The theories of strings and $D$-branes have motivated the development of non Abelian cohomology techniques in differential geometry, on the purpose to find a geometric interpretation of characteristic classes. The spaces studied here, like orbifolds are not often smooth. In classical differential geometry, non smooth spaces appear also naturally, for example in the theory of foliations, the space of leaves can be an orbifold with singularities. The scheme to study these structures is identical: classical tools used in differential geometry, like connections, curvature are adapted. The purpose of this paper is to present the notion of differential category which unifies all these points of view. This enables us to provide a geometric interpretation of 5-characteristic classes, and to interpret classical problems which appear in the theory of $G$-structures by using gerbes.
We define a Fréchet--Lie groupoid Map(S^1,X) of anafunctors from the circle into a Lie groupoid X. This provides a presentation of the Hom-stack Hom(S^1,\cX), where \cX is the di…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a Lie groupoid. The category $B\mathcal{G}$ of principal $\mathcal{G}$-bundles defines a differentiable stack. On the other hand, given a differentiable stack $\mathcal{D}$, there exists a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{H}$ such that $B\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{D}$. Define a gerbe over a stack as a morphism of stacks $F\colon \mathcal{D}\rightarrow \mathcal{C}$, such that $F$ and the diagonal map $Δ_F\colon \mathcal{D}\rightarrow \mathcal{D}\times_{\mathcal{C}}\mathcal{D}$ are epimorphisms. This paper explores the relationship between a gerbe defined above and a Mori…
We study $S^1$-bundles and $S^1$-gerbes over differentiable stacks in terms of Lie groupoids, and construct Chern classes and Dixmier-Douady classes in terms of analogues of connections and curvature.
We introduce differentiable stacks and explain the relationship with Lie groupoids. Then we study $S^1$-bundles and $S^1$-gerbes over differentiable stacks. In particular, we establish the relationship between $S^1$-gerbes and groupoid $S^1$-central extensions. We define connections and curvings for groupoid $S^1$-central extensions extending the corresponding notions of Brylinski, Hitchin and Murray for $S^1$-gerbes over manifolds. We develop a Chern-Weil theory of characteristic classes in this general setting by presenting a construction of Chern classes and Dixmier-Douady classes in terms …
We study non-abelian differentiable gerbes over stacks using the theory of Lie groupoids. More precisely, we develop the theory of connections on Lie groupoid $G$-extensions, which we call "connections on gerbes", and study the induced connections on various associated bundles. We also prove analogues of the Bianchi identities. In particular, we develop a cohomology theory which measures the existence of connections and curvings for $G$-gerbes over stacks. We also introduce $G$-central extensions of groupoids, generalizing the standard groupoid $S^1$-central extensions. As an example, we apply…
In this paper we give a short introduction to our results on the holonomy of gerbe-connections and explain our motivation coming from state-sum models.
Let $G$ be a Lie group and $G\to\Aut(G)$ be the canonical group homomorphism induced by the adjoint action of a group on itself. We give an explicit description of a 1-1 correspondence between Morita equivalence classes of, on the one hand, principal 2-group $[G\to\Aut(G)]$-bundles over Lie groupoids and, on the other hand, $G$-extensions of Lie groupoids (i.e.\ between principal $[G\to\Aut(G)]$-bundles over differentiable stacks and $G$-gerbes over differentiable stacks). This approach also allows us to identify $G$-bound gerbes and $[Z(G)\to 1]$-group bundles over differentiable stacks, wher…
In this PhD thesis, we have studied certain geometric structures over Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks. This thesis is based on the work [arXiv:2103.04560, arXiv:2012.08447, arXiv:2012.08442, arXiv:1907.00375]. In [arXiv:1907.00375], we have discussed the correspondence between two notions of a gerbe over a stack. In [arXiv:2012.08447], we have developed the notion of Chern-Weil map for principal bundles over a Lie groupoid when the Lie groupoid is equipped with a connection. In [arXiv:2012.08442], we discuss the notion of connection on the principal bundle over a Deligne Mumford stack …
We present a construction of a 2-Hilbert space of sections of a bundle gerbe, a suitable candidate for a prequantum 2-Hilbert space in higher geometric quantisation. We introduce a direct sum on the morphism categories in the 2-category of bundle gerbes and show that these categories are cartesian monoidal and abelian. Endomorphisms of the trivial bundle gerbe, or higher functions, carry the structure of a rig-category, which acts on generic morphism categories of bundle gerbes. We continue by presenting a categorification of the hermitean metric on a hermitean line bundle. This is achieved by…
We construct a prequantum 2-Hilbert space for any line bundle gerbe whose Dixmier-Douady class is torsion. Analogously to usual prequantisation, this 2-Hilbert space has the category of sections of the line bundle gerbe as its underlying 2-vector space. These sections are obtained as certain morphism categories in Waldorf's version of the 2-category of line bundle gerbes. We show that these morphism categories carry a monoidal structure under which they are semisimple and abelian. We introduce a dual functor on the sections, which yields a closed structure on the morphisms between bundle gerbe…
In a previous paper we outlined how discrete torsion can be understood geometrically as an analogue of orbifold U(1) Wilson lines. In this paper we shall prove the remaining details. More precisely, in this paper we describe gerbes in terms of objects known as stacks (essentially, sheaves of categories), and develop much of the basic theory of gerbes in such language. Then, once the relevant technology has been described, we give a first-principles geometric derivation of discrete torsion. In other words, we define equivariant gerbes, and classify equivariant structures on gerbes and on gerbes…
We generalize the notion of a small sheaf of sets over a topological space or manifold to define the notion of a small stack of groupoids over an étale topological or differentiable stack. We then provide a construction analogous to the étalé space construction in this context, establishing an equivalence of 2-categories between small stacks over an étale stack and local homeomorphisms over it. We go on to characterize small sheaves and gerbes. We show that ineffective data of étale stacks is completely described by the theory of small gerbes. Furthermore, it is shown that étale stacks (and in…
In this paper, we consider diffeological spaces as stacks over the site of smooth manifolds, as well as the "underlying" diffeological space of any stack. More precisely, we consider diffeological spaces as so-called concrete sheaves and show that the Grothendieck construction sending these sheaves to stacks has a left adjoint: the functor sending any stack to its diffeological coarse moduli space. As an application, we restrict our attention to differentiable stacks and examine the geometry behind the coarse moduli space construction in terms of Lie groupoids and their principal bundles. With…
Let F_0=B,...,F_n be a sequence of differentiable manifolds, G_i a Lie subgroup of diffeomorphisms of F_i, and H_i a subgroup of G_i central in G_i. We suppose also given a locally trivial bundle p_{K_i} over F_{i-1} which typical fiber is K_i the quotient of G_i by H_i. The aim of this paper is to study the differential geometry of the following problem: classify sequences M_n\to...M_1, where each map from M_i to M_{i-1} is a locally trivial fibration which typical fiber is F_i and which transition functions image are elements of G_i. We associate to this problem a tower of gerbes and define …
We study (pre-)sheaves in bicategories on geometric categories: smooth manifolds, manifolds with a Lie group action and Lie groupoids. We present three main results: we describe equivariant descent, we generalize the plus construction to our setting and show that the plus construction yields a 2-stackification for 2-prestacks. Finally we show that, for a 2-stack, the pullback functor along a Morita-equivalence of Lie groupoids is an equivalence of bicategories. Our results have direct applications to gerbes and 2-vector bundles. For instance, they allow to construct equivariant gerbes from loc…
This is the second in a series of papers intended to set up a framework to study categories of modules in the context of non-commutative geometries. In \cite{mem} we introduced the basic DG category $\Pc_{\A^\bullet}$, the perfect category of $\A^\bullet$, which corresponded to the category of coherent sheaves on a complex manifold. In this paper we enlarge this category to include objects which correspond to quasi-coherent sheaves. We then apply this framework to proving an equivalence of categories between derived categories on the noncommutative complex torus and on a holomorphic gerbe on t…
In this paper, we develop twisted $K$-theory for stacks, where the twisted class is given by an $S^1$-gerbe over the stack. General properties, including the Mayer-Vietoris property, Bott periodicity, and the product structure $K^i_α\otimes K^j_β\to K^{i+j}_{α+β}$ are derived. Our approach provides a uniform framework for studying various twisted $K$-theories including the usual twisted $K$-theory of topological spaces, twisted equivariant $K$-theory, and the twisted $K$-theory of orbifolds. We also present a Fredholm picture, and discuss the conditions under which twisted $K$-groups can be ex…
The caloron correspondence can be understood as an equivalence of categories between $G$-bundles over circle bundles and $LG \rtimes_ρS^1$-bundles where $LG$ is the group of smooth loops in $G$. We use it, and lifting bundle gerbes, to derive an explicit differential form based formula for the (real) string class of an $LG \rtimes_ρS^1$-bundle.
We introduce the notion of cofoliation on a stack. A cofoliation is a change of the differentiable structure which amounts to giving a full representable smooth epimorphism. Cofoliations are uniquely determined by their associated Lie algebroids. Cofoliations on stacks arise from flat connections on groupoids. Connections on groupoids generalize connections on gerbes and bundles in a natural way. A flat connection on a groupoid is an integrable distribution of the morphism space compatible with the groupoid structure and complementary to both source and target fibres. A cofoliation of a stack …
A model structure is defined on the category of derived differentiable schemes, and it is used to analyse the truncation 2-functor from derived manifolds to d-manifolds. It is proved that the induced 1-functor between the homotopy categories is full and essentially surjective, giving a bijection between the sets of equivalence classes of objects. An example is constructed, showing that this 1-functor is not faithful.
This is the second in a series of papers laying the foundations for a differential graded approach to derived differential geometry (and other geometries in characteristic zero). In this paper, we extend the classical notion of a dg-algebra to define, in particular, the notion of a differential graded algebra in the world of C-infinity rings. The opposite of the category of differential graded C-infinity algebras contains the category of differential graded manifolds as a full subcategory. More generally, this notion of differential graded algebra makes sense for algebras over any (super) Ferm…
We develop a description of higher gauge theory with higher groupoids as gauge structure from first principles. This approach captures ordinary gauge theories and gauged sigma models as well as their categorifications on a very general class of (higher) spaces comprising presentable differentiable stacks, as e.g. orbifolds. We start off with a self-contained review on simplicial sets as models of $(\infty,1)$-categories. We then discuss principal bundles in terms of simplicial maps and their homotopies. We explain in detail a differentiation procedure, suggested by Severa, that maps higher gro…
