Atiyah and Hirzebruch gave examples ofeven degree torsion classes in the singularcohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold, which arenot Poincaré dual to an algebraiccycle. We notice that the order ofthese classes are small comparedto the dimension of the manifold. However, building upon a construction ofKollàr, one can provide such examples witharbitrary high prime order, the dimension being fixed. This method alsoprovides examples of torsion algebraiccycles, which are non trivial in the Griffiths' groups, and lie in a arbitrary high level of the H.Saito filtration onChow groups.
In this paper we prove the 2-local part of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjectures on tosion in motivic cohomology. In particular we prove the Milnor conjecture relating Milnor's K-theory and the Galois cohomology with Z/2-coefficients. This paper is a new version of the previously distributed preprint "The Milnor Conjecture".
We prove that each irreducible component of the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems over a compact Kähler manifold contains at least one torsion point. This generalizes a theorem of Simpson for smooth complex projective varieties. An immediate consequence is the conjecture of Beauville and Catanese for compact Kähler manifolds. We also provide an example of a compact Kähler manifold, whose cohomology jump loci can not be realized by any smooth complex projective variety.
We study cohomology support loci of regular holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties, and obtain conditions under which each irreducible component of such a locus contains a torsion point. One case is that both the D-module and the corresponding perverse sheaf are defined over a number field; another case is that the D-module underlies a grade-polarizable mixed Hodge module with a Z-structure. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for Simpson's result that Green-Lazarsfeld sets are translates of subtori by torsion points.
We give an explicit presentation with generators and relations of the quantum cohomology ring of the blow-up of a projective space along a linear subspace.
In this paper, we attempt to determine the quantum cohomology of projective bundles over the projective space P^n. In contrast to the previous examples, the relevant moduli spaces in our case frequently do not have expected dimensions. It makes the calculation more difficult. We overcome this difficulty by using excessive intersection theory.
We develop a new cohomology theory in characteristic p>0, the so called F-gauge cohomology, a cohomology with values in the category of so-called F-gauges, which refines the cristalline cohomology. In this first paper we mainly discuss the theory for smooth projective varieties over perfect fields of charatceristic p. We also compare our theory with other existing structures like the F-zips of Moonen and Wedhorn and the displays of Langer and Zink.
To a smooth projective variety $X$ whose Chow group of $0$-cycles is $\mathbf Q$-universally trivial one can associate its torsion index $\mathrm{Tor}(X)$, the smallest multiple of the diagonal appearing in a cycle-theoretic decomposition à la Bloch-Srinivas. We show that $\mathrm{Tor}(X)$ is the exponent of the torsion in the Néron-Severi-group of $X$ when $X$ is a surface over an algebraically closed field $k$, up to a power of the exponential characteristic of $k$.
Given an elliptic fibration $f \colon X \to S$ over the spectrum of a complete discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field, we use a Hochschild--Serre spectral sequence to express the torsion in $R^1f_\ast \mathscr{O}_X$ as the first group cohomology $H^1(G,H^0(S^\prime, \mathscr{O}_{S^\prime}))$. Here, $G$ is the Galois group of the maximal extension $K^\prime / K$ such that the normalization of $X \times_S S^\prime$ induces an étale covering of $X$, where $S^\prime$ is the normalization of $S$ in $K^\prime$. The case where $S$ is a Dedekind scheme is easily reduced to the…
In an earlier paper we conjectured a relation between the quantum $\mathcal D$-modules of a smooth variety $X$ and the projectivisation of a direct sum of line bundles over it. In this paper we prove the conjecture when $X$ is a complete intersection in a toric variety. We also use the conjecture to show that the relations of the small quantum cohomology ring of $X$ that come from differential operators lift to the projective bundle. The basic cohomology relation of the projective bundle deforms to a relation in the small quantum cohomology.
We give a complete classification of Q_l-cohomology projective planes with isolated ADE-singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle in odd characteristic. This leads to a beautiful relation with certain Enriques surfaces which parallels the situation in characteristic zero, yet displays intriguing subtleties.
We construct monads for framed torsion-free sheaves on blow-ups of the complex projective plane at finitely many distinct points. Using these monads we prove that the moduli space of such sheaves is a smooth algebraic variety. Moreover we construct monads for families of such sheaves parameterized by a noetherian scheme S of finite type. A universal monad on the moduli space is introduced and used to prove that the moduli space is fine.
In this paper, we study the divisor theory of the Simpson moduli space of semistable sheaves of dimension 1 on the projective plane. We prove that these spaces are all Mori dream spaces, and calculate their nef cones. We also study the effective cones of these spaces for most choices of numerical invariants. As a consequence, we work out precisely when two such spaces are isomorphic.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
Deligne's conjecture is the Lefschetz trace formula for correspondences defined over a finite field. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement of Deligne's conjecture with respect to $p^n$-torsion étale cohomology under certain conditions, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field.
We prove that the cohomology jump loci in the space of rank one local systems over a smooth quasi-projective variety are finite unions of torsion translates of subtori. The main ingredients are a recent result of Dimca-Papadima, some techniques introduced by Simpson, together with properties of the moduli space of logarithmic connections constructed by Nitsure and Simpson.
We compute Hochschild cohomology of projective hypersurfaces starting from the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex of the (restricted) structure sheaf. We are particularly interested in the second cohomology group and its relation with deformations. We show that a projective hypersurface is smooth if and only if the classical HKR decomposition holds for this group. In general, the first Hodge component describing scheme deformations has an interesting inner structure corresponding to the various ways in which first order deformations can be realized: deforming local multiplications, deforming restrict…
The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. We show that the conjecture is true for some smooth projective surfaces with Picard number 2.
We present a reconstruction theorem for Fano vector bundles on projective space which recovers the small quantum cohomology for the projectivisation of the bundle from a small number of low-degree Gromov--Witten invariants. We provide an extended example in which we calculate the quantum cohomology of a certain Fano 9-fold and deduce from this, using the quantum Lefschetz theorem, the quantum period sequence for a Fano 3-fold of Picard rank 2 and degree 24. This example is new, and is important for the Fanosearch programme.
We relate the torsion part of the Abel-Jacobi kernel in the Griffiths group of 1-cycles to a birational invariant analogous to the degree 4 unramified cohomology and an invariant associated to the generalized Hodge conjecture in degree 2dim(X)-3. We also describe in terms of H-cohomology the Griffiths group of 1-cycles and the group of torsion cycles algebraically equivalent to zero of arbitrary dimension.
In this paper, we show that the motive of the quaternionic Grassmannian $HP^n$ (as defined by I. Panin and C. Walter) splits in the category of effective MW-motives (as defined by B. Calmès, F. Déglise and J. Fasel). Moreover, we extend this result to an arbitrary symplectic bundle, obtaining the so-called quaternionic projective bundle theorem. Finally, we give the Gysin triangle in MW-motivic cohomology.
In their paper "Quantum cohomology of projective bundles over $P^n$" (Trans. Am. Math. Soc. (1998)350:9 3615-3638) Z.Qin and Y.Ruan introduce interesting techniques for the computation of the quantum ring of manifolds which are projectivized bundles over projective spaces; in particular, in the case of splitting bundles they prove under some restrictions the formula of Batyrev about the quantum ring of toric manifolds. Here we prove the formula of Batyrev on the quantum Chern-Leray equation for a large class of splitting bundles.
Given two elliptic curves, each of which is associated with a projection map that identifies opposite elements with respect to the natural group structure, we investigate how their corresponding projective images of torsion points intersect.
In this article, we study the twisting procedure of orbifold cohomology. We introduce local system and construct twisted orbifold cohomology. Then, we generalize Vafa-Witten's notion of discrete torsion to general orbifold and examine its relation to local system. Finally, some examples are computed.
We generalize Givental's Theorem for complete intersections in smooth toric varieties in the Fano case. In particular, we find Gromov--Witten invariants of Fano varieties of dimension $\geq 3$, which are complete intersections in weighted projective spaces and singular toric varieties. We generalize the Riemann-Roch equations to weighted projective spaces. We compute counting matrices of smooth Fano threefolds with Picard group Z and anticanonical degrees 2, 8, and 16.
In the present paper we provide a general algorithm to compute multiplicative cohomological operations on algebraic oriented cohomology of projective homogeneous G-varieties, where G is a split reductive algebraic group over a field of characteristic 0. More precisely, we extend such operations to the respective T-equivariant (T is a maximal split torus of G) oriented theories, and then compute them using equivariant Schubert calculus techniques. This generalizes an approach suggested by Garibaldi-Petrov-Semenov for Steenrod operations. We also show that operations on the theories of additive …
This note discusses some examples showing that the crystalline cohomology of even very mildly singular projective varieties tends to be quite large. In particular, any singular projective variety with at worst ordinary double points has infinitely generated crystalline cohomology in at least two cohomological degrees. These calculations rely critically on comparisons between crystalline and derived de Rham cohomology.
We employ the formalism of vanishing cycles and perverse sheaves to introduce and study the vanishing cohomology of complex projective hypersurfaces. As a consequence, we give upper bounds for the Betti numbers of projective hypersurfaces, generalizing those obtained by different methods by Dimca in the isolated singularities case, and by Siersma-Tibăr in the case of hypersurfaces with a $1$-dimensional singular locus. We also prove a supplement to the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for hypersurfaces, which takes the dimension of the singular locus into account, and we use it to give a new proof…
Following an idea of Totaro, we prove that the classical integral cycle class map from algebraic cycles to étale cohomology factors through a quotient of $\ell$-adic étale cobordism over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This shows that there is a strong topological obstruction for cohomology classes to be algebraic and that examples of Atiyah, Hirzebruch and Totaro also work in positive characteristic.
We define Deligne-Beilinson cycle maps for Lichtenbaum cohomology $H_L^m(X, \mathbb Z(n))$ and that with compact supports $H_{c,L}^m(X, \mathbb Z(n))$ of an arbitrary complex algebraic variety $X.$ When $(m,n)=(2,1),$ the homological part of our cycle map with compact supports gives a generalization of the Abel-Jacobi theorem and its projection to the Betti cohomology yields that of the Lefschetz theorem on $(1,1)$-cycles for arbitrary complex algebraic varieties. In general degrees $(m,n),$ we show that the Deligne-Beilinson cycle maps are always surjective on torsion and have torsion-free co…
We give bounds on the order of torsion in the Chow group of zero dimensional cycles for isotropic Grassmannians and Brauer-Severi flag varieties. To do this, we introduce tools to understand the behavior of torsion in Chow groups with coefficients under morphisms of proper varieties
We consider a Cartier divisor L on a d-dimensional complex projective variety X. It is well-known that the dimensions of the cohomomology groups H^i(X,O_X(mL)) grow at most like m^d, and it is natural to ask when one of these actually has maximal growth. For i = 0, this happens by definition exactly when L is big. Here we focus on the question of when one or more of the higher cohomology groups grows maximally. Our main result is that if one considers also small perturbations of the divisor in question, then the maximal growth of higher cohomology characterizes non-ample divisors. This criteri…
We prove the vanishing modulo torsion of the higher direct images of the sheaf of Witt vectors (and the Witt canonical sheaf) for a purely inseparable projective alteration between normal finite quotients over a perfect field. For this, we show that the relative Hodge-Witt cohomology admits an action of correspondences. As an application we define Witt-rational singularities which form a broader class than rational singularities. In particular, finite quotients have Witt-rational singularities. In addition, we prove that the torsion part of the Witt vector cohomology of a smooth, proper scheme…

When the Picard number $ρ(X)=2$, we prove that if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=1$ and $X$ has a negative curve or $X$ has two negative curves, then this conjecture holds for $X$.
A classical theorem by K. Ribet asserts that an abelian variety defined over the maximal cyclotomic extension $K$ of a number field has only finitely many torsion points. We show that this statement can be viewed as a particular case of a much more general one, namely that the absolute Galois group of $K$ acts with finitely many fixed points on the étale cohomology with $\bf Q/\bf Z$-coefficients of a smooth proper $\overline K$-variety defined over $K$. We also present a conjectural generalization of Ribet's theorem to torsion cycles of higher codimension. We offer supporting evidence for the…
In the integral cohomology ring of the classifying space of the projective linear group $PGL_n$ (over $\mathbb{C}$), we find a collection of $p$-torsions $y_{p,k}$ of degree $2(p^{k+1}+1)$ for any odd prime divisor $p$ of $n$, and $k\geq 0$. If in addition, $p^2\nmid n$, there are $p$-torsion classes $ρ_{p,k}$ of degree $p^{k+1}+1$ in the Chow ring of the classifying stack of $PGL_n$, such that the cycle class map takes $ρ_{p,k}$ to $y_{p,k}$. We present an application of the above classes regarding Chern subrings.
In this article the étale cohomology of constructible torsion sheaves on the étale site of the algebraic resp. adic Fargues-Fontaine curve is analyzed. In the $\ell\neq p$-torsion case, two conjectures of Fargues are verified: vanishing in degrees greater than two and the comparison between the étale cohomology of the adic and the algebraic curve. In the $p$-torsion case, under a certain assumption, the vanishing of the étale cohomology in degrees greater than two of those Zariski-constructible sheaves on the adic curve that come via pullback from the algebraic curve is proven.
We construct an associative ring which is a deformation of the quantum cohomology ring of the projective plane. Just as the quantum cohomology encodes the incidence characteristic numbers of rational plane curves, the contact cohomology encodes the tangency characteristic numbers.
We describe the Macaulay2 package TateOnProducts and its capabilities, which include computing cohomology tables and Beilinson monads of sheaves on products of projective spaces and the derived category pushForward of a sheaf under a morphism from a projective scheme to a projective space.
Results in the preliminary version have been strengthed. In addition, Batyrev's conjectural formula for quantum cohomology of projective bundles associated to direct sum of line bundles over $\Pee^n$ is partially verified.
We prove that the prime torsion in the local integral intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties in the flag variety of the general linear group grows exponentially in the rank. The idea of the proof is to find a highly singular point in a Schubert variety and calculate the Euler class of the normal bundle to the (miraculously smooth) fibre in a particular Bott-Samelson resolution. The result is a geometric version of an earlier result established using Soergel bimodule techniques.
Chen and Ruan [6] defined a very interesting cohomology theory for orbifolds, which is now called Chen-Ruan cohomology. The primary objective of this paper is to compute the Chen-Ruan cohomology rings of the weighted projective spaces, a class of important spaces in physics. The classical tools (Chen-Ruan cohomology, toric varieties, the localization technique) which have been proved to be successful are used to study the orbifold cohomology of weighted projective spaces. Given a weighted projective space ${\bf P}^{n}_{q_{0}, >..., q_{n}}$, we determine all of its twisted sectors and the corre…
We describe the integral equivariant cohomology ring of a weighted projective space in terms of piecewise polynomials, and thence by generators and relations. We deduce that the ring is a perfect invariant, and prove a Chern class formula for weighted projective bundles.
We describe the Chow rings of moduli spaces of ordered configurations of points on the projective line for arbitrary (sufficiently generic) stabilities. As an application, we exhibit such a moduli space admitting two small desingularizations with non-isomorphic cohomology rings.
We investigate the maximal finite length submodule of the Breuil-Kisin prismatic cohomology of a smooth proper formal scheme over a p-adic ring of integers. This submodule governs pathology phenomena in integral p-adic cohomology theories. Geometric applications include a control, in low degrees and mild ramifications, of (1) the discrepancy between two naturally associated Albanese varieties in characteristic p, and (2) kernel of the specialization map in p-adic étale cohomology. As an arithmetic application, we study the boundary case of the theory due to Fontaine-Laffaille, Fontaine-Messing…
For the split group $G_{2}$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{C}}.$ For the spin groups $\textrm{Spin}(n)$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{C}}$ for $n \leq 10.$ For $n=11,$ we make a full computation of the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{…
