A nonpolycyclic nilpotent-by-cyclic group Gamma can be expressed as the HNN extension of a finitely-generated nilpotent group N. The first main result is that quasi-isometric nilpotent-by-cyclic groups are HNN extensions of quasi-isometric nilpotent groups. The nonsurjective injection defining such an extension induces an injective endomorphism phi of the Lie algebra g associated to the Lie group in which N is a lattice. A normal form for automorphisms of nilpotent Lie algebras--permuted absolute Jordan form-- is defined and conjectured to be a quasi-isometry invariant. We show that if phi, theta are endomorphisms of lattices in a fixed Carnot group G, and if the induced automorphisms of g have the same permuted absolute Jordan form, then Gamma_phi and Gamma_theta are quasi-isometric. Two quasi-isometry invariants are also found: the set of ``divergence rates'' of vertical flow lines: D_phi the ``growth spaces'': g_n subset g These do not establish that permuted absolute Jordan form is a quasi-isometry invariant, although they are major steps toward that conjecture. Furthermore, the quasi-isometric rigidity of finitely-presented nilpotent-by-cyclic groups is proven: any finitely-presented group quasi-isometric to a nonpolycyclic nilpotent-by-cyclic group is (virtually-nilpotent)-by-cyclic.
The first author, in 2001, presented a structure for the Baer-invariant of a nilpotent product of cyclic groups with respect to the variety of nilpotent groups. In this paper, using the above structure, we prove the existence of an ${\cal N}_c$-covering group for a nilpotent product of a family of cyclic groups. We also present a structure for the ${\cal N}_c$-covering group.
A group is called capable if it is a central factor group. We consider the capability of certain nilpotent products of cyclic groups, and obtain a generalisation of a theorem of Baer for the small class case. The approach may also be used to obtain some recent results on the capability of certain nilpotent groups of class 2. We also obtain a necessary condition for the capability of an arbitrary $p$-group of class $k$, and some further results.
A group is called capable if it is a central factor group. We consider the capability of nilpotent products of cyclic groups, and obtain a generalization of a theorem of Baer for the metabelian small class case. The approach is also used to obtain some recent results on the capability of certain nilpotent groups of class 2. We also prove a necessary condition for the capability of an arbitrary p-group of class k, and some further results.
Hans Zassenhaus conjectured that every torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group $G$ is conjugate within the rational group algebra to an element of the form $\pm g$ with $g\in G$. This conjecture has been disproved recently for metabelian groups, by Eisele and Margolis. However it is known to be true for many classes of solvable groups, as for example nilpotent groups, cyclic-by-abelian groups and groups having a cyclic Sylow subgroup with abelian complement. On the other hand, it is not known whether the conjecture holds for supersolvable groups. This paper is a contribution …
In Part I it was shown that if G is a p-group of class k, generated by elements of orders 1<p^{alpha_1} <= ... <= p^{alpha_r}, then a necessary condition for the capability of G is that r>1 and alpha_r <= alpha_{r-1} + [(k-1)/(p-1)]. It was also shown that when G is the k-nilpotent product of the cyclic groups generated by those elements and k=p=2 or k<p, then the given conditions are also sufficient. We make a correction related to the small class case, and extend the sufficiency result to k=p for arbitrary prime p.
We study a three-player variation of the impartial avoidance game introduced by Anderson and Harary. Three players take turns selecting previously-unselected elements of a finite group. The losing player is the one who selects an element that causes the set of jointly-selected elements to be a generating set for the group, with the previous player winning and the remaining player coming in second place. We describe the winning strategy for these games on cyclic, dihedral, and nilpotent groups.
In this article, we present an explicit formula for the $c$th nilpotent multiplier (the Baer invariant with respect to the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most $c\geq 1$) of the $n$th nilpotent product of some cyclic groups $G={\mathbb {Z}}\stackrel{n}{*} ... \stackrel{n}{*}{\mathbb {Z}}\stackrel{n}{*} {\mathbb {Z}}_{r_1}\stackrel{n}{*} ... \stackrel{n}{*}{\mathbb{Z}}_{r_t}$, (m-copies of $\mathbb {Z}$), where $r_{i+1} | r_i$ for $1 \leq i \leq t-1$ and $c \geq n$ such that $ (p,r_1)=1$ for all primes $p$ less than or equal to $n$. Also, we compute the polynilpotent multiplier of the g…
Here we show that a finite nilpotent group is 2-closed if and only if it is either cyclic or a direct product of a generalized quaternion group with a cyclic group of odd order.
This article is devoted to present an explicit formula for the $c$th nilpotent multiplier of nilpotent products of some cyclic groups $G={\bf {Z}}\stackrel{n_1}{*}{\bf {Z}}\stackrel{n_2}{*}...\stackrel{n_{t-1}}{*}{\bf {Z}}\stackrel{n_{t}}{*} {\bf {Z}}_{m_{t+1}}\stackrel{n_{t+1}}{*}{\bf {Z}}_{m_{t+2}}\stackrel{n_{t+2}}{*}...\stackrel{n_{k}}{*}{\bf{Z}}_{m_{k+1}}$, where $m_{i+1} | m_i$ for all $t+1 \leq i \leq k$ and $c \geq n_1\geq n_2\geq ...\geq n_t\geq ...\geq n_{k}$ such that $ (p,m_{t+1})=1$ for all prime $p \leq n_1$. Moreover, we compute the polynilpotent multiplier of the group $G$ with…
In this paper, first we obtain an explicit formula for an outer commutator multiplier of nilpotent products of cyclic groups with respect to the variety $[\mathfrak{N}_{c_1},\mathfrak{N}_{c_2}]$, $\mathfrak{N}_{c}M(\mathbb{Z}\st{n}* \mathbb{Z}\st{n}* ... \st{n}* \mathbb{Z}\st{n}* \mathbb{Z}_{r_1}\st{n}* \mathbb{Z}_{r_2}\st{n}* ... \st{n}* \mathbb{Z}_{r_t})$ where $r_{i+1}\mid r_i \ \ (1\leq i\leq t-1)$, $c_1+c_2+1\geq n$, $2c_2-c_1>2n-2$ and $(p,r_1)=1$ for all prime less than or equal $c_1+c_2+n$, second we give a necessary condition for these groups to be $[\mathfrak{N}_{c_1},\mathfrak{N}_{c…
In this article we show that if ${\cal V}$ is the variety of polynilpotent groups of class row $(c_1,c_2,...,c_s),\ {\mathcal N}_{c_1,c_2,...,c_s}$, and $G\cong{\bf {Z}}_{p^{α_1}}\stackrel{n}{*}{\bf {Z}}_{p^{α_2}}\stackrel{n}{*}...\stackrel{n}{*}{\bf{Z}}_{p^{α_t} }$ is the $n$th nilpotent product of some cyclic $p$-groups, where $c_1\geq n$, $α_1 \geq α_2 \geq...\geq α_t $ and $ (q,p)=1$ for all primes $q$ less than or equal to $n$, then $|{\mathcal N}_{c_1,c_2,...,c_s}M(G)|=p^{d_m}$ if and only if $G\cong{\bf {Z}}_{p}\stackrel{n}{*}{\bf {Z}}_{p}\stackrel{n}{*}...\stackrel{n}{*}{\bf{Z}}_{p }$ …
For every finite $p$-group $G_p$ that is non-cyclic and non-quaternion and every positive integer $\ell\neq p$ that is greater than $2$, we prove the first non-trivial bound on $\ell$-torsion in class group of every $G_p$-extension. More generally, for every nilpotent group $G$ where every Sylow-$p$ subgroup $G_p\subset G$ is non-cyclic and non-quaternion, we prove a non-trivial bound on $\ell$-torsion in class group of every $G$-extension for every integer $\ell>1$.
For a group $G$ and a subgroup $H$ of $G$ this article discusses the normalizer of $H$ in the units of a group ring $RG$. We prove that $H$ is only normalized by the `obvious' units, namely products of elements of $G$ normalizing $H$ and units of $RG$ centralizing $H$, provided $H$ is cyclic. Moreover we show that the normalizers of all subgroups of certain nilpotent and metacyclic groups in the corresponding group rings are as small as possible. These classes contain all dihedral groups, all finite nilpotent groups and all finite groups with all Sylow subgroups being cyclic.
In this paper, using a result of J. Burns and G. Ellis (Math. Z. 226 (1997) 405-28.), we prove that the $c$-nilpotent multiplier (the Baer-invariant with respect to the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most $c$, ${\cal N}_c$.) {\it does commute} with the free product of cyclic groups of mutually coprime order.
We describe the structure of finite groups with $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal or self-normalizing primary cyclic subgroups when $\mathfrak{F}$ is a subgroup-closed saturate superradical formation containing all nilpotent groups. We prove that groups with absolutely $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal or self-normalizing primary cyclic subgroups are soluble when $\mathfrak{F}$ is a subgroup-closed saturate formation containing all nilpotent groups.
In this article, we study geometric properties of nilpotent groups. We find a geometric criterion for the word problem for the finitely generated free nilpotent groups. By geometric criterion, we mean a way to determine whether two words represent the same element in a free nilpotent group of rank $r$ and class $k$ by analyzing their behavior on the Cayley graph of the free nilpotent group of rank $r$ and class $k-1$.
We study groups having the property that every non-cyclic subgroup contains its centralizer. The structure of nilpotent and supersolvable groups in this class is described. We also classify finite $p$-groups and finite simple groups with the above defined property.
In this note, we show that among finite nilpotent groups of a given order or finite groups of a given odd order, the cyclic group of that order has the minimum number of edges in its cyclic subgroup graph. We also conjecture that this holds for arbitrary finite groups.
W.Haebich (Bull. Austral. Math. Soc., 7, 1972, 279-296) presented a formula for the Schur multiplier of a regular product of groups. In this paper first, it is shown that the Baer-invariant of a nilpotent product of groups with respect to the variety of nilpotent groups has a homomorphic image and in finite case a subgroup of Haebich's type. Second a formula will be presented for the Baer-invariant of a nilpotent product of cyclic groups with respect to the variety of nilpotent groups.
A maximal abelian normal subgroup A in a nilpotent group N is self-centralizing. This makes their role an important one in determining the structure of the nilpotent group. For example if A is finite then N is also finite. In the free nilpotent group of class 2 such a group is always a cyclic extension of the center. However this need not be true in an arbitrary finitely generated class two nilpotent group. We show that three generator nilpotent groups violating this condition can be easily found. However in the case when there are four or more generators certain conditions must hold.
Let G be a finite group, p a fixed prime and P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. In this short note we prove that if p is odd, G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order p. For the case p=2, we show that G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order 2 and 4.
We give a detailed description of infinite locally nilpotent groups G such that the index |C_G (x) : <x>| is finite, for every non-normal cyclic subgroup <x> of G. We are also able to extend our analysis to all non-periodic groups satisfying a variation of our condition, where the requirement of finiteness is replaced with a bound.
Refining a result of Erdos and Mays, we give asymptotic series expansions for the functions $A(x)-C(x)$, the count of $n\leq x$ for which every group of order $n$ is abelian (but not all cyclic), and $N(x)-A(x)$, the count of $n\leq x$ for which every group of order $n$ is nilpotent (but not all abelian).
In this paper, we present an explicit structure for the Baer invariant of a free nilpotent group (the $n$-th nilpotent product of the infinite cyclic group, $\textbf{Z}\st{n}* \textbf{Z}\st{n}*... \st{n}*\textbf{Z}$) with respect to the variety of polynilpotent groups of class row $(c,1)$, ${\cal N}_{c,1}$, for all $c > 2n-2$. In particular, an explicit structure of the Baer invariant of a free abelian group with respect to the variety of metabelian groups will be presented.
The description of nilpotent Chernikov $p$-groups with elementary tops is reduced to the study of tuples of skew-symmetric bilinear forms over the residue field $\mathbb{F}_p$. If $p\ne2$ and the bottom of the group only consists of $2$ quasi-cyclic summands, a complete classification is given. We use the technique of quivers with relations.
We present an explicit structure for the Baer invariant of a free $n$th nilpotent group (the $n$th nilpotent product of infinite cyclic groups, $\textbf{Z}\st{n}* \textbf{Z}\st{n}*...\st{n}*\textbf{Z}$) with respect to the variety ${\cal V}$ with the set of words $V=\{[\ga_{c_1+1},\ga_{c_2+1}]\}$, for all $c_1\geq c_2$ and $2c_2-c_1>2n-2$. Also, an explicit formula for the polynilpotent multiplier of a free $n$th nilpotent group is given for any class row $(c_1,c_2,...,c_t)$, where $c_1\geq n$.
We prove that, if a group is relatively hyperbolic, the parabolic subgroups are virtually nilpotent if and only if there exists a hyperbolic space with bounded geometry on which it acts geometrically finitely. This provides, by use of M. Bonk and O. Schramm embedding theorem, a very short proof of the finiteness of asymptotic dimension of relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually nilpotent parabolic subgroups (which is known to imply Novikov conjectures
We show that any soluble group $G$ of type Bredon-$\FP_{\infty}$ with respect to the family of all virtually cyclic subgroups such that centralizers of infinite order elements are of type $\FP_{\infty}$ must be virtually cyclic. To prove this, we first reduce the problem to the case of polycyclic groups and then we show that a polycyclic-by-finite group with finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal virtually cyclic subgroups is virtually cyclic. Finally we discuss refinements of this result: we only impose the property Bredon-$\FP_n$ for some $n \leq 3$ and restrict to abelian-by-nilpotent, …
A generalized Baumslag-Solitar group (GBS group) is a finitely generated group $G$ which acts on a tree with all edge and vertex stabilizers infinite cyclic. We show that Out(G) either contains non-abelian free groups or is virtually nilpotent of class at most 2. It has torsion only at finitely many primes. One may decide algorithmically whether Out(G) is virtually nilpotent or not. If it is, one may decide whether it is virtually abelian, or finitely generated. The isomorphism problem is solvable among GBS groups with Out(G) virtually nilpotent. If $G$ is unimodular (virtually $F_n \times Z$)…
A finitely generated group G is termed parafree if it is residually nilpotent and it has the same isomorphism types of nilpotent quotients as some free group. The two main results of this MSc. Thesis characterise the parafreeness of two constructions, namely amalgamated products with cyclic amalgams and cyclic HNN extensions.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $L_1(G)$ be its poset of cyclic subgroups and consider the quantity $α(G)=\frac{|L_1(G)|}{|G|}$. The aim of this paper is to study the class $\cal{C}$ of finite nilpotent groups having $α(G)=\frac{3}{4}$. We show that if $G$ belongs to this class, then it is a 2-group satisfying certain conditions. Also, we study the appartenance of some classes of finite groups to $\cal{C}$.
A combing is a set of normal forms for a finitely generated group. This article investigates the language-theoretic and geometric properties of combings for nilpotent and polycyclic groups. It is shown that a finitely generated class 2 nilpotent group with cyclic commutator subgroup is real-time combable, as are also all 2 or 3-generated class 2 nilpotent groups, and groups in certain families of nilpotent groups, e.g. the finitely generated Heisenberg groups, groups of unipotent matrices over the integers and the free class 2 nilpotent groups. Further it is shown that any polycyclic-by-finite…
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH of coprime order with cyclic kernel F and complement H such that the fixed point subgroup $C_G(H)$ of the complement is nilpotent of class $c$. It is proved that $G$ has a nilpotent characteristic subgroup of index bounded in terms of $c$, $|C_G(F)|$, and $|FH|$ whose nilpotency class is bounded in terms of $c$ and $|H|$ only. This generalizes the previous theorem of the authors and P. Shumyatsky, where for the case of $C_G(F)=1$ the whole group was proved to be nilpotent of $(c,|H|)$-bounded class. Examples show that…
We associate a graph $Γ_G$ to a non locally cyclic group $G$ (called the non-cyclic graph of $G$) as follows: take $G\backslash Cyc(G)$ as vertex set, where $Cyc(G)=\{x\in G | \left<x,y\right> \text{is cyclic for all} y\in G\}$, and join two vertices if they do not generate a cyclic subgroup. We study the properties of this graph and we establish some graph theoretical properties (such as regularity) of this graph in terms of the group ones. We prove that the clique number of $Γ_G$ is finite if and only if $Γ_G$ has no infinite clique. We prove that if $G$ is a finite nilpotent group and $H$ i…
The bracket map was originally considered for locally compact abelian groups. In this work we extend the study of bracket maps to the noncommutative setting, providing characterizations of bases and frames for cyclic subspaces of the Heisenberg group. We also indicate how to generalize these results to a class of non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups whose irreducible representations are square integrable modulo the center.
The paper is devoted to finding a homomorphic image for the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of the verbal product of a family of groups with respect to a variety ${\mathcal V}$ when ${\mathcal V} \subseteq {\mathcal N}_{c}$ or ${\mathcal N}_{c}\subseteq {\mathcal V}$. Also a structure of the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of a special case of the verbal product, the nilpotent product, of cyclic groups is given. In fact, we present an explicit formula for the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of the $n$th nilpotent product of the group $G= {\bf {Z}}\stackrel{n}{*}...\stackrel{n}{*}{\bf {Z}}\stackrel{n}{*} {\bf {Z}}_…
We study the following question: under what conditions extension of one residually nilpotent group by another residually nilpotent group is residually nilpotent? We prove some sufficient conditions under which this extension is residually nilpotent. Also, we study this question for semi-direct products and, in particular, for extensions of free group by infinite cyclic group: $F_n \rtimes_φ \mathbb{Z}$. We find conditions under which this group is residually nilpotent, find conditions under which this group has long lower central series. In particular, we prove that for $n=2$ the length of the…
Zassenhaus Conjecture for torsion units states that every augmentation one torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group G is conjugate to an element of G in the units of rational group algebra QG. This conjecture has been proved for nilpotent groups, metacyclic groups and some other families of groups. We prove the conjecture for cyclic-by-abelian groups.
For an element $g$ of a group $G$, an Engel sink is a subset $\mathcal{E}(g)$ such that for every $ x\in G $ all sufficiently long commutators $ [x,g,g,\ldots,g] $ belong to $\mathcal{E}(g)$. We conjecture that if $G$ is a profinite group in which every element admits a sink that is a procyclic subgroup, then $G$ is procyclic-by-(locally nilpotent). We prove the conjecture in two cases -- when $G$ is a finite group, or a soluble pro-$p$ group.
Addressing a question of Gromov, we give a rate in Pansu's theorem about the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff metric of a finitely generated nilpotent group equipped with a left-invariant word metric scaled by a factor 1/n towards its asymptotic cone. We show that due to the possible presence of abnormal geodesics in the asymptotic cone, this rate cannot be better than n^{1/2} for general non-abelian nilpotent groups. As a corollary we also get an error term of the form vol(B(n))=cn^d + O(n^{d-2/(3r)}) for the volume of Cayley balls of a nilpotent group with nilpotency class r. We also state a …
Let G be the free product of groups A and B with commuting subgroups H \leqslant A and K \leqslant B, and let C be the class of all finite groups or the class of all finite p-groups. We derive the description of all C-separable cyclic subgroups of G provided this group is residually a C-group. We prove, in particular, that if A, B are finitely generated nilpotent groups and H, K are p'-isolated in the free factors, then all p'-isolated cyclic subgroups of G are separable in the class of all finite p-groups. The same statement is true provided A, B are free and H, K are p'-isolated and cyclic.
We prove that every free metabelian non--cyclic group has a finitely generated isolated subgroup which is not separable in the class of nilpotent groups. As a corollary we prove that for every prime number $p$ an arbitrary free metabelian non--cyclic group has a finitely generated $p'$--isolated subgroup which is not $p$--separable.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function and a dynamical Mertens' theorem for the full $G$-shift for a finitely-generated torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. Using bounds for the M{ö}bius function on the lattice of subgroups of finite index and known subgroup growth estimates, we find a single asymptotic of the shape \[ \sum_{|τ|\le N}\frac{1}{e^{h|τ|}}\sim CN^α(\log N)^β \] where $|τ|$ is the cardinality of the finite orbit $τ$. For the usual orbit-counting function we find upper and lower bounds together with numerical evidence to suggest that for actions of non-cyclic …
We define a pseudometric on the set of all unbounded subsets of a metric space. The Kolmogorov quotient of this pseudometric space is a complete metric space. The definition of the pseudometric is guided by the principle that two unbounded subsets have distance 0 whenever they stay sublinearly close. Based on this pseudometric we introduce and study a general concept of boundaries of metric spaces. Such a boundary is the closure of a subset in the Kolmogorov quotient determined by an arbitrarily chosen family of unbounded subsets. Our interest lies in those boundaries which we get by choosing …
In this paper, we show that all Coleman automorphisms of a finite group with self-central minimal non-trivial characteristic subgroup are inner; therefore the normalizer property holds for these groups. Using our methods we show that the holomorph and wreath product of finite simple groups, among others, have no non-inner Coleman automorphisms. As a further application of our theorems, we provide partial answers to questions raised by M. Hertweck and W. Kimmerle. Furthermore, we characterize the Coleman automorphisms of extensions of a finite nilpotent group by a cyclic $p$-group. Lastly, we n…
This note records some observations concerning geodesic growth functions. If a nilpotent group is not virtually cyclic then it has exponential geodesic growth with respect to all finite generating sets. On the other hand, if a finitely generated group $G$ has an element whose normal closure is abelian and of finite index, then $G$ has a finite generating set with respect to which the geodesic growth is polynomial (this includes all virtually cyclic groups).
Let $G$ be a free product of two groups with amalgamated subgroup, $π$ be either the set of all prime numbers or the one-element set \{$p$\} for some prime number $p$. Denote by $Σ$ the family of all cyclic subgroups of group $G$, which are separable in the class of all finite $π$-groups. Obviously, cyclic subgroups of the free factors, which aren't separable in these factors by the family of all normal subgroups of finite $π$-index of group $G$, the subgroups conjugated with them and all subgroups, which aren't $π^{\prime}$-isolated, don't belong to $Σ$. Some sufficient conditions are obtaine…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of an elementary abelian closure in characteristic not $2$ for biquadratic extensions. We discover that it exists for any non-cyclic extension. We make use of it to obtain a classification for this class of extensions up to isomorphism via descent. This permits us to describe the geometry of this moduli space in group theoretic terms. We also provide two families of polynomials with two parameters that can describe any quartic extensions.
In recent work, Pomerance and Shparlinski have obtained results on the number of cycles in the functional graph of the map $x \mapsto x^a$ in $\mathbb{F}_p^*$. We prove similar results for other families of finite groups. In particular, we obtain estimates for the number of cycles for cyclic groups, symmetric groups, dihedral groups and $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We also show that the cyclic group of order $n$ minimizes the number of cycles among all nilpotent groups of order $n$ for a fixed exponent. Finally, we pose several problems.
