It is known that the algebraic \deRham cohomology group $\hDR{i}(X_0/\Q)$ of a nonsingular variety $X_0/\Q$ has the same rank as the rational singular cohomology group $\h^i\sing(\Xh;\Q)$ of the complex manifold $\Xh$ associated to the base change $X_0\times_{\Q}\C$. However, we do not have a natural isomorphism $\hDR{i}(X_0/\Q)\iso\h^i\sing(\Xh;\Q)$. Any choice of such an isomorphism produces certain integrals, so called periods, which reveal valuable information about $X_0$. The aim of this thesis is to explain these classical facts in detail. Based on an approach of Kontsevich, different definitions of a period are compared and their properties discussed. Finally, the theory is applied to some examples. These examples include a representation of $ζ(2)$ as a period and a variation of mixed Hodge structures used by Goncharov.
Using local cohomology and algebraic D-Modules, we generalize a comparison theorem between relative de Rham cohomology and Dwork cohomology due to N. Katz, A. Adolphson and S. Sperber.
We prove that a differential field K is algebraically closed and Picard-Vessiot closed if and only if the differential Galois cohomology group H^1_\partial(K,G) is trivial for any linear differential algebraic group G over K. We give an application to the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory.
We compute the first, second, third, and fifth rational cohomology groups of the moduli space of stable n-pointed genus g curves, for all g and n, using (mostly) algebro-geometric techniques.
We prove that cohomology and base change holds for algebraic stacks, generalizing work of Brochard in the tame case. We also show that Hom-spaces on algebraic stacks are represented by abelian cones, generalizing results of Grothendieck, Brochard, Olsson, Lieblich, and Roth--Starr. To accomplish all of this, we prove that a wide class of Ext-functors in algebraic geometry are coherent (in the sense of M. Auslander).
Building up on work of Epstein, May and Drury, we define and investigate the mod $p$ Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of smooth algebraic stacks over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We then compute the action of the operations on the de Rham cohomology of classifying stacks for finite groups, connected reductive groups for which $p$ is not a torsion prime, and (special) orthogonal groups when $p=2$.
After works by Katz, Monsky, and Adolphson-Sperber, a comparison theorem between relative de Rham cohomology and Dwork cohomology is established in a paper by Dimca-Maaref-Sabbah-Saito in the framework of algebraic D-modules. We propose here an alternative proof of this result. The use of Fourier transform techniques makes our approach more functorial.
We show that the weight 0 part of the first cohomology of a complex algebraic variety $X$ is a topological invariant, and give an explicit description of its dimension using a topological construction of the normalization of $X$, where $X$ can be reducible, but must be equidimensional. The first assertion is known in the $X$ compact case by A. Weber, where intersection cohomology is used. Note that the weight 1 or 2 part of the first cohomology is not a topological (or even analytic) invariant in the non-compact case by Serre's example.
Using the theory of cohomology support locus, we give a necessary condition for the Albanese map of a smooth projective surface being a submersion. More precisely, assuming the cohomology support locus of any finite abelian cover of a smooth projective surface consists of finitely many points, we prove that the surface has trivial first Betti number, or is a ruled surface of genus one, or is an abelian surface.
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…
We show that the etale cohomology (with compact supports) of an algebraic variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field has the canonical weight filtration $W$, and prove that the middle weight part of the cohomology with compact supports of $X$ is a subspace of the intersection cohomology of a compactification $X'$ of X, or equivalently, the middle weight part of the (so-called) Borel-Moore homology of $X$ is a quotient of the intersection cohomology of $X'$. We are informed that this has been shown by A. Weber in the case $X$ is proper (and $k=\bC$) using a theorem of G. Barthel, J.-P. Bras…
Let X be a smooth complex algebraic variety with the Zariski topology, and let Y be the underlying complex manifold with the complex topology. Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem asserts that the singular cohomology of Y with complex coefficients can be computed from the complex of sheaves of algebraic differential forms on X. This article gives an elementary proof of Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem, elementary in the sense that we use only tools from standard textbooks as well as Serre's FAC and GAGA papers.
Let S be an essentially smooth scheme over a field of characteristic exponent c. Let MGL and HZ denote the algebraic cobordism spectrum and the motivic cohomology spectrum over S, respectively. We show that the canonical map MGL/(a1, a2, ...) -> HZ induced by the additive orientation of motivic cohomology becomes an equivalence after inverting c. As an application, we prove the convergence of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for all Z[1/c]-local Landweber exact motivic spectra.

These are lecture notes from the IMPANGA 2010 Summer School. The lectures survey some of the main features of equivariant cohomology at an introductory level. The first part is an overview, including basic definitions and examples. In the second lecture, I discuss one of the most useful aspects of the theory: the possibility of localizing at fixed points without losing information. The third lecture focuses on Grassmannians, and describes some recent positivity results about their equivariant cohomology rings.
Let X be a smooth affine variety over a field k of characteristic 0 and T(X) be the Lie algebra of regular vector fields on X. We compute the Lie algebra cohomology of T(X) with coefficients in k. The answer is given in topological terms relative to any embedding of k into complex numbers and is analogous to the classical Gelfand-Fuks computation for smooth vector fields on a C-infinity manifold. Unlike the C-infinity case, our setup is purely algebraic: no topology on T(X) is present. The proof is based on the techniques of factorization algebras, both in algebro-geometric and topological con…
A horospherical variety is a normal algebraic variety where a connected reductive algebraic group acts with an open orbit isomorphic to a torus bundle over a flag variety. In this article we study the cohomology of line bundles on complete horospherical varieties.
We present several approaches to equivariant intersection cohomology. We show that for a complete algebraic variety acted by a connected algebraic group $G$ it is a free module over $H^*(BG)$. The result follows from the decomposition theorem or from a weight argument.
Let GO(2n) be the general orthogonal group (the group of similitudes) over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2. We determine the etale cohomology ring with mod 2 coefficients of the algebraic stack BGO(2n). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring of the classifying space BGO(2n) of the complex Lie group GO(2n) in terms of explicit generators and relations. We extend their results to the algebraic category. The chief ingredients in this are (i) an extension to etale cohomology of an idea of Totaro, originally used …
Thomason's étale descent theorem for Bott periodic algebraic $K$-theory \cite{aktec} is generalized to any $MGL$ module over a regular Noetherian scheme of finite dimension. Over arbitrary Noetherian schemes of finite dimension, this generalizes the analog of Thomason's theorem for Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory. This is achieved by amplifying the effects from the case of motivic cohomology, using the slice spectral sequence in the case of the universal example of algebraic cobordism. We also obtain integral versions of these statements: Bousfield localization at étale motivic cohomology is the …
The purpose of this article is to investigate the intersection cohomology for algebraic varieties with torus action. Given an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$, one of our result determines the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of any normal projective $\mathbb{T}$-variety admitting an algebraic curve as global quotient. The calculation is expressed in terms of a combinatorial description involving a divisorial fan which is the analogous of the defining fan of a toric variety. Our main tool to obtain this computation is a description of the decomposition theorem in this context.
Atiyah and Hirzebruch gave examples ofeven degree torsion classes in the singularcohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold, which arenot Poincaré dual to an algebraiccycle. We notice that the order ofthese classes are small comparedto the dimension of the manifold. However, building upon a construction ofKollàr, one can provide such examples witharbitrary high prime order, the dimension being fixed. This method alsoprovides examples of torsion algebraiccycles, which are non trivial in the Griffiths' groups, and lie in a arbitrary high level of the H.Saito filtration onChow groups.
We introduce the notion of an algebraic cocycle as the algebraic analogue of a map to an Eilenberg-MacLane space. Using these cocycles we develop a ``cohomology theory" for complex algebraic varieties. The theory is bigraded, functorial, and admits Gysin maps. It carries a natural cup product and a pairing to $L$-homology. Chern classes of algebraic bundles are defined in the theory. There is a natural transformation to (singular) integral cohomology theory that preserves cup products. Computations in special cases are carried out. On a smooth variety it is proved that there are algebraic cocy…
Let $\MC$ be the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank 2 and fixed determinant of odd degree, over a smooth projective curve $C$. This paper identifies the algebraic cohomology ring $\HA^*(\MC)$, i.e. the subring of the rational cohomology ring $H^*(\MC;\QQ)$ spanned by the fundamental classes of algebraic cycles, in terms of the algebraic cohomology ring of the Jacobian $\JC$.
In this paper, we define a certain Hodge-theoretic structure for an arbitrary variety X over the complex number field by using the theory of mixed Hodge module due to Morihiko Saito. We call it an arithmetic Hodge structure of X. It is shown that extension groups of arithmetic Hodge structure do not vanish even for degree $\geq2$. Moreover, we define higher Abel-Jacobi maps from Bloch's higher Chow groups of X to these extension groups. These maps essentially involve the classical Abel-Jacobi maps by Weil and Griffiths, and Mumford's infinitesimal invariants of 0-cycles on surfaces.
A general method of computing cohomology groups of the space of nonsingular algebraic hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in $CP^n$ is described. Using this method, rational cohomology groups of such spaces with $n=2, d \le 4$ and $n=3=d$ are calculated.
Let K be a finite extension of Q_p and X a smooth projective variety over K. We define the notion of totally degenerate reduction of such an X and the associated Chow complexes of the special fibre of a suitable regular proper model of X over the ring of integers of K. If X has such reduction, we then show that for all l, the Q_l-adic etale cohomology of X has a filtration whose graded quotients are isomorphic, as Galois modules, to the tensor product of a finite dimensional Q-vector space (with a finite unramified action of Galois) with twists of Q_l by the cyclotomic character.
The p-cohomology of an algebraic variety in characteristic p lies naturally in the category $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ of coherent complexes of graded modules over the Raynaud ring (Ekedahl-Illusie-Raynaud). We study homological algebra in this category. When the base field is finite, our results provide relations between the the absolute cohomology groups of algebraic varieties, log varieties, algebraic stacks, etc. and the special values of their zeta functions. These results provide compelling evidence that $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ is the correct target for p-cohomology in characteristic p.
We study the topology of some simple infinite dimensional singularities arising from spaces of \emph{algebraic formal loops}. We prove that in some simple cases the natural analogue of nearby cycles cohomology for a function on the loop space vanishes, and show further that a suitably renormalized version of the above cohomology produces a simple (non-zero) result.
In this paper we show that in a stable range the cohomology of the space of regular algebraic sections of a line bundle $\mathscr{L}$on a curve $X$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of the space of regular $C^{\infty}$sections of the same line bundle.
In this paper we present algorithms that compute certain local cohomology modules associated to a ring of polynomials containing the rational numbers. In particular we are able to compute the local cohomological dimension of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero. Our approach is based on the theory of D-modules.
We give algorithms for the computation of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of open and closed algebraic sets inside projective space or other smooth complex toric varieties. The methods, which are based on Gröbner basis computations in rings of differential operators, can also be used to compute the cohomology of intersections of smooth closed and open subsets, and in certain situations the cup-product structure. We give some examples which were carried out with the help of \Mtwo.
We describe a method to construct indecomposable classes in Bloch's higher Chow group $CH^2(X,1)$ on algebraic surfaces over the complex numbers via transcendental methods and apply it to obtain examples on K3-surfaces and some surfaces of general type.
Let $\Bbbk$ be a field of characteristic 0. Let $X$ be a smooth complete intersection over $k$ of dimension $n-k$ in the projective space $\mathbf{P}^n_{k}$, for given positive integers $n$ and $k$. When $k=\mathbb{C}$, Terasoma (\cite{Ter90}) and Konno (\cite{Ko91}) provided an explicit representative (in terms of differential forms) of a basis for the primitive middle-dimensional algebraic de Rham cohomology $H_{dR,\operatorname{prim}}^{n-k}(X;\mathbb{C})$. Later Dimca constructed another explicit representative of a basis of $H_{dR,\operatorname{prim}}^{n-k}(X;\mathbb{C})$ in \cite{Dim95}. …
The SL(2,C)-representation varieties of punctured surfaces form natural families parameterized by holonomies at the punctures. In this paper, we first compute the loci where these varieties are singular for the cases of one-holed and two-holed tori and the four-holed sphere. We then compute the de Rham cohomologies of these varieties of the one-holed torus and the four-holed sphere when the varieties are smooth via the Grothendieck theorem. Furthermore, we produce the explicit Gauss-Manin connection on the natural family of the smooth SL(2,C)-representation variety of the one-holed torus.
We define the algebraic elliptic cohomology theory coming from Krichever's elliptic genus as an oriented cohomology theory on smooth varieties over an arbitrary perfect field. We show that in the algebraic cobordism ring with rational coefficients, the ideal generated by differences of classical flops coincides with the kernel of Krichever's elliptic genus. This generalizes a theorem of B. Totaro in the complex analytic setting.
It is proved that on nilmanifolds with abelian complex structure, there exists a canonically constructed non-trivial holomorphic Poisson structure. We identify the necessary and sufficient condition for its associated cohomology to be isomorphic to the cohomology associated to trivial (zero) holomorphic Poisson structure. We also identify a sufficient condition for this isomorphism to be at the level of Gerstenhaber algebras.
The manuscript is an overview of the motivations and foundations lying behind Voevodsky's ideas of constructing categories similar to the ordinary topological homotopy categories. The objects of these categories are strictly related to algebraic varieties and preserve some of their algebraic invariants.
Following an idea of Totaro, we prove that the classical integral cycle class map from algebraic cycles to étale cohomology factors through a quotient of $\ell$-adic étale cobordism over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This shows that there is a strong topological obstruction for cohomology classes to be algebraic and that examples of Atiyah, Hirzebruch and Totaro also work in positive characteristic.
We review the Hodge theory of some classic examples from mirror symmetry, with an emphasis on what is intrinsic to the A-model, and on interesting open questions and problems. In particular, we illustrate the construction of a quantum Z-local system on the cohomology of the total space of the canonical bundle of P^2, and suggest how this should be related to the higher algebraic cycles studied in our 2011 CNTP article "Algebraic K-theory of toric hypersurfaces".

In this paper, for any Milnor hypersurface we find the largest dimension of effective algebraic torus actions on it. The proof of the corresponding theorem is based on the computation of the automorphism group for any Milnor hypersurface. We find all generalised Buchstaber-Ray and Ray hypersurfaces that are toric varieties. We compute the Betti numbers of these hypersurfaces and describe their integral singular cohomology rings in terms of the cohomology of the corresponding ambient varieties.
We examine various versions of oriented cohomology and Borel-Moore homology theories in algebraic geometry and put these two together in the setting of an "oriented duality theory", a generalization of Bloch-Ogus twisted duality theory. This combines and exends work of Panin and Mocanasu. We apply this to give a Borel-Moore homology version $MGL'_{*,*}$ of Voevodsky's $MGL^{*,*}$-theory, and a natural map $\vartheta:Ω_*\to MGL'_{2*,*}$, where $Ω_*$ is the algebraic cobordism theory defined by Levine-Morel. We conjecture that $\vartheta$ is an isomorphism and describe a program for proving this…
Let $G$ be a group scheme of finite type over a field, and consider the cohomology ring $H^*(G)$ with coefficients in the structure sheaf. We show that $H^*(G)$ is a free module of finite rank over its component of degree 0, and is the exterior algebra of its component of degree 1. When $G$ is connected, we determine the Hopf algebra structure of $H^*(G)$.
We develop a sheaf cohomology theory of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed non-trivially valued non-archimedean field $K$ based on Hrushovski-Loeser's stable completion. In parallel, we develop a sheaf cohomology of definable subsets in o-minimal expansions of the tropical semi-group $Γ_\infty$, where $Γ$ denotes the value group of $K$. For quasi-projective varieties, both cohomologies are strongly related by a deformation retraction of the stable completion homeomorphic to a definable subset of $Γ_\infty$. In both contexts, we show that the corresponding cohomology theory satisf…
