We investigate the automorphisms of some $κ$- existentially closed groups. In particular, we prove that $Aut(G)$ is the union of subgroups of level preserving automorphisms and $|Aut(G)|=2^κ$ whenever $κ$ is inaccessible and $G$ is the unique $κ$-existentially closed group of cardinality $κ$. Indeed, the latter result is a byproduct of an argument showing that, for any uncountable $κ$ and any group $G$ that is the limit of regular representation of length $κ$ with countable base, we have $|Aut(G)|=\beth_{κ+1}$, where $\beth$ is the beth function. Such groups are also $κ$-existentially closed if $κ$ is regular. Both results are obtained by an analysis and classification of level preserving automorphisms of such groups.
We prove that in every variety of $G$-groups, every $G$-existentially closed element satisfies nullstellensatz for finite consistent systems of equations. This will generalize {\bf Theorem G} of \cite{BMR1}. As a result we see that every pair of $G$-existentially closed elements in an arbitrary variety of $G$-groups generate the same quasi-variety and if both of them are $q_ω$-compact, they are geometrically equivalent.
We investigate this class of groups originally called ulf (universal locally finite groups) of cardinality $λ$. We prove that for every locally finite group $G$ there is a canonical existentially closed extention of the same cardinality, unique up to isomorphism and increasing with $G$. Also we get, e.g. existence of complete members (i.e. with no non-inner automorphisms) in many cardinals (provably in ZFC). We also get a parallel to stability theory in the sense of investigating definable types.
In the first part of the paper we survey several results from Popa's deformation/rigidity theory on the classification of tensor product decompositions of large natural classes of II$_1$ factors. Using a mélange of techniques from deformation/rigidity theory, model theory, and the recent works \cite{CIOS21,CDI22} we highlight an uncountable family of existentially closed II$_1$ factors $M$ which do not admit tensor product decompositions $M= P\bar \otimes Q$ into diffuse factors where $Q$ is full. In the last section we discuss several open problems regarding the structural theory of existenti…
Let $G$ be a finitely presented group, and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We prove that if $H$ is acylindrically hyperbolic and existentially closed in $G$, then $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, any finitely presented group which is existentially equivalent to the mapping class group of a surface of finite type, to $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ or $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ for $n\geq 2$ or to the Higman group, is acylindrically hyperbolic.
We prove that if $G$ is a group of automorphisms of a regular locally finite building which is closed in the compact-open topology and acts Weyl transitively on the building, then $G$ admits just one Hausdorff locally compact $σ$-compact topology compatible with the group operations.
We show that there is $n\in \mathbf N$, a finite system $Σ(\vec x,\vec y)$ of equations and inequations having a solution in some group, where $\vec x$ has length $n$, and $ε>0$ such that: for any group $G$ and any $\vec a\in G^n$, if the system $Σ(\vec a,\vec y)$ has a solution in $G$, then there is no $(\vec a,ε)$-Fø lner set in $G$. The proof uses ideas from model-theoretic forcing together with the observation that no amenable group can be existentially closed. Along the way, we also observe that no existentially closed group can be exact, have the Haagerup property, or have property (T). …
We consider closed, Weyl-transitive groups of automorphisms of thick buildings. For each element of such a group, we derive a combinatorial formula for its scale and establish the existence of a tidy subgroup for it that equals the stabilizer of a simplex. Simplices whose stabilizers are tidy for some element of the group are characterized in terms of the minimal set of the isometry induced by the element on the Davis-realisation of the building and in terms of the Weyl-distance between them and their image. We use our results to derive some topological properties of closed, Weyl-transitive gr…
Motivated by the Bruhat and Cartan decompositions of general linear groups over local fields, double cosets of the group of label preserving automorphisms of a label-regular tree over the fixator of an end of the tree and over maximal compact open subgroups are enumerated. This enumeration is used to show that every continuous homomorphism from the automorphism group of a label-regular tree has closed range.
We establish links between countable algebraically closed graphs and the endomorphisms of the countable universal graph $R$. As a consequence we show that, for any countable graph $Γ$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of the endomorphism monoid of $R$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Γ$. Further structural information about End $R$ is established including that Aut $Γ$ arises in uncountably many ways as a Schützenberger group. Similar results are proved for the countable universal directed graph and the countable universal bipartite graph.
We characterise the primitive 2-closed groups $G$ of rank at most four that are not the automorphism group of a graph or digraph and show that if the degree is at least 2402 then there are just two infinite families or $G\leqslant \mathrm{A}Γ\mathrm{L}_1(p^d)$, the 1-dimensional affine semilinear group. These are the first known examples of non-regular 2-closed groups that are not the automorphism group of a graph or digraph.
We study automorphisms $α$ of a totally disconnected, locally compact group $G$ which are expansive in the sense that, for some identity neighbourhood $U$, the sets $α^n(U)$ (for integers $n$) intersect in the trivial group. Notably, we prove that the automorphism induced by $α$ on $G/N$ for an $α$-stable closed normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ is always expansive. Further results involve the associated contraction groups $U_α$ consisting of all $x$ in $G$ such that $α^n(x) \to e$ as $n$ tends to infinity. If $α$ is expansive, then $W := U_αU_{α^{-1}}$ is an open identity neighbourhood in $G$. We gi…
This article is a survey on ind-varieties and ind-groups introduced by Shafarevich in 1965, with a special emphasis on automorphism groups of affine varieties and actions of ind-groups on ind-varieties. We give precise definitions and complete proofs, including several known results. The survey contains many examples and also some questions which came up during our work on the subject. Among the new results we show that for an affine variety X the automorphism group Aut(X) is always locally closed in the ind-semigroup End(X) of all endomorphisms, and we give an example of a strict closed subgr…
For a locally compact metrizable group $G$, we consider the action of ${\rm Aut}(G)$ on ${\rm Sub}_G$, the space of all closed subgroups of $G$ endowed with the Chabauty topology. We study the structure of groups $G$ admitting automorphisms $T$ which act expansively on ${\rm Sub}_G$. We show that such a group $G$ is necessarily totally disconnected, $T$ is expansive and that the contraction groups of $T$ and $T^{-1}$ are closed and their product is open in $G$; moreover, if $G$ is compact, then $G$ is finite. We also obtain the structure of the contraction group of such $T$. For the class of g…
