In this paper, we study Bessel processes of dimension $δ\equiv2(1-μ)$, with $0<δ<2$, and some related martingales and random times. Our approach is based on martingale techniques and the general theory of stochastic processes (unlike the usual approach based on excursion theory), although for $0<δ<1$, these processes are even not semimartingales. The last time before 1 when a Bessel process hits 0, called $g_μ$, plays a key role in our study: we characterize its conditional distribution and extend Paul Lévy's arc sine law and a related result of Jeulin about the standard Brownian Motion. We also introduce some remarkable families of martingales related to the Bessel process, thus obtaining in some cases a one parameter extension of some results of Azéma and Yor in the Brownian setting: martingales which have the same set of zeros as the Bessel process and which satisfy the stopping theorem for $g_μ$, a one parameter extension of Azéma's second martingale, etc. Throughout our study, the local time of the Bessel process also plays a central role and we shall establish some of its elementary properties.
Some martingale characterizations of compound mixed Poisson processes are proven, extending S. Watanabe's (1964) martingale characterization of Poisson processes as well as the main result of Lyberopoulos and Macheras (2012), concerning martingale characterizations of mixed Poisson processes.
Some classes of increment martingales, and the corresponding localized classes, are studied. An increment martingale is indexed by the real line and its increment processes are martingales. We focus primarily on the behavior as time goes to minus infinity in relation to the quadratic variation or the predictable quadratic variation, and we relate the limiting behavior to the martingale property. Finally, integration with respect to an increment martingale is studied.
We give a bare-hands approach to the martingale representation theorem for integer valued random measures, which allows for a wide class of infinite activity jump processes, as well as all processes with well-ordered jumps.
This paper is devoted to the study of a certain type of martingale problems associated to general operators corresponding to processes which have finite lifetime. We analyse several properties and in particular the weak convergence of sequences of solutions for an appropriate Skorokhod topology setting. We point out the Feller-type features of the associated solutions to this type of martingale problem. Then localisation theorems for well-posed martingale problems or for corresponding generators are proved.
In this paper we derive martingale estimating functions for the dimensionality parameter of a Bessel process based on the eigenfunctions of the diffusion operator. Since a Bessel process is non-ergodic and the theory of martingale estimating functions is developed for ergodic diffusions, we use the space-time transformation of the Bessel process and formulate our results for a modified Bessel process. We deduce consistency, asymptotic normality and discuss optimality. It turns out that the martingale estimating function based of the first eigenfunction of the modified Bessel process coincides …
We give sufficient criteria for the Doléans-Dade exponential of a stochastic integral with respect to a counting process local martingale to be a true martingale. The criteria are adapted particularly to the case of counting processes and are sufficiently weak to be useful and verifiable, as we illustrate by several examples. In particular, the criteria allow for the construction of for example nonexplosive Hawkes processes as well as counting processes with stochastic intensities depending on diffusion processes.
In this paper we generalize the martingale of Kella and Whitt to the setting of Lévy-type processes and show that the (local) martingales obtained are in fact square integrable martingales which upon dividing by the time index converge to zero a.s. and in $L^2$. The reflected Lévy-type process is considered as an example.
Comparison results for Markov processes w.r.t. function class induced (integral) stochastic orders have a long history. The most general results so far for this problem have been obtained based on the theory of evolution systems on Banach spaces. In this paper we transfer the martingale comparison method, known for the comparison of semimartingales to Markovian semimartingales, to general Markov processes. The basic step of this martingale approach is the derivation of the supermartingale property of the linking process, giving a link between the processes to be compared. In this paper this pr…
We study class of Lévy processes having distributions being indentifiable by moments. We define system of polynomial martingales \newline $\left\{ M_{n}(X_{t},t),\mathcal{F}_{\leq t}\right\} _{n\geq 1},$ where $% \mathcal{F}_{\leq t}$ is a suitable filtration defined below. We present several properties of these martingales. Among others we show that $% M_{1}(X_{t},t)/t$ is a reversed martingale as well as a harness. Main results of the paper concern the question if martingale say $M_{i}$ multiplied by suitable determinstic function $μ_{i}(t)$ is a reversed martingale. We show that for $n\geq …
Many results in stochastic analysis and mathematical finance involve local martingales. However, specific examples of strict local martingales are rare and analytically often rather unhandy. We study local martingales that follow a given deterministic function up to a random time $γ$ at which they jump and stay constant afterwards. The (local) martingale properties of these single jump local martingales are characterised in terms of conditions on the input parameters. This classification allows an easy construction of strict local martingales, uniformly integrable martingales that are not in $…
We study jump-diffusion processes with parameters switching at random times. Being motivated by possible applications, we characterise equivalent martingale measures for these processes by means of the relative entropy. The minimal entropy approach is also developed. It is shown that in contrast to the case of Lévy processes, for this model an Esscher transformation does not produce the minimal relative entropy.
We present sufficient conditions, in terms of the jumping kernels, for two large classes of conservative Markov processes of pure-jump type to be purely discontinuous martingales with finite second moment. As an application, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm for sample paths of the associated processes.
We study general properties for the family of stochastic processes with polynomial regression property, that is that every conditional moment of the process is a polynomial. It turns out that then there exists a family of polynomial martingales $\left\{ M_{n}(X_{t},t)\right\}_{n\geq1}$ that contains complete information on the distribution (both marginal and transitional) of the process. We specify conditions expressed in terms of $M_{n}^{\prime}s$ under which a given process has independent increments and further is a Levy process, contains reversed martingales, is a harness or quadratic harn…
This work shows how exponential concentration inequalities for additive functionals of stochastic processes over a finite time interval can be derived from concentration inequalities for martingales. The approach is entirely probabilistic and naturally includes time-inhomogeneous and non-stationary processes as well as initial laws concentrated on a single point. The class of processes studied includes martingales, Markov processes and general square integrable processes. The general approach is complemented by a simple and direct method for martingales, diffusions and discrete-time Markov pro…
We show that the existence of a martingale approximation of a stationary process depends on the choice of the filtration. There exists a stationary linear process which has a martingale approximation with respect to the natural filtration, but no approximation with respect to a larger filtration with respect to wich it is adapted and regular. There exists a stationary process adapted, regular, and having a martingale approximation with respect to a given filtration but not (regular and having a martingale approximation) with respect to the natural filtration.
In the present paper we obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of equivalent martingale measures for Lévy-driven moving averages and other non-Markovian jump processes. The conditions that we obtain are, under mild assumptions, also necessary. For instance, this is the case for moving averages driven by an $α$-stable Lévy process with $α\in (1,2]$. Our proofs rely on various techniques for showing the martingale property of stochastic exponentials.
In this paper we explain that the natural filtration of a continuous Hunt process is continuous, and show that martingales over such a filtration are continuous. We further establish a martingale representation theorem for a class of continuous Hunt processes under certain technical conditions. In particular we establish the martingale representation theorem for the martingale parts of (reflecting) symmetric diffusions in a bounded domain with a continuous boundary. Together with an approach put forward in Lyons et al(2009), our martingale representation theorem is then applied to the study of…
This paper is devoted to a direct martingale approach for P{ó}lya urn models asymptotic behaviour. A P{ó}lya process is said to be small when the ratio of its remplacement matrix eigenvalues is less than or equal to 1/2, otherwise it is called large. We find again some well-known results on the asymptotic behaviour for small and large urns processes. We also provide new almost sure properties for small urns processes.
We show that all local martingales with respect to the initially enlarged natural filtration of a vector of multivariate point processes can be weakly represented up to the minimum among the explosion times of the components. We also prove that a strong representation holds if any multivariate point process of the vector has almost surely infinite explosion time and discrete mark's space. Then we provide a condition under which the components of the multidimensional local martingale driving the strong representation are pairwise orthogonal.
Let $A$ be a pseudo-differential operator with negative definite symbol $q$. In this paper we establish a sufficient condition such that the well-posedness of the $(A,C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))$-martingale problem implies that the unique solution to the martingale problem is a Feller process. This provides a proof of a former claim by van Casteren. As an application we prove new existence and uniqueness results for Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations and stable-like processes with unbounded coefficients.
We prove uniqueness of a martingale problem with boundary conditions on a simplex associated to a differential operator with an unbounded drift. We show that the solution of the martingale problem remains absorbed at the boundary once it attains it, and that, after hitting the boundary, it performs a diffusion on a lower dimensional simplex, similar to the original one. We also prove that in the diffusive time scale condensing zero-range processes evolve as this absorbed diffusion.
We consider local martingales which are standard or stochastic exponentials M of one component X of a multivariate affine process in the sense of Duffie, Filipovic and Schachermayer (2003). By completing their characterization of conservative affine processes, we provide deterministic necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the parameters of X for M to be a true martingale.
We obtain a Bernstein type Gaussian concentration inequality for martingales. Our inequality improves the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality for moderate deviations $x$. Following the work of McDiarmid (1989), Talagrand (1996) and Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart (2000,2003), we show that our result can be applied to the concentration of random functions, Erdös-Rényi random graph, and maxima of empirical processes. Several interesting Gaussian concentration inequalities have been obtained.
The $L^p$ maximal inequalities for martingales are one of the classical results in the theory of stochastic processes. Here we establish the sharp moderate maximal inequalities for one-dimensional diffusion processes, which include the $L^p$ maximal inequalities as special cases. Moreover, we apply our theory to many specific examples, including the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, Brownian motion with drift, reflected Brownian motion with drift, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, radial OU process, and Bessel process. The results are further applied to establish the moderate maximal inequalities for…
In this article, we consider the properties of hitting times for $G$-martingale and the stopped processes. We prove that the stopped processes for $G$-martingales are still $G$-martingales and that the hitting times for a class of $G$-martingales including $G$-Brownian motion are quasi-continuous. As an application, we improve the $G$-martingale representation theorems in [Song10].
We generalize a previous result concerning free martingale polynomials for the stationary free Jacobi process of parameters $λ\in ]0.1], θ= 1/2$. Hopelessly, apart from the case $λ= 1$, the polynomials we derive are no longer orthogonal with respect to the spectral measure. As a matter of fact, we use the multiplicative renormalization to write down the corresponding orthogonality measure.
Let the process Y(t) be a Skorohod integral process with respect to Brownian motion. We use a recent result by Tudor (2004), to prove that Y(t) can be represented as the limit of linear combinations of processes that are products of forward and backward Brownian martingales. Such a result is a further step towards the connection between the theory of continuous-time (semi)martingales, and that of anticipating stochastic integration. We establish an explicit link between our results and the classic characterization, due to Duc and Nualart (1990), of the chaotic decomposition of Skorohod integra…
We discuss a class of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations(BSDEs) with no driving martingale. When the randomness of the driver depends on a general Markov process $X$, those BSDEs are denominated Markovian BSDEs and can be associated to a deterministic problem, called Pseudo-PDE which constitute the natural generalization of a parabolicsemilinear PDE which naturally appears when the underlying filtration is Brownian. We consider two aspects of well-posedness forthe Pseudo-PDEs: "classical" and "martingale" solutions.
For a general Multidimensional Lévy process (satisfying some moment conditions), we introduce the Multidimensional power jump processes and the related Multidimensional Teugels martingales. Furthermore, we orthogonalize the Multidimensional Teugels martingales by applying Gram-Schmidt process. We give a chaotic representation for every square integral random variable in terms of these orthogonalized Multidimensional Teugels martingales. The predictable representation with respect to the same set of Multidimensional orthogonalized martingales of square integrable random variables and of square …
Let $L$ be the operator defined on $C^2$ functions by $$L f(x)=\int[f(x+h)-f(x)-1_{(|h|\leq 1)}\nabla f(x)\cdot h]\frac{n(x,h)}{|h|^{d+α(x)}}dh.$$ This is an operator of variable order and the corresponding process is of pure jump type. We consider the martingale problem associated with $L$. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness are given. Transition density estimates for $α$-stable processes are also obtained.
In the present paper, a new and simple approach is provided for proving rigorously that for general Lévy financial markets the minimal entropy martingale measure and the Esscher martingale measure coincide. The method consists in approximating the probability measure P by a sequence of Lévy preserving probability measures P_n with exponential moments of all order. As a by-product, it turns out that the problem of finding the minimal entropy martingale measure for the Lévy market is equivalent to the corresponding problem but for a certain one-step financial market. The existence of the Esscher…
Let $α\in (0,2)$ and consider the operator $$L f(x) =\int [f(x+h)-f(x)-1_{(|h|\leq 1)} \nabla f(x)\cdot h] \frac{A(x,h)}{|h|^{d+α}} dh, $$ where the $\nabla f(x)\cdot h$ term is omitted if $α<1$. We consider the martingale problem corresponding to the operator $L$ and under mild conditions on the function $A$ prove that there exists a unique solution.
In this paper we study processes which are constructed by a convolution of a deterministic kernel with a martingale. A special emphasis is put on the case where the driving martingale is a centred Lévy process, which covers the popular class of fractional Lévy processes. As a main result we show that, under appropriate assumptions on the kernel and the martingale, the maximum process of the corresponding `convoluted martingale' is $p$-integrable and we derive maximal inequalities in terms of the kernel and of the moments of the driving martingale.
It is well-known that well-posedness of a martingale problem in the class of continuous (or r.c.l.l.) solutions enables one to construct the associated transition probability functions. We extend this result to the case when the martingale problem is well-posed in the class of solutions which are continuous in probability. This extension is used to improve on a criterion for a probability measure to be invariant for the semigroup associated with the Markov process. We also give examples of martingale problems that are well-posed in the class of solutions which are continuous in probability but…
Approximations to sums of stationary and ergodic sequences by martingales are investigated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for such sums to be asymptotically normal conditionally given the past up to time 0 are obtained. It is first shown that a martingale approximation is necessary for such normality and then that the sums are asymptotically normal if and only if the approximating martingales satisfy a Lindeberg-Feller condition. Using the explicit construction of the approximating martingales, a central limit theorem is derived for the sample means of linear processes. The conditions ar…
In this paper we explain how the notion of ''weak Dirichlet process'' is the suitable generalization of the one of semimartingale with jumps. For such a process we provide a unique decomposition which is new also for semimartingales: in particular we introduce ''characteristics'' for weak Dirichlet processes. We also introduce a weak concept (in law) of finite quadratic variation. We investigate a set of new useful chain rules and we discuss a general framework of (possibly path-dependent with jumps) martingale problems with a set of examples of SDEs with jumps driven by a distributional drift…
We use the abstract method of (local) martingale problems in order to give criteria for convergence of stochastic processes. Extending previous notions, the formulation we use is neither restricted to Markov processes (or semimartingales), nor to continuous or cadlag paths. We illustrate our findings both, by finding generalizations of known results, and proving new results. For the latter, we work on processes with fixed times of discontinuity.
When the \textit{martingale representation property} holds, we call any local martingale which realizes the representation a \textit{representation process}. There are two properties of the \textit{representation process} which can greatly facilitate the computations under the \textit{martingale representation property}. Actually, on the one hand, the \textit{representation process} is not unique and there always exists a \textit{representation process} which is locally bounded and has pathwisely orthogonal components outside of a predictable thin set. On the other hand, the jump measure of a …
This paper contributes to the study of relative martingales. Specifically, for a closed random set $H$, they are processes null on $H$ which decompose as $M=m+v$, where $m$ is a càdlàg uniformly integrable martingale and, $v$ is a continuous process with integrable variations such that $v_{0}=0$ and $dv$ is carried by $H$. First, we extend this notion to stochastic processes not necessarily null on $H$, where $m$ is considered local martingale instead of a uniformly integrable martingale. Thus, we provide a general framework for the new larger class of relative martingales by presenting some s…
We show the existence of Lévy-type stochastic processes in one space dimension with characteristic triplets that are either discontinuous at thresholds, or are stable-like with stability index functions for which the closures of the discontinuity sets are countable. For this purpose, we formulate the problem in terms of a Skorokhod-space martingale problem associated with non-local operators with discontinuous coefficients. These operators are approximated along a sequence of smooth non-local operators giving rise to Feller processes with uniformly controlled symbols. They converge uniformly o…
We construct a family of non-Gaussian martingales the marginals of which are all Gaussian. We give the predictable quadratic variation of these processes and show they do not have continuous paths. These processes are Markovian and inhomogeneous in time, and we give their infinitesimal generators. Within this family we find a class of piecewise deterministic pure jump processes and describe the laws of jumps and times between the jumps.
We introduce a pathwise integration for Volterra processes driven by Lévy noise or martingale noise. These processes are widely used in applications to turbulence, signal processes, biology, and in environmental finance. Indeed they constitute a very flexible class of models, which include fractional Brownian and Lévy motions and it is part of the so-called ambit fields. A pathwise integration with respect of such Volterra processes aims at producing a framework where modelling is easily understandable from an information perspective. The techniques used are based on fractional calculus and in…
A branching Lévy process can be seen as the continuous-time version of a branching random walk. It describes a particle system on the real line in which particles move and reproduce independently in a Poissonian manner. Just as for Lévy processes, the law of a branching Lévy process is determined by its characteristic triplet $(σ^2,a,Λ)$, where the branching Lévy measure $Λ$ describes the intensity of the Poisson point process of births and jumps. We establish a version of Biggins' theorem in this framework, that is we provide necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the characteristic …
We consider a supercritical branching process $Z_n$ in a stationary and ergodic random environment $ξ=(ξ_n)_{n\ge0}$. Due to the martingale convergence theorem, it is known that the normalized population size $W_n=Z_n/ (\mathbb E (Z_n|ξ))$ converges almost surely to a random variable $W$. We prove that if $W$ is not concentrated at $0$ or $1$ then for almost every environment $ξ$ the law of $W$ conditioned on the environment $ξ$ is absolutely continuous with a possible atom at $0$. The result generalizes considerably the main result of \cite{kaplan:1974}, and of course it covers the well-known…
We provide verification theorems (at different levels of generality) for infinite horizon stochastic control problems in continuous time for semimartingales. The control framework is given as an abstract "martingale formulation", which encompasses a broad range of standard control problems. Under appropriate conditions we show that the set of admissible controls gives rise to a certain class of controlled special semimartingales. Our results generalise both the standard controlled Itô- and Lévy-diffusion settings as we allow ourselves to locally control not only the drift and diffusion coeffic…
Let $L$ be a multidimensional Lévy process under $P$ in its own filtration. The $f^q$-minimal martingale measure $Q_q$ is defined as that equivalent local martingale measure for $\mathcal {E}(L)$ which minimizes the $f^q$-divergence $E[(dQ/dP)^q]$ for fixed $q\in(-\infty,0)\cup(1,\infty)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of $Q_q$ and an explicit formula for its density. For $q=2$, we relate the sufficient conditions to the structure condition and discuss when the former are also necessary. Moreover, we show that $Q_q$ converges for $q\searrow1$ in entropy to the m…
Recently, a new approach in the fine analysis of stochastic processes sample paths has been developed to predict the evolution of the local regularity under (pseudo-)differential operators. In this paper, we study the sample paths of continuous martingales and stochastic integrals. We proved that the almost sure 2-microlocal frontier of a martingale can be obtained through the local regularity of its quadratic variation. It allows to link the Hölder regularity of a stochastic integral to the regularity of the integrand and integrator processes. These results provide a methodology to predict th…
In this paper we prove that every random variable of the form $F(M_T)$ with $F:\real^d \to\real$ a Borelian map and $M$ a $d$-dimensional continuous Markov martingale with respect to a Markov filtration $\mathcal{F}$ admits an exact integral representation with respect to $M$, that is, without any orthogonal component. This representation holds true regardless any regularity assumption on $F$. We extend this result to Markovian quadratic growth BSDEs driven by $M$ and show they can be solved without an orthogonal component. To this end, we extend first existence results for such BSDEs under a …
We consider a branching Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that there exists a random subset $Θ$ of $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ such that the limit of the derivative martingale exists simultaneously for all directions $θ\in Θ$ almost surely. This allows us to define a random measure on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ whose density is given by the derivative martingale. The proof is based on first moment arguments: we approximate the martingale of interest by a series of processes, which do not take into account the particles that travelled too far away. We show that these new processes are uniformly integr…
Let $\mathfrak{z}$ be a stochastic exponential, i.e., $\mathfrak{z}_t=1+\int_0^t\mathfrak{z}_{s-}dM_s$, of a local martingale $M$ with jumps $\triangle M_t>-1$. Then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a nonnegative local martingale with $\E\mathfrak{z}_t\le 1$. If $\E\mathfrak{z}_T= 1$, then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a martingale on the time interval $[0,T]$. Martingale property plays an important role in many applications. It is therefore of interest to give natural and easy verifiable conditions for the martingale property. In this paper, the property $\E\mathfrak{z}_{_T}=1$ is verified with the so-called linear gro…
