We characterize which permutational wreath products W^(X)\rtimes G are finitely presented. This occurs if and only if G and W are finitely presented, G acts on X with finitely generated stabilizers, and with finitely many orbits on the cartesian square X^2. On the one hand, this extends a result of G. Baumslag about standard wreath products; on the other hand, this provides nontrivial examples of finitely presented groups. For instance, we obtain two quasi-isometric finitely presented groups, one of which is torsion-free and the other has an infinite torsion subgroup.
Motivated by the characterization above, we discuss the following question: which finitely generated groups can have a finitely generated subgroup with finitely many double cosets? The discussion involves properties related to the structure of maximal subgroups, and to the profinite topology.
We investigate the preservation of the properties of being finitely generated and finitely presented under both direct and wreath products of monoid acts. A monoid $M$ is said to preserve property $\mathcal{P}$ in direct products if, for any two $M$-acts $A$ and $B$, the direct product $A\times B$ has property $\mathcal{P}$ if and only if both $A$ and $B$ have property $\mathcal{P}$. It is proved that the monoids $M$ that preserve finite generation (resp. finitely presentability) in direct products are precisely those for which the diagonal $M$-act $M\times M$ is finitely generated (resp. fini…
We consider the finitely generated groups acting on a regular tree with almost prescribed local action. We show that these groups embed as cocompact irreducible lattices in some locally compact wreath products. This provides examples of finitely generated simple groups quasi-isometric to a wreath product $C \wr F$, where $C$ is a finite group and $F$ a non-abelian free group.
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a sequence of finite perfect transitive permutation groups with uniformly bounded number of generators. We prove that the infinitely iterated wreath product in product action of the groups in $\mathcal{S}$ is topologically finitely generated, provided that the actions of the groups in $\mathcal{S}$ are not regular. We prove that our bound has the right asymptotic behaviour. We also deduce that other infinitely iterated mixed wreath products of groups in $\mathcal{S}$ are finitely generated. Finally we apply our methods to find explicitly two generators of infinitely iterat…
For a finitely generated regular wreath product, the metric is known, but its computation can be an NP-complete problem. Also, it is not known for the nonregular case. In this article, a metric estimate is defined for regular wreath products which can be computed in polynomial time, based on the metrics of the factors. This estimate is then used to study the distortion of some natural subgroups of a wreath product. Finally, the metric estimate is generalized to the nonregular case.
We study a generalisation of the family of non-(virtually pro-$p$) hereditarily just infinite profinite groups introduced by J.\! S.\! Wilson in 2010. We prove that this family contains groups of finite lower rank. We also show that many groups in this family are not topologically finitely presentable.
We study infinitely iterated wreath products of finite permutation groups with respect to product actions. In particular, we prove that, for every non-empty class of finite simple groups $\mathcal{X}$, there exists a finitely generated hereditarily just infinite profinite group $W$ with composition factors in $\mathcal{X}$ such that any countably based profinite group with composition factors in $\mathcal{X}$ can be embedded into $W$. Additionally we investigate when infinitely iterated wreath products of finite simple groups with respect to product actions are co-Hopfian or non-co-Hopfian.
The study of the poset of hyperbolic structures on a group $G$ was initiated in a paper by C.Abbott, S.Balasubramanya and D.Osin. However, this poset is still very far from being understood and several questions remain unanswered. In this paper, we give a complete description of the poset of hyperbolic structures on the lamplighter groups and obtain some partial results about more general wreath products. As a consequence of this result, we answer two open questions regarding quasi-parabolic structures: we give an example of a group with an uncountable chain of quasi-parabolic structures and p…
Finitely generated (non-abelian) free metabelian pro-p groups, and wreath products of f.g. free abelian pro-p groups, are all finitely axiomatizable in the class of all profinite groups.
This is the author's second paper treating the double coset problem for classical groups. Let $G$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$. The double coset problem consists of classifying the pairs $H,J$ of closed connected subgroups of $G$ with finitely many $(H,J)$-double cosets in $G$. The critical setup occurs when one of $H,J$, say $H$, is reductive, and $J$ is a parabolic subgroup. Assume that $G$ is a classical group, $H$ is simple and $J$ is a maximal parabolic $P_k$, the stabilizer of a totally singular $k$-space. Then most candidates have $k=1$ or $k=2$. The case…
We study generalisations of conjugacy separability in restricted wreath products of groups. We provide an effective upper bound for $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of a wreath product $A \wr B$ in terms of the $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of $A$ and $B$, the growth of $\mathcal{C}$-cyclic subgroup separability of $B$, and the $\mathcal{C}$-residual girth of $B.$ As an application, we provide a characterisation of when $A \wr B$ is $p$-conjugacy separable. We use this characterisation to the provide for each prime $p$ an example of wreath products with infinite base group that are …
A group has finite palindromic width if there exists $n$ such that every element can be expressed as a product of $n$ or fewer palindromic words. We show that if $G$ has finite palindromic width with respect to some generating set, then so does $G \wr \mathbb{Z}^{r}$. We also give a new, self-contained, proof that finitely generated metabelian groups have finite palindromic width. Finally, we show that solvable groups satisfying the maximal condition on normal subgroups (max-n) have finite palindromic width.
In this paper, we compute an upper bound for the Dehn function of a finitely presented metabelian group. In addition, we prove that the same upper bound works for the relative Dehn function of a finitely generated metabelian group. We also show that every wreath product of a free abelian group of finite rank with a finitely generated abelian group can be embedded into a metabelian group with exponential Dehn function.
We prove that all finitely generated free metabelian groups are permutation stable. This partially answers to the question asked by Levit and Lubotzky whether all finitely generated metabelian groups are permutation stable. Our proof extends the range of application of Levit-Lubotzky's method, which is used to show permutation stability of permutational wreath products of finitely generated abelian groups, to non-split and non-permutational metabelian groups.
The index of a subgroup of a group counts the number of cosets of that subgroup. A subgroup of finite index often shares structural properties with the group, and the existence of a subgroup of finite index with some particular property can therefore imply useful structural information for the overgroup. A developed theory of cosets in inverse semigroups exists, originally due to Schein: it is defined only for closed inverse subsemigroups, and the structural correspondences between an inverse semigroup and a closed inverse subsemigroup of finite index are weaker than in the group case. Neverth…
We show the connection between the relative Dehn function of a finitely generated metabelian group and the distortion function of a corresponding subgroup in the wreath product of two free abelian groups of finite rank. Further, we show that if a finitely generated metabelian group $G$ is an extension of an abelian group by $\mathbb Z$ the relative Dehn function of $G$ is polynomially bounded. Therefore, if $G$ is finitely presented, the Dehn function is bounded above by the exponential function up to equivalence.
We derive double coset formulae for the genus and extended genus of a finitely generated nilpotent group G, using the notions of bounded and bounded above automorphisms of $\prod G_S$, which are defined relative to a fixed fracture square for G.
We give new and improved results on the freeness of subgroups of free profinite groups: A subgroup containing the normal closure of a finite word in the elements of a basis is free; Every infinite index subgroup of a finitely generated nonabelian free profinite group is contained in an infinitely generated free profinite subgroup. These results are combined with the twisted wreath product approach of Haran, an observation on the action of compact groups, and a rank counting argument to prove a conjecture of Bary-Soroker, Fehm, and Wiese, thus providing a quite general sufficient condition for …
The knapsack problem for groups was introduced by Miasnikov, Nikolaev, and Ushakov. It is defined for each finitely generated group $G$ and takes as input group elements $g_1,\ldots,g_n,g\in G$ and asks whether there are $x_1,\ldots,x_n\ge 0$ with $g_1^{x_1}\cdots g_n^{x_n}=g$. We study the knapsack problem for wreath products $G\wr H$ of groups $G$ and $H$. Our main result is a characterization of those wreath products $G\wr H$ for which the knapsack problem is decidable. The characterization is in terms of decidability properties of the indiviual factors $G$ and $H$. To this end, we introduc…
From any two median spaces $X,Y$, we construct a new median space $X \circledast Y$, referred to as the diadem product of $X$ and $Y$, and we show that this construction is compatible with wreath products in the following sense: given two finitely generated groups $G,H$ and two (equivariant) coarse embeddings into median spaces $X,Y$, there exist a(n equivariant) coarse embedding $G\wr H \to X \circledast Y$. As an application, we prove that $$α_1(G \wr H) \geq \min(α_1(G),α_1(H))/2 \text{ for all finitely generated groups $G,H$,}$$ where $α_1(\cdot)$ denotes the $\ell^1$-compression. As an ot…
In this article we generalize the theory of subgroup graphs of subgroups of free groups to finite index subgroups $H$ of finitely generated groups $G$. We study and prove various properties of $H$ in relation to its subgroup graph $Γ(H)$. For a finitely generated group $G$ we consider the poset $P_{\text{fi}}(G)$ of all right cosets of all proper finite index subgroups of $G$. We use the theory of subgroup graphs to prove that for many finitely generated infinite groups the order complex $ΔP_{\text{fi}} (G)$ and the corresponding nerve complex are contractible.
Let w be a group-word. Suppose that the set of all w-values in a profinite group G is contained in a union of countably many cosets of subgroups. We are concerned with the question to what extent the structure of the verbal subgroup w(G) depends on the properties of the subgroups. We prove the following theorem. Let C be a class of groups closed under taking subgroups, quotients, and such that in any group the product of finitely many normal C-subgroups is again a C-subgroup. If w is a multilinear commutator and G is a profinite group such that the set of all w-values is contained in a union o…
