Let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the standard graded polynomial ring, with $K$ a field, and let ${\bf t}=(t_1,\ldots,t_{d-1})\in{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ge 0}^{d-1}$, $d\ge 2$, be a $(d-1)$-tuple whose entries are non negative integers. To a ${\bf t}$-spread ideal $I$ in $S$, we associate a unique $f_{\bf t}$-vector and we prove that if $I$ is ${\bf t}$-spread strongly stable, then there exists a unique ${\bf t}$-spread lex ideal which shares the same $f_{\bf t}$-vector of $I$ via the combinatorics of the ${\bf t}$-spread shadows of special sets of monomials of $S$. Moreover, we characterize the possible $f_{\bf t}$-vectors of ${\bf t}$-vector spread strongly stable ideals generalizing the well-known theorems of Macaulay and Kruskal-Katona. Finally, we prove that among all ${\bf t}$-spread strongly stable ideals with the same $f_{\bf t}$-vector, the ${\bf t}$-spread lex ideals have the largest Betti numbers.
We study the minimal primary decomposition of completely $t$-spread lexsegment ideals via simplicial complexes. We determine some algebraic invariants of such a class of $t$-spread ideals. Hence, we classify all $t$-spread lexsegment ideals which are Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper, we show that almost Cohen-Macaulay algebras are solid and in this respect, we seek for some special situation when (a) an almost Cohen-Macaulay algebra will be phantom extension and (b) when it maps into a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay module.
In \cite{AB}, the dagger closure is extended over finitely generated modules over Noetherian local domain $(R,\fm)$ and it is proved to be a Dietz closure. In this short note we show that it also satisfies the `Algebra axiom' of \cite{R.G} and this leads to the following result of this paper: For a complete Noetherian local domain, if it is contained in an almost Cohen-Macaulay domain, then there exists a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay algebra over it.
This paper shows that Cohen-Macaulay algebras can be algebraically approximated in such a way that their Cohen-Macaulayness and minimal Betti numbers are preserved. This is achieved by showing that finitely generated modules over power series rings can be algebraically approximated in a manner that preserves their diagrams of initial exponents and their minimal Betti numbers. These results are also applied to obtain an approximation result for flat homomorphisms from rings of power series to Cohen-Macaulay algebras.
We study properties of a poset generating a Cohen-Macaulay algebra with straightening laws (ASL for short). We show that if a poset $P$ generates a Cohen-Macaulay ASL, then $P$ is pure and, if $P$ is moreover Buchsbaum, then $P$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Some results concerning a Rees algebra of an ASL defined by a straightening closed ideal are also established. And it is shown that if $P$ is a Cohen-Macaulay poset with unique minimal element and $Q$ is a poset ideal of $P$, then $P\uplus Q$ is also Cohen-Macaulay.
We delve into the properties possessed by algebras, which we have termed seeds, that map to big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. We will show that over a complete local domain of positive characteristic any two big Cohen-Macaulay algebras map to a common big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. We will also strengthen Hochster and Huneke's "weakly functorial" existence result for big Cohen-Macaulay algebras by showing that the seed property is stable under base change between complete local domains of positive characteristic. We also show that every seed over a positive characteristic local ring (R,m) maps to a bi…
We prove the weak functoriality of (big) Cohen-Macaulay algebras, which controls the whole skein of "homological conjectures" in commutative algebra [H1][HH2]. Namely, for any local homomorphism $ R\to R'$ of complete local domains, there exists a compatible homomorphism between some Cohen-Macaulay $R$-algebra and some Cohen-Macaulay $R'$-algebra. When $R$ contains a field, this is already known [[3.9]{HH2}]. When $R$ is of mixed characteristic, our strategy of proof is reminiscent of G. Dietz's refined treatment [D] of weak functoriality of Cohen-Macaulay algebras in characteristic $p$; in fa…
We provide the sufficient conditions for Rees algebras of modules to be Cohen-Macaulay, which has been proven in the case of Rees algebras of ideals by Johnson-Ulrich and Goto-Nakamura-Nishida. As it turns out the generalization from ideals to modules is not just a routine generalization, but requires a great deal of technical development. We use the technique of generic Bourbaki ideals introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to obtain the Cohen-Macaulayness of Rees Algebras of modules.
We study initial algebras of determinantal rings, defined by minors of generic matrices, with respect to their classical generic point. This approach leads to very short proofs for the structural properties of determinantal rings. Moreover, it allows us to classify their Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals.
In the case of finite groups, a separating algebra is a subalgebra of the ring of invariants which separates the orbits. Although separating algebras are often better behaved than the ring of invariants, we show that many of the criteria which imply that the ring of invariants is non Cohen-Macaulay actually imply that no graded separating algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. For example, we show that, over a field of positive characteristic p, given sufficiently many copies of a faithful modular representation, no graded separating algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. Furthermore, we show that, for a p-group, the…
The Grothendieck-Serre formula for the difference between the Hilbert function and Hilbert polynomial of a graded algebra is generalized for bigraded standard algebras. This is used to get a similar formula for the difference between the Bhattacharya function and Bhattacharya polynomial of two m-primary ideals I and J in a local ring (A,m) in terms of local cohomology modules of Rees algebras of I and J. The cohomology of a variation of the Kirby-Mehran complex for bigraded Rees algebras is studied which is used to characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property of bigraded Rees algebra of I and J fo…
This paper studies the question of when the Rees algebras associated to arbitrary filtration of ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. Although this problem has been already investigated by N. T. Cuong, S. Goto and H. L. Truong, their situation is quite a bit of restricted, so we are eager to try the generalization of their results.
The present paper deals with various aspects of the notion of almost Cohen-Macaulay property, which was introduced and studied by Roberts, Singh and Srinivas. We employ the definition of almost zero modules as defined by a value map, which is different from the version of Gabber-Ramero. We prove that, if the local cohomology modules of an algebra $T$ of certain type over a local Noetherian ring are almost zero, $T$ maps to a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. Then we study how the almost Cohen-Macaulay property behaves under almost faithfully flat extension. As a consequence, we study the structure o…
We study closure operations over a local domain R that satisfy a set of axioms introduced by Geoffrey Dietz. The existence of a closure operation satisfying the axioms (called a Dietz closure) is equivalent to the existence of a big Cohen-Macaulay module for R. We give an additional axiom (the Algebra Axiom), such that the existence of a Dietz closure satisfying this axiom is equivalent to the existence of a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. We prove that many closure operations satisfy the Algebra Axiom, whether or not they are Dietz closures. We discuss the smallest big Cohen-Macaulay algebra clos…
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
Let $R$ be an algebra essentially of finite type over a field $k$ and let $Ω_k(R)$ be its module of Kähler differentials over $k$. If $R$ is a homogeneous complete intersection and $\mathrm{char}(k)=0$, we prove that $Ω_k(R)$ is of linear type whenever its Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay and locally at every homogeneous prime $\mathfrak{p}$ the embedding dimension of $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ is at most twice its dimension.
Let $R$ be a commutative, local, Noetherian ring. In a past article, the first author developed a theory of $R$-algebras, termed seeds, that can be mapped to balanced big Cohen-Macaulay $R$-algebras. In prime characteristic $p$, seeds can be characterized based on the existence of certain colon-killers, integral extensions of seeds are seeds, tensor products of seeds are seeds, and the seed property is stable under base change between complete, local domains. As a result, there exist directed systems of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras over complete, local domains. In this work, we will show that t…
Generic Bourbaki ideals were introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of Rees algebras of modules. In this article we prove that the same technique can sometimes be used to investigate the Cohen-Macaulay property of fiber cones of modules and to study the defining ideal of Rees algebras. This is possible as long as the Rees algebra of a given module $E$ is a deformation of the Rees algebra of a generic Bourbaki ideal $I$ of $E$. Our main technical result provides a deformation condition that in fact extends the applicability of generic Bourbaki ideals to…
In this paper, we consider a finite, torsion-free module $E$ over a Gorenstein local ring. We provide sufficient conditions for $E$ to be of linear type and for the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$ of $E$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results are obtained by constructing a generic Bourbaki $I$ ideal of $E$ and exploiting properties of the residual intersections of $I$.
We consider vector-spread Borel ideals. We show that these ideals have linear quotients and thereby we determine the graded Betti numbers and the bigraded Poincaré series. A characterization of the extremal Betti numbers of such a class of ideals is given. Finally, we classify all Cohen-Macaulay vector-spread Borel ideals.
Macaulay's theorem and Fröberg's conjecture deal with the Hilbert function of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings $S$ over a field $K$. In this short note we present some questions related to variants of Macaulay's theorem and Fröberg's conjecture for $K$-subalgebras of polynomial rings. In details, given a subspace $V$ of forms of degree $d$ we consider the $K$-subalgebra $K[V]$ of $S$ generated by $V$. What can be said about Hilbert function of $K[V]$? The analogy with the ideal case suggests several questions. To state them we start by recalling Macaulay's theorem, Fröberg's conjecture a…
We study the stable hom relation for Cohen-Macaulay modules over Gorenstein local algebras. We give the sufficient condition to make the stable hom relation a partial order when the base algebra is of finite representation type. As an application, we give the description of stable degenerations of Cohen-Macaulay modules over simple singularities of several types by using the stable hom relation.
This is the second paper in a series of three papers. In the first paper of the series, "Artinian Gorenstein algebras with linear resolutions", (arXiv:1306.2523, J. of Algebra, to appear) we prove that it is possible to give the minimal resolution of the rings from the title in terms of the coefficients of the corresponding Macaulay inverse system. In this context, the word "give" means, "give in a polynomial manner". The first paper in the series proves, essentially, an existence theorem. The second and third papers in the series construct the explicit formulas for the resolution. The present…
We discuss algebraic and homological properties of binomial edge ideals associated to graphs which are obtained by gluing of subgraphs and the formation of cones.
T. Harima and J. Watanabe studied the Lefschetz properties of free extension Artinian algebras $C$ over a base $A$ with fibre $B$. The free extensions are deformations of the usual tensor product, when $C$ is also Gorenstein, so are $A$ and $B$, and it is natural to ask for the relation among the Macaulay dual generators for the algebras. Writing a dual generator $F$ for $C$ as a homogeneous "polynomial" in $T$ and the dual variables for $B$, and given the dual generator for $B$, we give sufficient conditions on $F$ that ensure that $C$ is a free extension of $A={\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$ with fiber $B…
Let R be an excellent local domain of positive characteristic, and R^+ denote the integral closure of R in an algebraic closure of its fraction field. Hochster and Huneke proved that R^+ is a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra for R, and asked if there is a smaller R-algebra with the Cohen-Macaulay property. In this paper we establish the existence of a smaller big Cohen-Macaulay algebra which is, moreover, a separable extension.
By finding a p-adic obstruction, we construct many examples of positive characteristic complete noetherian local rings which do not admit any module-finite Cohen-Macaulay extension. These examples should be contrasted with a result of Hochster-Huneke: the union of all finite extensions is always Cohen-Macaulay.
Cohen Macaulay property of fiber cones of ideals is characterized in terms of its Hilbert series. Hilbert series of fiber cones of ideals with minimal mixed multiplicity is calculated. It is proved that the fiber cone of an m-primary ideal I with minimal mixed multiplicity is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if its reduction number is atmost one. Hilbert series of fiber cones of ideals generated by quadratic sequences in standard graded rings is computed by deforming it to a face ring of a simplicial complex. Applications are given to defining ideals of monomial projective space curves lying on the …
Given two determinantal rings over a field k. We consider the Rees algebra of the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety. When the Rees algebra and the Symmetric algebra coincide, we show that the Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay.
There is a well known link from the first topic in the title to the third one. In this paper we thread that link through the second topic. The central result is a criterion for the tensor nilpotence of morphisms of perfect complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in terms of a numerical invariant of the complexes known as their level. Applications to local rings include a strengthening of the Improved New Intersection Theorem, short direct proofs of several results equivalent to it, and lower bounds on the ranks of the modules in every finite free complex that admits a structure of differe…
We give a canonical construction of a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay algebra for a domain of finite type over $\mathbb C$ by taking ultraproducts of absolute integral closures in positive characteristic. This yields a new tight closure characterization of rational singularities in characteristic zero.
We prove that $t$-spread principal Borel ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and study their powers. We show that these ideals possess the strong persistence property and compute their limit depth.
Let I be a divisorial ideal of a strongly F-regular ring R. Watanabe asked if the symbolic Rees algebra R_s(I) is Cohen-Macaulay whenever it is Noetherian. We develop the notion of multi-symbolic Rees algebras, and use this to show that R_s(I) is indeed Cohen-Macaulay whenever a certain auxiliary ring is finitely generated over R.
Let $(R, {\mathfrak m})$ be a Noetherian local ring and let $I$ be an $R$-ideal. Inspired by the work of Hübl and Huneke, we look for conditions that guarantee the Cohen-Macaulayness of the special fiber ring ${\mathcal F}={\mathcal R}/{\mathfrak m}{\mathcal R}$ of $I$, where ${\mathcal R}$ denotes the Rees algebra of $I$. Our key idea is to require `good' intersection properties as well as `few' homogeneous generating relations in low degrees. In particular, if $I$ is a strongly Cohen-Macaulay $R$-ideal with $G_{\ell}$ and the expected reduction number, we conclude that ${\mathcal F}$ is alwa…
In this paper, we study arithmetic Macaulayfication of projective schemes and Rees algebras of ideals. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a nonsingular projective scheme to have an arithmetic Macaulayfication. If the scheme is not necessarily nonsingular, we show that our condition give a sufficient condition for the existence of an arithmetic Macaulayfication. We also study truncated Rees algebra of an ideal. We show that the truncated Rees algebra R_λ(I) of an ideal I is alway Cohen-Macaulay for λlarge enough in some important situations.
We prove a version of weakly functorial big Cohen-Macaulay algebras that suffices to establish Hochster-Huneke's vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor in mixed characteristic. As a corollary, we prove an analog of Boutot's theorem that direct summands of regular rings are pseudo-rational in mixed characteristic. Our proof uses perfectoid spaces and is inspired by the recent breakthroughs on the direct summand conjecture by André and Bhatt.
In this paper we consider multi-graded extended Rees algebras of zero dimensional ideals which are Cohen-Macaulay (CM) with minimal multiplicity. We show that the minimal multiplicity property can occur only for the ordinary extended Rees algebra and the bigraded extended Rees algebra. For the bigraded extended Rees algebra we find necessary conditions for it to be CM with minimal multiplicity. We also produce bigraded Rees algebras which are Cohen-Macaulay with minimal multiplicity.
In this article, we generalize a previously defined set of axioms for a closure operation that induces balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules. While the original axioms were only defined in terms of finitely generated modules, these new ones will apply to all modules over a local domain. The new axioms will lead to a notion of phantom extensions for general modules, and we will prove that all modules that are phantom extensions can be modified into balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules and are also solid modules. As a corollary, if $R$ has characteristic $p>0$ and is $F$-finite, then all solid alge…
Let $\k$ be a field and let $A$ be a standard $\mathbb{N}$-graded $\k$-algebra. Using numerical information of some invariants in the primary decomposition of $0$ in $A$, namely the so called dimension filtration, we associate a bivariate polynomial $\BW(A;t,w)$, that we call the Björner--Wachs polynomial, to $A$. It is shown that the Björner--Wachs polynomial is an algebraic counterpart of the combinatorially defined $h$-triangle of finite simplicial complexes introduced by Björner \& Wachs. We provide a characterisation of sequentially Cohen--Macaulay algebras in terms of the effect of the r…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce new invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Our focus is the class of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical ideal. Attached to each such ring R with a canonical ideal C, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of C--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. We enlarge this list with other integers--the roots of R and several canonical degrees. The latter are multiplicity based functions of the Rees algebra of C.
Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). Our work extends previous studies on the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees algebras.
We associate to every equicharacteristic zero Noetherian local ring $R$ a faithfully flat ring extension which is an ultraproduct of rings of various prime characteristics, in a weakly functorial way. Since such ultraproducts carry naturally a non-standard Frobenius, we can define a new tight closure operation on $R$ by mimicking the positive characteristic functional definition of tight closure. This approach avoids the use of generalized Néron Desingularization and only relies on Rotthaus' result on Artin Approximation in characteristic zero. If $R$ is moreover equidimensional and universall…
Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables of degree $d$ over a field $K$. Let $A(F)$ be the associated Artinian graded $K$-algebra. If $B \subset A(F)$ is a subalgebra of $A(F)$ which is Gorenstein with the same socle degree as $A(F)$, we describe the Macaulay dual generator for $B$ in terms of $F$. Furthermore when $n=d$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the polynomial $F$ for $A(F)$ to be a complete intersection.
By extending some basic results of Grothendieck and Foxby about local cohomology to commutative DG-rings, we prove new amplitude inequalities about finite DG-modules of finite injective dimension over commutative local DG-rings, complementing results of Jørgensen and resolving a recent conjecture of Minamoto. When these inequalities are equalities, we arrive to the notion of a local-Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We make a detailed study of this notion, showing that much of the classical theory of Cohen-Macaulay rings and modules can be generalized to the derived setting, and that there are many natu…
