There are two natural candidates for the group of relative Cheeger-Simons differential characters. The first directly extends the work of Cheeger and Simons and the second extends the description given by Hopkins and Singer of the Cheeger-Simons group as the homology of a certain cochain complex. We study two notions of relative differential cohomology, using the model of differential characters. The two notions arise from the two options to construct relative homology, either by cycles of a quotient complex or of a mapping cone complex. Let h be a rationally even cohomology theory and h^ the natural differential refinement, as defined by Hopkins and Singer. We consider the possible definitions of the relative differential cohomology groups, generalizing the analogous picture for the Deligne cohomology, and we show the corresponding long exact sequence in each case.

In Proc Math Sci 129, 70(219), Rakesh Pawar considers and solves a certain extension problem. In this note, we observe that the existence and uniqueness of differential characters (defined as objects which fit into a hexagon diagram) follow directly from Rakesh Pawar's results. This provides an alternate proof of a weaker version of the results of J. Simons and D. Sullivan, Journal of Topology, 2008, vol 1:45-56. Further this approach directly shows that the hexagon diagram uniquely determines the differential K-theory groups upto an isomorphism.

In this paper we introduce the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of a global quotient orbifold. We prove that the Cheeger-Simons cohomology of the orbifold is isomorphic to its Beilinson-Deligne cohomology. Furthermore we construct a string connection (à la Segal) from a global gerbe with connection over the loop orbifold, refining the corresponding differential character.

The Chern-Dold character of a cohomology theory E is a canonical transformation $E\rightarrow HV$ to ordinary cohomology. A spectrum representing E gives homotopy theoretic cocycles for E, while HV can be represented by singular cocycles. We construct a refinement of the Chern-Dold character to a transformation of the cocycle categories that takes the homotopical composition to the addition of singular cocycles. This is applied to construct additive structures at the level of differential cocycles for generalized differential cohomology.
