For hypersurfaces of dimension greater than one, Huisken showed that compact self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow with positive scalar mean curvature are spheres. We will prove the following extension: A compact self-similar solution in arbitrary codimension and of dimension greater than one is spherical, i.e. contained in a sphere, if and only if the mean curvature vector \be H\ee is non-vanishing and the principal normal \beν\ee is parallel in the normal bundle. We also give a classification of complete noncompact self-shrinkers of that type.
In this paper, we prove a classification theorem for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow with $|A|^2\le 1$ in arbitrary codimension. In particular, this implies a gap theorem for self-shrinkers in arbitrary codimension.
In this paper, we generalize Colding and Minicozzi's work \cite{CM} on the stability of self-shrinkers in the hypersurface case to higher co-dimensional cases. The first and second variation formulae of the $F$-functional are derived and an equivalent condition to the stability in general codimension is found. Moreover, we show that the closed Lagrangian self-shrinkers given by Anciaux in \cite{An} are unstable.
In this paper, we first use the method of Colding and Minicozzi [5] to show that K. Smoczyk's classification theorem [16] for complete self-shrinkers in higher codimension also holds under a weaker condition. Then as an application, we give some rigidity results for self-shrinkers in arbitrary codimension.
We show that the product of two round shrinking spheres is an isolated self-shrinker in any codimension, modulo rotations. Moreover we prove explicit Łojasiewicz inequalities near such products. Łojasiewicz inequalities were previously used by Schulze to prove uniqueness of tangent mean curvature flows at compact shrinkers; our results provide an explicit rate of convergence to products of two spheres.
We show that recent work of Ni and Wilking yields the result that a noncompact nonflat Ricci shrinker has at most quadratic scalar curvature decay. The examples of noncompact Kähler--Ricci shrinkers by Feldman, Ilmanen, and Knopf exhibit that this result is sharp.
We introduce a notion of index for shrinkers of the mean curvature flow. We then prove a gap theorem for the index of rotationally symmetric immersed shrinkers in R^3, namely, that such shrinkers have index at least 3, unless they are one of the stable ones: the sphere, the cylinder, or the plane. We also provide a generalization of the result to higher dimensions.
We show that for a complete Ricci shrinker there exists a sequence of points tending to infinity whose norms of the Ricci tensor grow at most linearly.
We investigate Mean Curvature Flow self-shrinking hypersurfaces with polynomial growth. It is known that such self shrinkers are unstable. We focus mostly on self-shrinkers of the form $\mathbb S^k\times\R^{n-k}\subset \R^{n+1}$. We use a connection between the stability operator and the quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian to find all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the stability operator on these self-shrinkers. We also show self-shrinkers of this form have lower index than all other complete self-shrinking hypersurfaces. In particular, they have finite index. This implies that the ends…
Self-shrinkers are hypersurfaces that shrink homothetically under mean curvature flow; these solitons model the singularities of the flow. It it presently known that an entire self-shrinking graph must be a hyperplane. In this paper we show that the hyperplane is rigid in an even stronger sense, namely: For $2 \leq n \leq 6$, any smooth, complete self-shrinker $Σ^n\subset\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ that is graphical inside a large, but compact, set must be a hyperplane. In fact, this rigidity holds within a larger class of almost stable self-shrinkers. A key component of this paper is the procurement of…
Self-shrinkers model singularities of the mean curvature flow; they are defined as the special solutions that contract homothetically under the flow. Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi showed that cylindrical self-shrinkers are rigid in a strong sense - that is, any self-shrinker that is mean convex with uniformly bounded curvature on a large, but compact, set must be a round cylinder. Using this result, Colding and Minicozzi were able to establish uniqueness of blowups at cylindrical singularities, and provide a detailed description of the singular set of generic mean curvature flows. In this paper, w…
It is our purpose to study complete self-shrinkers in Euclidean space. By introducing a generalized maximum principle for $\mathcal{L}$-operator, we give estimates on supremum and infimum of the squared norm of the second fundamental form of self-shrinkers without assumption on \emph{polynomial volume growth}, which is assumed in Cao and Li. Thus, we can obtain the rigidity theorems on complete self-shrinkers without assumption on \emph{polynomial volume growth}. For complete proper self-shrinkers of dimension 2 and 3, we give a classification of them under assumption of constant squared norm …
In this paper we prove classification results for gradient shrinking Ricci solitons under two invariant conditions, namely nonnegative orthogonal bisectional curvature and weakly PIC1, without any curvature bound. New results on ancient solutions for the Ricci and Kähler-Ricci flow are also obtained. The main new feature is that no curvature upper bound is assumed.
We develop a structure theory for non-collapsed Ricci shrinkers without any curvature condition. As applications, we obtain some curvature estimates of the Ricci shrinkers depending only on the non-collapsing constant.
In this paper we consider harmonic functions on gradient shrinking Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature. A Liouville theorem is proved without using gradient estimate : any bounded harmonic function is constant on gradient shrinking Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature. As an application, we show that the space of harmonic functions with polynomial growth has finite dimension.
We study the rigidity results for self-shrinkers in Euclidean space by restriction of the image under the Gauss map. The geometric properties of the target manifolds carry into effect. In the self-shrinking hypersurface situation Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2 not only improve the previous results, but also are optimal. In higher codimensional case, using geometric properties of the Grassmanian manifolds (the target manifolds of the Gauss map) we give a rigidity theorem for self-shrinking graphs.
Self-shrinkers are important geometric objects in the study of mean curvature flows, while the Bernstein Theorem is one of the most profound results in minimal surface theory. We prove a Bernstein type result for graphical self-shrinker surfaces with codimension two in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Namely, under certain natural conditions on the Jacobian of any smooth map from $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{R}^2$, we show that the self-shrinker which is the graph of this map must be affine linear. The proof relies on the derivation of structure equations of graphical self-shrinkers in terms of the parallel form…
We consider 2-dimensional orientable self-shrinkers $Σ$ for the Mean Curvature Flow of polynomial volume growth immersed in $\mathbb R^n$. We look at closed one forms minimizing the norm $\int_Σ\eterm |ω|^2$ in their cohomology class. Any closed form satisfying the Euler-Lagrange equation for this minimization will be called a Gaussian Harmonic one Form (GHF). We then use these forms to show that if such a $Σ$ has genus $\geq 1,$ then we have a lower bound on the supremum norm of $A^2$. GHF's may also be applied to create an upperbound for the lowest eigenvalue of the operator $L$. In the codi…
We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\RR^3$. Since self-shrinkers model singularities in mean curvature flow, this theorem can be thought of as a compactness result for the space of all singularities and it plays an important role in studying generic mean curvature flow.
In dimension $4$, we show that a nontrivial flat cone cannot be approximated by smooth Ricci shrinkers with bounded scalar curvature and Harnack inequality, under the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff topology. As applications, we obtain uniform positive lower bounds of scalar curvature and potential functions on Ricci shrinkers satisfying some natural geometric properties.
In this paper we construct an end of a self-similar shrinking solution of the mean curvature flow asymptotic to an isoparametric cone C and lying outside of C. We call a cone C in $R^{n+1}$ an isoparametric cone if C is the cone over a compact embedded isoparametric hypersurface $Γ\subset S^n$. The theory of isoparametic hypersurfaces is extremely rich and there are infinitely many distinct classes of examples, each with infinitely many members.
We construct examples of shrinkers and expanders for Lagrangian mean curvature flows. These examples are Hamiltonian stationary and asymptotic to the union of two Hamiltonian stationary cones found by Schoen and Wolfson. The Schoen-Wolfson cones $C_{p,q}$ are obstructions to the existence problems of special Lagrangians or Lagrangian minimal surfaces in the variational approach. It is known that these cone singularities cannot be resolved by any smooth oriented Lagrangian submanifolds. The shrinkers and expanders that we found can be glued together to yield solutions of the Brakke motion-a wea…
We estimate from above the rate at which a solution to the rescaled mean curvature flow on a closed hypersurface may converge to a limit self-similar solution, i.e. a shrinker. Our main result implies that any solution which converges to a shrinker faster than any fixed exponential rate must itself be shrinker itself.
In this note we will prove that an $n$ dimensional graphic self-shrinker in $R^{n+m}$ with flat normal bundle is a linear subspace. This result is a generalization of the corresponding result of Lu Wang in codimension one case.
Given a smooth, symmetric, homogeneous of degree one function $f\left(λ_{1},\cdots,\,λ_{n}\right)$ satisfying $\partial_{i}f>0$ for all $i=1,\cdots,\,n$, and a rotationally symmetric cone $\mathcal{C}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, we show that there is a $f$ self-shrinker (i.e. a hypersurface $Σ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which satisfies $f\left(κ_{1},\cdots,\,κ_{n}\right)+\frac{1}{2}X\cdot N=0$, where $X$ is the position vector, $N$ is the unit normal vector, and $κ_{1},\cdots,\,κ_{n}$ are principal curvatures of $Σ$) that is asymptotic to $\mathcal{C}$ at infinity.
We generalize a classification result for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow with nonnegative mean curvature, which was obtained by T. Colding and W. Minicozzi, replacing the assumption on polynomial volume growth with a weighted $L^2$ condition on the norm of the second fundamental form. Our approach adopt the viewpoint of weighted manifolds and permits also to recover and to extend some others recent classification and gap results for self-shrinkers.
We first bound the codimension of an ancient mean curvature flow by the entropy. As a consequence, all blowups lie in a Euclidean subspace whose dimension is bounded by the entropy and dimension of the evolving submanifolds. This drastically reduces the complexity of the system. Combined with \cite{CM12}, this gives the first general bounds on generic singularities of surfaces in arbitrary codimension. We also show sharp bounds for codimension in arguably some of the most important situations of ancient flows. Namely, we prove that in any dimension and codimension any ancient flow that is cyli…
We discover a bifurcation of the perturbations of non-generic closed self-shrinkers. If the generic perturbation is outward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from outside; if the generic perturbation is inward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from inside.
Using a maximum principle for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, we give new proofs of a rigidity theorem for rotationally symmetric compact self-shrinkers and a result about the asymptotic behavior of self-shrinkers. This comparison argument also implies a linear bound for the second fundamental form of self-shrinking surfaces under natural assumptions. As a consequence, translating solitons can be related to these self-shrinkers.
In this paper, we survey known results on closed self-shrinkers for mean curvature flow and discuss techniques used in recent constructions of closed self-shrinkers with classical rotational symmetry. We also propose new existence and uniqueness problems for closed self-shrinkers with bi-rotational symmetry and provide numerical evidence for the existence of new examples.
The purpose of this paper is to study complete self-shrinkers of mean curvature flow in Euclidean spaces. In the paper, we give a complete classification for 2-dimensional complete Lagrangian self-shrinkers in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^4$ with constant squared norm of the second fundamental form.
In this paper, we formulate the notion of the $\mathcal{F}$-stability of self-shrinking solutions to mean curvature flow in arbitrary codimension. Then we give some classifications of the $\mathcal{F}$-stable self-shrinkers in arbitrary codimension, in codimension one case, our results reduce to Colding-Minicozzi's results.
Self-shrinkers are the special solutions of mean curvature flow in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ that evolve by shrinking homothetically; they serve as singularity models for the flow. The entropy of a hypersurface introduced by Colding-Minicozzi is a Lyapunov functional for the mean curvature flow, and is fundamental to their theory of generic mean curvature flow. In this paper we prove that a conjecture of Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi-White, namely that any closed hypersurface in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ has entropy at least that of the round sphere, holds in any dimension $n$. This result had previously been e…
We obtain a Calabi-Yau type lower volume growth estimates for complete noncompact self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, more precisely, every complete noncompact properly immersed self-shrinker has at least linear volume growth.
We show existence of homothetically shrinking solutions of the fractional mean curvature flow, whose boundary consists in a prescribed numbers of concentric spheres. We prove that all these solutions, except from the ball, are dynamically unstable.
