Let f be a nondegenerate quadratic form in at least 5 variables over a number field K and let S be a finite set of valuations of K containing all Archimedean ones. We prove that if the Witt index of f is at least 2 or it is 1 and S contains a non-Archimedean valuation, then the S-arithmetic subgroups of the special orthogonal group of f have bounded generation. These groups provide a series of examples of boundedly generated S-arithmetic groups in isotropic, but not quasi-split, algebraic groups.
In this note we compute the fundamental domain of the action on the corresponding Bruhat-Tits tree of the arithmetic subgroup of PGL2 with respect to an arbitrary place of the rational function field.
The main goal of this paper is to apply the arithmetic method developed in our previous paper \cite{13} to determine the number of some types of subgroups of finite abelian groups.
Let $G$ be a semisimple real algebraic Lie group of real rank at least two and $U$ be the unipotent radical of a non-trivial parabolic subgroup. We prove that a discrete Zariski dense subgroup of $G$ that contains an irreducible lattice of $U$ is an arithmetic lattice of $G$. This solves a conjecture of Margulis and extends previous work of Hee Oh.
We develop practical techniques to compute with arithmetic groups $H\leq \mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Q})$ for $n>2$. Our approach relies on constructing a principal congruence subgroup in $H$. Problems solved include testing membership in $H$, analyzing the subnormal structure of $H$, and the orbit-stabilizer problem for $H$. Effective computation with subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{Z}_m)$ is vital to this work. All algorithms have been implemented in GAP.
Let F be a local field of positive characteristic, and let G be either a Heisenberg group over F, or a certain (nonabelian) two-dimensional unipotent group over F. If H is an arithmetic subgroup of G, we provide an explicit description of every automorphism of H. From this description, it follows that every automorphism of H virtually extends to a virtual automorphism of G.
Let A = Z[c], where c is an irrational number whose square is rational, or let A = Z[1/r], where r > 1 is a square-free natural number. We show that no finite-index subgroup of SL(2,A) is left orderable. (Equivalently, these subgroups have no nontrivial orientation-preserving actions on the real line.) This implies that if G is an isotropic F-simple algebraic group over an algebraic number field F, then no nonarchimedean S-arithmetic subgroup of G is left orderable. Our proofs are based on the fact, proved by B.Liehl, that every element of SL(2,A) is a product of a bounded number of elementary…
By classifying $S$-maximal amenable subgroups of algebraic groups over a global field of characteristic zero, we obtain a complete classification of maximal amenable subgroups up to commensurability in the respective arithmetic groups. Futhermore, we prove that these commensurably maximal amenable subgroups are singular and therefore give rise to maximal amenable von Neumann subalgebras.
We study the growth rate of the number of maximal arithmetic subgroups of bounded covolumes in a semi-simple Lie group using an extension of the method due to Borel and Prasad.
We correct a mistake in the paper "On the cuspidal cohomology of $S$-arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups over number fields " by A. Borel, J.-P. Labesse, J. Schwermer that appeared in Compositio Mathematica, 102 (1996), 1-40.
In this paper we will give various examples of exponentially distorted subgroups in linear groups, including some new example of subgroups of $SL_n(\mathbb{Z}[x])$ for $n \ge 3$, and show how they can be used to construct symmetric-key cryptographic platforms.
Let G be a unipotent algebraic subgroup of some GL_m(C) defined over Q. We describe an algorithm for finding a finite set of generators of the subgroup G(Z) = G \cap GL_m(Z). This is based on a new proof of the result (in more general form due to Borel and Harish-Chandra) that such a finite generating set exists.
A square complex is a 2-complex formed by gluing squares together. This article is concerned with the fundamental group $Γ$ of certain square complexes of nonpositive curvature, related to quaternion algebras. The abelian subgroup structure of $Γ$ is studied in some detail.
The Hawkes graph $Γ_H(G)$ of $G$ is the directed graph whose vertex set coincides with $π(G)$ and it has the edge $(p, q)$ whenever $q\inπ(G/O_{p',p}(G))$. The Sylow graph $Γ_s(G)$ of $G$ is the directed graph with vertex set $π(G)$ and $(p, q)$ is an edge of $Γ_s(G)$ whenever $q \inπ(N_G(P)/PC_G(P))$ for some Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $G$. The $N$-critical graph $Γ_{Nc}(G)$ of a group $G$ the directed graph whose vertex set coincides with $π(G)$ such that $(p, q)$ is an edge of $Γ_{Nc}(G)$ whenever $G$ contains a Schmidt $(p, q)$-subgroup, i.e. a Schmidt $\{p, q\}$-subgroup with a normal Sylo…
Let $Γ$ be an arithmetic subgroup of $SU(d,1)$ with cusps, and let $X_Γ$ be the associated locally symmetric space. We prove that if the first inner cohomology group $H^1_!(X_Γ,\mathbb{C})$ is non-zero then the pre-image of $Γ$ in each connected cover of $SU(d,1)$ is residually finite. We also give an example of a such a group $Γ$ for which $H^1_!(X_Γ,\mathbb{C})$ is non-zero.
Let G and G' be absolutely almost simple algebraic groups of types B and C respectively, of rank at least 3, and defined over a number field K. We determine when G and G' have the same isomorphism or isogeny classes of maximal K-tori. This leads to the necessary and sufficient conditions for two Zariski-dense S-arithmetic subgroups of G and G' to be weakly commensurable.
We initiate a new, computational approach to a classical problem: certifying non-freeness of ($2$-generator, parabolic) Möbius subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Q})$. The main tools used are algorithms for Zariski dense groups and algorithms to compute a presentation of $\mathrm{SL}(2, R)$ for a localization $R= \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{b}]$ of $\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that a Möbius subgroup $G$ is not free by showing that it has finite index in the relevant $\mathrm{SL}(2, R)$. Further information about the structure of $G$ is obtained; for example, we compute the minimal subgroup of finite index …
Let G be an isotropic reductive algebraic group over a commutative ring R. Assume that the elementary subgroup E(R) of group of points G(R) is correctly defined. Then E(R) is perfect, except for the well-known cases of a split reductive group of type C_2 or G_2.
While lattices in semi-simple Lie groups are studied very well, only little is known about discrete subgroups of infinite covolume. The main class of examples are Schottky groups. Here we investigate some new examples. We consider subgroups $Γ$ of arithmetic groups in $PSL(2,C)^q \times PSL(2,R)^r$ with $q+r>1$ and their limit set. We prove that the projective limit set of a nonelementary finitely generated $Γ$ consists of exactly one point if and only if one and hence all projections of $Γ$ to the simple factors of $PSL(2,C)^q \times PSL(2,R)^r$ are subgroups of arithmetic Fuchsian or Kleinia…
We address two questions of Simon Thomas. First, we show that for any n>2 one can find a four generated free subgroup of SLn(Z) which is profinitely dense. More generally, we show that an arithmetic group Γwhich admits the congruence subgroup property, has a profinitely dense free subgroup with an explicit bound of its rank. Next, we show that the set of profinitely dense, locally free subgroups of such an arithmetic group Γis uncountable.
For $0<α\le 1$, we say that a sequence $(X_k)_{k>0}$ of $d$-regular graphs has property $D_α$ if there exists a constant $C>0$ such that $\mathrm{diam}(X_k)\ge C\cdot|X_k|^α$. We investigate property $D_α$ for arithmetic box spaces of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups $BS(1,m)$ (with $m\geq 2$): those are box spaces obtained by embedding $BS(1,m)$ into the upper triangular matrices in $GL_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/m])$ and intersecting with a family $M_{N_k}$ of congruence subgroups of $GL_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/m])$, where the levels $N_k$ are coprime with $m$ and $N_k|N_{k+1}$. We prove: - if an arithmetic …
Given a Chevalley group $\mathcal{G}$ of classical type and a Borel subgroup $\mathcal{B} \subseteq \mathcal{G}$, we compute the $Σ$-invariants of the $S$-arithmetic groups $\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{Z}[1/N])$, where $N$ is a product of large enough primes. To this end, we let $\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{Z}[1/N])$ act on a Euclidean building $X$ that is given by the product of Bruhat--Tits buildings $X_p$ associated to $\mathcal{G}$, where $p$ runs over the primes dividing $N$. In the course of the proof we introduce necessary and sufficient conditions for convex functions on $\mbox{CAT(0)}$-spaces to be c…
We discuss the following conjecture of Kitaoka: if a finite subgroup $G$ of $GL_{n}(O_{K})$ is invariant under the action of $Gal(K/\Bbb Q)$ then it is contained in $GL_{n}(K^{ab})$. Here $O_{K}$ is the ring of integers in a finite, Galois extension $K$ of $\Bbb Q$ and $K^{ab}$ is the maximal, abelian subextension of $K$. Our main result reduces this conjecture to a special case of elementary abelian $p-$groups $G$. Also, we construct some new examples which negatively answer a question of Kitaoka.
Let R be a connected noetherian commutative ring, and let G be a simply connected reductive group over R of isotropic rank ge 2. The elementary subgroup E(R) of G(R) is the subgroup generated by the R-points U_P^+(R) and U_P^-(R) of the unipotent radicals of two opposite parabolic subgroups P^+ and P^- of G. Assume that 2 is invertible in R if G is of type B_n,C_n,F_4,G_2 and 3 is invertible in R if G is of type G_2. We prove that the congruence kernel of E(R), defined as the kernel of the natural homomorphism between the profinite completion of E(R) and the congruence completion of E(R) with …
In this paper, we describe the structure of finite groups whose element orders or proper (abelian) subgroup orders form an arithmetic progression of ratio $r\geq 2$. This extends the case $r=1$ studied in previous papers \cite{1,8,4}.
The goal of this paper is to construct and describe certain arithmetic subgroups of the automorphism group of a partially commutative group. More precisely, given an arbitrary finite graph $Γ$ we construct an arithmetic subgroup $St(L(G))$, represented as a subgroup of $GL(n,Z)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the graph $Γ$. In the last section of the paper we give a description of the decomposition of the group of automorphisms $St^{conj}(L(G))$ as a semidirect product of the group of conjugating automorphisms $Conj(G)$ and $St(L(G))$. This result is closely related to Theorem 1.4 of …
We prove that any non-cocompact irreducible lattice in a higher rank semi-simple Lie group contains a subgroup of finite index, which has three generators.
Based on a result of Singh--Venkataramana, Bajpai--Dona--Singh--Singh gave a criterion for a discrete Zariski-dense subgroup of Sp(2n,Z) to be a lattice. We adapt this criterion so that it can be used in some situations that were previously excluded. We apply the adapted method to subgroups of Sp(6,Z) and Sp(4,Z) that arise as the monodromy groups of hypergeometric differential equations. In particular, we show that out of the 40 maximally unipotent Sp(6) hypergeometric groups more than half are arithmetic, answering a question of Katz in the negative.
It was conjectured in [KLS14] that for arithmetic groups, Invariable Generation is equivalent to the Congruence Subgroup Property. In view of the famous Serre conjecture this would imply that higher rank arithmetic groups are invariably generated. In this paper we prove that some higher rank arithmetic groups are not invariably generated.
We show that for a typical high rank arithmetic lattice $Γ$, there exist finite index subgroups $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$ such that $Γ_{1} \not\simeq Γ_{2}$ while $\widehat{Γ_{1}} \simeq \widehat{Γ_{2}}$. But there are exceptions to that rule.
The normal Farb growth of a group quantifies how well-approximated the group is by its finite quotients. We show that any S-arithmetic subgroup of a higher rank Chevalley group G has normal Farb growth n^dim(G).
Let $K$ be the function field of a curve $C$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of either odd or zero characteristic. Following the work by Serre and Mason on $\mathrm{SL}_2$, we study the action of arithmetic subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ on its corresponding Bruhat-Tits tree associated to a suitable completion of $K$. More precisely, we prove that the quotient graph "looks like a spider", in the sense that it is the union of a set of cuspidal rays (the "legs"), parametrized by an explicit Picard group, that are attached to a connected graph (the "body"). We use this description in order to describe t…
Let G be a subgroup of GL(V), where V is a finite dimensional vector space over a finite field of characteristic p >0. If det(g-1) = 0 for all g \in G then we call G a fixed-point subgroup of GL(V). Motivated in parallel by questions in arithmetic and linear group theory, we classify all irreducible fixed-point subgroups of Sp_8(2) and give new infinite series of irreducible fixed-point subgroups of symplectic groups Sp_m(2) for various m arising from certain representations of groups of Lie type.
We show that arithmetic subgroups of semisimple groups of relative Q-type A_n, B_n, C_n, D_n, E_6, or E_7 have an exponential lower bound to their isoperimetric inequality in the dimension that is 1 less than the real rank of the semisimple group.
Let G be an isotropic reductive algebraic group over a commutative ring R. Assume that, for any maximal ideal M of R, the rank of the relative root system of G_{R_M} is greater or equal than 2. We show that under this assumption the centralizer of E(R) in G(R) coincides with the abstract group-theoretic center of G(R) and with Cent(G)(R). This generalizes a result of E. Abe and J. Hurley.
We show that the abstract commensurator of an S-arithmetic subgroup of a solvable algebraic group over Q is isomorphic to the Q-points of an algebraic group, and compare this with examples of nonlinear abstract commensurators of S-arithmetic groups in positive characteristic. In particular, we include a description of the abstract commensurator of the lamplighter group.
Let G be a noncocompact irreducible arithmetic group over a global function field K of characteristic p, and let H be a finite-index, residually p-finite subgroup of G. We show that the cohomology of H in the dimension of its associated Euclidean building with coefficients in the field of p elements is infinite.
We develop a practical algorithm to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup of a solvable algebraic group $G$ is arithmetic. This incorporates a procedure to compute a generating set of an arithmetic subgroup of $G$. We also provide a simple new algorithm for integrality testing of finitely generated solvable-by-finite linear groups over the rational field. The algorithms have been implemented in {\sc Magma}.
In this article we introduce and study a class of finite groups for which the orders of normal subgroups satisfy a certain inequality. It is closely connected to some well-known arithmetic classes of natural numbers.
We introduce new methods from p-adic integration into the study of representation zeta functions associated to compact p-adic analytic groups and arithmetic groups. They allow us to establish that the representation zeta functions of generic members of families of p-adic analytic pro-p groups obtained from a global, `perfect' Lie lattice satisfy functional equations. In the case of `semisimple' compact p-adic analytic groups, we exhibit a link between the relevant p-adic integrals and a natural filtration of the locus of irregular elements in the associated semisimple Lie algebra, defined by c…
We begin with a review of the structure of simple, simply-connected complex Lie groups and their Lie algebras, describe the Chevalley lattice and the associated split group over the integers. This gives us a hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of the p-adic Lie group and we describe the other maximal parahoric subgroups and their Lie algebras starting from the hyperspecial one. We then consider the Killing form on the Chevalley lattice and show that it is divisible by 2 times the dual Coxeter number. The same holds for the Lie algebras of the other maximal parahorics. We compute the discrimi…
We develop a general method for computing the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups G of GL_m(O_K) where O_K is the ring of integers in a number field K. With this method we find, that for large, explicitly computed dimensions m, the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups of GL_m(O_K) vanishes. For other cases, some of them very important for spaces of multiple polylogarithms, we compute non-zero homological Euler characteristic. With the same method we find all the torsion elements in GL_3(Z) up to conjugation. Finally, our method allows us to obtain a…
