In this article, we study the asymptotic behaviour of conjugacy separability for wreath products of abelian groups. We fully characterise the asymptotic class in the case of lamplighter groups and give exponential upper and lower bounds for generalised lamplighter groups. In the case where the base group is infinite, we give superexponential lower and upper bounds. We apply our results to obtain lower bounds for conjugacy depth functions of various wreath products of groups where the acting group is not abelian.
We prove that the complexity of the Conjugacy Problems for wreath products and for free solvable groups is decidable in polynomial time. For the wreath product AwrB, we must assume the decidability in polynomial time of the Conjugacy Problems for A and B and of the power problem in B. We obtain the result by making the algorithm for the Conjugacy Problem described in a paper of Matthews run in polynomial time. Using this result and properties of the Magnus embedding, we show that the Conjugacy and Conjugacy Search Problems in free solvable groups are computable in polynomial time.
In analogy to the disjoint cycle decomposition in permutation groups, Ore and Specht define a decomposition of elements of the full monomial group and exploit this to describe conjugacy classes and centralisers of elements in the full monomial group. We generalise their results to wreath products whose base group need not be finite and whose top group acts faithfully on a finite set. We parameterise conjugacy classes and centralisers of elements in such wreath products explicitly. For finite wreath products, our approach yields efficient algorithms for finding conjugating elements, conjugacy c…
We study generalisations of conjugacy separability in restricted wreath products of groups. We provide an effective upper bound for $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of a wreath product $A \wr B$ in terms of the $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of $A$ and $B$, the growth of $\mathcal{C}$-cyclic subgroup separability of $B$, and the $\mathcal{C}$-residual girth of $B.$ As an application, we provide a characterisation of when $A \wr B$ is $p$-conjugacy separable. We use this characterisation to the provide for each prime $p$ an example of wreath products with infinite base group that are …
We describe an effective version of the conjugacy problem and study it for wreath products and free solvable groups. The problem involves estimating the length of short conjugators between two elements of the group, a notion which leads to the definition of the conjugacy length function. We show that for free solvable groups the conjugacy length function is at most cubic. For wreath products the behaviour depends on the conjugacy length function of the two groups involved, as well as subgroup distortion within the quotient group.
We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gonçalves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

In this paper we consider groups of the form $G\wr L$, where the set of generators naturally extends the sets of generators of $G$ and $L$, and $L$ admits a Cayley graph that is a tree. We show how one can compute the conjugacy growth series of such groups in terms of the standard and conjugacy growth series of $G$. We then provide explicit formulas for groups of the form $G\wr \mathbb{Z}$ and $G\wr (C_2*C_2)$. We also prove that the radius of convergence of the conjugacy growth series of $G\wr L$, for any $G$ and $L$ as above, is the same as the radius of convergence of its standard growth se…
We examine the conjugacy growth series of all wreath products of the finitary permutation groups $\text{Sym}(X)$ and $\text{Alt}(X)$ for an infinite set $X$. We determine their asymptotics, and we characterize the limiting behavior between the $\text{Alt}(X)$ and $\text{Sym}(X)$ wreath products. In particular, their ratios form a limit if and only if the dimension of the symmetric wreath product is twice the dimension of the alternating wreath product.
We show that the conjugacy problem in a wreath product $A \wr B$ is uniform-$\mathsf{TC}^0$-Turing-reducible to the conjugacy problem in the factors $A$ and $B$ and the power problem in $B$. If $B$ is torsion free, the power problem for $B$ can be replaced by the slightly weaker cyclic submonoid membership problem for $B$. Moreover, if $A$ is abelian, the cyclic subgroup membership problem suffices, which itself is uniform-$\mathsf{AC}^0$-many-one-reducible to the conjugacy problem in $A \wr B$. Furthermore, under certain natural conditions, we give a uniform $\mathsf{TC}^0$ Turing reduction f…
We classify $\mathcal{R}$- and $\mathcal{L}$-cross-sections of wreath products of finite inverse symmetric semigroups $\mathcal{IS}_m \wr_p \mathcal{IS}_n$ up to isomorphism. We show that every isomorphism of $\mathcal{R}$ ($\mathcal{L}$-) cross-sections of $\mathcal{IS}_m \wr_p \mathcal{IS}_n$ is a conjugacy. As an auxiliary result, we get that every isomorphism of $\mathcal{R}$- ($\mathcal{L}$-) cross-sections of $\mathcal{IS}_n$ is also a conjugacy. We also compute the number of non-isomorphic $\mathcal{R}$- ($\mathcal{L}$-) cross-sections of $\mathcal{IS}_m \wr_p \mathcal{IS}_n$.
In this article, we completely characterize the asymptotic behavior of conjugacy separability for the lamplighter groups. More generally, we give exponential upper and lower bounds for all wreath products of finitely generated abelian groups where the acting group is infinite and base group is finite.
We use wreath products to provide criteria for a group to be conjugacy separable or omnipotent. These criteria are in terms of virtual retractions onto cyclic subgroups. We give two applications: a straightforward topological proof of the theorem of Stebe that infinite-order elements of Fuchsian groups (of the first type) are conjugacy distinguished, and a proof that surface groups are omnipotent.
It is observed that the conjugacy growth series of the infinite fini-tary symmetric group with respect to the generating set of transpositions is the generating series of the partition function. Other conjugacy growth series are computed, for other generating sets, for restricted permutational wreath products of finite groups by the finitary symmetric group, and for alternating groups. Similar methods are used to compute usual growth polynomials and conjugacy growth polynomials for finite symmetric groups and alternating groups, with respect to various generating sets of transpositions. Comput…
We consider II$_1$ factors of the form $M=\bar{\bigotimes}_{G}N\rtimes G$, where either i) $N$ is a non-hyperfinite II$_1$ factor and $G$ is an ICC amenable group or ii) $N$ is a weakly rigid II$_1$ factor and $G$ is ICC group and where $G$ acts on $\bar{\bigotimes}_{G}N$ by Bernoulli shifts. We prove that isomorphism of two such factors implies cocycle conjugacy of the corresponding Bernoulli shift actions. In particular, the groups acting are isomorphic. As a consequence, we can distinguish between certain classes of group von Neumann algebras associated to wreath product groups.
We characterize the group property of being with infinite conjugacy classes (or icc, i.e. infinite and of which all conjugacy classes except {1} are infinite) for groups which are defined by an extension of groups. We give characterizations for all different kinds of extension: direct product, semi-direct product, wreath products and general extension. We also give many particular results when the groups involved verify some additional hypothesis. The icc property is correlated to the Theory of Von Neumann algebras since a necessary and sufficient condition for the Von Neumann algebra of a gro…
Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer charact…
Héthelyi and Külshammer showed that the number of conjugacy classes $k(G)$ of any solvable finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ is at least $(49p+1)/60$. Here an asymptotic generalization of this result is established. It is proved that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that for any finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ we have $k(G) \geq cp$.
We introduce the notion of generalized orbifold Euler characteristic associated to an arbitrary group, and study its properties. We then calculate generating functions of higher order (p-primary) orbifold Euler characteristic of symmetric products of a G-manifold M. As a corollary, we obtain a formula for the number of conjugacy classes of d-tuples of mutually commuting elements (of order powers of p) in the wreath product G wreath S_n in terms of corresponding numbers of G. As a topological application, we present generating functions of Euler characteristic of equivariant Morava K-theories o…
We show that the technical condition of solvable conjugacy bound, introduced in \cite{JOR1}, can be removed without affecting the main results of that paper. The result is a Burghelea-type description of the summands $HH_*^t(\BG)_{<x>}$ and $HC_*^t(\BG)_{<x>}$ for any bounding class $\B$, discrete group with word-length $(G,L)$ and conjugacy class $<x>\in <G>$. We use this description to prove the conjecture $\B$-SrBC of \cite{JOR1} for a class of groups that goes well beyond the cases considered in that paper. In particular, we show that the conjecture $\ell^1$-SrBC (the Strong Bass Conjectur…
For a group $G$ and a finite set $A$, denote by $\text{CA}(G;A)$ the monoid of all cellular automata over $A^G$ and by $\text{ICA}(G;A)$ its group of units. We study the minimal cardinality of a generating set, known as the rank, of $\text{ICA}(G;A)$. In the first part, when $G$ is a finite group, we give upper bounds for the rank in terms of the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. The case when $G$ is a finite cyclic group has been studied before, so here we focus on the cases when $G$ is a finite dihedral group or a finite Dedekind group. In the second part, we find a basic lowe…
Let G be a finite group and let M be a G-manifold. We introduce the concept of generalized orbifold invariants of M/G associated to an arbitrary group Gamma, an arbitrary Gamma-set, and an arbitrary covering space of a connected manifold Sigma whose fundamental group is Gamma. Our orbifold invariants have a natural and simple geometric origin in the context of locally constant G-equivariant maps from G-principal bundles over covering spaces of Sigma to the G-manifold M. We calculate generating functions of orbifold Euler characteristic of symmetric products of orbifolds associated to arbitrary…
