Let G be a subgroup of GL(V), where V is a finite dimensional vector space over a finite field of characteristic p >0. If det(g-1) = 0 for all g \in G then we call G a
fixed-point subgroup of GL(V). Motivated in parallel by questions in arithmetic and linear group theory, we classify all irreducible fixed-point subgroups of Sp_8(2) and give new infinite series of irreducible fixed-point subgroups of symplectic groups Sp_m(2) for various m arising from certain representations of groups of Lie type.
Motivated by the search of a concept of linearity in the theory of arithmetic differential equations we introduce here an arithmetic analogue of Lie algebras and a concept of skew arithmetic differential cocycles. We will then construct such skew cocycles, based on certain remarkable lifts of Frobenius for the classical groups $GL_n, SL_n, SO_n, Sp_{n}$. The theory for $GL_n$, especially on the Galois side, will be further developed in a sequel to this paper.
We begin with a review of the structure of simple, simply-connected complex Lie groups and their Lie algebras, describe the Chevalley lattice and the associated split group over the integers. This gives us a hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of the p-adic Lie group and we describe the other maximal parahoric subgroups and their Lie algebras starting from the hyperspecial one. We then consider the Killing form on the Chevalley lattice and show that it is divisible by 2 times the dual Coxeter number. The same holds for the Lie algebras of the other maximal parahorics. We compute the discrimi…
We study the growth rate of the number of maximal arithmetic subgroups of bounded covolumes in a semi-simple Lie group using an extension of the method due to Borel and Prasad.
This paper is devoted to deformation theory of graded Lie algebras over $\Z$ or $\Z_l$ with finite dimensional graded pieces. Such deformation problems naturally appear in number theory. In the first part of the paper, we use Schlessinger criteria for functors on Artin local rings in order to obtain universal deformation rings for deformations of graded Lie algebras and their graded representations. In the second part, we use a version of Schlessinger criteria for functors on the Artinian category of nilpotent Lie algebras which is formulated by Pridham, and explore arithmetic deformations usi…
We generalize a result of Sury and prove that uniform discreteness of cocompact lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups (first conjectured by Margulis) is equivalent to a weak form of Lehmer's conjecture. We include a short survey of related results and conjectures.
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group, $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G:=H(\mathbb{R})$, and $Γ\subset H(\mathbb{Q})$ a congruence arithmetic subgroup. In this paper, we generalize existing subconvex bounds for Hecke-Maass forms on the locally symmetric space $Γ\backslash G/K$ to corresponding bounds on the arithmetic quotient $Γ\backslash G$ for cocompact lattices using the spectral function of an elliptic operator. The bounds obtained extend known subconvex bounds for automorphic forms to non-trivial $K$-types, yielding subconvex bounds for new classes of automorphic representations, a…
We prove that cocompact arithmetic lattices in a simple Lie group are uniformly discrete if and only if the Salem numbers are uniformly bounded away from $1$. We also prove an analogous result for semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we shed some light on the structure of the bottom of the length spectrum of an arithmetic orbifold $Γ\backslash X$ by showing the existence of a positive constant $δ(X)>0$ such that squares of lengths of closed geodesics shorter than $δ$ must be pairwise linearly dependent over $\mathbb Q$.
The theory of differential equations has an arithmetic analogue in which derivatives are replaced by Fermat quotients. One can then ask what is the arithmetic analogue of a linear differential equation. The study of usual linear differential equations is the same as the study of the differential cocycle from $GL_n$ into its Lie algebra given by the logarithmic derivative. However we prove here that there are no such cocycles in the context of arithmetic differential equations. In sequels of this paper we will remedy the situation by introducing arithmetic analogues of Lie algebras and a skew v…
We propose in this paper an approach to Breuil's conjecture on a Langlands correspondence between $p$-adic Galois representations and representations of $p$-adic Lie groups in $p$-adic topological vector spaces. We suggest that Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $D$-modules should give a $p$-adic analogue of Kashiwara's theory of $D$-modules for real Lie groups i.e. it should give a realization of the $p$-adic representations of a $p$-adic Lie group as spaces of overconvergent solutions of arithmetic $D$-modules which will come equipped with an action of the Galois group. We shall discuss the ca…
Let a be an integer and q a prime number. In this paper, we find an asymptotic formula for the number of positive integers n < x with the property that no divisor d > 1 of n lies in the arithmetic progression a modulo q.
We consider weighted averages of the number of representations of an even integer as a sum of two prime numbers, where each summand lies in a given arithmetic progression modulo a common integer $q$. Our result is uniform in a suitable range for $q$.
In this paper we show that totally geodesic subspaces determine the commensurability class of a standard arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-orbifold, $n\ge 4$. Many of the results are more general and apply to locally symmetric spaces associated to arithmetic lattices in $\mathbb{R}$-simple Lie groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. We use a combination of techniques from algebraic groups and quadratic forms to prove several results about these spaces.
By Grothendieck's anabelian conjectures, Galois representations landing in outer automorphism group of the algebraic fundamental group which are associated to hyperbolic smooth curves defined over number-fields encode all the arithmetic information of these curves. The Goal of this paper is to develop an arithmetic Teichmuller theory, by which we mean, introducing arithmetic objects summarizing the arithmetic information coming from all curves of the same topological type defined over number-fields. We also introduce Hecke-Teichmuller Lie algebra which plays the role of Hecke algebra in the an…
We investigate the question of which growth rates are possible for the number of periodic points of a compact group automorphism. Our arguments involve a modification of Linnik's Theorem, concerning small prime numbers in arithmetic progressions which lie in intervals.
A reasonably complete theory of the approximation of an irrational by rational fractions whose numerators and denominators lie in prescribed arithmetic progressions is developed in this paper. Results are both, on the one hand, from a metrical and a non-metrical point of view and, on the other hand, from an asymptotic and also a uniform point of view. The principal novelty is a Khintchine type theorem for uniform approximation in this context. Some applications of this theory are also discussed.
This book provides a gentle introduction to the study of arithmetic subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. This means that the goal is to understand the group SL(n,Z) and certain of its subgroups. Among the major results discussed in the later chapters are the Mostow Rigidity Theorem, the Margulis Superrigidity Theorem, Ratner's Theorems, and the classification of arithmetic subgroups of classical groups. As background for the proofs of these theorems, the book provides primers on lattice subgroups, arithmetic groups, real rank and Q-rank, ergodic theory, unitary representations, amenability, Kaz…
We give estimates on the number $AL_H(x)$ of arithmetic lattices $Γ$ of covolume at most $x$ in a simple Lie group $H$. In particular, we obtain a first concrete estimate on the number of arithmetic 3-manifolds of volume at most $x$. Our main result is for the classical case $H=PSL(2,R)$ where we compute the limit of $\log AL_H(x) / x\log x$ when $x\to\infty$. The proofs use several different techniques: geometric (bounding the number of generators of $Γ$ as a function of its covolume), number theoretic (bounding the number of maximal such $Γ$) and sharp estimates on the character values of th…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Associated to a pair $(E, \mathcal{F}_\infty)$ consisting of a rational elliptic curve $E$ and a $p$-adic Lie extension $\mathcal{F}_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, is the $p$-primary Selmer group $Sel_{p^\infty}(E/\mathcal{F}_\infty)$ of $E$ over $\mathcal{F}_\infty$. In this paper, we study the arithmetic statistics for the algebraic structure of this Selmer group. The results provide insights into the asymptotics for the growth of Mordell--Weil ranks of elliptic curves in noncommutative towers.
Given a smooth plane quartic curve C over a field k of characteristic 0, with Jacobian variety J, and a marked rational point P of C(k), we construct a reductive group G and a G-variety X, together with an injection J(k)/2J(k) -> G(k)\X(k). We do this using the Mumford theta group of J, and a construction of Lurie which passes from Heisenberg groups to Lie algebras.
The study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties originally arose from arithmetic geometry, but many problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are purely Lie-theoretic in nature. This survey deals with recent progress on several important problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The emphasis is on the Lie-theoretic aspect, while some connections and applications to arithmetic geometry will also be mentioned.
- Let p be a prime number and K an algebraic number field. What is the arithmetic structure of Galois extensions L/K having p-adic analytic Galois group $Γ$ = Gal(L/K)? The celebrated Tame Fontaine-Mazur conjecture predicts that such extensions are either deeply ramified (at some prime dividing p) or ramified at an infinite number of primes. In this work, we take up a study (initiated by Boston) of this type of question under the assumption that L is Galois over some subfield k of K such that [K : k] is a prime = p. Letting $σ$ be a generator of Gal(K/k), we study the constraints posed on the …
In the present paper, we will show that three apparently disjoint objects: Galois representations arising from twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface (number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry), Picard modular forms (automorphic forms), rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds and their arithmetic (Diophantine geometry) are intimately related to Hessian polyhedra and their invariants. We construct a Galois representation whose image is a proper subgroup of $W(E_6)$, the Weyl group of the exceptional Lie algebra $E_6$. We give a conjecture about the identification of two different kinds of $L$-function…
Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive group, and let $V$ be a linear representation of $G$. Let $V//G = Spec(Sym(V^*))^G$ denote the geometric quotient and let $π: V \to V//G$ denote the quotient map. Arithmetic invariant theory studies the map $π$ on the level of $k$-rational points. In this article, which is a continuation of the results of our earlier paper "Arithmetic invariant theory", we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a rational element of $V//G$ to lie in the image of $π$, assuming that generic stabilizers are abelian. We illustrate the various scenarios that can o…
We study arithmetic progression in the $x$-coordinate of rational points on genus two curves. As we know, there are two models for the curve $C$ of genus two: $C: y^2=f_{5}(x)$ or $C: y^2=f_{6}(x)$, where $f_{5}, f_{6}\in\Q[x]$, $\operatorname{deg}f_{5}=5, \operatorname{deg}f_{6}=6$ and the polynomials $f_{5}, f_{6}$ do not have multiple roots. First we prove that there exists an infinite family of curves of the form $y^2=f(x)$, where $f\in\Q[x]$ and $\operatorname{deg}f=5$ each containing 11 points in arithmetic progression. We also present an example of $F\in\Q[x]$ with $\operatorname{deg}F=…
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
The purpose of this article is to present a survey of our recent results on length commensurable and isospectral locally symmetric spaces. The geometric questions led us to the notion of "weak commensurability" of two Zariski-dense subgroups in a semi-simple Lie group. We have shown that for arithmetic subgroups, weak commensurability has surprisingly strong consequences. Our proofs make use of p-adic techniques and results from algebraic and transcendental number theory.
We discuss rather systematically the principle, implicit in earlier works, that for a "random" element in an arithmetic subgroup of a (split, say) reductive algebraic group over a number field, the splitting field of the characteristic polynomial, computed using any faitfhful representation, has Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of the underlying algebraic group. Besides tools such as the large sieve, which we had already used, we introduce some probabilistic ideas (large deviation estimates for finite Markov chains) and the general case involves a more precise understanding of the way…
Let G be a semisimple Lie group with associated symmetric space D, and let Gamma subset G be a cocompact arithmetic group. Let L be a lattice inside a Z Gamma-module arising from a rational finite-dimensional complex representation of G. Bergeron and Venkatesh recently gave a precise conjecture about the growth of the order of the torsion subgroup H_i (Gamma_k; L )_tors as Gamma_k ranges over a tower of congruence subgroups of Gamma. In particular they conjectured that the ratio (log |H_i (Gamma_k ; L)_tors|)/[Gamma : Gamma_k] should tend to a nonzero limit if and only if i= (dim(D)-1)/2 and G…
We consider a family of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ arising as Prym varieties of double covers of genus-$1$ curves by genus-$3$ curves. These abelian surfaces carry a polarization of type $(1,2)$ and we show that the average size of the Selmer group of this polarization equals $3$. Moreover we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of the abelian surfaces in the same family is bounded above by $5$. This implies an upper bound on the average rank of these Prym varieties, and gives evidence for the heuristics of Poonen and Rains for a family of abelian varieties which are not …
This paper is lead by the question whether there is a nice structure theory of finitely generated modules over the Iwasawa algebra, i.e. the completed group algebra, R of a p-adic analytic group G. For G without any p-torsion element we prove that R is an Auslander regular ring. This result enables us to give a good definition for pseudo-null R-modules. Then the category of R-modules up to pseudo-isomorphisms is studied and we obtain a weak structure theorem for the p-primary part of a finitely generated R-module. A local duality theorem as well as the Auslander-Buchsbaum equality are further …
This paper is devoted to deformation theory of "anabelian" representations of the absolute Galois group landing in outer automorphism group of the algebraic fundamental group of a hyperbolic smooth curve defined over a number-field. In the first part of this paper, we obtained universal deformations for Lie-algebra versions of the above representation using the Schlessinger criteria for functors on Artin local rings. In the second part, we use a version of Schlessinger criteria for functors on the Artinian category of nilpotent Lie algebras which is formulated by Pridham, and explore arithmeti…
A classical twisting lemma says that given a finitely generated torsion module $M$ over the Iwasawa algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[Γ]]$ with $Γ\cong \mathbb{Z}_p, \ \exists$ a continuous character $θ: Γ\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_p^\times$ such that, the $ Γ^{n}$-Euler characteristic of the twist $M(θ)$ is finite for every $n$. This twisting lemma has been generalized for the Iwasawa algebra of a general compact $p$-adic Lie group $G$. In this article, we consider a further generalization of the twisting lemma to $\mathcal{T}[[G]]$ modules, where $G$ is a compact $p$-adic Lie group and $\mathcal{T}$ is a f…
To a hyperbolic smooth curve defined over a number-field one naturally associates an "anabelian" representation of the absolute Galois group of the base field landing in outer automorphism group of the algebraic fundamental group. In this paper, we introduce several deformation problems for Lie-algebra versions of the above representation and show that, this way we get a richer structure than those coming from deformations of "abelian" Galois representations induced by the Tate module of associated Jacobian variety. We develop an arithmetic deformation theory of graded Lie algebras with finite…
Let $f_c(z) = z^2+c$ for $c \in \mathbb{C}$. We show there exists a uniform bound on the number of points in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$ that can be preperiodic for both $f_{c_1}$ and $f_{c_2}$ with $c_1\not= c_2$ in $\mathbb{C}$. The proof combines arithmetic ingredients with complex-analytic; we estimate an adelic energy pairing when the parameters lie in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$, building on the quantitative arithmetic equidistribution theorem of Favre and Rivera-Letelier, and we use distortion theorems in complex analysis to control the size of the intersection of distinct Julia sets. The proof i…
In this article we prove that the co-compactness of the arithmetic lattices in a connected semisimple real Lie group is preserved if the lattices under consideration are representation equivalent. This is in the spirit of the question posed by Gopal Prasad and A. S. Rapinchuk where instead of representation equivalence, the lattices under consideration are weakly commensurable Zariski dense subgroups.
