Let $ξ(n, x)$ be the local time at $x$ for a recurrent one-dimensional random walk in random environment after $n$ steps, and consider the maximum $ξ^*(n) = \max_x ξ(n,x)$. It is known that $\limsup ξ^*(n)/n$ is a positive constant a.s. We prove that $\liminf_n (\log\log\log n)ξ^*(n)/n$ is a positive constant a.s.; this answers a question of P. Révész (1990). The proof is based on an analysis of the {\em valleys /} in the environment, defined as the potential wells of record depth. In particular, we show that almost surely, at any time $n$ large enough, the random walker has spent almost all of its lifetime in the two deepest valleys of the environment it has encountered. We also prove a uniform exponential tail bound for the ratio of the expected total occupation time of a valley and the expected local time at its bottom.
We consider a one-dimensional recurrent random walk in random environment (RWRE). We show that the - suitably centered - empirical distributions of the RWRE converge weakly to a certain limit law which describes the stationary distribution of a random walk in an infinite valley. The construction of the infinite valley goes back to Golosov. As a consequence, we show weak convergence for both the maximal local time and the self-intersection local time of the RWRE and also determine the exact constant in the almost sure upper limit of the maximal local time.
We consider real-valued branching random walks and prove a large deviation result for the position of the rightmost particle. The position of the rightmost particle is the maximum of a collection of a random number of dependent random walks. We characterise the rate function as the solution of a variational problem. We consider the same random number of independent random walks, and show that the maximum of the branching random walk is dominated by the maximum of the independent random walks. For the maximum of independent random walks, we derive a large deviation principle as well. It turns o…
Consider a nearest-neighbor random walk with certain asymptotically zero drift on the positive half line. Let $M$ be the maximum of an excursion starting from $1$ and ending at $0.$ We study the distribution of $M$ and characterize its asymptotics, which is quite different from those of simple random walks.
We consider real random walks with finite variance. We prove an optimal integrability result for the diffusively rescaled maximum, when the walk or its bridge is conditioned to stay positive, or to avoid zero. As an application, we prove tightness under diffusive rescaling for general pinning and wetting models based on random walks.
This note is devoted to the study of the maximum of the excursion of a random walk with negative drift and light-tailed increments. More precisely, we determine the local asymptotics of the joint distribution of the length, maximum and the time at which this maximum is achieved. This result allows one to obtain a local central limit theorems for the length of the excursion conditioned on large values of the maximum.
In this paper, martingales related to simple random walks and their maximum process are investigated. First, a sufficient condition under which a function with three arguments, time, the random walk, and its maximum process becomes a martingale is presented, and as an application, an alternative way of deriving the Kennedy martingale is provided. Then, a complete characterization of a function with two arguments, the random walk and its maximum, being a martingale is presented. This martingale can be regarded as a discrete version of the Azéma--Yor martingale. As applications of discrete Azéma…
Sinai's walk is a recurrent one-dimensional nearest-neighbor random walk in random environment. It is known for a phenomenon of strong localization, namely, the walk spends almost all time at or near the bottom of deep valleys of the potential. Our main result shows a weakness of this localization phenomenon: with probability one, the zones where the walk stays for the most time can be far away from the sites where the walk spends the most time. In particular, this gives a negative answer to a problem of Erdős and Révész [Mathematical Structures--Computational Mathematics--Mathematical Modelli…
We study the asymptotics for the maximum on a random time interval of a random walk with a long-tailed distribution of its increments and negative drift. We extend to a general stopping time a result by Asmussen (1998), simplify its proof, and give some converses.
We consider asymptotics for the maximum of a modulated random walk whose increments $ξ_n^{X_n}$ are heavy-tailed. Of particular interest is the case where the modulating process $X$ is regenerative. Here we study also the maximum of the recursion given by $W_0=0$ and, for $n\ge1$, $W_n=\max(0,W_{n-1}+ξ_n^{X_n})$
Let F be a distribution function with negative mean and regularly varying right tail. Under a mild smoothness condition we derive higher order asymptotic expansions for the tail distribution of the maxima of the random walk generated by F. An application to ruin probabilities is developed.
This work is motivated by the study of some two-dimensional random walks in random environment (RWRE) with transition probabilities independent of one coordinate of the walk. These are non-reversible models and can not be treated by electrical network techniques. The proof of the recurrence of such RWRE needs new estimates for quenched return probabilities of a one-dimensional recurrent RWRE. We obtained these estimates by constructing suitable valleys for the potential. They imply that k independent walkers in the same one-dimensional (recurrent) environment will meet in the origin infinitely…
We obtain the leading orders of the maximum and the minimum of local times for the simple random walk on the two-dimensional torus at time proportional to the cover time. We also estimate the number of points with large (or small) values of the local times. These are analogues of estimates on the two-dimensional Gaussian free fields by Bolthausen, Deuschel, and Giacomin [Ann. Probab., 29 (2001)] and Daviaud [Ann. Probab., 34 (2006)], but we have different exponents from the case of the Gaussian free field.
Let $ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots$ be independent, identically distributed random variables with infinite mean $\mathbf E[|ξ_1|]=\infty.$ Consider a random walk $S_n=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_n$, a stopping time $τ=\min\{n\ge 1: S_n\le 0\}$ and let $M_τ=\max_{0\le i\le τ} S_i$. We study the asymptotics for $\mathbf P(M_τ>x),$ as $x\to\infty$.
We derive a lower bound for the probability that a random walk with i.i.d.\ increments and small negative drift $μ$ exceeds the value $x>0$ by time $N$. When the moment generating functions are bounded in an interval around the origin, this probability can be bounded below by $1-O(x|μ| \log N)$. The approach is elementary and does not use strong approximation theorems.
Let $η^*_n$ denote the maximum, at time $n$, of a nonlattice one-dimensional branching random walk $η_n$ possessing (enough) exponential moments. In a seminal paper, Aidekon demonstrated convergence of $η^*_n$ in law, after recentering, and gave a representation of the limit. We give here a shorter proof of this convergence by employing reasoning motivated by Bramson, Ding and Zeitouni. Instead of spine methods and a careful analysis of the renewal measure for killed random walks, our approach employs a modified version of the second moment method that may be of independent interest.
We consider a one-dimensional recurrent random walk in random environment (RWRE) when the environment is i.i.d. with a parametric, finitely supported distribution. Based on a single observation of the path, we provide a maximum likelihood estimation procedure of the parameters of the environment. Unlike most of the classical maximum likelihood approach, the limit of the criterion function is in general a nondegenerate random variable and convergence does not hold in probability. Not only the leading term but also the second order asymptotics is needed to fully identify the unknown parameter. W…
For Sinaï's walk (X_k) we show that the empirical measure of the environment seen from the particle (\bar\w_k) converges in law to some random measure S. This limit measure is explicitly given in terms of the infinite valley, which construction goes back to Golosov. As a consequence an "in law" ergodic theorem holds for additive functionals of (\bar\w_k) . When the limit in this "in law" ergodic theorem is deterministic, it holds in probability. This allows some extensions to the recurrent case of the ballistic "environment's method" dating back to Kozlov and Molchanov. In particular, we show …
We consider non-reversible random walks evolving on a potential field in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We describe the complete metastable behavior of the random walk among the landscape of valleys, and we derive the Eyring-Kramers formula for the mean transition time from a metastable set to a stable set.
Consider a random walk $S_n=\sum_{i=0}^n X_i$ with negative drift. This paper deals with upper bounds for the maximum $M=\max_{n\ge 1}S_n$ of this random walk in different settings of power moment existences. As it is usual for deriving upper bounds, we truncate summands. Therefore we use an approach of splitting the time axis by stopping times into intervals of random but finite length and then choose a level of truncation on each interval. Hereby we can reduce the problem of finding upper bounds for $M$ to the problem of finding upper bounds for $M_τ=\max_{n\le τ}S_n$. In addition we test ou…
Consider a random walk $S=(S_n:n\geq 0)$ that is ``perturbed'' by a stationary sequence $(ξ_n:n\geq 0)$ to produce the process $(S_n+ξ_n:n\geq0)$. This paper is concerned with computing the distribution of the all-time maximum $M_{\infty}=\max \{S_k+ξ_k:k\geq0\}$ of perturbed random walk with a negative drift. Such a maximum arises in several different applications settings, including production systems, communications networks and insurance risk. Our main results describe asymptotics for $\mathbb{P}(M_{\infty}>x)$ as $x\to\infty$. The tail asymptotics depend greatly on whether the $ξ_n$'s are…
We consider random walks indexed by arbitrary finite random or deterministic trees. We derive a simple sufficient criterion which ensures that the maximal displacement of the tree-indexed random walk is determined by a single large jump. This criterion is given in terms of four quantities : the tail and the expectation of the random walk steps, the height of the tree and the number of its vertices. The results are applied to critical Galton--Watson trees with offspring distributions in the domain of attraction of a stable law.
We define the reflection of a random walk at a general barrier and derive, in case the increments are light tailed and have negative mean, a necessary and sufficient criterion for the global maximum of the reflected process to be finite a.s. If it is finite a.s., we show that the tail of the distribution of the global maximum decays exponentially fast and derive the precise rate of decay. Finally, we discuss an example from structural biology that motivated the interest in the reflection at a general barrier.
We consider transient one-dimensional random walks in random environment with zero asymptotic speed. An aging phenomenon involving the generalized Arcsine law is proved using the localization of the walk at the foot of "valleys" of height $\log t$. In the quenched setting, we also sharply estimate the distribution of the walk at time $t$.
We consider a one-dimensional discrete symmetric random walk with a reflecting boundary at the origin. Generating functions are found for the 2- dimensional probability distribution P{Sn = x,max1?j?n Sn = a} of being at position x after n steps, while the maximal location that the walker has achieved during these n steps is a. We also obtain the familiar (marginal) 1-dimensional distribution for Sn = x, but more importantly that for max1?j?n Sj = a asymptotically at fixed a2/n. We are able to compute and compare the expectations and variances of the two one-dimensional distributions, finding t…

Consider a family of $Δ$-latticed aperiodic random walks $\{S^{(a)},0\le a\le a_0\}$ with increments $X_i^{(a)}$ and non-positive drift $-a$. Suppose that $\sup_{a\le a_0}\mathbf{E}[(X^{(a)})^2]<\infty$ and $\sup_{a\le a_0}\mathbf{E}[\max\{0,X^{(a)}\}^{2+\varepsilon}]<\infty$ for some $\varepsilon>0$. Assume that $X^{(a)}\xrightarrow[]{w} X^{(0)}$ as $a\to 0$ and denote by $M^{(a)}=\max_{k\ge 0} S_k^{(a)}$ the maximum of the random walk $S^{(a)}$. In this paper we provide the asymptotics of $\mathbf{P}(M^{(a)}=yΔ)$ as $a\to 0$ in the case, when $y\to \infty$ and $ay=O(1)$. This asymptotics fol…
We prove large deviation results for the position of the rightmost particle, denoted by $M_n$, in a one-dimensional branching random walk in a case when Cramér's condition is not satisfied. More precisely we consider step size distributions with stretched exponential upper and lower tails, i.e.~both tails decay as $e^{-|t|^r}$ for some $r\in( 0,1)$. It is known that in this case, $M_n$ grows as $n^{1/r}$ and in particular faster than linearly in $n$. Our main result is a large deviation principle for the laws of $n^{-1/r}M_n$ . In the proof we use a comparison with the maximum of (a random num…
We consider the maximum process of a random walk with additive independent noise in form of $\max_{i=1,\dots,n}(S_i+Y_i)$. The random walk may have dependent increments, but its sample path is assumed to converge weakly to a fractional Brownian motion. When the largest noise has the same order as the maximal displacement of the random walk, we establish an invariance principle for the maximum process in the Skorohod topology. The limiting process is the maximum process of the fractional Brownian notion with shot noise generated by Poisson point processes.
We study the one-dimensional branching random walk in the case when the step size distribution has a stretched exponential tail, and, in particular, no finite exponential moments. The tail of the step size $X$ decays as $\mathbb{P}[X \geq t] \sim a \exp(-λt^r)$ for some constants $a, λ> 0$ where $r \in (0,1)$. We give a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of the position of the rightmost particle, proving almost-sure limit theorems, convergence in law and some integral tests. The limit theorems reveal interesting differences betweens the two regimes $ r \in (0, 2/3)$ and $ r \in (…
For a continuous-time catalytic branching random walk (CBRW) on Z, with an arbitrary finite number of catalysts, we study the asymptotic behavior of position of the rightmost particle when time tends to infinity. The mild requirements include the regular variation of the jump distribution tail for underlying random walk and the well-known L log L condition for the offspring numbers. In our classification, given in the previous paper, the analysis refers to supercritical CBRW. The principle result demonstrates that, after a proper normalization, the maximum of CBRW converges in distribution to …
Large deviations for maximum local time of simple random walk in dimensions $d\ge 3$

For families of random walks $\{S_k^{(a)}\}$ with $\mathbf E S_k^{(a)} = -ka < 0$ we consider their maxima $M^{(a)} = \sup_{k \ge 0} S_k^{(a)}$. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of $M^{(a)}$ as $a \to 0$ for asymptotically stable random walks. This problem appeared first in the 1960's in the analysis of a single-server queue when the traffic load tends to 1 and since then is referred to as the heavy-traffic approximation problem. Kingman and Prokhorov suggested two different approaches which were later followed by many authors. We give two elementary proofs of our main result, using eac…
We consider a one dimensional sub-ballistic random walk evolving in a parametric i.i.d. random environment. We study the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the parameter based on a single observation of the path till the time it reaches a distant site. In that purpose, we adapt the method developed in the ballistic case by Comets et al (2014) and Falconnet, Loukianova and Matias (2014). Using a supplementary assumption due to the specificity of the sub-ballistic regime, we prove consistency and asymptotic normality as the distant site tends to infinity. To empha…
A complete characterization of the possible joint distributions of the maximum and terminal value of uniformly integrable martingale has been known for some time, and the aim of this paper is to establish a similar characterization for continuous martingales of the joint law of the minimum, final value, and maximum, along with the direction of the final excursion. We solve this problem completely for the discrete analogue, that of a simple symmetric random walk stopped at some almost-surely finite stopping time. This characterization leads to robust hedging strategies for derivatives whose val…
Consider a family of random walks $S_n^{(a)}=X_1^{(a)}+\cdots+X_n^{(a)}$ with negative drift $\mathbf E X_1^{(a)}=-a<0$ and finite variance $\mbox{var}(X_1^{(a)})=σ^2<\infty$.Let $M^{(a)}=\max_{n\ge 0} S_n^{(a)}$ be the maximums of the random walks. The exponential asymptotics $\mathbf P(aM^{(a)}>x)\sim e^{-2x/σ^2}$, as $a\to 0$, were found by Kingman and are known as heavy traffic approximation in the queueing theory. For subexponential random variables the large deviation asymptotics for $\mathbf P(M^{(a)}>x)\sim \frac{1}{a}\overline F^I(x)$ hold for fixed $a$ as $x\to\infty$. In this paper …
Let $R_n=\max_{0\leq j\leq n}S_j-S_n$ be a random walk $S_n$ reflected in its maximum. Except in the trivial case when $P(X\ge0)=1$, $R_n$ will pass over a horizontal boundary of any height in a finite time, with probability 1. We extend this by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for finiteness of passage times of $R_n$ above certain curved (power law) boundaries, as well. The intuition that a degree of heaviness of the negative tail of the distribution of the increments of $S_n$ is necessary for passage of $R_n$ above a high level is correct in most, but not all, cases, as we show. Co…
Given a super-critical branching random walk on $\mathbb R$ started from the origin, let $M_n$ be the maximal position of individuals at the $n$-th generation. Under some mild conditions, it is known from \cite{A13} that as $n\rightarrow\infty$, $M_n-x^*n+\frac{3}{2θ^*}\log n$ converges in law for some suitable constants $x^*$ and $θ^*$. In this work, we investigate its moderate deviation, in other words, the convergence rates of $$\mathbb{P}\left(M_n\leq x^*n-\frac{3}{2θ^*}\log n-\ell_n\right),$$ for any positive sequence $(\ell_n)$ such that $\ell_n=O(n)$ and $\ell_n\uparrow\infty$. As a by-…
In this paper, we penalised the standard random walk by several functions of its maximum. The aim is to show that in spite of very close penalisation functions, under the new probabilities, the canonical process behaves very differently.
Motivated by problems in behavioural finance, we provide two explicit constructions of a randomized stopping time which embeds a given centered distribution $μ$ on integers into a simple symmetric random walk in a uniformly integrable manner. Our first construction has a simple Markovian structure: at each step, we stop if an independent coin with a state-dependent bias returns tails. Our second construction is a discrete analogue of the celebrated Azéma-Yor solution and requires independent coin tosses only when excursions away from maximum breach predefined levels. Further, this construction…
We study the distribution of the maximum $M$ of a random walk whose increments have a distribution with negative mean and belonging, for some $γ>0$, to a subclass of the class $\mathcal{S}_γ$--see, for example, Chover, Ney, and Wainger (1973). For this subclass we give a probabilistic derivation of the asymptotic tail distribution of $M$, and show that extreme values of $M$ are in general attained through some single large increment in the random walk near the beginning of its trajectory. We also give some results concerning the ``spatially local'' asymptotics of the distribution of $M$, the m…
Rotor walk is a deterministic analogue of simple random walk. For any given graph, we construct a rotor configuration for which the escape rate of the corresponding rotor walk is equal to the escape rate of simple random walk, and thus answer a question of Florescu, Ganguly, Levine, and Peres (2014).
In this work, we consider a modification of time \emph{inhomogeneous} branching random walk, where the driving increment distribution changes over time macroscopically. Following Bandyopadhyay and Ghosh (2021), we give certain independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) displacements to all the particles at the last generation. We call this process \emph{last progeny modified time inhomogeneous branching random walk (LPMTI-BRW)}. Under very minimal assumptions on the underlying point processes of the displacements, we show that the maximum displacement converges to a limit after only an a…
We consider point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the largest extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel or the Fréchet distributions. The proofs heavily depend on precise large deviation results for sums of independent random variables with a finite moment generating function or with a subexponential distribution.
Consider a symmetric aperiodic random walk in $Z^d$, $d\geq 3$. There are points (called heavy points) where the number of visits by the random walk is close to its maximum. We investigate the local times around these heavy points and show that they converge to a deterministic limit as the number of steps tends to infinity.
We revisit the statistics of extremes and records of symmetric random walks with stochastic resetting, extending earlier studies in several directions. We put forward a diffusive scaling regime (symmetric step length distribution with finite variance, weak resetting probability) where the maximum of the walk and the number of its records up to discrete time $n$ become asymptotically proportional to each other for single typical trajectories. Their distributions obey scaling laws ruled by a common two-parameter scaling function, interpolating between a half-Gaussian and a Gumbel law. The exact …
We present the first algorithm that samples $\max_{n\geq0}\{S_{n}-n^α\},$ where $S_n$ is a mean zero random walk, and $n^α$ with $α\in(1/2,1)$ defines a nonliner boundary. We show that our algorithm has finite expected running time. We also apply the algorithm to construct the first exact simulation method for the steady-state departure process of a $GI/GI/\infty$ queue where the service time distribution has infinite mean.
We consider the thick points of random walk, i.e. points where the local time is a fraction of the maximum. In two dimensions, we answer a question of Dembo, Peres, Rosen and Zeitouni and compute the number of thick points of planar random walk, assuming that the increments are symmetric and have a finite moment of order two. The proof provides a streamlined argument based on the connection to the Gaussian free field and works in a very general setting including isoradial graphs. In higher dimensions, we study the scaling limit of the thick points. In particular, we show that the rescaled numb…
We consider statistical models driven by Gaussian and non-Gaussian self-similar processes with long memory and we construct maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) for the drift parameter. Our approach is based on the approximation by random walks of the driving noise. We study the asymptotic behavior of the estimators and we give some numerical simulations to illustrate our results.
Consider a random walk $(S_n:n\geq0)$ with drift $-μ$ and $S_0=0$. Assuming that the increments have exponential moments, negative mean, and are strongly nonlattice, we provide a complete asymptotic expansion (in powers of $μ>0$) that corrects the diffusion approximation of the all time maximum $M=\max_{n\geq0}S_n$. Our results extend both the first-order correction of Siegmund [Adv. in Appl. Probab. 11 (1979) 701--719] and the full asymptotic expansion provided in the Gaussian case by Chang and Peres [Ann. Probab. 25 (1997) 787--802]. We also show that the Cramér--Lundberg constant (as a func…
We show the minimum spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian over all simple, connected graphs on $n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\tfrac{54}{n^3}$. This minimum is achieved asymptotically by a double kite graph. Consequently, this leads to sharp upper bounds for the maximum relaxation time of a random walk, settling a conjecture of Aldous and Fill. We also improve an eigenvalue-diameter inequality by giving a new lower bound for the spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian. This eigenvalue lower bound is asymptotically best possible.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for balanced random walks in time dependent ergodic random environments which is not necessarily nearest-neigbhor. We assume that the environment satisfies appropriate ergodicity and ellipticity conditions. The proof is based on the use of a maximum principle for parabolic difference operators.
We consider branching random walk in random environment (BRWRE) and prove the existence of deterministic subsequences along which their maximum, centered at its mean, is tight. This partially answers an open question in arXiv:1711.00852. The method of proof adapts an argument developed by Dekking and Host for branching random walks with bounded increments. The question of tightness without the need for subsequences remains open.
