Let $Ψ_n$ be a product of $n$ independent, identically distributed random matrices $M$, with the properties that $Ψ_n$ is bounded in $n$, and that $M$ has a deterministic (constant) invariant vector. Assuming that the probability of $M$ having only the simple eigenvalue 1 on the unit circle does not vanish, we show that $Ψ_n$ is the sum of a fluctuating and a decaying process. The latter converges to zero almost surely, exponentially fast as $n\to\infty$. The fluctuating part converges in Cesaro mean to a limit that is characterized explicitly by the deterministic invariant vector and the spectral data of ${\mathbb E}[M]$ associated to 1. No additional assumptions are made on the matrices $M$; they may have complex entries and not be invertible.
We apply our general results to two classes of dynamical systems: inhomogeneous Markov chains with random transition matrices (stochastic matrices), and random repeated interaction quantum systems. In both cases, we prove ergodic theorems for the dynamics, and we obtain the form of the limit states.
The ergodic unitarily invariant measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices have been classified by Pickrell and Olshanski-Vershik. The much-studied complex inverse Wishart measures form a projective family, thus giving rise to a unitarily invariant measure on infinite positive-definite matrices. In this paper we completely solve the corresponding problem of ergodic decomposition for this measure.
The ergodic decomposition of a family of Hua-Pickrell measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices is studied. Firstly, we show that the ergodic components of Hua-Pickrell probability measures have no Gaussian factors, this extends a result of Alexei Borodin and Grigori Olshanski. Secondly, we show that the sequence of asymptotic eigenvalues of Hua-Pickrell random matrices is balanced in certain sense and has a "principal value" coincides with the $γ_1$ parameter of ergodic components. This allow us to complete the program of Borodin and Olshanski on the description of the ergodic deco…
We study a class of Hermitian random matrices which includes and generalizes Wigner matrices, heavy-tailed random matrices, and sparse random matrices such as the adjacency matrices of Erdos-Renyi random graphs with p ~ 1/N. Our NxN random matrices have real entries which are i.i.d. up to symmetry. The distributions may depend on N, however, the sums of rows must converge in distribution; it is then well-known that the limiting distributions are infinitely divisible. We show that a limiting empirical spectral distribution (LSD) exists, and via local weak convergence of associated graphs, the L…
We introduce and study a 2-parameter family of unitarily invariant probability measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices. We show that the decomposition of a measure from this family on ergodic components is described by a determinantal point process on the real line. The correlation kernel for this process is explicitly computed. At certain values of parameters the kernel turns into the well-known sine kernel which describes the local correlation in Circular and Gaussian Unitary Ensembles. Thus, the random point configuration of the sine process is interpreted as the random set of …
We solve infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (ISDEs) describing an infinite number of Brownian particles interacting via two-dimensional Coulomb potentials. The equilibrium states of the associated unlabeled stochastic dynamics are the Ginibre random point field and Dyson's measures, which appear in random matrix theory. To solve the ISDEs we establish an integration by parts formula for these measures. Because the long-range effect of two-dimensional Coulomb potentials is quite strong, the properties of Brownian particles interacting with two-dimensional Coulomb potentials …
Products of $M$ i.i.d. non-Hermitian random matrices of size $N \times N$ relate Gaussian fluctuation of Lyapunov and stability exponents in dynamical systems (finite $N$ and large $M$) to local eigenvalue universality in random matrix theory (finite $M$ and large $N$). The remaining task is to study local eigenvalue statistics as $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity simultaneously, which lies at the heart of understanding two kinds of universal patterns. For products of i.i.d. complex Ginibre matrices, truncated unitary matrices and spherical ensembles, as $M+N\to \infty$ we prove that local statisti…
Neretin constructed an analogue of the Hua measures on the infinite $p$-adic matrices $Mat\left(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{Q}_p\right)$. Bufetov and Qiu classified the ergodic measures on $Mat\left(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{Q}_p\right)$ that are invariant under the natural action of $GL(\infty,\mathbb{Z}_p)\times GL(\infty,\mathbb{Z}_p)$. In this paper we solve the problem of ergodic decomposition for the $p$-adic Hua measures introduced by Neretin. We prove that the probability measure governing the ergodic decomposition has an explicit expression which identifies it with a Hall-Littlewood measure on partit…
Let $F$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean locally compact field such that the characteristic $\mathrm{ch}(F)\ne 2$ and let $\mathcal{O}_F$ be the ring of integers in $F$. The main results of this paper are Theorem 1.2 that classifies ergodic probability measures on the space $\mathrm{Skew}(\mathbb{N}, F)$ of infinite skew-symmetric matrices with respect to the natural action of the group $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$ and Theorem 1.4, that gives an unexpected natural correspondence between the set of $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$-invariant Borel probability measures on $\mathrm{Sym}…
We prove a sharp $\sqrt{N}$ transition for the infinitesimal distribution of a periodically banded GUE matrix. For band widths $b_N = Ω(\sqrt{N})$, we further prove that our model is infinitesimally free from the matrix units and the normalized all-ones matrix. Our results allow us to extend previous work of Shlyakhtenko on finite-rank perturbations of Wigner matrices in the infinitesimal framework. For finite-rank perturbations of our model, we find outliers at the classical positions from the deformed Wigner ensemble.
Let $O(\infty)$ and $U(\infty)$ be the inductively compact infinite orthogonal group and infinite unitary group respectively. The classifications of ergodic probability measures with respect to the natural group action of $O(\infty)\times O(m)$ on $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb{N}\times m, \mathbb{R})$ and that of $U(\infty)\times U(m)$ on $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb{N}\times m, \mathbb{C})$ are due to Olshanski. The original proofs for these results are based on the asymptotic representation theory. In this note, by applying the Vershik-Kerov method, we propose a simple method for obtaining these two classi…
Let $F$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean locally compact field and $\mathcal{O}_F$ the ring of integers in $F$. The main results of this paper are Theorem 1.2 that classifies ergodic probability measures on the space $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb{N}, F)$ of infinite matrices with enties in $F$ with respect to the natural action of the group $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F) \times \mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$ and Theorem 1.6 that, for non-dyadic $F$, classifies ergodic probability measures on the space $\mathrm{Sym}(\mathbb{N}, F)$ of infinite symmetric matrices with respect to the natural act…
Pickrell has fully characterized the unitarily invariant probability measures on infinite Hermitian matrices, and an alternative proof of this classification has been found by Olshanski and Vershik. Borodin and Olshanski deduced from this proof that under any of these invariant measures, the extreme eigenvalues of the minors, divided by the dimension, converge almost surely. In this paper, we prove that one also has a weak convergence for the eigenvectors, in a sense which is made precise. After mapping Hermitian to unitary matrices via the Cayley transform, our result extends a convergence pr…
If a left-product $M_n... M_1$ of square complex matrices converges to a nonnull limit when $n\to\infty$ and if the $M_n$ belong to a finite set, it is clear that there exists an integer $n_0$ such that the $M_n$, $n\ge n_0$, have a common right-eigenvector $V$ for the eigenvalue 1. Now suppose that the $M_n$ are nonnegative and that $V$ has positive entries. Denoting by $Δ$ the diagonal matrix whose diagonal entries are the entries of $V$, the stochastic matrices $S_n=Δ^{-1}M_nΔ$ satisfy $M_n... M_{n_0}=ΔS_n... S_{n_0}Δ^{-1}$, so the problem of the convergence of $M_n... M_1$ reduces to the o…
The inverse problem of fractional Brownian motion and other Gaussian processes with stationary increments involves inverting an infinite hermitian positively definite Toeplitz matrix (a matrix that has equal elements along its diagonals). The problem of inverting Toeplitz matrices is interesting on its own and has various applications in physics, signal processing, statistics, etc. A large body of literature has emerged to study this question since the seminal work of Szegö on Toeplitz forms in 1920's. In this paper we obtain, for the first time, an explicit general formula for the inverse of …
The four major asymptotic level density laws of random matrix theory may all be showcased though their Jacobi parameter representation as having a bordered Toeplitz form. We compare and contrast these laws, completing and exploring their representations in one place. Inspired by the bordered Toeplitz form, we propose an algorithm for the finite moment problem by proposing a solution whose density has a bordered Toeplitz form.
We consider the ergodicity and consensus problem for a discrete-time linear dynamic model driven by random stochastic matrices, which is equivalent to studying these concepts for the product of such matrices. Our focus is on the model where the random matrices have independent but time-variant distribution. We introduce a new phenomenon, the infinite flow, and we study its fundamental properties and relations with the ergodicity and consensus. The central result is the infinite flow theorem establishing the equivalence between the infinite flow and the ergodicity for a class of independent ran…
We study the $k$-largest eigenvalues of heavy-tailed sample covariance matrices of the form $\bX\bX^\T$ in an asymptotic framework, where the dimension of the data and the sample size tend to infinity. To this end, we assume that the rows of $\bX$ are given by independent copies of some stationary process with regularly varying marginals with index $α\in(0,2)$ satisfying large deviation and mixing conditions. We apply these general results to stochastic volatility and GARCH processes.
Let $M_n = (ξ_{ij})_{1 \leq i,j \leq n}$ be a real symmetric random matrix in which the upper-triangular entries $ξ_{ij}, i<j$ and diagonal entries $ξ_{ii}$ are independent. We show that with probability tending to 1, $M_n$ has no repeated eigenvalues. As a corollary, we deduce that the Erd{\H o}s-Renyi random graph has simple spectrum asymptotically almost surely, answering a question of Babai.
In a previous paper (called "Rectangular random matrices. Related covolution"), we defined, for $λ\in [0,1]$, the rectangular free convolution with ratio $λ$. Here, we investigate the related notion of infinite divisiblity, which happens to be closely related to the classical infinite divisibility: there exists a bijection between the set of classical symmetric infinitely divisible distributions and the set of distributions infinitely divisible with respect to this convolution, which preserves limit theorems. We give an interpretation of this correspondance in term of random matrices: we const…
We consider a generalized model of repeated quantum interactions, where a system $\mathcal{H}$ is interacting in a random way with a sequence of independent quantum systems $\mathcal{K}_n, n \geq 1$. Two types of randomness are studied in detail. One is provided by considering Haar-distributed unitaries to describe each interaction between $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{K}_n$. The other involves random quantum states describing each copy $\mathcal{K}_n$. In the limit of a large number of interactions, we present convergence results for the asymptotic state of $\mathcal{H}$. This is achieved by st…
We construct a random matrix model for the bijection Ψbetween clas- sical and free infinitely divisible distributions: for every d\geq1, we associate in a quite natural way to each *-infinitely divisible distribution μa distribution P_d^μ on the space of d\times d Hermitian matrices such that P_d^μP_d^ν=P_d^{μ*ν}. The spectral distribution of a random matrix with distribution P_d^μ converges in probability to Ψ(μ) when d tends to +\infty. It gives, among other things, a new proof of the almost sure convergence of the spectral distribution of a matrix of the GUE and a projection model for the M…
