We discover a bifurcation of the perturbations of non-generic closed self-shrinkers. If the generic perturbation is outward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from outside; if the generic perturbation is inward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from inside.
Regular shrinkers describe blow-up limits of a finite-time singularity of the motion by curvature of planar network of curves. This follows from Huisken's monotonicity formula. In this paper, we show that there is only one regular shrinker with 2 closed regions. This regular shrinker is the Cisgeminate eye. Moreover, we find some degenerate regular shrinkers with 2 closed regions.
In this paper, we study the Lagrangian F-stability of closed Lagrangian self-shrinkers immersed in complex Euclidean space. We show that any closed Lagrangian self-shrinker with first Betti number greater than one is Lagrangian F-unstable. In particular, any two-dimensional embedded closed Lagrangian self-shrinker is Lagrangian F-unstable. For a closed Lagrangian self-shrinker with first Betti number equal to one, we show that Lagrangian F-stability is equivalent to Hamiltonian F-stability. We also characterize Hamiltonian F-stability of a closed Lagrangian self-shrinker by its spectral proper…
In this paper, we survey known results on closed self-shrinkers for mean curvature flow and discuss techniques used in recent constructions of closed self-shrinkers with classical rotational symmetry. We also propose new existence and uniqueness problems for closed self-shrinkers with bi-rotational symmetry and provide numerical evidence for the existence of new examples.
In this paper, we prove that the closed Lagrangian self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^4$ which are symmetric with respect to a hyperplane are given by the products of Abresch-Langer curves. As a corollary, we obtain a new geometric characterization of the Clifford torus as the unique embedded closed Lagrangian self-shrinker symmetric with respect to a hyperplane in $\mathbb{R}^4$.
Self-shrinkers are the special solutions of mean curvature flow in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ that evolve by shrinking homothetically; they serve as singularity models for the flow. The entropy of a hypersurface introduced by Colding-Minicozzi is a Lyapunov functional for the mean curvature flow, and is fundamental to their theory of generic mean curvature flow. In this paper we prove that a conjecture of Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi-White, namely that any closed hypersurface in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ has entropy at least that of the round sphere, holds in any dimension $n$. This result had previously been e…
In this paper, we study the solution to the 1-dimensional $λ$-self shrinkers and show that for certain $λ<0$, there are some closed, embedded solutions other than the circle.
In this short paper we extend the classical Hoffman-Meeks Halfspace Theorem to self-shrinkers, that is: "Let $P $ be a hyperplane passing through the origin. The only properly immersed self-shrinker $Σ$ contained in one of the closed half-space determined by $P$ is $Σ= P$." Our proof is geometric and uses a catenoid type hypersurface discovered by Kleene-Moller. Also, using a similar geometric idea, we obtain that the only complete self-shrinker properly immersed in an closed cylinder $ \overline{B ^{k+1} (R)} \times \mathbb{R}^{n-k}\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$, for some $k\in \{1, \ldots ,n\}$ an…

In this paper, we systematically study the heat kernel of the Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. We develop several estimates which are much sharper than their counterparts in general closed Ricci flows. Many classical results, including the optimal Logarithmic Sobolev constant estimate, the Sobolev constant estimate, the no-local-collapsing theorem, the pseudo-locality theorem and the strong maximum principle for curvature tensors, are essentially improved for Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. Our results provide many necessary tools to analyze short time singularities of the Ricci…
This is a contribution to the program of dynamical approach to mean curvature flow initiated by Colding and Minicozzi. In this paper, we prove two main theorems. The first one is local in nature and the second one is global. In this first result, we pursue the stream of ideas of \cite{CM3} and get a slight refinement of their results. We apply the invariant manifold theory from hyperbolic dynamics to study the dynamics close to a closed shrinker that is not a sphere. In the second theorem, we show that if a hypersurface under the rescaled mean curvature flow converges to a closed shrinker that…
We consider 2-dimensional orientable self-shrinkers $Σ$ for the Mean Curvature Flow of polynomial volume growth immersed in $\mathbb R^n$. We look at closed one forms minimizing the norm $\int_Σ\eterm |ω|^2$ in their cohomology class. Any closed form satisfying the Euler-Lagrange equation for this minimization will be called a Gaussian Harmonic one Form (GHF). We then use these forms to show that if such a $Σ$ has genus $\geq 1,$ then we have a lower bound on the supremum norm of $A^2$. GHF's may also be applied to create an upperbound for the lowest eigenvalue of the operator $L$. In the codi…
We estimate from above the rate at which a solution to the rescaled mean curvature flow on a closed hypersurface may converge to a limit self-similar solution, i.e. a shrinker. Our main result implies that any solution which converges to a shrinker faster than any fixed exponential rate must itself be shrinker itself.
In this paper, we generalize Colding and Minicozzi's work \cite{CM} on the stability of self-shrinkers in the hypersurface case to higher co-dimensional cases. The first and second variation formulae of the $F$-functional are derived and an equivalent condition to the stability in general codimension is found. Moreover, we show that the closed Lagrangian self-shrinkers given by Anciaux in \cite{An} are unstable.
The entropy of a hypersurface is a geometric invariant that measures complexity and is invariant under rigid motions and dilations. It is given by the supremum over all Gaussian integrals with varying centers and scales. It is monotone under mean curvature flow, thus giving a Lyapunov functional. Therefore, the entropy of the initial hypersurface bounds the entropy at all future singularities. We show here that not only does the round sphere have the lowest entropy of any closed singularity, but there is a gap to the second lowest.
Let $(\bar{M},<,>,e^ψ)$ be a Riemannian manifold with a density, and let $M$ be a closed $n$-dimensional submanifold of $\bar{M}$ with the induced metric and density. We give an upper bound on the first eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the closed eigenvalue problem for $Δ_ψ$ (the Laplacian on $M$ associated to the density) in terms of the average of the norm of the vector ${\vec{H}}_{ψ} + {\bar \nabla}$ with respect to the volume form induced by the density, where ${\vec{H}}_{ψ}$ is the mean curvature of $M$ associated to the density $e^ψ$. When $\bar{M}=\Bbb R^{n+k}$ or $\bar{M}=S^{n+k-1}$, the equality b…
In this paper we prove that the generic singularities of mean curvature flow of closed embedded surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ modeled by closed self-shrinkers with multiplicity has multiplicity one. Together with the previous result by Colding-Minicozzi in [CM12], we conclude that the only generic singularity of mean curvature flow of closed embedded surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ modeled by closed self-shrinkers is a multiplicity one sphere. We also construct particular perturbations of the flow to avoid those singularities with multiplicity higher than one. Our result partially addresses the well-kno…
In [5], Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi-White showed that within the class of closed smooth self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the entropy is uniquely minimized at the round sphere. They conjectured that, for $2\leq n\leq 6$, the round sphere minimizes the entropy among all closed smooth hypersurfaces. Using an appropriate weak mean curvature flow, we prove their conjecture. For these dimensions, our approach also gives a new proof of the main result of [5] and extends its conclusions to compact singular self-shrinkers.
For each $n\geq 2$ we construct a new closed embedded mean curvature self-shrinking hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. These self-shrinkers are diffeomorphic to $S^{n-1}\times S^{n-1}\times S^1$ and are $SO(n)\times SO(n)$ invariant. The method is inspired by constructions of Hsiang and these surfaces generalize self-shrinking "tori" diffeomorphic to $S^{n-1}\times S^1$ constructed by Angenent.
In this paper, we study eigenvalues of the closed eigenvalue problem of the differential operator $ L$, which is introduced by Colding and Minicozzi in [4], on an $n$-dimensional compact self-shrinker in ${R}^{n+p}$. Estimates for eigenvalues of the differential operator $ L$ are obtained. Our estimates for eigenvalues of the differential operator $ L$ are sharp. Furthermore, we also study the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem of the differential operator $ L$ on a bounded domain with a piecewise smooth boundary in an $n$-dimensional complete self-shrinker in $ {R}^{n+p}$. For Euclidean space $ {R}…
We classify closed convex $α$-curve shortening flows for sub-affine-critical powers $α\leq \frac{1}{3}$. In addition, we show that closed convex smooth finite entropy $α$-curve shortening flows with $\frac{1}{3}<α$ is a shrinking circle. After normalization, the ancient flows satisfying the above conditions converge exponentially fast to smooth closed convex shrinkers at the backward infinity. In particular, when $α=\frac{1}{k^2-1}$ with $3\leq k \in \mathbb{N}$, the round circle shrinker has non-trivial Jacobi fields, but the ancient flows do not evolve along the Jacobi fields.
A closed surface evolving under mean curvature flow becomes singular in finite time. Near the singularity, the surface resembles a self-shrinker, a surface that shrinks by dilations under mean curvature flow. If the singularity is modeled on a self-shrinker other than a round sphere or cylinder, then the singularity is unstable under perturbations of the flow. One can quantify this instability using the index of the self-shrinker when viewed as a critical point of the entropy functional. In this work, we prove an upper bound on the index of rotationally symmetric self-shrinking tori in terms o…
In Part I of this article we generalize the Linearized Doubling (LD) approach, introduced in earlier work by NK, by proving a general theorem stating that if $Σ$ is a closed minimal surface embedded in a Riemannian three-manifold $(N,g)$ and its Jacobi operator has trivial kernel, then given a suitable family of LD solutions on $Σ$, a minimal surface $\breve{M}$ resembling two copies of $Σ$ joined by many small catenoidal bridges can be constructed by PDE gluing methods. (An LD solution $φ$ on $Σ$ is a singular solution of the Jacobi equation with logarithmic singularities which in the constru…
We construct many closed, embedded mean curvature self-shrinking surfaces $Σ_g^2\subseteq\mathbb{R}^3$ of high genus $g=2k$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$. Each of these shrinking solitons has isometry group equal to the dihedral group on $2g$ elements, and comes from the "gluing", i.e. desingularizing of the singular union, of the two known closed embedded self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^3$: The round 2-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, and Angenent's self-shrinking 2-torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ of revolution. This uses the results and methods N. Kapouleas developed for minimal surfaces in \cite{Ka97}--\cite{Ka}.
We study multiplicity of constant scalar curvature metrics in products of a compact closed manifold and a compact manifold with boundary using equivariant bifurcation theory.
We show, for mean curvature flows in Euclidean space, that if one of the tangent flows at a given space-time point consists of a closed, multiplicity-one, smoothly embedded self-similar shrinker, then it is the unique tangent flow at that point. That is the limit of the parabolic rescalings does not depend on the chosen sequence of rescalings. Furthermore, given such a closed, multiplicity-one, smoothly embedded self-similarly shrinker $Σ$, we show that any solution of the rescaled flow, which is sufficiently close to $Σ$, with Gaussian density ratios greater or equal to that of $Σ$, stays for…
In this paper, we show that if the mean curvature of a closed smooth embedded mean curvature flow in R^3 is of type-I, then the rescaled flow at the first finite singular time converges smoothly to a self-shrinker flow with multiplicity one. This result confirms Ilmanen's multiplicity-one conjecture under the assumption that the mean curvature is of type-I. As a corollary, we show that the mean curvature at the first singular time of a closed smooth embedded mean curvature flow in R^3 is at least of type-I.
We show that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ avoids multiplicity one tangent flows that are not round spheres/cylinders. In particular, we show that any non-cylindrical self-shrinker with a cylindrical end cannot arise generically.
We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear …
In this article, we extend the mean curvature flow with surgery to mean convex hypersurfaces with entropy less than $Λ_{n-2}$. In particular, 2-convexity is not assumed. Next we show the surgery flow with just the initial convexity assumption $H - \frac{\langle x, ν\rangle}{2} > 0$ is possible and as an application we use the surgery flow to show that smooth $n$-dimensional closed self shrinkers with entropy less than $Λ_{n-2}$ are isotopic to the round $n$-sphere.
It has long been conjectured that starting at a generic smooth closed embedded surface in R^3, the mean curvature flow remains smooth until it arrives at a singularity in a neighborhood of which the flow looks like concentric spheres or cylinders. That is, the only singularities of a generic flow are spherical or cylindrical. We will address this conjecture here and in a sequel. The higher dimensional case will be addressed elsewhere. The key in showing this conjecture is to show that shrinking spheres, cylinders and planes are the only stable self-shrinkers under the mean curvature flow. We p…
