Let (M,I, ω, Ω) be a nearly Kaehler 6-manifold, that is, an SU(3)-manifold with the (3,0)-form Ωand the Hermitian form ωwhich satisfies $dω=3λ\ReΩ, d\ImΩ=-2λω^2$, for a non-zero real constant λ. We develop an analogue of Kaehler relations on M, proving several useful identities for various intrinsic Laplacians on M. When M is compact, these identities bring powerful results about cohomology of M. We show that harmonic forms on M admit the Hodge decomposition, and prove that H^{p,q}(M)=0 unless p=q or (p=1, q=2) or (p=2, q=1).
We define the C^*-action on moduli spaces of reductive representations of fundamental groups of quasi-compact Kaehler manifolds by solving Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation. As applications in algebraic geometry we show a non-abelian Hodge (p,q)-type theorem for families of quasi-projective manifolds. We also prove that any discrete sub group of a Lie group of rank >1 that is not of Hodge type can't be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kaehler manifold.
This paper extends the nonabelian Hodge correspondence for Kaehler manifolds to a larger class of hermitian metrics on complex manifolds called balanced of Hodge-Riemann type. Essentially, it grows out of a few key observations so that the known results, especially the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem and Corlette's theorem, can be applied in our setting. Though not necessarily Kaehler, we show that the Sampson-Siu Theorem proving that harmonic maps are pluriharmonic remains valid for a slightly smaller class by using the known argument. Special important examples include those balanced metrics…
We consider strict and complete nearly Kaehler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. The holonomy representation of the canonical Hermitian connection is studied. We show that a strict and complete nearly Kaehler is locally a Riemannian product of homogenous nearly Kaehler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic Kaehler manifolds and 6-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds. As an application we obtain structure results for totally geodesic Riemannian foliations admitting a compatible Kaehler structure. Finally, we obtain a classification result for the homogenous case, reducing a …
There is a rich theory of so-called (strict) nearly Kaehler manifolds, almost-Hermitian manifolds generalising the famous almost complex structure on the 6-sphere induced by octonionic multiplication. Nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds play a distinguished role both in the general structure theory and also because of their connection with singular spaces with holonomy group the compact exceptional Lie group G2: the metric cone over a Riemannian 6-manifold M has holonomy contained in G2 if and only if M is a nearly Kaehler 6-manifold. A central problem in the field has been the absence of any complete …
We consider compactification of type IIA supergravity on nearly Kaehler manifolds. These represent a simple class of SU(3) structure manifolds which includes S^6 and CP^3. We exhibit for the first time an explicit reduction ansatz in this context, obtaining an N=2 gauged supergravity in 4d with a single vector and hypermultiplet. We verify that supersymmetric solutions of the 4d theory lift to 10d solutions. Along the way, we discuss questions related to encountering both electric and magnetic charges in the 4d theory.
We study and classify almost complex totally geodesic submanifolds of the nearly Kaehler flag manifold $F_{1,2}(\mathbb C^3)$, and of its semi-Riemannian counterpart. We also develop a structural approach to the nearly Kaehler flag manifold $F_{1,2}(\mathbb C^3)$, expressing for example the curvature tensor in terms of the nearly Kaehler structure $J$ and the three canonical orthogonal complex structures.
In the present paper, we study the hemi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds. We study the integrability of distributions involved in the definition of hemi-slant submanifolds. some results are worked out on totally umbilical hemi-slant submanifolds. we study the cohomology class for hemi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds.
In this paper, we investigate Lagrangian submanifolds in the nearly Kaehler $S^3 \times S^3$. We construct a new example which is a at Lagrangian torus. We give a complete classification of all the Lagrangian immersions of spaces of constant sectional curvature in the nearly Kaehler $S^3\times S^3$.
We discuss two kinds of almost contact metric structures on a one-parameter family of totally umbilical hyperspheres in the nearly Kaehler unit 6-sphere.
The cohomology of a compact Kaehler (resp. hyperKaehler) manifold admits the action of the Lie algebra so(2,1) (resp. so(4,1)). In this paper we show, following an idea of Witten, how this action follows from supersymmetry, in particular from the symmetries of certain supersymmetric sigma models. In addition, many of the fundamental identities in Hodge-Lefschetz theory are also naturally derived from supersymmetry.
We consider 6-dimensional strict nearly Kaehler manifolds acted on by a compact, cohomogeneity one automorphism group G. We classify the compact manifolds of this class up to G-diffeomorphisms. We also prove that the manifold has constant sectional curvature whenever the group G is simple.
We show the vanishing of the log-term in the Fefferman expansion of the Bergman kernel of the disk bundle over a compact simply-connected homogeneous Kaehler--Einstein manifold of classical type.
In the present paper, we investigate geometric properties of Clairaut anti-invariant submersions whose total space is a nearly Kaehler manifold. We obtain condition for Clairaut anti-invariant submersion to be a totally geodesic map and also study Clairaut anti-invariant submersions with totally umbilical fibers. In the last, we introduce illustrative example.
Let M be a six dimensional manifold, endowed with a cohomogeneity one action of G= SU_2 x SU_2, and M_reg its subset of regular points. We show that M_reg admits a smooth, 2-parameter family of G-invariant, non-isometric strict nearly Kaehler structures and that a 1-parameter subfamily of such structures smoothly extend over a singular orbit of type S^3. This determines a new class of examples of nearly Kaehler structures on TS^3
Non-existence of warped product semi-slant submanifolds of Kaehler manifolds was proved in [17], it is interesting to find their existence. In this paper, we prove the existence of warped product semi-slant submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds by a characterization. To this end we obtain an inequality for the squared norm of second fundamental form in terms of the warping function and the slant angle. The equality case is also discussed.
We consider complete nearly Kähler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. We prove some metric properties of strict nearly Kähler manifolds and give a sufficient condition for the reducibility of the canonical Hermitian connection. A holonomic condition for a nearly Kähler manifold to be a twistor space over a quaternionic Kähler manifold is given. This enables us to give classification results in 10-dimensions.
We study generic Riemannian submersions from nearly Kaehler manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We investigate conditions for the integrability of various distributions arising for generic Riemannian submersions and also obtain conditions for leaves to be totally geodesic foliations. We obtain conditions for a generic Riemannian submersion to be a totally geodesic map and also study generic Riemannian submersions with totally umbilical fibers. Finally, we derive conditions for generic Riemannian submersions to be harmonic map.
In some other context, the question was raised how many nearly Kähler structures exist on the sphere $§^6$ equipped with the standard Riemannian metric. In this short note, we prove that, up to isometry, there exists only one. This is a consequence of the description of the eigenspace to the eigenvalue $λ= 12$ of the Laplacian acting on 2-forms. A similar result concerning nearly parallel $\G_2$-structures on the round sphere $§^7$ holds, too. An alternative proof by Riemannian Killing spinors is also indicated.
We study almost Hermitian structures admitting a Hermitian connexion with totally skew-symmetric torsion or equivalently, those almost Hermitian structures with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor. We investigate up to what extent the Nijenhuis tensor fails to be parallel with respect to the characteristic connexion. This is naturally described by means of an extension of the notion of Killing form to almost Hermitian geometry. In this context, we also make an essentially self-contained survey of nearly-Kaehler geometry, but from the perspective of non-integrable holonomy systems.
We study bi-warped product submanifolds of nearly Kaehler manifolds which are the natural extension of warped products. We prove that every bi-warped product submanifold of the form $M=M_T\times_{f_1}\! M_\perp\times_{f_2}\! M_θ$ in a nearly Kaehler manifold satisfies the following sharp inequality: $$\|h\|^2\geq 2p\|\nabla (\ln f_1)\|^2+4q\left(1+{\small \frac{10}{9}}\cot^2θ\right)\|\nabla(\ln f_2)\|^2,$$ where $p=\dim M_\perp$, $q=\frac{1}{2}\dim M_θ$, and $f_1,\,f_2$ are smooth positive functions on $M_T$. We also investigate the equality case of this inequality. Further, some applications …
Let $(M,I)$ be an almost complex 6-manifold. The obstruction to integrability of almost complex structure (so-called Nijenhuis tensor) maps a 3-dimensional bundle to a 3-dimensional one. We say that Nijenhuis tensor is non-degenerate if it is an isomorphism. An almost complex manifold is called nearly Kaehler if it admits a Hermitian form $ω$ such that $\nabla(ω)$ is totally antisymmetric, $\nabla$ being the Levi-Civita connection. We show that a nearly Kaehler metric on a given almost complex 6-manifold with non-degenerate Nijenhuis tensor is unique (up to a constant). We interpret the nearly…
We discuss a peculiar interplay between the representation theory of the holonomy group of a Riemannian manifold, the Weitzenboeck formula for the Hodge-Laplace operator on forms and the Lichnerowicz formula for twisted Dirac operators. For quaternionic Kaehler manifolds this leads to simple proofs of eigenvalue estimates for Dirac and Laplace operators. Moreover it enables us to determine which representations can contribute to harmonic forms. As a corollary we prove the vanishing of certain odd Betti numbers on compact quaternionic Kaehler manifolds of negative scalar curvature. We simplify …
We consider Lie(G)-valued G-invariant connections on bundles over spaces G/H, RxG/H and R^2xG/H, where G/H is a compact nearly Kaehler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifolds RxG/H and R^2xG/H carry G_2- and Spin(7)-structures, respectively. By making a G-invariant ansatz, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on RxG/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of a particle moving in a plane with a quartic potential. For particular values of the torsion, we find explicit particle trajectories, which obey first-order gradient or hamiltonian flow equations. In two cases, these solutions correspond…
Let M be a hypercomplex Hermitian manifold, (M,I) the same manifold considered as a complex Hermitian with a complex structure I induced by the quaternions. The standard linear-algebraic construction produces a canonical nowhere degenerate (2,0)-form on (M,I). It is well known that M is hyperkaehler if and only if the form Ωis closed with respect to the de Rham differential. The M is called HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) if this form is closed with respect to the Dolbeault differential (this condition is weaker. Conjecturally, all compact hypercomplex manifolds admit an HKT-metrics. We exploi…
We obtain a classification theorem for non Kaehler nearly Kaehler manifolds with vanishing Bochner curvature tensor (introduced by Tricerri and Vanhecke).
Recently, we have shown that there do not exist the warped product semi-slant submanifolds of cosymplectic manifolds [10]. As nearly cosymplectic structure generalizes cosymplectic ones same as nearly Kaehler generalizes Kaehler structure in almost Hermitian setting. It is interesting that the warped product semi-slant submanifolds exist in nearly cosymplectic case while in case of cosymplectic do not exist. In the beginning, we prove some preparatory results and finally we obtain an inequality such as $\|h\|^2 \geq 4q\csc^2θ\{1+\frac{1}{9}\cos^2θ\}\|\nabla \ln f\|^2$ in terms of intrinsic and…
In this paper, by using the Bochner technique on almost Hermitian manifolds, we obtain a complex Hessian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds generalizing the Laplacian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds by Tossati, and reprove a diameter estimate for almost Hermitian manifolds by Gray. Moreover, we obtain a sharp eigenvalue estimate on quasi Kaehler manifolds and a sharp Hessian comparison on nearly Kaehler manifolds.
In this paper, we systematically compute the Bianchi identities for the canonical connection on an almost Hermitian manifold. Moreover, we also compute the curvature tensor of the Levi-Civita connection on almost Hermitian manifolds in terms of curvature and torsion of the canonical connection. As applications of the curvature identities, we obtain some results about the integrability of quasi Kaehler manifolds and some properties of nearly Kaehler manifolds.
For complete complex connections on almost complex manifolds we introduce a natural definition of compactification. This is based on almost c--projective geometry, which is the almost complex analogue of projective differential geometry. The boundary at infinity is a (possibly non-integrable) CR structure. The theory applies to almost Hermitean manifolds which admit a complex metric connection of minimal torsion, which means that they are quasi--Kaehler in the sense of Gray--Hervella; in particular it applies to Kaehler and nearly Kaehler manifolds. Via this canonical connection, we obtain a n…
In this expository article we discuss the relations between Sasakian geometry, reduced holonomy and supersymmetry. It is well known that the Riemannian manifolds other than the round spheres that admit real Killing spinors are precisely Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, 7-manifolds with a nearly parallel G2 structure, and nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds. We then discuss the relations between the latter two and Sasaki-Einstein geometry.
In this paper we prove a useful formula for the graded commutator of the Hodge codifferential with the left wedge multiplication by a fixed $p$-form acting on the de Rham algebra of a Riemannian manifold. Our formula generalizes a formula stated by Samuel I. Goldberg for the case of 1-forms. As first examples of application we obtain new identities on locally conformally Kaehler manifolds and quasi-Sasakian manifolds. Moreover, we prove that under suitable conditions a certain subalgebra of differential forms in a compact manifold is quasi-isomorphic as a CDGA to the full de Rham algebra.
We study conformal Killing forms on compact 6-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds. Our main result concerns forms of degree 3. Here we give a classification showing that all conformal Killing 3-forms are linear combinations of $d ω$ and its Hodge dual $* dω$ where $ω$ is the fundamental 2-form of the nearly Kähler structure. The proof is based on a fundamental integrability condition for conformal Killing forms. We have partial results in the case of conformal Killing 2-forms. In particular we show the non-existence of J-anti-invariant Killing 2-forms.
Let M be an almost complex manifold equipped with a Hermitian form such that its de Rham differential has Hodge type (3,0)+(0,3), for example a nearly Kahler manifold. We prove that any connected component of the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves on M is compact. This can be used to study pseudoholomorphic curves on a 6-dimensional sphere with the standard (G_2-invariant) almost complex structure.
We investigate instantons on manifolds with Killing spinors and their cones. Examples of manifolds with Killing spinors include nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds, nearly parallel G_2-manifolds in dimension 7, Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, and 3-Sasakian manifolds. We construct a connection on the tangent bundle over these manifolds which solves the instanton equation, and also show that the instanton equation implies the Yang-Mills equation, despite the presence of torsion. We then construct instantons on the cones over these manifolds, and lift them to solutions of heterotic supergravity. Amongst our s…
Conformal Killing forms are a natural generalization of conformal vector fields on Riemannian manifolds. They are defined as sections in the kernel of a conformally invariant first order differential operator. We show the existence of conformal Killing forms on nearly Kaehler and weak G_2-manifolds. Moreover, we give a complete description of special conformal Killing forms. A further result is a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the space of conformal Killing forms.
Let J be a unitary almost complex structure on a Riemannian manifold (M,g). If x is a unit tangent vector, let P be the associated complex line spanned by x and by Jx. We show that if (M,g) is Hermitian or if (M,g) is nearly Kaehler, then either the complex Jacobi operator (JC(P)y=R(y,x)x+R(y,Jx)Jx) or the complex curvature operator (RC(P)y=R(x,Jx)y) completely determine the full curvature operator; this generalizes a well known result in the real setting to the complex setting. We also show this result fails for general almost Hermitian manifold.
On a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ we extend the known analytic results on Yang-Mills connections to the class of connections called $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections, where $Ω$ is a smooth, not necessarily closed, $(n-4)$-form. Special cases include $Ω$-anti-self-dual connections and Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex manifolds. By a key observation, a weak compactness result is obtained for moduli space of smooth $Ω$-Yang-Mills connections with uniformly $L^2$ bounded curvature, and it can be improved in the case of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections over general complex man…
The subject of investigations are the almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian (Norden) metrics. A linear connection D is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D and its torsion is totally skew-symmetric. The class of the nearly Kaehler manifolds with respect to the first almost complex structure is of special interest. It is proved that D has a D-parallel torsion and is weak if it is not flat. Some curvature properties of these manifolds are studied.
We consider the Laplacian "co-flow" of $G_2$-structures: $\frac{d}{dt} ψ= - Δ_d ψ$ where $ψ$ is the dual 4-form of a $G_2$-structure $ϕ$ and $Δ_d$ is the Hodge Laplacian on forms. This flow preserves the condition of the $G_2$-structure being coclosed ($dψ=0$). We study this flow for two explicit examples of coclosed $G_2$-structures with symmetry. These are given by warped products of an interval or a circle with a compact 6-manifold $N$ which is taken to be either a nearly Kähler manifold or a Calabi-Yau manifold. In both cases, we derive the flow equations and also the equations for soliton…
We consider $G_{2}$-structures on $7$-manifolds that are warped products of an interval and a six-manifold, which is either a Calabi-Yau manifold, or a nearly Kähler manifold. We show that in these cases the $G_{2}$-structures are determined by their torsion components up to a phase factor. We then study the modified Laplacian coflow $\frac{dψ}{dt}=Δ_{ψ}ψ+2d\left( \left( C-Tr T\right) φ\right) $ of these $G_{2}$-structures, where $φ$ and $ψ$ are the fundamental $3$-form and $4 $-form which define the $G_{2}$-structure and $Δ_{ψ}$ is the Hodge Laplacian associated with the $G_{2}$-structure. Th…
