We exhibit a family of infinite, finitely-presented, nilpotent-by-abelian groups. Each member of this family is a solvable S-arithmetic group that is related to Baumslag-Solitar groups, and everyone of these groups has a quasi-isometry group that is virtually a product of a solvable real Lie group and a solvable p-adic Lie group.
In addition, we propose a candidate for a polycyclic group whose quasi-isometry group is a solvable real Lie group, and we introduce a candidate for a quasi-isometrically rigid solvable group that is not finitely presented. We also record some conjectures on the large-scale geometry of lamplighter groups.
We say that a group has property $R_{\infty}$ if any group automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. Fel'shtyn and Goncalves prove that the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(1,m) have property $R_{\infty}$. We define a solvable generalization $Γ(S)$ of these groups which we show to have property $R_{\infty}$. We then show that property $R_{\infty}$ is geometric for these groups, that is, any group quasi-isometric to $Γ(S)$ has property $R_{\infty}$ as well.
We show that the Magnus embedding, which embeds the free solvable group of rank r and degree d into the wreath product of the free abelian group of rank r with the free solvable group of rank r and degree d-1, is a quasi-isometry.
This paper overviews recent developments in the classification up to quasi-isometry of finitely generated groups, and more specifically of relatively hyperbolic groups.
We show that being finitely presentable and being finitely presentable with solvable word problem are quasi-isometry invariants of finitely generated left cancellative monoids. Our main tool is an elementary, but useful, geometric characterisation of finite presentability for left cancellative monoids. We also give examples to show that this characterisation does not extend to monoids in general, and indeed that properties such as solvable word problem are not isometry invariants for general monoids.
We investigate the palindromic width of finitely generated solvable groups. We prove that every finitely generated $3$-step solvable group has finite palindromic width. More generally, we show the finiteness of palindromic width for finitely generated abelian-by-nilpotent-by-nilpotent groups. For arbitrary solvable groups of step $\geq 3$, we prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated solvable group that is an extension of an abelian group by a group satisfying the maximal condition for normal subgroups, then the palindromic width of $G$ is finite. We also prove that the palindromic width of $\…
We prove that every countable group with solvable power problem embeds into a finitely presented 2-generated group with solvable power and conjugacy problems.
We prove that commensurizers of two-ended subgroups with at least three coends in one-ended, finitely presented groups are invariant under quasi-isometries. We discuss a variety of applications of this result.
We show that a finitely generated residually finite rationally solvable (or RFRS) group $G$ is virtually fibred, in the sense that it admits a virtual surjection to $\mathbb{Z}$ with a finitely generated kernel, if and only if the first $L^2$-Betti number of $G$ vanishes. This generalises (and gives a new proof of) the analogous result of Ian Agol for fundamental groups of $3$-manifolds.
We study a family of finitely generated residually finite small cancellation groups. These groups are quotients of $F_2$ depending on a subset $S$ of positive integers. Varying $S$ yields continuously many groups up to quasi-isometry.
We prove the following version of Milnor's theorem on solvable groups of exponential growth: A finitely generated solvable group which is not polycyclic contains an ascending HNN extension. Consequently, a finitely generated solvable group is ERF iff it is polycyclic.
We prove that the growth rate of an endomorphism of a finitely generated nilpotent group equals to the growth rate of induced endomorphism on its abelinization, generalizing the corresponding result for an automorphism in [14]. We also study growth rates of endomorphisms for specific solvable groups, lattices of Sol, providing a counterexample to a known result in [5] and proving that the growth rate is an algebraic number.
We amend the statement of point~(i) in Theorem~1.3 in arxiv:0901.1022 and supply the additional arguments and minor changes for the results that depend on it. We also seize the occasion and generalize to non-finitely generated lattices.
We prove that PSL(2,Z[1/p]) gives the first example of groups which are not quasi-isometric to each other but have the same quasi-isometry group. Namely, PSL(2,Z[1/p]) and PSL(2,Z[1/q]) are not quasi-isometric unless p=q, and, independent of p, the quasi-isometry group of PSL(2,Z[1/p]) is PSL(2,Q). In addition, we characterize PSL(2,Z[1/p]) uniquely among all finitely generated groups by its quasi-isometry type.
We construct quasi-isometry invariants of a one-ended finitely presented group by considering the tree of cylinders of a two-ended JSJ decomposition of the group. When the group satisfies additional quasi-isometric rigidity hypotheses we construct finer invariants by also considering relative amounts of stretching across edges of the tree of cylinders.
A nonpolycyclic nilpotent-by-cyclic group Gamma can be expressed as the HNN extension of a finitely-generated nilpotent group N. The first main result is that quasi-isometric nilpotent-by-cyclic groups are HNN extensions of quasi-isometric nilpotent groups. The nonsurjective injection defining such an extension induces an injective endomorphism phi of the Lie algebra g associated to the Lie group in which N is a lattice. A normal form for automorphisms of nilpotent Lie algebras--permuted absolute Jordan form-- is defined and conjectured to be a quasi-isometry invariant. We show that if phi, th…
We study the large scale geometry of the upper triangular subgroup of PSL(2,Z[1/n]), which arises naturally in a geometric context. We prove a quasi-isometry classification theorem and show that these groups are quasi-isometrically rigid with infinite dimensional quasi-isometry group. We generalize our results to a larger class of groups which are metabelian and are higher dimensional analogues of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(1,n).
We use basic tools of descriptive set theory to prove that a closed set $\mathcal S$ of marked groups has $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry classes provided every non-empty open subset of $\mathcal S$ contains at least two non-quasi-isometric groups. It follows that every perfect set of marked groups having a dense subset of finitely presented groups contains $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry classes. These results account for most known constructions of continuous families of non-quasi-isometric finitely generated groups. They can also be used to prove the existence of $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry c…
We construct easy embeddings of relatively free groups (say the free Burnside group, the free solvable group) into finitely presented groups. We introduce a concept of verbal isoperimetric function of a group variety. We prove that if the verbal Dehn function of a relatively free group is bounded by a polynomial then the group can be embedded quasi-isometrically into a finitely presented group with polynomial isoperimetric function. We also construct an easy embedding of any Baumslag-Solitar solvable group into a finitely presented group with polynomial Dehn function.
We consider sequences of finitely generated discrete subgroups Gamma_i=rho_i(Gamma) of a rank 1 Lie group G, where the representations rho_i are not necessarily faithful. We show that, for algebraically convergent sequences (Gamma_i), unless Gamma_i's are (eventually) elementary or contain normal finite subgroups of arbitrarily high order, their algebraic limit is a discrete nonelementary subgroup of G. In the case of divergent sequences (Gamma_i) we show that the limiting action on a real tree T satisfies certain semistability condition, which generalizes the notion of stability introduced by…
Pursueing our investigations on the relations between Thompson groups and mapping class groups, we introduce the group $T^*$ (and its further generalizations) which is an extension of the Ptolemy-Thompson group $T$ by means of the full braid group $B_{\infty}$ on infinitely many strands. We prove that it is a finitely presented group with solvable word problem, and give an explicit presentation of it.
In this paper, we present an explicit formula for the Baer invariant of a finitely generated abelian group with respect to the variety of polynilpotent groups of class row $(c_1,...,c_t)$, ${\cal N}_{c_1,...,c_t}$. In particular, one can obtain an explicit structure of the $\ell$-solvable multiplier (the Baer invariant with respect to the vaiety of solvable groups of length at most $\ell\geq 1,\ {\cal S}_{\ell}$.) of a finitely generated abelian group.
We provide polynomial lower bounds for residual finiteness of residually finite, finitely generated solvable groups that admit infinite order elements in the Fitting subgroup of strict distortion at least exponential. For this class of solvable groups which include polycyclic groups with a nontrivial exponential radical and the metabelian Baumslag-Solitar groups, we improve the lower bounds found in the literature. Additionally, for the class of residually finite, finitely generated solvable groups of infinite Prüfer rank that satisfy the conditions of our theorem, we provide the first nontriv…
We prove that, for a finitely generated residually finite group, having solvable word problem is not a sufficient condition to be a subgroup of a finitely presented residually finite group. The obstruction is given by a residually finite group with solvable word problem for which there is no effective method that allows, given some non-identity element, to find a morphism onto a finite group in which this element has a non-trivial image. We also prove that the depth function of this group grows faster than any recursive function.
We present a method for computing the number of epimorphisms from a finitely-presented group G to a finite solvable group Γ, which generalizes a formula of Gäschutz. Key to this approach are the degree 1 and 2 cohomology groups of G, with certain twisted coefficients. As an application, we count low-index subgroups of G. We also investigate the finite solvable quotients of the Baumslag-Solitar groups, the Baumslag parafree groups, and the Artin braid groups.
We develop a practical algorithm to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup of a solvable algebraic group $G$ is arithmetic. This incorporates a procedure to compute a generating set of an arithmetic subgroup of $G$. We also provide a simple new algorithm for integrality testing of finitely generated solvable-by-finite linear groups over the rational field. The algorithms have been implemented in {\sc Magma}.
Let BS(1,n)= < a,b: aba^{-1}=b^n >. We prove that any finitely-generated group quasi-isometric to BS(1,n) is (up to finite groups) isomorphic to BS(1,n). We also show that any uniform group of quasisimilarities of the real line is bilipschitz conjugate to an affine group.
We show that every non-decreasing function $f\colon \mathbb N\to \mathbb N$ bounded from above by $a^n$ for some $a\ge 1$ can be realized (up to a natural equivalence) as the conjugacy growth function of a finitely generated group. We also construct a finitely generated group $G$ and a subgroup $H\le G$ of index 2 such that $H$ has only 2 conjugacy classes while the conjugacy growth of $G$ is exponential. In particular, conjugacy growth is not a quasi-isometry invariant.
We construct a class of finitely presented groups where the isomorphism problem is solvable but the commensurability problem is unsolvable. Conversely, we construct a class of finitely presented groups within which the commensurability problem is solvable but the isomorphism problem is unsolvable. These are first examples of such a contrastive complexity behaviour with respect to the isomorphism problem.
We introduce a strong notion of quasiconvexity in finitely generated groups, which we call stability. Stability agrees with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and is preserved under quasi-isometry for finitely generated groups. We show that the stable subgroups of mapping class groups are precisely the convex cocompact subgroups. This generalizes a well-known result of Behrstock and is related to questions asked by Farb-Mosher and Farb.
In this paper we study the residual solvability of the generalized free product of finitely generated nilpotent groups. We show that these kinds of structures are often residually solvable.

We show that the conjugacy problem is solvable in [finitely generated free]-by-cyclic groups, by using a result of O. Maslakova that one can algorithmically find generating sets for the fixed subgroups of free group automorphisms, and one of P. Brinkmann that one can determine whether two cyclic words in a free group are mapped to each other by some power of a given automorphism. The algorithm effectively computes a conjugating element, if it exists. We also solve the power conjugacy problem and give an algorithm to recognize if two given elements of a finitely generated free group are Reideme…
In this article we introduce the notion of weak identities in a group and study their properties. We show that weak identities have some similar properties to ordinary ones. We use this notion to prove that any finitely generated solvable discriminating group is abelian.
Given a finitely generated group $G$, we are interested in common geometric properties of all graphs of faithful actions of $G$. In this article we focus on their growth. We say that a group $G$ has a Schreier growth gap $f(n)$ if every faithful $G$-set $X$ satisfies $\mathrm{vol}_{G, X}(n)\succcurlyeq f(n)$, where $\mathrm{vol}_{G, X}(n)$ is the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$. Here we study Schreier growth gaps for finitely generated solvable groups. We prove that if a metabelian group $G$ is either finitely presented or torsion-free, then $G$ has a Schreier growth gap $n^2$, provided $G$…
In this note, we announce the first results on quasi-isometric rigidity of non-nilpotent polycyclic groups. In particular, we prove that any group quasi-isometric to the three dimenionsional solvable Lie group Sol is virtually a lattice in Sol. We prove analogous results for groups quasi-isometric to $R \ltimes R^n$ where the semidirect product is defined by a diagonalizable matrix of determinant one with no eigenvalues on the unit circle. Our approach to these problems is to first classify all self quasi-isometries of the solvable Lie group. Our classification of self quasi-isometries for $R …
We prove that every finitely generated, virtually solvable minimax group can be expressed as a homomorphic image of a virtually torsion-free, virtually solvable minimax group. This result enables us to generalize a theorem of Ch. Pittet and L. Saloff-Coste about random walks on finitely generated, virtually solvable minimax groups. Moreover, the paper identifies properties, such as the derived length and the nilpotency class of the Fitting subgroup, that are preserved in the covering process. Finally, we determine exactly which infinitely generated, virtually solvable minimax groups also posse…
We study relations between the additive and the multiplicative groups of a two-sided skew brace. In particular, we prove that if the additive group of a two-sided skew brace is finite solvable (respectively, finitely generated nilpotent, finitely generated residually nilpotent, finitely generated residually finite), then the multiplicative group of this skew brace is solvable (respectively, solvable, residually solvable, residually finite). Also, we prove that if the multiplicative group of a two-sided skew brace is nilpotent of nilpotency class $k$, then the additive group of this skew brace …
Let $\mathcal{X}_S$ denote the class of spaces homeomorphic to two closed orientable surfaces of genus greater than one identified to each other along an essential simple closed curve in each surface. Let $\mathcal{C}_S$ denote the set of fundamental groups of spaces in $\mathcal{X}_S$. In this paper, we characterize the abstract commensurability classes within $\mathcal{C}_S$ in terms of the ratio of the Euler characteristic of the surfaces identified and the topological type of the curves identified. We prove that all groups in $\mathcal{C}_S$ are quasi-isometric by exhibiting a bilipschitz …
We show that for each $λ\in [\frac{1}{2}, 1]$, there exists a solvable group and a finitely supported measure such that the associated random walk has upper speed exponent $λ$.
Finite decomposition complexity and asymptotic dimension growth are two generalizations of M. Gromov's asymptotic dimension which can be used to prove property A for large classes of finitely generated groups of infinite asymptotic dimension. In this paper, we introduce the notion of decomposition complexity growth, which is a quasi-isometry invariant generalizing both finite decomposition complexity and dimension growth. We show that subexponential decomposition complexity growth implies property A, and is preserved by certain group and metric constructions.
We define the notion of computability of Følner sets for finitely generated amenable groups. We prove, by an explicit description, that the Kharlampovich group, a finitely presented solvable group with unsolvable word problem, has computable Følner sets. We also prove computability of Følner sets for a group that is extension of an amenable group with solvable word problem by a finitely generated group with computable Følner sets with subrecursive distortion function. Moreover we obtain some known and some new upper bounds for the Følner function in these particular extensions.
Let G be a finitely generated linear group over a field of characteristic 0. Suppose that every solvable subgroup of G is polycyclic. Then the claim is made that any solvable subgroup of G is separable. This is proven for G=SL_n(Z). However, the proof of the main theorem in section 4 is incomplete.
It is shown that a closed solvable subgroup of a connected Lie group is compactly generated. In particular, every discrete solvable subgroup of a connected Lie group is finitely generated. Generalizations to locally compact groups are discussed as far as they carry.
We obtain non-vanishing of group $L^p$-cohomology of Lie groups for $p$ large and when the degree is equal to the rank of the group. This applies both to semisimple and to some suitable solvable groups. In particular, it confirms that Gromov's question on vanishing below the rank is formulated optimally. To achieve this, some complementary vanishings are combined with the use of spectral sequences. To deduce the semisimple case from the solvable one, we also need comparison results between various theories for $L^p$-cohomology, allowing the use of quasi-isometry invariance.
In this paper, we prove a series of results on group embeddings in groups with a small number of generators. We show that each finitely generated group $G$ lying in a variety ${\mathcal M}$ can be embedded in a $4$-generated group $H \in {\mathcal M}{\mathcal A}$ (${\mathcal A}$ means the variety of abelian groups). If $G$ is a finite group, then $H$ can also be found as a finite group. It follows, that any finitely generated (finite) solvable group $G$ of the derived length $l$ can be embedded in a $4$-generated (finite) solvable group $H$ of length $l+1$. Thus, we answer the question of V. H…
We extend Gromov's notion of asymptotic dimension of finitely generated groups to all discrete groups. In particular, we extend the Hurewicz type theorem proven in [B-D2] to general groups. Then we use this extension to prove a formula for the asymptotic dimension of finitely generated solvable groups in terms of their Hirsch length.
Given a group $G$ with bounded torsion that acts properly on a systolic complex, we show that every solvable subgroup of $G$ is finitely generated and virtually abelian of rank at most $2$. In particular this gives a new proof of the above theorem for systolic groups. The main tools used in the proof are the Product Decomposition Theorem and the Flat Torus Theorem.
We build quasi--isometry invariants of relatively hyperbolic groups which detect the hyperbolic parts of the group; these are variations of the stable dimension constructions previously introduced by the authors. We prove that, given any finite collection of finitely generated groups $\mathcal{H}$ each of which either has finite stable dimension or is non-relatively hyperbolic, there exist infinitely many quasi--isometry types of one--ended groups which are hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal{H}$. The groups are constructed using small cancellation theory over free products.
Building upon work of Y. Shalom we give a homological-algebra flavored definition of an induction map in group homology associated to a topological coupling. As an application we obtain estimates of the (co)homological dimension of groups G and H, where G embeds uniformly into H and the (co)homological dimension of G is finite. Another consequence of our results is that the Hirsch ranks of quasi-isometric solvable groups coincide. Further, it is shown that the real cohomology rings of quasi-isometric nilpotent groups are isomorphic as graded rings. On the analytic side, we apply the induction …
