Let $R^h$ denote the polynomial ring in variables $x_1,\,\ldots,\, x_h$ over a specified field $K$. We consider all of these rings simultaneously, and in each use lexicographic (lex) monomial order with $x_1 > \cdots > x_h$. Given a fixed homogeneous ideal $I$ in $R^h$, for each $d$ there is unique lex ideal generated in degree at most $d$ whose Hilbert function agrees with the Hilbert function of $I$ up to degree $d$. When we consider $IR^N$ for $N \geq h$, the set $\mathfrak{B}_d(I,N)$ of minimal generators for this lex ideal in degree at most $d$ may change, but $\mathfrak{B}_d(I,N)$ is constant for all $N \gg 0$. We let $\mathfrak{B}_d(I)$ denote the set of generators one obtains for all $N \gg 0$, and we let $b_d = b_d(I)$ be its cardinality. The sequences $b_1, \, \ldots, \, b_d, \, \ldots$ obtained in this way may grow very fast. Remarkably, even when $I = (x_1^2, x_2^2)$, one obtains a very interesting sequence, 0, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 924, 409620,$\,\ldots$. This sequence is the same as $H_{d-1} + 1$ for $d \geq 2$, where $H_d$ is the $d\,$th Hamilton number. The Hamilton numbers were studied by Hamilton and by Hammond and Sylvester because of their occurrence in a counting problem connected with the use of Tschirnhaus transformations in manipulating polynomial equations.
We introduce the fractal expansions, sequences of integers associated to a number. We show that these sequences characterize the O-sequences and encode some information on lex segment ideals. Moreover, we introduce a numerical functions called fractal functions, and we show that fractal functions can be used to classify the Hilbert functions of bigraded algebras.
We study the component structures of some standard-graded Hilbert schemes closely related to a Hilbert scheme of curves studied by Gotzmann. In particular, we encounter examples of singular lex-segment points lying on two and three irreducible components. We find further singular lex-segment points at nearby Hilbert schemes. We conclude by showing that the analogous example at the Hilbert scheme of twisted cubics also has a singular lex-segment point.
Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a lexsegment ideal, generated by monomials of degree $d$. The main aim of this paper is to characterize when the Hilbert depth of $I$ will be 1, in the standard graded case. In addition to this, we will give an estimate of depth of squarefree monomial ideals, generalizing a result of Popescu. We will also show that Stanley conjecture holds for squarefree stable ideals, in the multigraded case.
The $n$-type vectors introduced by Geramita, Harima and Shin are in 1-1 correspondence with the Hilbert functions Artinian of lex ideals. Letting $\mathbb{A} =\{a_1,..., a_n\}$ define the degrees of a regular sequence, we construct ${\rm lpp}_{\le\mathbb{A}}$-vectors which are in 1-1 correspondence with the Hilbert functions of certain lex plus powers ideals (depending on $\mathbb{A}$). This construction enables us to show that the residual of a lex plus powers ideal in an appropriate regular sequence is again a lex plus powers ideal. We then use this result to show that the Eisenbud-Green-Har…
In this paper, we continue the study of which $h$-vectors $\H=(1,3,..., h_{d-1}, h_d, h_{d+1})$ can be the Hilbert function of a level algebra by investigating Artinian level algebras of codimension 3 with the condition $β_{2,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{1,d+1}(I^{\rm lex})$, where $I^{\rm lex}$ is the lex-segment ideal associated with an ideal $I$. Our approach is to adopt an homological method called {\it Cancellation Principle}: the minimal free resolution of $I$ is obtained from that of $I^{\rm lex}$ by canceling some adjacent terms of the same shift. We prove that when $β_{1,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{…
We study almost reverse lexicographic ideals in a polynomial ring over a field of arbitrary characteristic. We give a criterion for a given sequence of nonnegative integers to be the Hilbert function of an almost reverse lexicographic ideal in the polynomial ring. Then it will be shown that every Fröberg sequence satisfies this criterion.
Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all color…
We prove an inequality between Hilbert functions of local cohomology modules supported in the homogeneous maximal ideal of standard graded algebras over a field, within the framework of embeddings of posets of Hilbert functions. As a main application, we prove an analogue for local cohomology of Evans' Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture for Betti numbers. This results implies some cases of the classical Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture, namely an inequality between extremal Betti numbers. In particular, for the classes of ideals for which the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture is currently known, the projective…
We give two algorithms for computing the Hilbert depth of a \emph{graded ideal} in the polynomial ring. These algorithms work efficiently for (squarefree) lex ideals. As a consequence, we construct counterexamples to some conjectures made by Shen in \cite{B:Sh2}.
Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic 0 with each $°x_i = 1$. Given arbitrary integers $i$ and $j$ with $2 \leq i \leq n$ and $3 \leq j \leq n$, we will construct a monomial ideal $I \subset A$ such that (i) $β_k(I) < β_k(\Gin(I))$ for all $k < i$, (ii) $β_i(I) = β_i(\Gin(I))$, (iii) $β_\ell(\Gin(I)) < β_\ell(\Lex(I))$ for all $\ell < j$ and (iv) $β_j(\Gin(I)) = β_j(\Lex(I))$, where $\Gin(I)$ is the generic initial ideal of $I$ with respect to the reverse lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > >... > x_n$ and where $\Lex(I)$ is…
We extend a result of Caviglia and Sbarra to a polynomial ring with base field of any characteristic. Given a homogeneous ideal containing both a piecewise lex ideal and an ideal generated by powers of the variables, we find a lex ideal with the following property: the ideal in the polynomial ring generated by the piecewise lex ideal, the ideal of powers, and the lex ideal has the same Hilbert function and Betti numbers at least as large as those of the original ideal.
For a standard graded algebra $R$, we consider embeddings of the the poset of Hilbert functions of quotients of $R$ into the poset of ideals of $R$, as a way of classification of Hilbert functions. There are examples of rings for which such embeddings do not exist. We describe how the embedding can be lifted to certain ring extensions, which is then used in the case of polarization and distraction. A version of a theorem of Clements--Lindström is proved. We exhibit a condition on the embedding that ensures that the classification of Hilbert functions is obtained with images of lexicographic se…
Let $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ with each $\mathrm{deg}\ x_i = 1$ and $I \subset S$ a homogeneous ideal of $S$ with $\dim S/I = d$. The Hilbert series of $S/I$ is of the form $h_{S/I}(λ)/(1 - λ)^d$, where $h_{S/I}(λ) = h_0 + h_1λ+ h_2λ^2 + \cdots + h_sλ^s$ with $h_s \neq 0$ is the $h$-polynomial of $S/I$. Given arbitrary integers $r \geq 1$ and $s \geq 1$, a lexsegment ideal $I$ of $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$, where $n \leq \max\{r, s\} + 2$, satisfying $\mathrm{reg}(S/I) = r$ and $ \mathrm{deg}\ h_{S/I}(λ) = s$ will be constructed.
Sets of zero-dimensional ideals in the polynomial ring $k[x,y]$ that share the same leading term ideal with respect to a given term ordering are known to be affine spaces called Gröbner cells. Conca-Valla and Constantinescu parametrize such Gröbner cells in terms of certain canonical Hilbert-Burch matrices for the lexicographical and degree-lexicographical term orderings, respectively. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $(x,y)$-primary ideals in Gröbner cells which is compatible with the local structure of such ideals. More precisely, we extend previous results to the local setting by…
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Green's Hyperplane Restriction Theorem to the case of modules over the polynomial ring, providing in particular an upper bound for the Hilbert function of the general linear restriction of a module M in a degree d by the corresponding Hilbert function of a lexicographic module.
We study, by means of embeddings of Hilbert functions, a class of rings which we call Shakin rings, i.e. quotients K[X_1,...,X_n]/a of a polynomial ring over a field K by ideals a=L+P which are the sum of a piecewise lex-segment ideal L, as defined by Shakin, and a pure powers ideal P. Our main results extend Abedelfatah's recent work on the Eisenbud-Green-Harris conjecture, Shakin's generalization of Macaulay and Bigatti-Hulett-Pardue theorems on Betti numbers and, when char(K)=0, Mermin-Murai theorem on the Lex-Plus-Power inequality, from monomial regular sequences to a larger class of ideal…
A short new proof of the fact that all shifted complexes are fixed by reverse lexicographic shifting is given. A notion of lexicographic shifting, $Δ_{\lex}$ -- an operation that transforms a monomial ideal of $S=\field[x_i: i\in\N]$ that is finitely generated in each degree into a squarefree strongly stable ideal -- is defined and studied. It is proved that (in contrast to the reverse lexicographic case) a squarefree strongly stable ideal $I\subset S$ is fixed by lexicographic shifting if and only if $I$ is a universal squarefree lexsegment ideal (abbreviated USLI) of $S$. Moreover, in the ca…
Gotzmann's Persistence states that the growth of an arbitrary ideal can be controlled by comparing it to the growth of the lexicographic ideal. This is used, for instance, in finding equations which cut out the Hilbert scheme (of subschemes of $\mathbf{P}^n$ with fixed Hilbert polynomial) sitting inside an appropriate Grassmannian. We introduce the notion of an {\it extremal ideal} which extends the notion of the lex ideal to other term orders. We then state and prove a version of Gotzmann's theorem for these ideals, valid in an open subset of a Grassmannian.
Let Hilb^p be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of P^n with Hilbert polynomial p\in Q[t] over a field K of characteristic zero. By bounding below the cohomological Hilbert functions of the points of Hilb^p we define locally closed subspaces of the Hilbert scheme. The aim of this paper is to show that some of these subspaces are connected. For this we exploit the edge ideals constructed by D. Mall. It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals with respect to the reverse lexicographic term order are generic initial ideals.
What can be said about the subalgebras of the polynomial ring, with minimal or maximal Hilbert function? This question was discussed in a recent paper by M. Boij and A. Conca. In this paper we study the subalgebras generated in degree two with minimal Hilbert function. The problem to determine the generators of these algebras transfers into a combinatorial problem on counting maximal north-east lattice paths inside a shifted Ferrers diagram. We conjecture that the subalgebras generated in degree two with minimal Hilbert function are generated by an initial Lex or RevLex segment.
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of almost reverse lexicographic ideals with the Hilbert function of a complete intersection. More precisely, over a field $K$, we give a new constructive proof of the existence of the almost revlex ideal $J\subset K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, with the same Hilbert function as a complete intersection defined by $n$ forms of degrees $d_1\leq \dots \leq d_n$. Properties of the reduction numbers for an almost revlex ideal have an important role in our inductive and constructive proof, which is different from the more general construction given by Pardue in 2010. We…
We study inequalities between graded Betti numbers of ideals in a standard graded algebra over a field and their images under embedding maps, defined earlier by us in [Math. Z. 274, (2013), no. 3-4, pp. 809-819; arXiv:1009.4488]. We show that if graded Betti numbers do not decrease when we replace ideals in an algebra by their embedded versions, then the same behaviour is carried over to ring extensions. As a corollary we give alternative inductive proofs of earlier results of Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue, Mermin-Peeva-Stillman and Murai. We extend a hypersurface restriction theorem of Herzog-Popes…
Strongly stable monomial ideals are important in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. Prompted, for example, by combinatorial approaches for studying Hilbert schemes and the existence of maximal total Betti numbers among saturated ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, in this note we present three algorithms to produce all strongly stable ideals with certain prescribed properties: the saturated strongly stable ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, the almost lexsegment ideals with a given Hilbert polynomial, and the saturated strongly stable ideals with a given Hilbe…
Let $R = K[x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4]$ be the polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero. For the ideal $(x_1^a, x_2^b, x_3^c, x_4^d) \subset R$, where at least one of $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ is equal to two, we prove that its generic initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order is the almost revlex ideal corresponding to the same Hilbert function.
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between reduction numbers and Borel-fixed ideals in all characteristics. By definition, Borel-fixed ideals are closed under certain specializations which is similar to the strong stability. We will estimate the number of monomials which can be specialized to a given monomial. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial version of the well-known Eakin-Sathaye's theorem which bounds the reduction number in terms of the Hilbert function. Furthermore, we show that the bound of Eakin-Sathaye's theorem is attained by the reduction number of a lex-se…
Let I be a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring P over a field. By Macaulay's Theorem, there exists a lexicographic ideal L=Lex(I) with the same Hilbert function as I. Peeva has proved that the Betti numbers of P/I can be obtained from the graded Betti numbers of P/L by a suitable sequence of consecutive cancellations. We extend this result to any ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m) by passing through the associated graded ring. To this purpose it will be necessary to enlarge the list of the allowed cancellations. Taking advantage of Eliahou-Kervaire's construction, several applications ar…
