This thesis introduces the notion of "relative gerbes" for smooth maps of manifolds, and discusses their differential geometry. The equivalence classes of relative gerbes are classified by the relative integral cohomology in degree three. Furthermore, by using the concept of relative gerbes, the pre-quantization of Lie group-valued moment maps is developed, and its equivalence with the pre-quantization of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian loop group spaces is established.
This paper introduces the notion of ``relative gerbes'' for smooth maps of manifolds, and discusses their differential geometry. The equivalence classes of relative gerbes are further classified by the relative integral cohomology in degree three.
We give a precise and general description of gerbes valued in arbitrary crossed module and over an arbitrary differential stack. We do it using only Lie groupoids, hence ordinary differential geometry. We prove the coincidence with the existing notions by comparing our construction with non-Abelian cohomology.
We discuss certain aspects of the combinatorial approach to the differential geometry of non-abelian gerbes, due to W. Messing and the author (arXiv:math.AG/0106083), and give a more direct derivation of the associated cocycle equations. This leads us to a more restrictive definition of the corresponding coboundary relations. We also show that the diagrammatic proofs of certain local curving and curvature equations may be replaced by computations with differential forms.
Bundle gerbes are a higher version of line bundles, we present nonabelian bundle gerbes as a higher version of principal bundles. Connection, curving, curvature and gauge transformations are studied both in a global coordinate independent formalism and in local coordinates. These are the gauge fields needed for the construction of Yang-Mills theories with 2-form gauge potential.
We discuss nonabelian bundle gerbes and their differential geometry using simplicial methods. Associated to any crossed module there is a simplicial group NC, the nerve of the 1-category defined by the crossed module and its geometric realization |NC|. Equivalence classes of principal bundles with structure group |NC| are shown to be one-to-one with stable equivalence classes of what we call crossed module gerbes bundle gerbes. We can also associate to a crossed module a 2-category C'. Then there are two equivalent ways how to view classifying spaces of NC-bundles and hence of |NC|-bundles and…
Let G be a compact Lie group acting on a smooth manifold M. In this paper, we consider Meinrenken's G-equivariant bundle gerbe connections on M as objects in a 2-groupoid. We prove this 2-category is equivalent to the 2-groupoid of gerbe connections on the differential quotient stack associated to M, and isomorphism classes of G-equivariant gerbe connections are classified by degree three differential equivariant cohomology. Finally, we consider the existence and uniqueness of conjugation-equivariant gerbe connections on compact semisimple Lie groups.
We construct a new effective orbifold $\widehat{\Y}$ with an $S^1$-gerbe $c$ to study an $S^1$-gerbe $\mathfrak{t}$ on a $G$-gerbe $\Y$ over an orbifold $\B$. We view the former as the relative dual, relative to $\B$, of the latter. We show that the two pairs $(\Y, \mathfrak{t})$ and $(\widehat{\Y}, c)$ have isomorphic categories of sheaves, and also the associated twisted groupoid algebras are Morita equivalent. As a corollary, the K-theory and cohomology groups of $(\Y, \mathfrak{t})$ and $(\widehat{\Y}, c)$ are isomorphic.
This paper generalizes Bismut's equivariant Chern character to the setting of abelian gerbes. In particular, associated to an abelian gerbe with connection, an equivariantly closed differential form is constructed on the space of maps of a torus into the manifold. These constructions are made explicit using a new local version of the higher Hochschild complex, resulting in differential forms given by iterated integrals. Connections to two dimensional topological field theories are indicated. Similarly, this local higher Hochschild complex is used to calculate the 2-holonomy of an abelian gerbe…
This paper exhibits equivalences of 2-stacks between certain models of $\mathbb{S}^1$-gerbes and differential 3-cocycles. We focus primarily on the model of Dixmier-Douady bundles, and provide an equivalence between the 2-stack of Dixmier-Douady bundles and the 2-stack of differential 3-cocycles of height 1, where the 'height' is related to the presence of connective structure. Differential 3-cocycles of height 2 (resp. height 3) are shown to be equivalent to $\mathbb{S}^1$-bundle gerbes with connection (resp. with connection and curving). These equivalences extend to the equivariant setting o…
The theories of strings and $D$-branes have motivated the development of non Abelian cohomology techniques in differential geometry, on the purpose to find a geometric interpretation of characteristic classes. The spaces studied here, like orbifolds are not often smooth. In classical differential geometry, non smooth spaces appear also naturally, for example in the theory of foliations, the space of leaves can be an orbifold with singularities. The scheme to study these structures is identical: classical tools used in differential geometry, like connections, curvature are adapted. The purpose …
We define in a global manner the notion of a connective structure for a gerbe on a space X. When the gerbe is endowed with trivializing data with respect to an open cover of X, we describe this connective structure in two separate ways, which extend from abelian to general gerbes the corresponding descriptions due to J.- L. Brylinski and N. Hitchin. We give a global definition of the 3-curvature of this connective structure as a 3-form on X with values in the Lie stack of the gauge stack of the gerbe. We also study this notion locally in terms of more traditional Lie algebra-valued 3-forms. Th…
This is a mostly self-contained survey article about bundle gerbes and some of their recent applications in geometry, field theory, and quantisation. We cover the definition of bundle gerbes with connection and their morphisms, and explain the classification of bundle gerbes with connection in terms of differential cohomology. We then survey how the surface holonomy of bundle gerbes combines with their transgression line bundles to yield a smooth bordism-type field theory. Finally, we exhibit the use of bundle gerbes in geometric quantisation of 2-plectic as well as 1- and 2-shifted symplectic…
In the first chapter, we give a precise and general description of gerbes valued in arbitrary crossed module and over an arbitrary differential stack. We do it using only Lie groupoids, hence ordinary differential geometry, by considering differential stacks as being Lie groupoids up to Morita equivalence. We prove the coincidence with the existing notions by comparing our construction with non-Abelian cohomology. More precisely, we introduce the key notion of extension of Lie groupoids valued in a crossed-module. We relate it with Dedecker's non-Abelian 1-cocycles, and we then show that Morit…
We develop the theory of Chern-Simons bundle 2-gerbes and multiplicative bundle gerbes associated to any principal $G$-bundle with connection and a class in $H^4(BG, \ZZ)$ for a compact semi-simple Lie group $G$. The Chern-Simons bundle 2-gerbe realises differential geometrically the Cheeger-Simons invariant. We apply these notions to refine the Dijkgraaf-Witten correspondence between three dimensional Chern-Simons functionals and Wess-Zumino-Witten models associated to the group $G$. We do this by introducing a lifting to the level of bundle gerbes of the natural map from $H^4(BG, \ZZ)$ to $H…
We introduce an axiomatic framework for the parallel transport of connections on gerbes. It incorporates parallel transport along curves and along surfaces, and is formulated in terms of gluing axioms and smoothness conditions. The smoothness conditions are imposed with respect to a strict Lie 2-group, which plays the role of a band, or structure 2-group. Upon choosing certain examples of Lie 2-groups, our axiomatic framework reproduces in a systematical way several known concepts of gerbes with connection: non-abelian differential cocycles, Breen-Messing gerbes, abelian and non-abelian bundle…
The explanation of the photoelectric effect by Einstein and Maxwell's field theory of electromagnetism have motivated De Broglie to make the hypothesis that matter exhibits both waves and particles like-properties. These representations of matter are enlightened by string theory which represents particles with stringlike entities. Mathematically, string theory can be formulated with a gauge theory on loop spaces which is equivalent to the differential geometry of gerbes. In this paper, we show that the descent theory of Giraud and Grothendieck can enable to describe the wave-like properties of…
We generalize Abel's classical theorem on linear equivalence of divisors on a Riemann surface. For every closed submanifold $M^d \subset X^n$ in a compact oriented Riemannian $n$--manifold, or more generally for any $d$--cycle $Z$ relative to a triangulation of $X$, we define a (simplicial) $(n-d-1)$--gerbe $Λ_{Z}$, the Abel gerbe determined by $Z$, whose vanishing as a Deligne cohomology class generalizes the notion of `linear equivalence to zero'. In this setting, Abel's theorem remains valid. Moreover we generalize the classical Inversion Theorem for the Abel--Jacobi map, thereby proving th…
We prove that for any k greater or equal to 2, given a smooth compact k-dimensional manifold and a multiplicative k-1-gerbe on a Lie group, together with an integrable connection, there is a line bundle on the corresponding Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian having the factorization property. We show that taking global sections of this line bundle we obtain a factorization algebra.
In this paper, a new higher Hochschild Complex is defined with an Iterated Integral map to locally model differential forms on the space of bigons on $M$. In particular, given the local data for a gerbe with structure 2-group given by a crossed module of matrix-groups, there is an element in our curved zigzag Hochschild complex associated to the local 2-holonomy given by such a gerbe. This paper introduces an initial construction central to the author's PhD Thesis.
This is the second in a series of papers discussing in the framework of gerbe theory canonical and geometric aspects of the 2d nonlinear sigma model in the presence of conformal defects in the worldsheet. Employing the formal tools worked out in the first paper of the series, 1101.1126 [hep-th], a thorough analysis of rigid symmetries of the sigma model is carried out with emphasis on algebraic structures on generalised tangent bundles over the target space of the theory and over its state space that give rise to a realisation of the symmetry algebra on states. The analysis leads to a proposal…
We study two notions of relative differential cohomology, using the model of differential characters. The two notions arise from the two options to construct relative homology, either by cycles of a quotient complex or of a mapping cone complex. We discuss the relation of the two notions of relative differential cohomology to each other. We discuss long exact sequences for both notions, thereby clarifying their relation to absolute differential cohomology. We construct the external and internal product of relative and absolute characters and show that relative differential cohomology is a righ…
We consider the $\mathfrak{aff}(n|1)-$module structure on the spaces of differential bilinear operators acting on the superspaces of weighted densities. We classify $\mathfrak{aff}(n|1)-$invariant binary differential operators acting on the spaces of weighted densities. This result allows us to compute the first $\mathfrak{aff}(n|1)-$relative differential cohomology of $\mathcal{K}(n)$ with coefficients in the superspace of linear differential operators acting on the superspaces of weighted densities.
We deal with hypersurfaces in the framework of the $n$-dimensional relative differential geometry. We consider a hypersurface $\varPhi$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with position vector field $\mathbf{x}$, which is relatively normalized by a relative normalization $\mathbf{y}$. Then $\mathbf{y}$ is also a relative normalization of every member of the one-parameter family $\mathcal{F}$ of hypersurfaces $\varPhi_μ$ with position vector field $$\mathbf{x}_μ= \mathbf{x} + μ\, \mathbf{y},$$ where $μ$ is a real constant. We call every hypersurface $\varPhi_μ\in \mathcal{F}$ relatively parallel to $\varPhi$…
This paper is devoted to the 3-dimensional relative differential geometry of surfaces. In the Euclidean space $\R{E} ^3 $ we consider a surface $\varPhi %\colon \vect{x} = \vect{x}(u^1,u^2) $ with position vector field $\vect{x}$, which is relatively normalized by a relative normalization $\vect{y}% (u^1,u^2) $. A surface $\varPhi^*% \colon \vect{x}^* = \vect{x}^*(u^1,u^2) $ with position vector field $\vect{x}^* = \vect{x} + μ\, \vect{y}$, where $μ$ is a real constant, is called a relatively parallel surface to $\varPhi$. Then $\vect{y}$ is also a relative normalization of $\varPhi^*$. The ai…
We deal with hypersurfaces in the framework of the relative differential geometry in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We consider a hypersurface $\varPhi$ in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with position vector field $\vect{x}$ which is relatively normalized by a relative normalization $\vect{y}$. Then $\vect{y}$ is also a relative normalization of every member of the one-parameter family $\mathcal{F}$ of hypersurfaces $\varPhi_μ$ with position vector field $\vect{x}_μ= \vect{x} + μ\, \vect{y}$, where $μ$ is a real constant. We call every hypersurface $\varPhi_μ\in \mathcal{F}$ relatively parallel to $\varPhi$. This considerat…
There are two natural candidates for the group of relative Cheeger-Simons differential characters. The first directly extends the work of Cheeger and Simons and the second extends the description given by Hopkins and Singer of the Cheeger-Simons group as the homology of a certain cochain complex. We discuss both approaches and relate the two relative groups.
In this paper we deal with relative normalizations of hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Considering a relative normalization $\bar{y}$ of an hypersurface $Φ$ we decompose the corresponding Tchebychev vector $\bar{T}$ in two components, one parallel to the Tchebychev vector $\bar{T}_{EUK}$ of the Euclidean normalization $\barξ$ and one parallel to the orthogonal projection $\bar{y}_{T}$ of $\bar{y}$ in the tangent hyperplane of $Φ$. We use this decomposition to investigate some properties of $Φ$, which concern its Gaussian curvature, the support function…
Let h be a rationally even cohomology theory and h^ the natural differential refinement, as defined by Hopkins and Singer. We consider the possible definitions of the relative differential cohomology groups, generalizing the analogous picture for the Deligne cohomology, and we show the corresponding long exact sequence in each case.
We provide a suitable axiomatic framework for differential cohomology in the relative case and we deduce the corresponding long exact sequences. We also construct the relative version of the generalized Cheeger-Simons characters and we define the integration map when the fibre has a boundary.
For a real or complex semisimple Lie group $G$ and two nested parabolic subgroups $Q\subset P\subset G$, we study parabolic geometries of type $(G,Q)$. Associated to the group $P$, we introduce a class of relative natural bundles and relative tractor bundles and construct some basic invariant differential operators on such bundles. We define a (rather weak) notion of "compressability" for operators acting on relative differential forms with values in a relative tractor bundle. The we develop a general machinery which converts a compressable operator to an operator on bundles associated to comp…
Let Vect(R) be the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields on R. The space of symbols Pol(T^* R) admits a non-trivial deformation (given by differential operators on weighted densities) as a Vect(R)-module that becomes trivial once the action is restricted to sl(2). The deformations of Pol(T^* R), which become trivial once the action is restricted to sl(2) and such that the Vect(R)-action on them is expressed in terms of differential operators, are classified by the elements of the weight basis of H^2(Vect(R),sl(2);D_{λ,μ}). The main result of this paper is computation of this cohomology. In addit…
In this article a relation between curvature functionals for surfaces in the Euclidean space and area functionals in relative differential geometry will be given. Relative differential geometry can be described as the geometry of surfaces in the affine space, endowed with a distinguished "relative normal vector field" which generalises the notion of unit normal vector field N from Euclidean differential geometry. A concise review of relative differential geometry will be presented. The main result, to which the title of this article refers, will be given in the third section. Here we consider,…
We study the behavior of the heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian on a contact manifold endowed with a family of Riemannian metrics that blow-up the directions transverse to the contact distribution. We apply this to analyze the behavior of global spectral invariants such as the eta-invariant and the determinant of the Laplacian. In particular we prove that contact versions of the relative eta-invariant and the relative analytic torsion are equal to their Riemannian analogues and hence topological.
Let G be a general (not necessarily finite dimensional compact) Lie group, let g be its Lie algebra, let Cg be the cone on g in the category of differential graded Lie algebras, and consider the functor which assigns to a chain complex V the V-valued total de Rham complex of G. We describe the G-equivariant de Rham cohomology in terms of a suitable relative differential graded Ext, defined on the appropriate category of (G,Cg)-modules. The meaning of "relative" is made precise via the dual standard construction associated with the monad involving the aforementioned functor and the associated f…
We develop a relative version of Kostant's harmonic theory and use this to prove a relative version of Kostant's theorem on Lie algebra (co)homology. These are associated to two nested parabolic subalgebras in a semisimple Lie algebra. We show how relative homology groups can be used to realize representations with lowest weight in one (regular or singular) affine Weyl orbit. In the regular case, we show how all the weights in the orbit can be realized as relative homology groups (with different coefficients). These results are motivated by applications to differential geometry and the constru…
