A closed surface evolving under mean curvature flow becomes singular in finite time. Near the singularity, the surface resembles a self-shrinker, a surface that shrinks by dilations under mean curvature flow. If the singularity is modeled on a self-shrinker other than a round sphere or cylinder, then the singularity is unstable under perturbations of the flow. One can quantify this instability using the index of the self-shrinker when viewed as a critical point of the entropy functional.
In this work, we prove an upper bound on the index of rotationally symmetric self-shrinking tori in terms of their entropy and their maximum and minimum radii. While there have been a few lower bound results in the literature, we believe that this result is the first upper bound on the index of a self-shrinker. Our methods also give lower bounds on the index and the entropy, and our methods give simple formulas for two entropy-decreasing variations whose existence was proved by Liu. Surprisingly, the eigenvalue corresponding to these variations is exactly $-1$. Finally, we present some preliminary results in higher dimensions and six potential directions for future work.
In this paper we study the gradient Ricci shrinking soliton equation on rotationally symmetric manifolds of dimension three and higher and prove that the only complete examples of such metrics on $S^n$, $\R{n}$ and $\R{}\times S^{n-1}$ are, respectively, the round, flat, and standard cylindrical metrics.
In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
We study geometric properties of the Lagrangian self-shrinking tori in $\mathbb R^4$. When the area is bounded above uniformly, we prove that the entropy for the Lagrangian self-shrinking tori can only take finitely many values; this is done by deriving a Łojasiewicz-Simon type gradient inequality for the branched conformal self-shrinking tori and then combining with the compactness theorem in \cite{CMa}. When the area bound is small, we show that any Lagrangian self-shrinking torus in $\mathbb R^4$ with small area is embedded with uniform curvature estimates, and the space of such tori is com…
We show that any minimal torus in $S^3$ which is Alexandrov immersed must be rotationally symmetric. An analogous result holds for surfaces of constant mean curvature.
For each $n\geq 2$ we construct a new closed embedded mean curvature self-shrinking hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. These self-shrinkers are diffeomorphic to $S^{n-1}\times S^{n-1}\times S^1$ and are $SO(n)\times SO(n)$ invariant. The method is inspired by constructions of Hsiang and these surfaces generalize self-shrinking "tori" diffeomorphic to $S^{n-1}\times S^1$ constructed by Angenent.
In this paper, we show that an embedded Weingarten surface in S^3 of genus 1 must be rotationally symmetric, provided that certain structure conditions are satisfied. The argument involves an adaptation of our proof of Lawson's Conjecture for minimal tori.
We give a full classification of complete rotationally invariant surfaces with constant Gauss curvature in Berger spheres: they are either Clifford tori, which are flat, or spheres of Gauss curvature $K \geq K_0$ for a positive constant $K_0$, which we determine explicitly and depends on the geometry of the ambient Berger sphere. For values of $K_0 \leq K \leq K_P$, for a specific constant $K_P$, it was not known until now whether complete constant Gauss curvature $K$ surfaces existed in Berger spheres, so our classification provides the first examples. For $K > K_P$, we prove that the rotatio…
Using a maximum principle for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, we give new proofs of a rigidity theorem for rotationally symmetric compact self-shrinkers and a result about the asymptotic behavior of self-shrinkers. This comparison argument also implies a linear bound for the second fundamental form of self-shrinking surfaces under natural assumptions. As a consequence, translating solitons can be related to these self-shrinkers.
In this note we show that compact self shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are "topologically standard" in that any genus $g$ compact self shrinker is ambiently isotopic to the standard genus $g$ embedded surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. As a consequence self shrinking tori are unknotted.
In this paper we study the classification of ancient convex solutions to the mean curvature flow in $\R^{n+1}$. An open problem related to the classification of type II singularities is whether a convex translating solution is $k$-rotationally symmetric for some integer $2\le k\le n$, namely whether its level set is a sphere or cylinder $S^{k-1}\times \R^{n-k}$. In this paper we give an affirmative answer for entire solutions in dimension 2. In high dimensions we prove that there exist non-rotationally symmetric, entire convex translating solutions, but the blow-down in space of any entire con…
We study surfaces in TN that are area-stationary with respect to a neutral Kaehler metric constructed on TN from a riemannian metric g on N. We show that holomorphic curves in TN are area-stationary, while lagrangian surfaces that are area-stationary are also holomorphic and hence totally null. However, in general, area stationary surfaces are not holomorphic. We prove this by constructing counter-examples. In the case where g is rotationally symmetric, we find all area stationary surfaces that arise as graphs of sections of the bundle TN$\to$N and that are rotationally symmetric. When (N,g) i…
In this survey article, we discuss some topics on self-similar solutions to the Ricci flow and the mean curvature flow. Self-similar solutions to the Ricci flow are known as Ricci solitons. In the first part of this paper we discuss a lower diameter bound for compact manifolds with shrinking Ricci solitons. Such a bound can be obtained from an eigenvalue estimate for a twisted Laplacian, called the Witten-Laplacian. In the second part we discuss self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flow on cone manifolds. Many results have been obtained for solutions in $\bfR^n$ or $\bfC^n$. We see tha…
In this paper we present a new family of non-compact properly embedded, self-shrinking, asymptotically conical, positive mean curvature ends $Σ^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ that are hypersurfaces of revolution with circular boundaries. These hypersurface families interpolate between the plane and half-cylinder in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and any rotationally symmetric self-shrinking non-compact end belongs to our family. The proofs involve the global analysis of a cubic-derivative quasi-linear ODE. We also prove the following classification result: a given complete, embedded, self-shrinking hypersur…
Entropy is a natural geometric quantity measuring the complexity of a surface embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$. For dynamical reasons relating to mean curvature flow, Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi-White conjectured that the entropy of any closed surface is at least that of the self-shrinking two-sphere. We prove this conjecture for all closed embedded $2$-spheres. Assuming a conjectural Morse index bound (announced recently by Marques-Neves), we can improve the result to apply to all closed embedded surfaces that are not tori. Our results can be thought of as the parabolic analog to the Willmore conject…
We show that the underlying complex manifold of a complete non-compact two-\linebreak dimensional shrinking gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton $(M,\,g,\,X)$ with soliton metric $g$ with bounded scalar curvature $\operatorname{R}_{g}$ whose soliton vector field $X$ has an integral curve along which $\operatorname{R}_{g}\not\to0$ is biholomorphic to either $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{P}^{1}$ or to the blowup of this manifold at one point. Assuming the existence of such a soliton on this latter manifold, we show that it is toric and unique. We also identify the corresponding soliton vector field. Given t…
