We classify all finite $p$-groups $G$ for which |$Aut_{c}(G)$| attains its maximum value, where $Aut_{c}(G)$ denotes the group of all class preserving automorphisms of $G$ .
We obtain certain results on a finite $p$-group whose central automorphisms are all class preserving. In particular, we prove that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group whose central automorphisms are all class preserving, then $d(G)$ is even, where $d(G)$ denotes the number of elements in any minimal generating set for $G$. As an application of these results, we obtain some results regarding finite $p$-groups whose automorphisms are all class preserving. In particular, we prove that if $G$ is a finite $p$-groups whose automorphisms are all class preserving, then order of $G$ is at least $p^8$ and the …
In this short survey article, we try to list maximum number of known results on class preserving automorphisms of finite $p$-groups. We conclude the survey with some interesting (at least for the author) open problems on this topic.
I withdraw my paper from arXiv because there is a technical error in the proof of Theorem 1.1. And because of this error, all the results in the paper are untrue. I am very sorry for this.
Let $\textrm{UT}_n (K)$ be a unitriangular group over a field $K$ and $Γ_{n,k} := \textrm{UT}_n (K)/ γ_k(\textrm{UT}_n (K))$, where $γ_k (\mathrm{UT}_n(K))$ denotes the $k$-th term of the lower central series of $\mathrm{UT}_n (K)$, $2 \le k \le n$. We prove that the group of all class preserving automorphisms of $Γ_{n,k}$ is equal to $\Inn(Γ_{n,k})$ if and only if $K$ is a prime field. Let $G_n^{(m)} := \mathrm{UT}_n (\mathbb{F}_{p^m}) / γ_3 (\mathrm{UT}_n(\mathbb{F}_{p^m}))$. We calculate the group of all class preserving automorphisms and class preserving outer automorphisms of $G_n^{(m)}$.
In 1911, Burnside asked whether or not there exist groups that have an outer automorphism which preserves conjugacy classes. Two years later he answered his own question by constructing a family of such groups. Using the small group library in MAGMA we determine all of the groups of order n < 512 that possess such an automorphism. Our investigations led to the discovery of four new infinite families of such groups, all of which are 2-groups of coclass 4.
Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group of order $p^5$, where $p$ is a prime. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ such that $G$ has a non-inner class-preserving automorphism. As a consequence, we give short and alternate proofs of results of section 5 of Yadav [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. (Math. Sci.) 118 (2008), 1-11] and Theorem 4.2 of Kalra and Gumber [Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 44 (2013), 711-725].
Let $G$ be a finite group and $M,N$ be two normal subgroups of $G$. Let $Aut_N^M(G)$ denote the group of all automorphisms of $G$ which fix $N$ element wise and act trivially on $G/M$. Let $n$ be a positive integer. In this article we have shown that if $G$ and $H$ are two $n$-isoclinic groups, then there exists an isomorphism from $Aut_{Z_n(G)}^{γ_{n+1}(G)}(G)$ to $Aut_{Z_n(H)}^{γ_{n+1}(H)}(H)$, which maps the group of $n^{th}$ class preserving automorphisms of $G$ to the group of $n^{th}$ class preserving automorphisms of $H$. Also, for a nilpotent group of class at most $(n+1)$, with some s…
Let $G$ be a finite non-abelian $p$-group, where $p$ is a prime. Let $\mathrm{Aut}_c(G)$ and $\mathrm{Aut}_z(G)$ respectively denote the group of all class preserving and central automorphisms of $G$. We give a necessary condition for $G$ such that $\mathrm{Aut}_c(G)=\mathrm{Aut}_z(G)$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions for $G$ with elementary abelian or cyclic center such that $\mathrm{Aut}_c(G)=\mathrm{Aut}_z(G).$ We also characterize all finite $p$-groups $G$ of order $\leq p^7$ such that $\mathrm{Aut}_c(G)=\mathrm{Aut}_z(G)$ and complete the classification of all finite $p$-group…
We complete characterization of bijections preserving commutators (PC-maps) in the group of unitriangular matrices $UT(n,F)$ over a field $F$, where $n$ is a natural number or infinity. PC-maps were recently described up to almost identity PC-maps by M.Chen, D.Wang, and H.Zhai (2011) for finite $n$ and by R.Slowik (2013) for $n=\infty$. An almost identity map is a map, preserving elementary transvections. We show that an almost identity PC-map is a multiplication by a central element. In particular, if $n=\infty$, then an almost identity map is identity. Together with the result of R.Slowik th…
We prove that even Coxeter groups, whose Coxeter diagrams contain no (4,4,2) triangles, are conjugacy separable. In particular, this applies to all right-angled Coxeter groups or word hyperbolic even Coxeter groups. For an arbitrary Coxeter group W, we also study the relationship between Coxeter generating sets that give rise to the same collection of parabolic subgroups. As an application we show that if an automorphism of W preserves the conjugacy class of every sufficiently short element then it is inner. We then derive consequences for the outer automorphism groups of Coxeter groups.
We give a sufficient condition on a finite $p$-group $G$ of nilpotency class 2 so that $\Aut_c(G) = \Inn(G)$, where $\Aut_c(G)$ and $\Inn(G)$ denote the group of all class preserving automorphisms and inner automorphisms of $G$ respectively. Next we prove that if $G$ and $H$ are two isoclinic finite groups (in the sense of P. Hall), then $\Aut_c(G) \cong \Aut_c(H)$. Finally we study class preserving automorphisms of groups of order $p^5$ and prove that $\Aut_c(G) = \Inn(G)$ for all the groups of order $p^5$ except two isoclinism families.
We investigate the automorphisms of some $κ$- existentially closed groups. In particular, we prove that $Aut(G)$ is the union of subgroups of level preserving automorphisms and $|Aut(G)|=2^κ$ whenever $κ$ is inaccessible and $G$ is the unique $κ$-existentially closed group of cardinality $κ$. Indeed, the latter result is a byproduct of an argument showing that, for any uncountable $κ$ and any group $G$ that is the limit of regular representation of length $κ$ with countable base, we have $|Aut(G)|=\beth_{κ+1}$, where $\beth$ is the beth function. Such groups are also $κ$-existentially closed i…
Let $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$ be the group of automorphisms on the first homology group with $\mathbb Z_2$ coefficient of a closed non-orientable surface $N_g$ preserving the mod $2$ intersection form. In this paper, we obtain a finite presentation for $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$. As applications we calculate the first homology group and the second homology group of $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$.
Let $G$ be a finite group minimally generated by $d(G)$ elements and $\Aut_c(G)$ denote the group of all (conjugacy) class-preserving automorphisms of $G$. Continuing our work [Class preserving automorphisms of finite $p$-groups, J. London Math. Soc. \textbf{75(3)} (2007), 755-772], we study finite $p$-groups $G$ such that $|\Aut_c(G)| = |γ_2(G)|^{d(G)}$, where $γ_2(G)$ denotes the commutator subgroup of $G$. If $G$ is such a $p$-group of class $2$, then we show that $d(G)$ is even, $2d(γ_2(G)) \le d(G)$ and $G/\Z(G)$ is homocyclic. When the nilpotency class of $G$ is larger than $2$, we obtai…
Motivated by the Bruhat and Cartan decompositions of general linear groups over local fields, double cosets of the group of label preserving automorphisms of a label-regular tree over the fixator of an end of the tree and over maximal compact open subgroups are enumerated. This enumeration is used to show that every continuous homomorphism from the automorphism group of a label-regular tree has closed range.
For a group $G$, let $U$ be the group of units of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$. The group $G$ is said to have the normalizer property if $\text{N}_U(G)=\text{Z}(U)G$. It is shown that Blackburn groups have the normalizer property. These are the groups which have non-normal finite subgroups, with the intersection of all of them being nontrivial. Groups $G$ for which class-preserving automorphisms are inner automorphisms, $\text{Out}_c(G)=1$, have the normalizer property. Recently, Herman and Li have shown that $\text{Out}_c(G)=1$ for a finite Blackburn group $G$. We show that $\text{ou…
We study the action of the group of polynomial automorphisms of C^n (n>2) which preserve the Markoff-Hurwitz polynomial H(x):= x_1^2 + x_2^2 + ... + x_n^2 - x_1 x_2 ... x_n. Our main results include the determination of the group, the description of a non-empty open subset of C^n on which the group acts properly discontinuously (domain of discontinuity), and identities for the orbit of points in the domain of discontinuity.
An endomorphism of a free group is called primitivity preserving if it takes every primitive element to another primitive. In this paper we prove that every primitivity preserving endomorphism of a free group of a finite rank n > 2 is an automorphism.
In this paper, we show that all Coleman automorphisms of a finite group with self-central minimal non-trivial characteristic subgroup are inner; therefore the normalizer property holds for these groups. Using our methods we show that the holomorph and wreath product of finite simple groups, among others, have no non-inner Coleman automorphisms. As a further application of our theorems, we provide partial answers to questions raised by M. Hertweck and W. Kimmerle. Furthermore, we characterize the Coleman automorphisms of extensions of a finite nilpotent group by a cyclic $p$-group. Lastly, we n…
We show that the group of type-preserving automorphisms of any irreducible semi-regular thick right-angled building is abstractly simple. When the building is locally finite, this gives a large family of compactly generated (abstractly) simple locally compact groups. Specializing to appropriate cases, we obtain examples of such simple groups that are locally indecomposable, but have locally normal subgroups decomposing non-trivially as direct products.
We prove that for a free product $G$ with free factor system $\mathcal{G}$, any automorphism $ϕ$ preserving $\mathcal{G}$, atoroidal (in a sense relative to $\mathcal{G}$) and none of whose power send two different conjugates of subgroups in $\mathcal{G}$ on conjugates of themselves by the same element, gives rise to a semidirect product $G\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb{Z}$ that is relatively hyperbolic with respect to suspensions of groups in $\mathcal{G}$. We recover a theorem of Gautero-Lustig and Ghosh that, if $G$ is a free group, $ϕ$ an automorphism of $G$, and $\mathcal{G}$ is its family of polynomia…
We show that every non-amenable free product of groups admits free ergodic probability measure preserving actions which have relative property (T) in the sense of S.-Popa \cite[Def. 4.1]{Pop06}. There are uncountably many such actions up to orbit equivalence and von Neumann equivalence, and they may be chosen to be conjugate to any prescribed action when restricted to the free factors. We exhibit also, for every non-amenable free product of groups, free ergodic probability measure preserving actions whose associated equivalence relation has trivial outer automorphisms group. This gives in part…

We explain how to construct a morphism from the group of birational automorphisms of CP^2 preserving the logarithmic Poisson bracket to the Thompson group T. Than we give a linear representation of the former group, provide some information about Thompson group T and give it's new presentation in terms of generators and relations, and speculate about the presentation of the group of birational symplectomorphisms.
We consider transformations preserving certain linear structure in Grassmannians and give some generalization of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry and the Chow Theorem [Ch]. It will be exploited to study linear $(k,n-k)$-involutions, $1<k<n-1$. The analogy of the well-known J. Dieudonné and C. E. Rickart result will be obtained.
Using the notion of a strongly regular hyperbolic automorphism of a locally finite Euclidean building, we prove that any (not necessarily discrete) closed, co-compact subgroup of the type-preserving automorphisms group of a locally finite general non-spherical building contains a compact-by-Z^d subgroup, where d is the dimension of a maximal flat.
Groups preserving a distributive product are encountered often in algebra. Examples include automorphism groups of associative and nonassociative rings, classical groups, and automorphism groups of p-groups. While the great variety of such products precludes any realistic hope of describing the general structure of the groups that preserve them, it is reasonable to expect that insight may be gained from an examination of the universal distributive products: tensor products. We give a detailed description of the groups preserving tensor products over semisimple and semiprimary rings, and presen…

We study the automorphism groups of free-by-cyclic groups and show these are finitely generated in the following cases: (i) when defining automorphism has linear growth and (ii) when the rank of the underlying free group has rank at most 3. The techniques we use are actions on trees, including the trees of cylinders due to Guirardel and Levitt, the relative hyperbolicity of free-by-cyclic groups (due to Gautero and Lustig, Ghosh, and Dahmani and Li) and the filtration of the automorphisms of a group preserving a tree, following Bass and Jiang, and Levitt. Our general strategy is to produce an …
We show that Out(G) is residually finite if G is a one-ended group that is hyperbolic relative to virtually polycyclic subgroups. More generally, if G is one-ended and hyperbolic relative to proper residually finite subgroups, the group of outer automorphisms preserving the peripheral structure is residually finite. We also show that Out(G) is virtually p-residually finite for every prime p if G is one-ended and toral relatively hyperbolic, or infinitely-ended and virtually p-residually finite.
Let $R_m$ be the (unique) universal homogeneous $m$-edge-coloured countable complete graph ($m\ge2$), and $G_m$ its group of colour-preserving automorphisms. The group $G_m$ was shown to be simple by John Truss. We examine the automorphism group of $G_m$, and show that it is the group of permutations of $R_m$ which induce permutations on the colours, and hence an extension of $G_m$ by the symmetric group of degree $m$. We show further that the extension splits if and only if $m$ is odd, and in the case where $m$ is even and not divisible by~$8$ we find the smallest supplement for $G_m$ in its …
In this paper, we first study biplanes $\mathcal{D}$ with parameters $(v,k,2)$, where the block size $k\in\{13,16\}$. These are the smallest parameter values for which a classification is not available. We show that if $k=13$, then either $\mathcal{D}$ is the Aschbacher biplane or its dual, or $Aut(\mathcal{D})$ is a subgroup of the cyclic group of order $3$. In the case where $k=16$, we prove that $|Aut(\mathcal{D})|$ divides $2^{7}\cdot 3^{2}\cdot 5\cdot 7\cdot 11\cdot 13$. We also provide an example of a biplane with parameters $(16,6,2)$ with a flag-transitive and point-primitive subgroup …
Let $Δ$ be a locally finite thick building of type $\tilde{A}_2$. We show that, if the type-preserving automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ)^+$ of $Δ$ is transitive on panels of each type, then either $Δ$ is Bruhat--Tits or $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ)$ is discrete. For $\tilde{A}_2$-buildings which are not panel-transitive but only vertex-transitive, we give additional conditions under which the same conclusion holds. We also find a local condition under which an $\tilde{A}_2$-building is ensured to be exotic (i.e.\ not Bruhat--Tits). It can be used to show that the number of exotic $\tilde{A}_2$-buildings…
Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group $\Out(G)$ of a one-ended word hyperbolic group $G$. In particular, we discuss to what extent $\Out(G)$ is virtually a direct product of mapping class groups and a free abelian group, and we determine for which groups $\Out(G)$ is infinite. We also show that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion elements in $\Out(G)$, for $G$ any torsion-free hyperbolic group. More generally, let $Γ$ be a finite graph of groups decomposition of an arbitrary group $G$ such that edge groups $G_e$ are rigid (i.e\. $\Out…
We give a shorter proof of a theorem of G. Elek stating that two hyperfinite measure-preserving actions of a countable group on standard probability spaces are approximately conjugate if and only if they have the same invariant random subgroup. We then use this theorem to study model theory of hyperfinite measure-preserving actions of countable groups on probability spaces. This work generalizes the model-theoretic study of automorphisms of probability spaces conducted by I. Ben Yaacov, A. Berenstein, C. W. Henson and A. Usvyatsov.
An automorphism of a spherical building is called domestic if it maps no chamber to an opposite chamber. In this paper we classify domestic automorphisms of spherical buildings of classical type.
