In this paper we consider an effective divisor on the complex projective line and associate with it the module D consisting of all the derivations $θ$ such that $θ(I_i)\subset I_i^{m_i}$ for every $i$, where $I_i$ is the ideal of $p_i$. The module D is graded and free of rank 2; the degrees of its homogeneous basis, called the exponents, form an important invariant of the divisor. We prove that under certain conditions on $(m_i)$ the exponents do not depend on $\{p_i\}$. Our main result asserts that if these conditions do not hold for $(m_i)$ then there exists a general position of $n$ points for which the exponents do not change. We give an explicit formula for them. We also exhibit some examples of degeneration of the exponents, in particular those where the degeneration is defined by vanishing of certain Shur functions. As application and motivation, we show that our results imply Terao's conjecture (about the combinatorial nature of the freeness of hyperplane arrangements) for certain new classes of arrangements of lines in the complex projective plane.
We study $l$-very ample, ample and semi-ample divisors on the blown-up projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ in a collection of points in general position. We establish Fujita's conjectures for all ample divisors with the number of points bounded above by $2n$ and for an infinite family of ample divisors with an arbitrary number of points.
Suppose X is a projective variety, which needs not be smooth, and L an ample divisor on X. We show that there are integers c and b such that for any nonnegative integer p, L^d is normally generated and embeds X as a variety who defining ideal has linear syzygies upto the p-th step (i.e. L^d has property N_p) for all d >= cp + b.
We construct log resolutions of pairs on the blow-up of the projective space in an arbitrary number of general points and we discuss the semi-ampleness of the strict transforms. As an application we prove that the abundance conjecture holds for an infinite family of such pairs. For $n+2$ points, these strict transforms are F-nef divisors on the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+3}$ in a Kapranov's model: we show that all of them are nef.
Totally invariant divisors of endomorphisms of the projective space are expected to be always unions of linear spaces. Using logarithmic differentials we establish a lower bound for the degree of the non-normal locus of a totally invariant divisor. As a consequence we prove the linearity of totally invariant divisors for $\mathbb P^3$.
We show that a smooth divisor in a projective space can be reconstructed from the isomorphism class of the sheaf of logarithmic vector fields along it if and only if its defining equation is of Sebastiani-Thom type.
We prove an effective bound for the degree of a smooth divisor of a hypersurface of P^n, n>4 (projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero). Our result follows from a strong (since the degree of the divisor is not involved) generalization of the "Speciality theorem" of Gruson-Peskine, which we prove to hold for any smooth, subcanonical, codimension two, projective verieties of dimension at least three.
In this paper, we study the structure of projective space bundles whose relative anti-canonical line bundle is nef. As an application, we get a characterization of abelian varieties up to finite etale covering.
We compute the divisor class group and the Picard group of projective varieties with Hibi rings as homogeneous coordinate rings. These varieties are precisely the toric varieties associated to order polytopes. We use tools from the theory of toric varieties to get a description of the two groups which only depends on combinatorial properties of the underlying poset.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold of dimension $n$. Suppose that $T_X$ contains an ample subsheaf. We show that $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n$. As an application, we derive the classification of projective manifolds containing a $\mathbb{P}^r$-bundle as an ample divisor by the recent work of D.~Litt.
It is expected that a totally invariant divisor of a non-isomorphic endomorphism of the complex projective space is a union of hyperplanes. In this paper, we compute an upper bound for the degree of such a divisor. As a consequence, we prove the linearity of totally invariant divisors with isolated singularities.
Given a web (multi-foliation) and a linear system on a projective surface we construct divisors cutting out the locus where some element of the linear system has abnormal contact with the leaf of the web. We apply these ideas to reobtain a classical result by Salmon on the number of lines on a projective surface. In a different vein, we investigate the number of lines and of disjoint lines contained in a projective surface and tangent to a contact distribution.
In this paper we classify all the compactifications of affine homology $3$-cells into the blow-ups of the projective $3$-space along smooth curves such that the log canonical divisors are linearly trivial. As a result, we prove that each embedded affine $3$-fold is isomorphic to the affine $3$-space except one example.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $D$ be a free divisor with Jacobian ideal of linear type. We compute the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along $D$ and compare it with the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the hypersurface complement. Our result establishes a conjecture by Aluffi raised in \cite{hyparr}.
Given a projective variety X defined over a finite field, the zeta function of divisors attempts to count all irreducible, codimension one subvarieties of X, each measured by their projective degree. When the dimension of X is greater than one, this is a purely p-adic function, convergent on the open unit disk. Four conjectures are expected to hold, the first of which is p-adic meromorphic continuation to all of C_p. When the divisor class group (divisors modulo linear equivalence) of X has rank one, then all four conjectures are known to be true. In this paper, we discuss the higher rank case…
Using the data schemes developed by Arrondo-Sols-Speiser, we give a rigorous definition of algebraic differential equations on the complex projective space $P^n$. For an algebraic subvariety $S \subseteq P^n$, we present an explicit formula for the degree of the divisor of solutions of a differential equation on $S$ and give some examples of applications. We extend the technique and result to the real case.
We describe the effective and the big cones of a projective symmetric variety. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient combinatorial criterion for the bigness of a nef divisor on a projective symmetric variety. When the variety is toroidal and the divisor is $G$-stable, such criterion has an explicit geometric interpretation. Finally, we describe the spherical closure of a symmetric subgroup.
In this note we introduce a Waldschmidt decomposition of divisors which might be viewed as a generalization of Zariski decomposition based on the effectivity rather than the nefness of divisors. As an immediate application we prove a recursive formula providing new effective lower bounds on Waldschmidt constants of very general points in projective spaces. We use these bounds in order to verify Demailly's conjecture in a number of new cases.
Let $X$ be a four-dimensional projective variety defined over the field of complex numbers with only terminal singularities. We prove that if the intersection number of the canonical divisor $K$ with every very general curve is positive ($K$ is almost numerically positive) then every very general proper subvariety of $X$ is of general type in the viewpoint of geometric Kodaira dimension. We note that the converse does not hold for simple abelian varieties.
Let $S$ be a rational surface with $\dim|-K_S|\ge 1$ and let $π: X\rightarrow S$ be a ramified cyclic covering from a nonruled smooth surface $X$. We show that for any integer $k\ge 3$ and ample divisor $A$ on $S$, the adjoint divisor $K_X+kπ^*A$ is very ample and normally generated. Similar result holds for minimal (possibly singular) coverings.
We totally classify the projective toric varieties whose canonical divisors are divisible by their dimensions. In Appendix, we show that Reid's toric Mori theory implies Mabuchi's characterization of the projective space for toric varieties.
In this article we define and study convex bodies associated to linear series of adelic divisors over quasi-projective varieties that have been introduced recently by Xinyi Yuan and Shou-Wu Zhang. Restricting our attention to big adelic divisors, we deduce properties of volumes obtained by Yuan and Zhang using different convex geometric arguments. We go on to define augmented base loci and restricted volumes of adelic divisors following the works of Michael Nakamaye and develop a similar study using convex bodies to obtain analogous properties for restricted volumes. We closely follow methods …
We consider a Cartier divisor L on a d-dimensional complex projective variety X. It is well-known that the dimensions of the cohomomology groups H^i(X,O_X(mL)) grow at most like m^d, and it is natural to ask when one of these actually has maximal growth. For i = 0, this happens by definition exactly when L is big. Here we focus on the question of when one or more of the higher cohomology groups grows maximally. Our main result is that if one considers also small perturbations of the divisor in question, then the maximal growth of higher cohomology characterizes non-ample divisors. This criteri…
The paper reviews recent developments in the study of Alexander invariants of quasi-projective manifolds using methods of singularity theory. Several results in topology of the complements to singular plane curves and hypersurfaces in projective space extended to the case of curves on simply connected smooth projective surfaces.
We consider an arbitrary int-amplified surjective endomorphism $f$ of a normal projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ and its $f^{-1}$-stable prime divisors. We extend the early result for the case of polarized endomorphisms to the case of int-amplified endomorphisms. Assume further that $X$ has at worst Kawamata log terminal singularities. We prove that the total number of $f^{-1}$-stable prime divisors has an optimal upper bound $\dim X+ρ(X)$, where $ρ(X)$ is the Picard number. Also, we give a sufficient condition for $X$ to be rationally connected and simply connected. Finally, by running…
We give algorithms for computing with divisors on projective curves over finite fields, and with their Jacobians, using the algorithmic representation of projective curves developed by Khuri-Makdisi. We show that many desirable operations can be done efficiently in this setting: decomposing divisors into prime divisors; computing pull-backs and push-forwards of divisors under finite morphisms, and hence Picard and Albanese maps on Jacobians; generating uniformly random divisors and points on Jacobians; computing Frobenius maps and Kummer maps; and finding a basis for the $l$-torsion of the Pic…
This paper is an enhancement of the previous note "Explicit computations of Zariski decompositions on P_Z^1". In this paper, we observe several properties of a certain kind of an arithmetic divisor D on the n-dimensional projective space over Z and give the exact form of the Zariski decomposition of D on the projective line over Z. Further, we show that, if n>=2 and D is big and non-nef, then, for any birational morphism f: X --> P^n_Z of projective, generically smooth and normal arithmetic varieties, we can not expect a suitable Zariski decomposition of f^*(D). We also give a concrete constru…
Let X be a projective variety which is algebraic Lang hyperbolic. We show that Lang's conjecture holds (one direction only): X and all its subvarieties are of general type and the canonical divisor K_X is ample at smooth points and Kawamata log terminal points of X, provided that K_X is Q-Cartier, no Calabi-Yau variety is algebraic Lang hyperbolic and a weak abundance conjecture holds.
After a general discussion of group actions, orbifolds, and "weak orbifolds" this note will provide elementary introductions to two basic moduli spaces over the real or complex numbers: First the moduli space of effective divisors with finite stabilizer on the projective space ${\mathbb P}^1$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_2$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^1$; and then the moduli space of effective 1-cycles with finite stabilizer on ${\mathbb P}^2$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_3$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^2$.
We shall describe the divisor class group and the graded canonical module of the multi-section ring for a normal projective variety X and Weil divisors D_1,..., D_s on X under a mild condition. In the proof, we use the theory of Krull domain and the equivariant twisted inverse functor due to Hashimoto.
In this article we generalize the injectivity of the push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow groups, induced by the closed embedding of $\Sym^m C$ into $\Sym^n C$ for $m\leq n$, where $C$ is a smooth projective curve, to symmetric powers of a smooth projective variety of higher dimension. We also prove the analog of this theorem for product of symmetric powers of smooth projective varieties. As an application we prove the injectivity of the push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow groups, induced by the closed embedding of self product of theta divisor into the self product of the…
In these notes we investigate the cone of nef curves of projective varieties, which is the dual cone to the cone of pseudo-effective divisors. We prove a structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt pairs of arbitrary dimension from the point of view of the Minimal Model Program. This is a generalization of Batyrev's structure theorem for the cone of nef curves of projective terminal threefolds.
A $\mathbf{Q}$-Cartier divisor $D$ on a projective variety $M$ is {\it almost nup}, if $(D , C) > 0$ for every very general curve $C$ on $M$. An algebraic variety $X$ is of {\it almost general type}, if there exists a projective variety $M$ with only terminal singularities such that the canonical divisor $K_M$ is almost nup and such that $M$ is birationally equivalent to $X$. We prove that a complex algebraic variety is of almost general type if and only if it is neither uniruled nor covered by any family of varieties being birationally equivalent to minimal varieties with numerically trivial …
In this paper, we study a projective klt pair $(X, Δ)$ with the nef anti-log canonical divisor $-(K_X+Δ)$ and its maximally rationally connected fibration $ψ: X \dashrightarrow Y$. We prove that the numerical dimension of the anti-log canonical divisor $-(K_X+Δ)$ on $X$ coincides with that of the anti-log canonical divisor $-(K_{X_y}+Δ_{X_y})$ on a general fiber $X_y$ of $ψ: X \dashrightarrow Y$, which is an analogue of Ejiri-Gongyo's result formulated for the Kodaira dimension. As a corollary, we reveal a relation between positivity of the anti-canonical divisor and the rational connectedness…
Any ample Cartier divisor D on a projective variety X is strictly nef (i.e. D.C>0 for any effective curve C on X). In general, the converse statement does not hold. But this is conjectured to be true for anticanonical divisors. The present paper establishes this fact for normal complex projective threefolds with canonical singularities. This result extends several previously known special cases. The proof rests mainly on sophisticated techniques of three dimensional birational geometry developed in the last two decades.
The total coordinate ring TC(X) of a normal variety is a generalization of the ring introduced and studied by Cox in connection with a toric variety. Consider a normal projective variety X with divisor class group Cl(X), and let us assume that it is a finitely generated free abelian group. We define the total coordinate ring of X to be TC(X) = oplus_{D} H^0 (X, O_X (D)), where the sum as above is taken over all Weil divisors of X contained in a fixed complete system of representatives of Cl(X). We prove that for any normal projective variety X, TC(X) is a UFD, this is a corollary of a more gen…
In this paper, we construct compactifications of $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of $n$-punctured projective line and study the boundary divisor of the compactifications. This study is motivated by the conjecture for the configuration of the boundary divisor, due to C. Simpson. We verify the conjecture for a few examples.
We make a very detailed analysis of the numerical properties of effective divisors whose support is contained in the exceptional locus of a birational morphism of smooth projective surfaces. As an application we extend Miyaoka's inequality on the number of canonical singularities on a projective normal surface with non-negative Kodaira dimension to the non minimal case, obtaining a slightly better result than known extensions by Megyesi and Langer.
For smooth projective 3-folds of general type, we prove that the relative canonical stability $μ_s(3)\leq 8$. This is induced from our improved result of Kollár: the m-canonical map of a smooth projective 3-fold of general type is birational whenever $m\geq 5k+6$, provided $P_k(X)\geq 2$. The Q-divisor method is intensively developed to prove our results.
We give a criterion for the projectivisation of a reflexive sheaf on a klt space to be induced by a projective representation of the fundamental group of the smooth locus. This criterion is then applied to give a characterisation of finite quotients of projective spaces and Abelian varieties by $\mathbb{Q}$-Chern class (in)equalities and a suitable stability condition. This stability condition is formulated in terms of a naturally defined extension of the tangent sheaf by the structure sheaf. We further examine cases in which this stability condition is satisfied, comparing it to K-semistabili…
Lasell and Ramachandran show that the existence of rational curves of positive self-intersection on a smooth projective surface $X$ implies that all the finite dimensional linear representations of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ are finite. In this article, we generalize Lasell and Ramachandran's result to the case of $π_1$-small divisors on quasiprojective varieties. We also study $π_1$-small curves and hyperbolicity properties of smooth projective surfaces of general type with infinite fundamental groups.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective rationally connected threefold with nef anticanonical divisor. We give a classification for the case when $-K_X$ is not semi-ample.
Let $X$ be a normal projective threefold with mild singularities, and $L_X$ a strictly nef $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor on $X$. First, we show the ampleness of $K_X+tL_X$ with sufficiently large $t$ if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\neq 0$ or the augmented irregularity $q^{\circ}(X)\neq 0$. Second, we show that, if $(X,Δ)$ is a projective klt threefold pair with the anti-log canonical divisor $-(K_X+Δ)$ being strictly nef, then $X$ is rationally connected.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety. A surjective endomorphism $f:X\to X$ is int-amplified if $f^\ast L - L =H$ for some ample Cartier divisors $L$ and $H$. This is a generalization of the so-called polarized endomorphism which requires that $f^*H\sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and $q>1$. We show that this generalization keeps all nice properties of the polarized case in terms of the singularity, canonical divisor, and equivariant minimal model program.
In this paper, we classify projective toric birational morphisms from Gorenstein toric 3-folds onto the 3-dimensional affine space with relatively ample anti-canonical divisors.
The classical volume polynomial in algebraic geometry measures the degrees of ample (and nef) divisors on a smooth projective variety. We introduce an analogous volume polynomial for matroids, and give a complete combinatorial formula. For a realizable matroid, we thus obtain an explicit formula for the classical volume polynomial of the associated wonderful compactification. We then introduce a new invariant called the volume of a matroid as a particular specialization of its volume polynomial, and discuss its algebro-geometric and combinatorial properties in connection to graded linear serie…
In this paper we determine which blow-ups $X$ of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at general points are log Fano, that is, when there exists an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $Δ$ such that $-(K_X+Δ)$ is ample and the pair $(X,Δ)$ is klt. For these blow-ups, we produce explicit boundary divisors $Δ$ making $X$ log Fano.
The philosophy that ``a projective manifold is more special than any of its smooth hyperplane sections" was one of the classical principles of projective geometry. Lefschetz type results and related vanishing theorems were among the typically used techniques. We shall survey most of the problems, results and conjectures in this area, using the modern setting of ample divisors, and (some aspects of) Mori theory.
In Butler, J.Differential Geom. 39 (1):1--34,1994, the author gives a sufficient condition for a line bundle associated with a divisor D to be normally generated on $X=P(E)$ where E is a vector bundle over a smooth curve C. A line bundle which is ample and normally generated is automatically very ample. Therefore the condition found in Butler's work, together with Miyaoka's well known ampleness criterion, give a sufficient condition for the very ampleness of D on X. This work is devoted to the study of numerical criteria for very ampleness of divisors D which do not satisfy the above criterion…
Let $K$ be a discretely valued field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ with perfect residue field. Let $K(x)$ be the rational function field in one variable. Let $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathcal{O}_K}$ be the standard smooth model of $\mathbb{P}^1_K$ with coordinate $x$ on irreducible special fiber. Let $f(x) \in \mathcal{O}_K[x]$ be a monic irreducible polynomial with corresponding divisor of zeroes $\text{div}_0(f)$ on $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathcal{O}_K}$. We give an explicit description of the minimal embedded resolution $\mathcal{Y}$ of the pair $(\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathcal{O}_K}, \text{div}_0(f))$ by us…
