Consider an $N\times n$ random matrix $Y_n=(Y^n_{ij})$ where the entries are given by $Y^n_{ij}=\frac{σ_{ij}(n)}{\sqrt{n}}X^n_{ij}$, the $X^n_{ij}$ being independent and identically distributed, centered with unit variance and satisfying some mild moment assumption. Consider now a deterministic $N\times n$ matrix A_n whose columns and rows are uniformly bounded in the Euclidean norm. Let $Σ_n=Y_n+A_n$. We prove in this article that there exists a deterministic $N\times N$ matrix-valued function T_n(z) analytic in $\mathbb{C}-\mathbb{R}^+$ such that, almost surely, \[\lim_{n\to+\infty,N/n\to c}\biggl(\frac{1}{N}\operatorname {Trace}(Σ_nΣ_n^T-zI_N)^{-1}-\frac{1}{N}\operatorname {Trace}T_n(z)\biggr)=0.\] Otherwise stated, there exists a deterministic equivalent to the empirical Stieltjes transform of the distribution of the eigenvalues of $Σ_nΣ_n^T$. For each n, the entries of matrix T_n(z) are defined as the unique solutions of a certain system of nonlinear functional equations. It is also proved that $\frac{1}{N}\operatorname {Trace} T_n(z)$ is the Stieltjes transform of a probability measure $π_n(dλ)$, and that for every bounded continuous function f, the following convergence holds almost surely \[\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^Nf(λ_k)-\int_0^{\infty}f(λ)π_n(dλ)\mathop {\longrightarrow}_{n\to\infty}0,\] where the $(λ_k)_{1\le k\le N}$ are the eigenvalues of $Σ_nΣ_n^T$. This work is motivated by the context of performance evaluation of multiple inputs/multiple output (MIMO) wireless digital communication channels. As an application, we derive a deterministic equivalent to the mutual information: \[C_n(σ^2)=\frac{1}{N}\mathbb{E}\log \det\biggl(I_N+\frac{Σ_nΣ_n^T}{σ^2}\biggr),\] where $σ^2$ is a known parameter.
On the one hand, we prove that almost surely, for large dimension, there is no eigenvalue of a Hermitian polynomial in independent Wigner and deterministic matrices, in any interval lying at some distance from the supports of a sequence of deterministic probability measures, which is computed with the tools of free probability. On the other hand, we establish the strong asymptotic freeness of independent Wigner matrices and any family of deterministic matrices with strong limiting distribution.
We characterize the limiting fluctuations of traces of several independent Wigner matrices and deterministic matrices under mild conditions. A CLT holds but in general the families are not asymptotically free of second order and the limiting covariance depends on more information on the deterministic matrices than their limiting *-distribution.
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
We introduce a new method to qualify the goodness of fit parameter estimation of compound Wishart models. Our method based on the free deterministic equivalent Z-score, which we introduce in this paper. Furthermore, an application to two dimensional autoregressive moving-average model is provided. Our proposal method is a generalization of statistical hypothesis testing to one dimensional moving average model based on fluctuations of real compound Wishart matrices, which is a recent result by Hasegawa, Sakuma and Yoshida.
We investigate the fluctuations around the mean of the Stieltjes transform of the empirical spectral distribution of any selfadjoint noncommutative polynomial in a Wigner matrix and a deterministic diagonal matrix. We obtain the convergence in distribution to a centred complex Gaussian process whose covariance is expressed in terms of operator-valued subordination functions.
We study sample covariance matrices arising from rectangular random matrices with i.i.d. columns. It was previously known that the resolvent of these matrices admits a deterministic equivalent when the spectral parameter stays bounded away from the real axis. We extend this work by proving quantitative bounds involving both the dimensions and the spectral parameter, in particular allowing it to get closer to the real positive semi-line. As applications, we obtain a new bound for the convergence in Kolmogorov distance of the empirical spectral distributions of these general models. We also appl…
Let $U^N = (U_1^N,\dots, U^N_p)$ be a d-tuple of $N\times N$ independent Haar unitary matrices and $Z^{NM}$ be any family of deterministic matrices in $\mathbb{M}_N(\mathbb{C})\otimes \mathbb{M}_M(\mathbb{C})$. Let $P$ be a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial. In 1998, Voiculescu showed that the empirical measure of the eigenvalues of this polynomial evaluated in Haar unitary matrices and deterministic matrices converges towards a deterministic measure defined thanks to free probability theory. Let now $f$ be a smooth function, the main technical result of this paper is a precise bound of …
Let $X^N$ be a family of $N\times N$ independent GUE random matrices, $Z^N$ a family of deterministic matrices, $P$ a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial, that is for any $N$, $P(X^N)$ is self-adjoint, $f$ a smooth function. We prove that for any $k$, if $f$ is smooth enough, there exist deterministic constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ such that $$ \mathbb{E}\left[\frac{1}{N}\text{Tr}\left( f(P(X^N,Z^N)) \right)\right]\ =\ \sum_{i=0}^k \frac{α_i^P(f,Z^N)}{N^{2i}}\ +\ \mathcal{O}(N^{-2k-2}) .$$ Besides the constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ are built explicitly with the help of free probability. In particular,…
We prove that the number of iterations required to solve a random positive definite linear system with the conjugate gradient algorithm is almost deterministic for large matrices. We treat the case of Wishart matrices $W = XX^*$ where $X$ is $n \times m$ and $n/m \sim d$ for $0 < d < 1$. Precisely, we prove that for most choices of error tolerance, as the matrix increases in size, the probability that the iteration count deviates from an explicit deterministic value tends to zero. In addition, for a fixed iteration count, we show that the norm of the error vector and the norm of the residual c…
Let X_N= (X_1^(N), ..., X_p^(N)) be a family of N-by-N independent, normalized random matrices from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. We state sufficient conditions on matrices Y_N =(Y_1^(N), ..., Y_q^(N)), possibly random but independent of X_N, for which the operator norm of P(X_N, Y_N, Y_N^*) converges almost surely for all polynomials P. Limits are described by operator norms of objects from free probability theory. Taking advantage of the choice of the matrices Y_N and of the polynomials P we get for a large class of matrices the "no eigenvalues outside a neighborhood of the limiting spectru…
We give an algorithm to compute the asymptotics of the eigenvalue distribution of quite general matricial central limit theorems. The central limits are the so called free deterministic equivalents, which in turn are operators whose Cauchy transforms are the solutions to the equations which define very general deterministic equivalents (a la Girko). Our algorithm is based on the one of Belinschi, Mai and Speicher, and the possibility to extend it to more general, operator-valued situations (in particular, to Benaych-Georges rectangular spaces)
We study the spectral norm of matrices M that can be factored as M=BA, where A is a random matrix with independent mean zero entries, and B is a fixed matrix. Under the (4+epsilon)-th moment assumption on the entries of A, we show that the spectral norm of such an m by n matrix M is bounded by \sqrt{m} + \sqrt{n}, which is sharp. In other words, in regard to the spectral norm, products of random and deterministic matrices behave similarly to random matrices with independent entries. This result along with the previous work of M. Rudelson and the author implies that the smallest singular value …
In this paper, we are interested in sequences of q-tuple of N-by-N random matrices having a strong limiting distribution (i.e. given any non-commutative polynomial in the matrices and their conjugate transpose, its normalized trace and its norm converge). We start with such a sequence having this property, and we show that this property pertains if the q-tuple is enlarged with independent unitary Haar distributed random matrices. Besides, the limit of norms and traces in non-commutative polynomials in the enlarged family can be computed with reduced free product construction. This extends resu…
We prove local laws, i.e. optimal concentration estimates for arbitrary products of resolvents of a Wigner random matrix with deterministic matrices in between. We find that the size of such products heavily depends on whether some of the deterministic matrices are traceless. Our estimates correctly account for this dependence and they hold optimally down to the smallest possible spectral scale.
We investigate the fluctuations of linear spectral statistics of a Wigner matrix $W\_N$ deformed by a deterministic diagonal perturbation $D\_N$, around a deterministic equivalent which can be expressed in terms of the free convolution between a semicircular distribution and the empirical spectral measure of $D\_N$. We obtain Gaussian fluctuations for test functions in $\mathcal{C}\_c^7(\mathbb{R})$ ($\mathcal{C}\_c^2(\mathbb{R})$ for fluctuations around the mean). Furthermore, we provide as a tool a general method inspired from Shcherbina and Johansson to extend the convergence of the bias if…
We develop a new method for deriving local laws for a large class of random matrices. It is applicable to many matrix models built from sums and products of deterministic or independent random matrices. In particular, it may be used to obtain local laws for matrix ensembles that are \emph{anisotropic} in the sense that their resolvents are well approximated by deterministic matrices that are not multiples of the identity. For definiteness, we present the method for sample covariance matrices of the form $Q := T X X^* T^*$, where $T$ is deterministic and $X$ is random with independent entries. …
We characterize the limiting second order distributions of certain independent complex Wigner and deterministic matrices using Voiculescu's notions of freeness over the diagonal. If the Wigner matrices are Gaussian, Mingo and Speicher's notion of second order freeness gives a universal rule, in terms of marginal first and second order distribution. We adapt and reformulate this notion for operator-valued random variables in a second order probability space. The Wigner matrices are assumed to be permutation invariant with null pseudo variance and the deterministic matrices to satisfy a restrict…
For each $n$, let $A_n=(σ_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ deterministic matrix and let $X_n=(X_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d. centered entries of unit variance. We study the asymptotic behavior of the empirical spectral distribution $μ_n^Y$ of the rescaled entry-wise product \[ Y_n = \left(\frac1{\sqrt{n}} σ_{ij}X_{ij}\right). \] For our main result we provide a deterministic sequence of probability measures $μ_n$, each described by a family of Master Equations, such that the difference $μ^Y_n - μ_n$ converges weakly in probability to the zero measure. A key feature of our results…
Compressed Sensing aims to capture attributes of $k$-sparse signals using very few measurements. In the standard Compressed Sensing paradigm, the $\m\times \n$ measurement matrix $\A$ is required to act as a near isometry on the set of all $k$-sparse signals (Restricted Isometry Property or RIP). Although it is known that certain probabilistic processes generate $\m \times \n$ matrices that satisfy RIP with high probability, there is no practical algorithm for verifying whether a given sensing matrix $\A$ has this property, crucial for the feasibility of the standard recovery algorithms. In co…
Consider a non-autonomous continuous-time linear system in which the time-dependent matrix determining the dynamics is piecewise constant and takes finitely many values $A_1, \dotsc, A_N$. This paper studies the equality cases between the maximal Lyapunov exponent associated with the set of matrices $\{A_1, \dotsc, A_N\}$, on the one hand, and the corresponding ones for piecewise deterministic Markov processes with modes $A_1, \dotsc, A_N$, on the other hand. A fundamental step in this study consists in establishing a result of independent interest, namely, that any sequence of Markov processe…
We consider spectral properties and the edge universality of sparse random matrices, the class of random matrices that includes the adjacency matrices of the Erdos-Renyi graph model $G(N,p)$. We prove a local law for the eigenvalue density up to the spectral edges. Under a suitable condition on the sparsity, we also prove that the rescaled extremal eigenvalues exhibit GOE Tracy-Widom fluctuations if a deterministic shift of the spectral edge due to the sparsity is included. For the adjacency matrix of the Erdos-Renyi graph this establishes the Tracy-Widom fluctuations of the second largest eig…
We consider the spectrum of additive, polynomially vanishing random perturbations of deterministic matrices, as follows. Let $M_N$ be a deterministic $N\times N$ matrix, and let $G_N$ be a complex Ginibre matrix. We consider the matrix $\mathcal{M}_N=M_N+N^{-γ}G_N$, where $γ>1/2$. With $L_N$ the empirical measure of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{M}_N$, we provide a general deterministic equivalence theorem that ties $L_N$ to the singular values of $z-M_N$, with $z\in \mathbb{C}$. We then compute the limit of $L_N$ when $M_N$ is an upper triangular Toeplitz matrix of finite symbol: if $M_N=\sum_{i=0…
We compute the deterministic approximation of products of Sobolev functions of large Wigner matrices $W$ and provide an optimal error bound on their fluctuation with very high probability. This generalizes Voiculescu's seminal theorem [Voiculescu 1991] from polynomials to general Sobolev functions, as well as from tracial quantities to individual matrix elements. Applying the result to $\exp(\mathrm{i} tW)$ for large $t$, we obtain a precise decay rate for the overlaps of several deterministic matrices with temporally well separated Heisenberg time evolutions; thus we demonstrate the thermalis…
In this work, we give sharp asymptotic equivalents in the small temperature regime of the smallest eigenvalues of the generator of some piecewise deterministic Markov processes (including the ZigZag process and the Bouncy Particle Sampler process) with refreshment rate $α$ on the one-dimensional torus T. These asymptotic equivalents are usually called Eyring-Kramers type formulas in the literature. The case when the refreshment rate $α$ vanishes on T is also considered.
We explore the boundaries of sine kernel universality for the eigenvalues of Gaussian perturbations of large deterministic Hermitian matrices. Equivalently, we study for deterministic initial data the time after which Dyson's Brownian motion exhibits sine kernel correlations. We explicitly describe this time span in terms of the limiting density and rigidity of the initial points. Our main focus lies on cases where the initial density vanishes at an interior point of the support. We show that the time to reach universality becomes larger if the density vanishes faster or if the initial points …
We prove that any finite collection of quadratic forms (overlaps) of general deterministic matrices and eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix has joint Gaussian fluctuations. This can be viewed as the random matrix analogue of the Berry random wave conjecture.
We consider the eigenvalues of a fixed, non-normal matrix subject to a small additive perturbation. In particular, we consider the case when the fixed matrix is a banded Toeplitz matrix, where the bandwidth is allowed to grow slowly with the dimension, and the perturbation matrix is drawn from one of several different random matrix ensembles. We establish a number of non-asymptotic results for the eigenvalues of this model, including a local law and a rate of convergence in Wasserstein distance of the empirical spectral measure to its limiting distribution. In addition, we define the classical…
For random matrix models, the parameter estimation based on the traditional likelihood functions is not straightforward in particular when we have only one sample matrix. We introduce a new parameter optimization method for random matrix models which works even in such a case. The method is based on the spectral distribution instead of the traditional likelihood. In the method, the Cauchy noise has an essential role because the free deterministic equivalent, which is a tool in free probability theory, allows us to approximate the spectral distribution perturbed by Cauchy noises by a smooth and…
Usually the problem of drift estimation for a diffusion process is considered under the hypothesis of ergodicity. It is less often considered under the hypothesis of null-recurrence, simply because there are fewer limit theorems and existing ones do not apply to the whole null-recurrent class. The aim of this paper is to provide some limit theorems for additive functionals and martingales of a general (ergodic or null) recurrent diffusion which would allow us to have a somewhat unified approach to the problem of non-parametric kernel drift estimation in the one-dimensional recurrent case. As a…
Large H-selfadjoint random matrices are considered. The matrix $H$ is assumed to have one negative eigenvalue, hence the matrix in question has precisely one eigenvalue of nonpositive type. It is showed that this eigenvalue converges in probability to a deterministic limit. The weak limit of distribution of the real eigenvalues is investigated as well.
Consider a deterministic self-adjoint matrix X_n with spectral measure converging to a compactly supported probability measure, the largest and smallest eigenvalues converging to the edges of the limiting measure. We perturb this matrix by adding a random finite rank matrix with delocalized eigenvectors and study the extreme eigenvalues of the deformed model. We give necessary conditions on the deterministic matrix X_n so that the eigenvalues converging out of the bulk exhibit Gaussian fluctuations, whereas the eigenvalues sticking to the edges are very close to the eigenvalues of the non-pert…
The model of heavy Wigner matrices generalizes the classical ensemble of Wigner matrices: the sub-diagonal entries are independent, identically distributed along to and out of the diagonal, and the moments its entries are of order 1/N, where N is the size of the matrices. Adjacency matrices of Erdös-Renyi sparse graphs and matrices with properly truncated heavy tailed entries are examples of heavy Wigner matrices. We consider a family X_N of independent heavy Wigner matrices and a family Y_N of arbitrary random matrices, independent of X_N, with a technical condition (e.g. the matrices of Y_N …
We study invertibility of matrices of the form $D+R$ where $D$ is an arbitrary symmetric deterministic matrix, and $R$ is a symmetric random matrix whose independent entries have continuous distributions with bounded densities. We show that $|(D+R)^{-1}| = O(n^2)$ with high probability. The bound is completely independent of $D$. No moment assumptions are placed on $R$; in particular the entries of $R$ can be arbitrarily heavy-tailed.
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
We design a deterministic polynomial time $c^n$ approximation algorithm for the permanent of positive semidefinite matrices where $c=e^{γ+1}\simeq 4.84$. We write a natural convex relaxation and show that its optimum solution gives a $c^n$ approximation of the permanent. We further show that this factor is asymptotically tight by constructing a family of positive semidefinite matrices.
Let $Ψ_n$ be a product of $n$ independent, identically distributed random matrices $M$, with the properties that $Ψ_n$ is bounded in $n$, and that $M$ has a deterministic (constant) invariant vector. Assuming that the probability of $M$ having only the simple eigenvalue 1 on the unit circle does not vanish, we show that $Ψ_n$ is the sum of a fluctuating and a decaying process. The latter converges to zero almost surely, exponentially fast as $n\to\infty$. The fluctuating part converges in Cesaro mean to a limit that is characterized explicitly by the deterministic invariant vector and the spec…
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
Let $A$ and $B$ be two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and let $U$ be an $N$ by $N$ Haar distributed unitary matrix. It is well known that the spectral distribution of the sum $H=A+UBU^*$ converges weakly to the free additive convolution of the spectral distributions of $A$ and $B$, as $N$ tends to infinity. We establish the optimal convergence rate ${\frac{1}{N}}$ in the bulk of the spectrum.
For large random matrices $X$ with independent, centered entries but not necessarily identical variances, the eigenvalue density of $XX^*$ is well-approximated by a deterministic measure on $\mathbb{R}$. We show that the density of this measure has only square and cubic-root singularities away from zero. We also extend the bulk local law in [arXiv:1606.07353] to the vicinity of these singularities.
We consider the quadratic form of a general deterministic matrix on the eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix and prove that it has Gaussian fluctuation for each bulk eigenvector in the large $N$ limit. The proof is a combination of the energy method for the Dyson Brownian motion inspired by [Marcinek, Yau 2020] and our recent multi-resolvent local laws [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020].
We consider real symmetric or complex hermitian random matrices with correlated entries. We prove local laws for the resolvent and universality of the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum. The correlations have fast decay but are otherwise of general form. The key novelty is the detailed stability analysis of the corresponding matrix valued Dyson equation whose solution is the deterministic limit of the resolvent.
