L-function attached to cuspidal automorphic representations of GL(n) and GL(n-1) over number fields. If the representations are ordinary at p, our distribution is bounded and yields analyticity of the associated p-adic L-function.
We give explicit expressions for the Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series twisted by Dirichlet characters and modular symbols on $Γ_0(N)$ in the case where $N$ is prime and equal to the conductor of the Dirichlet character. We obtain these expressions by computing the spectral decomposition of automorphic functions closely related to these Eisenstein series. As an application, we then evaluate certain sums of modular symbols in a way which parallels past work of Goldfeld, O'Sullivan, Petridis, and Risager. In one case we find less cancellation in this sum than would be predicted by the co…
We explicitly write down the Eisenstein elements inside the space of modular symbols for Eisenstein series with integer coefficients for the congruence subgroups Γ_0 (pq) with p and q distinct odd primes, giving an answer to a question of Merel in these cases. We also compute the winding elements explicitly for these congruence subgroups. Our results are explicit versions of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem.
We enumerate the low dimensional cells in the Voronoi cell complexes attached to the modular groups $SL_N(Z)$ and $GL_N(Z)$ for $N=8,9,10,11$, using quotient sublattices techniques for $N=8,9$ and linear programming methods for higher dimensions. These enumerations allow us to compute some cohomology of these groups and prove that $K_8(Z) = 0$. We deduce from it new knowledge on the Kummer-Vandiver conjecture.
In [Pollack-Stevens 2011], efficient algorithms are given to compute with overconvergent modular symbols. These algorithms then allow for the fast computation of $p$-adic $L$-functions and have further been applied to compute rational points on elliptic curves (e.g. [Darmon-Pollack 2006, Trifković 2006]). In this paper, we generalize these algorithms to the case of families of overconvergent modular symbols. As a consequence, we can compute $p$-adic families of Hecke-eigenvalues, two-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions, $L$-invariants, as well as the shape and structure of ordinary Hida-Hecke alge…
We consider modifications of Manin symbols in first homology groups of modular curves with p-adic integer coefficients for an odd prime p. We show that these symbols generate homology in primitive eigenspaces for the action of diamond operators, with a certain condition on the eigenspace that can be removed on Eisenstein parts. We apply this to prove the integrality of maps taking compatible systems of Manin symbols to compatible systems of zeta elements. In the work of the first two authors on an Iwasawa-theoretic conjecture of the third author, these maps are constructed with certain bounded…
We explicitly write down the Eisenstein elements inside the space of modular symbols for Eisenstein series with integer coefficients for the congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ with $N$ odd square-free. We also compute the winding elements explicitly for these congruence subgroups. This gives an answer to a question of Merel in these cases. Our results are explicit versions of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem [Thm. 6]. These results are the generalization of the paper [1] results to odd square-free level.
We introduce a new technique for the study of the distribution of modular symbols, which we apply to congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups. We prove that if $K$ is a quadratic imaginary number field of class number one and $\mathcal{O}_K$ its ring of integers, then for certain congruence subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathcal{O}_K)$, the periods of a cusp form of weight two obey asymptotically a normal distribution. These results are specialisations from the more general setting of quotient surfaces of cofinite Kleinian groups, where our methods apply. We avoid the method of moments. Our new i…
Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
We define two-parameter generalizations of Andrews' $(k+1)$-marked odd Durfee symbols and $2k$th symmetrized odd rank moments, and study the automorphic properties of some of their generating functions. When $k=0$ we obtain families of modular forms and mock modular forms. When $k \geq 1$, we find quasimodular forms and quasimock modular forms.
The main goal of this paper is to study properties of the iterated integrals of modular forms in the upper halfplane, eventually multiplied by $z^{s-1}$, along geodesics connecting two cusps. This setting generalizes simultaneously the theory of modular symbols and that of multiple zeta values
For N=5, 6 and 7, using the classification of perfect quadratic forms, we compute the homology of the Voronoi cell complexes attached to the modular groups SL_N(\Z) and GL_N(\Z). From this we deduce the rational cohomology of those groups.
Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $χ$ is a Dirichlet character. We use statistical properties of modular symbols to estimate heuristically the probability that $L(E,χ,1) = 0$. Via the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this gives a heuristic estimate of the probability that the Mordell-Weil rank grows in abelian extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Using this heuristic we find a large class of infinite abelian extensions $F$ where we expect $E(F)$ to be finitely generated. Our work was inspired by earlier conjectures (based on random matrix heuristics) due to David, Fearnley, an…
We provide a new and simple automorphic method using Eisenstein series to study the equidistribution of modular symbols modulo primes, which we apply to prove an average version of a conjecture of Mazur and Rubin. More precisely, we prove that modular symbols corresponding to a Hecke basis of weight 2 cusp forms are asymptotically jointly equidistributed mod $p$ while we allow restrictions on the location of the cusps. As an application, we obtain a residual equidistribution result for Dedekind sums. Furthermore, we calculate the variance of the distribution and show a surprising bias with con…
For an elliptic curve over the rational number field and a prime number $p$, we study the structure of the classical Selmer group of $p$-power torsion points. In our previous paper \cite{Ku6}, assuming the main conjecture and the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, we proved that the structure of the Selmer group with respect to $p$-power torsion points is determined by some analytic elements $\tildeδ_{m}$ defined from modular symbols. In this paper, we do not assume the main conjecture nor the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, and study the structure of Selmer groups, …
We generalize Merel's work on universal Fourier expansions to Bianchi modular forms over Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, under the assumption of the nondegeneracy of a pairing between Bianchi modular forms and Bianchi modular symbols. Among the key inputs is a computation of the action of Hecke operators on Manin symbols, and building upon the Heilbronn-Merel matrices constructed by Mohamed.
This paper consists of variations upon the theme of limiting modular symbols. Topics covered are: an expression of limiting modular symbols as Birkhoff averages on level sets of the Lyapunov exponent of the shift of the continued fraction, a vanishing theorem depending on the spectral properties of a generalized Gauss-Kuzmin operator, the construction of certain non-trivial homology classes associated to non-closed geodesics on modular curves, certain Selberg zeta functions and C^* algebras related to shift invariant sets.
The theory of overconvergent modular symbols, developed by Rob Pollack and Glenn Stevens, gives a beautiful and effective construction of the $p$-adic $L$-function of a modular form. In this paper, we give an analogue of their results for Bianchi modular forms, that is, modular forms over imaginary quadratic fields. In particular, we prove control theorems that say that the canonical specialisation map from overconvergent to classical Bianchi modular symbols is an isomorphism on small slope eigenspaces of suitable Hecke operators. We also give an explicit link between the classical modular sym…
We define iteration over a two dimensional manifold as analog of iteration over a path defined by Chen. We give several applications. Some of them include constructions of non-abelian modular symbol for $SL(3,\Z)$ and for $SL_{2/K}$, where $K$ is a real quadratic field. We construct the latter as generating series of iterated integrals over a two-dimensional manifold of Hilbert modular forms. We give a motivic interpretation of this non-abelian modular symbol. Other applications give motivic interpretations of certain iterated completed Dedekind zeta functions.
We study the homology and the Borel-Moore homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ of a quotient (called arithmetic quotient) of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ of a nonarchimedean local field of positive characteristic by an arithmetic subgroup (a special case of the general definition in Harder's article (Invent.\ Math.\ 42, 135-175 (1977)). We define an analogue of modular symbols in this context and show that the image of the canonical map from homology to Borel-Moore homology is contained in the sub $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the modular symbols. By definition, th…
In this paper I introduce modular symbols for Maass wave cusp forms. They appear in the guise of finitely additive functions on the Boolean algebra generated by intervals with non--positive rational ends, with values in analytic functions (pseudo--measures in the sense of [MaMar2]). After explaining the basic issues and analogies in the extended Introduction, I construct modular symbols in the sec. 1 and the related Lévy--Mellin transforms in the sec. 2. The whole paper is an extended footnote to the Lewis--Zagier fundamental study [LZ2].
We revisit some papers by Eichler and Shimura in order to give an algebraic formulation (based on Farey symbols) for the intersection product on the space of modular symbols, as described by Pollack and Stevens. We define the period homomorphism of an Eisenstein series (Eisenstein-Dedekind-Stevens symbol) and extend the definition of the intersection product to these objects. We construct a computationally convenient basis for the space of Eisenstein series for $Γ$ 0 (N) with rational periods. Given a Farey symbol for a subgroup $Γ$ of the modular group and a subgroup $Γ$ ' of finite index of …
Let $F_n$ denote the Fermat curve given by $x^n+y^n=z^n$ and let $μ_n$ denote the Galois module of $n$th roots of unity. It is known that the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$ is a cyclic $\Z[μ_n\times μ_n]$ module. In this paper, we prove this result using modular symbols and the modular description of Fermat curves; moreover we find a basis for the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$. We also construct a family of Fermat curves using the Fermat surface and compute its monodromy.
In this paper we use fractal geometry to investigate boundary aspects of the first homology group for finite coverings of the modular surface. We obtain a complete description of algebraically invisible parts of this homology group. More precisely, we first show that for any modular subgroup the geodesic forward dynamic on the associated surface admits a canonical symbolic representation by a finitely irreducible shift space. We then use this representation to derive an `almost complete' multifractal description of the higher--dimensional level sets arising from Manin--Marcolli's limiting modu…
We clarify the relationship between works of Lee-Szczarba and Ash-Rudolph on the homology of the Steinberg module of a linear Tits building. This yields a simple proof of the Solomon-Tits theorem in this special case. We also give a (weak) relationship between this combinatorics and the one studied by van der Kallen, Suslin and Nesterenko to compute the homology of the general linear group with constant coefficients.
