Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic 0 with each $°x_i = 1$. Given arbitrary integers $i$ and $j$ with $2 \leq i \leq n$ and $3 \leq j \leq n$, we will construct a monomial ideal $I \subset A$ such that (i) $β_k(I) < β_k(\Gin(I))$ for all $k < i$, (ii) $β_i(I) = β_i(\Gin(I))$, (iii) $β_\ell(\Gin(I)) < β_\ell(\Lex(I))$ for all $\ell < j$ and (iv) $β_j(\Gin(I)) = β_j(\Lex(I))$, where $\Gin(I)$ is the generic initial ideal of $I$ with respect to the reverse lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > >... > x_n$ and where $\Lex(I)$ is the lexsegment ideal with the same Hilbert function as $I$.
In this paper, we show for a monomial ideal $I$ of $K[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ that the integral closure $\ol{I}$ is a monomial ideal of Borel type (Borel-fixed, strongly stable, lexsegment, or universal lexsegment respectively), if $I$ has the same property. We also show that the $k^{th}$ symbolic power $I^{(k)}$ of $I$ preserves the properties of Borel type, Borel-fixed and strongly stable, and $I^{(k)}$ is lexsegment if $I$ is stably lexsegment. For a monomial ideal $I$ and a monomial prime ideal $P$, a new ideal $J(I, P)$ is studied, which also gives a clear description of the primary decompos…
We compute the minimal primary decomposition for completely squarefree lexsegment ideals. We show that critical squarefree monomial ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. As an application, we give a complete characterization of the completely squarefree lexsegment ideals which are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and we also derive formulas for some homological invariants of this class of ideals.
All powers of lexsegment ideals with linear resolution (equivalently, with linear quotients) have linear quotients with respect to suitable orders of the minimal monomial generators. For a large subclass of the lexsegment ideals the corresponding Rees algebra has a quadratic Gröbner basis, thus it is Koszul. We also find other classes of monomial ideals with linear quotients whose powers have linear quotients too.
In a polynomial ring $R$ with $n$ variables, for every homogeneous ideal $I$ and for every $p\leq n$ we consider the Koszul homology $H_i(p,R/I)$ with respect to a sequence of $p$ of generic linear forms and define the Koszul-Betti number $β_{ijp}(R/I)$ of $R/I$ to be the dimension of the degree $j$ part of $H_i(p,R/I)$. In characteristic 0, we show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal $I$ are bounded above by those of any gin of $I$ and also by those of the Lex-segment of $I$. We also investigate the set $Gins(I)$ of all the gin of $I$ and show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal…
In this thesis we are interested in describing some homological invariants of certain classes of monomial ideals. We will pay attention to the squarefree and non-squarefree lexsegment ideals.
The core of an ideal is defined as the intersection of all of its reductions. In this paper we provide an explicit description for the core of a monomial ideal $I$ satisfying certain residual conditions, showing that ${\rm core}(I)$ coincides with the largest monomial ideal contained in a general reduction of $I$. We prove that the class of lex-segment ideals satisfies these residual conditions and study the core of lex-segment ideals generated in one degree. For monomial ideals that do not necessarily satisfy the residual conditions and that are generated in one degree, we conjecture an expli…
We prove that a monomial ideal $I$ generated in a single degree, is polymatroidal if and only if it has linear quotients with respect to the lexicographical ordering of the minimal generators induced by every ordering of variables. We also conjecture that the polymatroidal ideals can be characterized with linear quotients property with respect to the reverse lexicographical ordering of the minimal generators induced by every ordering of variables. We prove our conjecture in many special cases.
Let $I$ be a homogeneous Artinian ideal in a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. We study an equivalent condition for the generic initial ideal $\gin(I)$ with respect to reverse lexicographic order to be almost reverse lexicographic. As a result, we show that Moreno-Socias conjecture implies Fröberg conjecture. And for the case $\Codim I \le 3$, we show that $R/I$ has the strong Lefschetz property if and only if $\gin(I)$ is almost reverse lexicographic. Finally for a monomial complete intersection Artinian ideal $I=(x_1^{d_1},...,x_n^{d_n})$, we prove that…
Let $S$ be a polynomial algebra over a field. We study classes of monomial ideals (as for example lexsegment ideals) of $S$ having minimal depth. In particular, Stanley's conjecture holds for these ideals. Also we show that if Stanley's conjecture holds for a square free monomial ideal then it holds for all its trivial modifications.
We study the generic initial ideals (gin) of certain ideals that arise in modular invariant theory. For all cases an explicit generating set is known we calculate the generic initial ideal of the Hilbert ideal of a cyclic group of prime order for all monomial orders. We also clarify the Klein four group and note that its Hilbert ideals are Borel fixed with certain orderings of the variables. In all situations we consider, there is a monomial order such that the gin of the Hilbert ideal is equal to its initial ideal. Along the way we show that gin respects a permutation of the variables in the …
Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a lexsegment ideal, generated by monomials of degree $d$. The main aim of this paper is to characterize when the Hilbert depth of $I$ will be 1, in the standard graded case. In addition to this, we will give an estimate of depth of squarefree monomial ideals, generalizing a result of Popescu. We will also show that Stanley conjecture holds for squarefree stable ideals, in the multigraded case.
Let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables with coefficients over a field $K$. A $t$-spread lexsegment ideal $I$ of $S$ is a monomial ideal generated by a $t$-spread lexsegment set. We determine all $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with linear resolution by means of Betti splittings. As applications we provide formulas for the Betti numbers of such a class of ideals and furthermore we characterize all incompletely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals with linear quotients.
Let $R = K[x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4]$ be the polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero. For the ideal $(x_1^a, x_2^b, x_3^c, x_4^d) \subset R$, where at least one of $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ is equal to two, we prove that its generic initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order is the almost revlex ideal corresponding to the same Hilbert function.
In the first chapter we present new results related on monomial ideals of Borel type. Also, we introduce a new class of monomial ideals, called $\de$-fixed ideals, which generalize the class of $p$-Borel ideals and we extend several results to this new class. In the second chapter, we compute the generic initial ideal, with repect to the reverse lexicographic order, of an ideal which define a complete intersection of embedding dimension three with strong Lefschetz property and we show that it is an almost reverse lexicographic ideal. This enable us to give a proof for Moreno's conjecture in th…
Given a homogeneous ideal I of a polynomial ring A=K[X_1,...,X_n] and a monomial order, we construct a new monomial ideal of A associated with I. We call it the zero-generic initial ideal of I with respect to the order and denote it with gin_0(I), or with Gin_0(I) whenever the order is the reverse-lexicographic order. When the characteristic of K is zero, a zero-generic initial ideal is the usual generic initial ideal. We show that Gin_0(I) is endowed with many interesting properties, some of which are easily seen, e.g., it is a strongly stable monomial ideal in any characteristic, and has the…
A Gotzmann monomial ideal of the polynomial ring is a monomial ideal which is generated in one degree and which satisfies Gotzmann's persistence theorem. A subset $V$ is said to be a Gotzmann subset if the ideal generated by $V$ is a Gotzmann monomial ideal. In the present paper, we find all integers $a>0$ such that every Gotzmann subset $V$ with $|V|=a$ is lexsegment (up to the permutation of the variables). In addition, we classify all Gotzmann subsets of $K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$.
In 1990 Cerlienco and Mureddu gave a combinatorial iterative algorithm which, given an ordered set of points, returns the lexicographical Groebner escalier of the ideal of these points. There are many alternatives to this algorithm and in particular, the most efficient is the Lex Game, which is not iterative on the points, but its performances are definitely better. In this paper, we develop an iterative alternative to Lex Game algorithm, whose performances are very near to those of the original Lex Game, by means of the Bar Code, a diagram which allows to keep track of information on the poin…
Every artinian quotient of $K[x,y]$ has the strong Lefschetz property if $K$ is a field of characteristic zero or is an infinite field whose characteristic is greater than the regularity of the quotient. We improve this bound in the case of monomial ideals. Using this we classify when both bounds are sharp. Moreover, we prove that the artinian quotient of a monomial ideal in $K[x,y]$ always has the strong Lefschetz property, regardless of the characteristic of the field, exactly when the ideal is lexsegment. As a consequence we describe a family of non-monomial complete intersections that alwa…
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between reduction numbers and Borel-fixed ideals in all characteristics. By definition, Borel-fixed ideals are closed under certain specializations which is similar to the strong stability. We will estimate the number of monomials which can be specialized to a given monomial. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial version of the well-known Eakin-Sathaye's theorem which bounds the reduction number in terms of the Hilbert function. Furthermore, we show that the bound of Eakin-Sathaye's theorem is attained by the reduction number of a lex-se…
Let $S_d$ be the vector space of monomials of degree $d$ in the variables $x_1, ..., x_s$. For a subspace $V \sus S_d$ which is in general coordinates, consider the subspace $\gin V \sus S_d$ generated by initial monomials of polynomials in $V$ for the revlex order. We address the question of what properties of $V$ may be deduced from $\gin V$. % This is an approach for understanding what algebraic or geometric properties of a homogeneous ideal $I \sus k[x_1, ..., x_s]$ that may be deduced from its generic initial ideal $\gin I$.
We will study monomial ideals $I$ in the exterior algebra as well as in the polynomial ring whose generic initial ideal is constant for all term orders up to permutations of variables. First, in the exterior algebra, we determine all graphs and all flag complexes whose exterior face ideal satisfies the above condition. Second, in the polynomial ring, it will be shown that the generic initial ideal $\gin_σ(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of a graph $G$ is constant for all term orders $σ$ up to permutations of variables if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph.
Monomial ideals which are generic with respect to either their generators or irreducible components have minimal free resolutions derived from simplicial complexes. For a generic monomial ideal, the associated primes satisfy a saturated chain condition, and the Cohen-Macaulay property implies shellability for both the Scarf complex and the Stanley-Reisner complex. Reverse lexicographic initial ideals of generic lattice ideals are generic. Cohen-Macaulayness for cogeneric ideals is characterized combinatorially; in the cogeneric case the Cohen-Macaulay type is greater than or equal to the numbe…
A short new proof of the fact that all shifted complexes are fixed by reverse lexicographic shifting is given. A notion of lexicographic shifting, $Δ_{\lex}$ -- an operation that transforms a monomial ideal of $S=\field[x_i: i\in\N]$ that is finitely generated in each degree into a squarefree strongly stable ideal -- is defined and studied. It is proved that (in contrast to the reverse lexicographic case) a squarefree strongly stable ideal $I\subset S$ is fixed by lexicographic shifting if and only if $I$ is a universal squarefree lexsegment ideal (abbreviated USLI) of $S$. Moreover, in the ca…
Let $R^h$ denote the polynomial ring in variables $x_1,\,\ldots,\, x_h$ over a specified field $K$. We consider all of these rings simultaneously, and in each use lexicographic (lex) monomial order with $x_1 > \cdots > x_h$. Given a fixed homogeneous ideal $I$ in $R^h$, for each $d$ there is unique lex ideal generated in degree at most $d$ whose Hilbert function agrees with the Hilbert function of $I$ up to degree $d$. When we consider $IR^N$ for $N \geq h$, the set $\mathfrak{B}_d(I,N)$ of minimal generators for this lex ideal in degree at most $d$ may change, but $\mathfrak{B}_d(I,N)$ is con…
Let $G$ be a finite graph on the vertex set $[d] = \{1, ..., d \}$ with the edges $e_1, ..., e_n$ and $K[\tb] = K[t_1, ..., t_d]$ the polynomial ring in $d$ variables over a field $K$. The edge ring of $G$ is the semigroup ring $K[G]$ which is generated by those monomials $\tb^e = t_it_j$ such that $e = \{i, j\}$ is an edge of $G$. Let $K[\xb] = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $K$ and define the surjective homomorphism $π: K[\xb] \to K[G]$ by setting $π(x_i) = \tb^{e_i}$ for $i = 1, ..., n$. The toric ideal $I_G$ of $G$ is the kernel of $π$. It will be proved tha…
For a standard Artinian $k$-algebra $A=R/I$, we give equivalent conditions for $A$ to have the weak (or strong) Lefschetz property or the strong Stanley property in terms of the minimal system of generators of the generic initial ideal $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ of $I$ under the reverse lexicographic order. Using the equivalent condition for the weak Lefschetz property, we show that some graded Betti numbers of $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ are determined just by the the Hilbert function of $I$ if $A$ has the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, for the case that $A$ is a standard Artinian $k$-algebra of codimens…
Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all color…
Let $K$ be an infinite field and let $m_1,\ldots,m_n$ be a generalized arithmetic sequence of positive integers, i.e., there exist $h, d, m_1 \in\mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $m_i = h m_1 + (i-1)d$ for all $i \in \{2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider the projective monomial curve $\mathcal C\subset \mathbb{P}^{n}_{K}$ parametrically defined by $$x_1=s^{m_1}t^{m_n-m_1},\dots,x_{n-1}=s^{m_{n-1}}t^{m_n-m_{n-1}},x_n=s^{m_n},x_{n+1}=t^{m_n}.$$ In this work, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay and Koszul properties of the homogeneous coordinate ring $K[\mathcal C]$ of $\mathcal C$. Whenever $K[\mathcal C]$ is Cohen…
The deviations of a graded algebra are a sequence of integers that determine the Poincare series of its residue field and arise as the number of generators of certain DG algebras. In a sense, deviations measure how far a ring is from being a complete intersection. In this paper we study extremal deviations among those of algebras with a fixed Hilbert series. In this setting, we prove that, like the Betti numbers, deviations do not decrease when passing to an initial ideal and are maximized by the Lex-segment ideal. We also prove that deviations grow exponentially for Golod rings and for certai…
