We calculate the action of some Hecke operators on spaces of modular forms spanned by the Siegel theta-series of certain genera of strongly modular lattices closely related to the Leech lattice. Their eigenforms provide explicit examples of Siegel cusp forms.
We define Hecke operators on vector valued modular forms transforming with the Weil representation associated to a discriminant form. We describe the properties of the corresponding algebra of Hecke operators and study the action on modular forms.
We calculate the effect of simple Hecke operators on u-expansions of higher rank Drinfeld modular forms, the eigenvalue for the Drinfeld discriminant function $Δ_t$ and show that a certain natural class of Hecke operators is completely multiplicative.
We construct a Taylor-Wiles system using a family of $p$-adically completed modular Jacobians over suitable Hecke algebras and prove that certain $p$-adically completed Mordell-Weil groups of these Jacobians is free of finite rank over a Hecke algebra.
In this paper we determine the explicit structure of the semisimple part of the Hecke algebra that acts on Drinfeld modular forms of full level modulo T . We use computations of the Hecke action modulo T to find Drinfeld modular forms that cannot be eigenforms. Finally, we conjecture that the Hecke algebra that acts on Drinfeld modular forms of full level is not smooth for large weight.
We utilize effective algorithms for computing in the cohomology of a Shimura curve together with the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence to compute systems of Hecke eigenvalues associated to Hilbert modular forms over a totally real field.
We show that, under suitable assumptions, the systems of Hecke eigenvalues arising from (mod p) modular forms of PEL-type associated to an algebraic group G of type A or C coincide with the Hecke eigensystems arising from (mod p) algebraic modular forms for an inner form of G. We treat explicitly the case of unitary groups, and we give in this case an asymptotic formula for the number of eigensystems. The paper generalizes results of J-P. Serre for GL(2) and A. Ghitza for GSp(2g).
We investigate non-vanishing properties of $L(f,s)$ on the real line, when $f$ is a Hecke eigenform of half-integral weight $k+{1\over 2}$ on $Γ_0(4).$
In this paper we outline the Hecke theory for Hermitian modular forms in the sense of Hel Braun for arbitrary class number of the attached imaginary-quadratic number field. The Hecke algebra turns out to be commutative. Its inert part has a structure analogous to the case of the Siegel modular group and coincides with the tensor product of its $p$-components for inert primes $p$. This leads to a characterization of the associated Siegel-Eisenstein series. The proof also involves Hecke theory for particular congruence subgroups.
We show that if an Eisenstein component of the $p$-adic Hecke algebra associated to modular forms is Gorenstein, then it is necessary that the plus-part of a certain ideal class group is trivial. We also show that this condition is sufficient whenever a conjecture of Sharifi holds.
Under mild hypotheses on the residual representation, we prove the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras using a novel combination of the methods of Euler systems and Taylor-Wiles systems. We also prove the compatibility of this conjecture with specialization.
Let F(z) be a newform of weight 2k and level one with a trivial character, and assume that F(z) is a non-zero eigenform of all Hecke operators. In this paper, we study nonvanishing for central values of twisted modular L-function of F.
Let F be a real quadratic field with ring of integers O and with class number 1. Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of GL_2 (O). We describe a technique to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology H^3 (Gamma; C). For F real quadratic this cohomology group contains the cuspidal cohomology corresponding to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. Hence this technique gives a way to compute the Hecke action on these Hilbert modular forms.
A description is given of all primitive differential series mod p of order 1 which are eigenvectors of all the Hecke operators and which are differential Fourier expansions of differential modular forms of arbitrary order and given weight; this set of differential series is shown to be in a natural one-to-one correspondence with the set of series mod p (of order 0) which are eigenvectors of all the Hecke operators and which are Fourier expansions of (classical) modular forms of appropriate weight.
The aim of this article is to give a concise algebraic treatment of the modular symbols formalism, generalised from modular curves to Hecke triangle surfaces. A sketch is included of how the modular symbols formalism gives rise to the standard algorithms for the computation of holomorphic modular forms. Precise and explicit connections are established to the cohomology of Hecke triangle surfaces and group cohomology. In all the note a general commutative ring is used as coefficient ring in view of applications to the computation of modular forms over rings different from the complex numbers. T…
We prove that Cohen's Maass wave form and Li-Ngo-Rhoades' Maass wave form are Hecke eigenforms with respect to certain Hecke operators. As a corollary, we find new identities of the $p$th coefficients of these Maass wave forms in terms of $p$th root of unities.
Matrix representations of Hecke operators on classical holomorphical cusp forms and corresponding period polynomials are well known. In this article we define Hecke operators on period functions and show that they correspond to the Hecke operators on Maass cusp forms. Moreover we give an explicite general compatibility criterion for formal sums of matrices to represent Hecke operators ob period functions. An explicite example with only nonnegative entries in the matrices is constructed.
Given two Siegel eigenforms of different weights, we determine explicit sets of Hecke eigenvalues for the two forms that must be distinct. In degree two, and under some additional conditions, we determine explicit sets of Fourier coefficients of the two forms that must be distinct.
We construct an Euler system of generalized Heegner cycles to bound the Selmer group associated to a modular form and an algebraic Hecke character. The main argument is based on Kolyvagin's machinery explained by Gross while the key object of the Euler system, the generalized Heegner cycles, were first considered by Bertolini, Darmon and Prasanna.
The Galois representations associated to weight $1$ newforms over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ are remarkable in that they are unramified at $p$, but the computation of weight $1$ modular forms has proven to be difficult. One complication in this setting is that a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ need not arise from reducing a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In this article we propose a unified "Hecke stability method" for computing spaces of weight $1$ modular forms of a given level in all characteristics simultaneously. Our main theorems outline conditions under which a f…
A well-known observation of Serre and Tate is that the Hecke algebra acts locally nilpotently on modular forms mod 2 on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We give an algorithm for calculating the degree of Hecke nilpotency for cusp forms, and we obtain a formula for the total number of cusp forms mod 2 of any given degree of nilpotency. Using these results, we find that the degrees of Hecke nilpotency in spaces $M_k$ have no limiting distribution as $k \rightarrow \infty$. As an application, we study the parity of the partition function using Hecke nilpotency.
We define Hilbert-Siegel modular forms and Hecke "operators" acting on them. As with Hilbert modular forms, these linear transformations are not linear operators until we consider a direct product of spaces of modular forms (with varying groups), modulo natural identifications we can make between certain spaces. With Hilbert-Siegel forms we identify several families of natural identifications between certain spaces of modular forms. We associate the Fourier coefficients of a form in our product space to even integral lattices, independent of a basis and choice of coefficient rings. We then det…
We investigate the structure of the Hecke algebras related to the unimodular and modular group over hermitian fields and definite quaternion algebras. In particular we show that in general there is no decomposition into primary components. We can give a set of generators and in some special cases we deduce the law of interchange of the Siegel $Φ$-operator.
This paper answers a question of Gross and others, by exhibiting specific examples of Hecke algebras where mod 2 multiplicity one fails for some modular forms, and the associated Hecke algebras are not Gorenstein. It shows that the methods of Wiles, Gross, Edixhoven, Buzzard, Mazur and others have an upper bound to their applicability.
We study polynomials interpolating the (rational) constant terms of certain meromorphic modular forms for Hecke groups. We make observations about the divisibility properties of the constant terms and connect them to several sequences, for example, to O.E.I.S. sequence A005148 \cite{OEISNewmanShanks}, which was studied by Newman, Shanks and Zagier \cite{newman2004sequence}, \cite{newman2004sequenceAppendix} in an article on its use in series approximations to $π$.
We propose a method for computing approximations to the Hecke eigenvalues of a classical modular eigenform $f$, based on the analytic evaluation of $f$ at points in the upper half plane. Our approach works with arbitrary precision, allows for a strict control of the error in the approximation, and outperforms current exact computation methods.
We survey techniques to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology of arithmetic groups. These techniques can be seen as generalizations in different directions of the classical modular symbol algorithm, due to Manin and Ash-Rudolph. Most of the work is contained in papers of the author and the author with Mark McConnell. Some results are unpublished work of Mark McConnell and Robert MacPherson.
We show that the systems of prime-to-$p$ Hecke eigenvalues arising from automorphic forms$\pmod p$ for a good prime $p$ associated to an algebraic group $G/\mathbb Q$ of Hodge type are the same as those arising from algebraic modular forms$\pmod p$ associated to an inner form of $G$.
For a prime number $q\geq 5$ and a positive integer $N$ prime to $q$, Ribet proved the action of the Hecke algebra on the component group of the Jacobian variety of the modular curve of level $Nq$ at $q$ is "Eisenstein", which means the Hecke operator $T_\ell$ acts by $\ell+1$ when $\ell$ is a prime number not dividing the level. In this paper, we completely compute the action of the Hecke algebra on this component group by a careful study of supersingular points with extra automorphisms.
We derive an explicit upper bound for the number of systems of Hecke eigenvalues coming from Siegel modular forms (mod p) of dimension g and level N relatively prime to p. In the special case of elliptic modular forms (g=1), our result agrees with recent work of G. Herrick.
We correct a mistake in \cite{St} leading to erroneous formulas in Theorems 5.2 and 5.4. As an immediate corollary of a formula in \cite{BCJ} we give a formula, which relates the Hecke operators $T(p^2)\circ T(p^{2l-2})$, $T(p^{2l})$ and $T(p^{2l-4})$ and comment on it.
We introduce an alternate set of generators for the Hecka algebra, and give an explicit formula for the action of these operators on Fourier coefficients. With this, we compute the eigenvalues of Hecke operators acting on average Siegel theta series with half-integral weight (provided the prime associated to the operators does not divide the level of the theta series). Next, we bound the eigenvalues of these operators in terms of bounds on Fourier coefficients. Then we show that the half-integral weight Kitaoka subspace is stable under all Hecke operators. Finally, we observe that an obvious i…
We consider the question of the correlation of Fourier coefficients of modular forms with functions of algebraic origin. We establish the absence of correlation in considerable generality (with a power saving of Burgess type) and a corresponding equidistribution property for twisted Hecke orbits. This is done by exploiting the amplification method and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields, relying in particular on the ell-adic Fourier transform introduced by Deligne and studied by Katz and Laumon.
We formulate some properties of a conjectural object $X_{fun}(r,n)$ parametrizing Anderson t-motives of dimension $n$ and rank $r$. Namely, we give formulas for $\goth p$-Hecke correspondences of $X_{fun}(r,n)$ and its reductions at $\goth p$ (where $\goth p$ is a prime of $\Bbb F_q[θ]$). Also, we describe their geometric interpretation. These results are analogs of the corresponding results of reductions of Shimura varieties. Finally, we give conjectural formulas for Hodge numbers (over the fields generated by Hecke correspondences) of middle cohomology submotives of $X_{fun}(r,n)$.
In this preprint we prove that any finite slope modular form fits into a p-adic family of modular forms which is indexed by the weight. Here, the term p-adic family means that p-adic congruences between weights entail certain p-adic congruences between the corresponding modular forms. We also show that the dimension of the slope subspace of the space of modular forms does not depend on the weight. Both statements are predicted by the Mazur-Gouvea Conjecture, which has been proven by Coleman using methods from rigid analytic geometry. In contrast our proof is based on a comparison of (topologic…
We give a new, simple proof of the trace formula for Hecke operators on modular forms for finite index subgroups of the modular group. The proof uses algebraic properties of certain universal Hecke operators acting on period polynomials of modular forms, and it generalizes an approach developed by Don Zagier and the author for the modular group. This approach leads to a very simple formula for the trace on the space of cusp forms plus the trace on the space of modular forms. As applications, we investigate what happens when varying the weight or the level in the trace formula.
The standard approach to evaluate Hecke eigenvalues of a Siegel modular eigenform F is to determine a large number of Fourier coefficients of F and then compute the Hecke action on those coefficients. We present a new method based on the numerical evaluation of F at explicit points in the upper-half space and of its image under the Hecke operators. The approach is more efficient than the standard method and has the potential for further optimization by identifying good candidates for the points of evaluation, or finding ways of lowering the truncation bound. A limitation of the algorithm is th…
In Monstrous moonshine, genus 0 property and the notion of replicability are strongly connected. With regards to recent developments of moonshine, we investigate a higher genus generalization of replicability for a general automorphic form. Specifically, we extend the definitions of replicates and a Hecke operator to harmonic Maass functions on modular curves of higher genera to obtain number theoretic generalizations of important results in Monstrous moonshine. Furthermore, we show the utility of the extended notions in yielding uniform proofs for numerous arithmetic properties of Fourier coe…
Let $U(p)$ denote the Atkin operator of prime index $p$. Honda and Kaneko proved infinite families of congruences of the form $f|U(p) \equiv 0 \pmod{p}$ for weakly holomorphic modular forms of low weight and level and primes $p$ in certain residue classes, and conjectured the existence of similar congruences modulo higher powers of $p$. Partial results on some of these conjectures were proved recently by Guerzhoy. We construct infinite families of weakly holomorphic modular forms on the Fricke groups $Γ^*(N)$ for $N=1,2,3,4$ and describe explicitly the action of the Hecke algebra on these form…
Let $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$ be a pair of residual, odd, absolutely irreducible two-dimensional Galois representations of a totally real number field $F$. In this article we propose a conjecture asserting existence of "safe" chains of compatible systems of Galois representations linking $ρ_1$ to $ρ_2$. Such conjecture implies the generalized Serre's conjecture and is equivalent to Serre's conjecture under a modular version of it. We prove a weak version of the modular variant using the connectedness of certain Hecke algebras, and we comment on possible applications of these results to establish some ca…
Let $F$ be the element $\sum_{n\ \mathit{odd},\ n>0}x^{n^{2}}$ of $Z/2[[x]]$. Set $G=F(x^{5})$, $D=F(x)+F(x^{25})$. For $k>0$, $(k,10)=1$, define $D_{k}$ as follows. $D_{1}=D$, $D_{3}=D^{8}/G$, $D_{7}=D^{2}G$, $D_{9}=D^{4}G$; furthermore $D_{k+10}=G^{2}D_{k}$. Using modular forms of level $Γ_{0}(5)$ we show that the space $W$ spanned by the $D_{k}$ is stabilized by the formal Hecke operators $T_{p}:Z/2[[x]]\rightarrow Z/2[[x]]$, $p\ne 2$ or $5$. And we determine the structure of the (completed) shallow Hecke algebra attached to $W$. This algebra proves to be a power series ring in $T_{3}$ and …
Extending work of J. Raleigh, we compute polynomials $P_{n,F}(x)$ associated to certain families $F = \{f_m\}_{m = 3, 4, ...}$ of modular forms for Hecke groups $G(λ_m)$ with the property that $P_{n,F}(m)$ is the $n^{th}$ coefficient in the Fourier expansion of $f_m$. We express the $P_{n,F}$ in terms of the Fourier expansions of well-known Hauptmoduln, or in terms of certain divisor-sums. By studying the complex roots of the $P_n$, we relate them to Lehmer's question about Ramanujan's tau function. We review the theory of triangle functions and Hecke's theory of modular forms in order to esta…
In \cite{Shimura}, Shimura introduced modular forms of half-integral weight, their Hecke algebras and their relation to integral weight modular forms via the Shimura correspondence. For modular forms of integral weight, Sturm's bounds give generators of the Hecke algebra as a module. We also have well-known recursion formulae for the operators $T_{p^\ell}$ with $p$ prime. It is the purpose of this paper to prove analogous results in the half-integral weight setting. We also give an explicit formula for how operators $T_{p^{\ell}}$ commute with the Shimura correspondence.
Modular forms mod 2 : structure of the Hecke ring We show that the Hecke algebra for modular forms mod 2 of level 1 is isomorphic to the power series ring F2[[x, y]], where x = T3 and y = T5.
We consider cuspidal representations in spaces of automorphic forms for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(I)$ of Hilbert modular groups for some number field $F$. To each such representation are associated the eigenvalue $λ_j$ of the Casimir operator at each real place $j$ of $F$, and the number $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ parametrizing the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak p^2}$ at each finite place $\mathfrak p$ outside the ideal $I$. We study the joint distribution of the $λ_j$ for all real places $j$, and the $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ for finitely many $\mathfrak p$ outside $I$, over the cuspida…
We prove multiplicity one for vector valued holomorphic Siegel modular forms of weights greater or equal to 3 and the full Siegel modular group and give a trace formula for the action of the Hecke operators T(p) in the regular cases.
Albeit essential corrections are required both in his claim and in his argument, N.V. Kuznetsov observed in his Bombay article (*) of 1989 a highly interesting transformation formula for spectral sums of products of four values of modular Hecke L-functions. A complete proof of a corrected version of the formula was later supplied by the present author in 1991, which has, however, remained unpublished for more than a decade, except for a limited distribution. The aim of the present paper is to reproduce this proof of the author with some sophistications, retaining the original style as much as …
It is shown that extremal $2$-modular lattices of ranks $32$ and $48$ are generated by their vectors of minimal norm. In the proof, we use certain properties of the difference of normalized Hecke eigenforms. We refer to them as the pseudo-normalized Hecke eigenform, the concept of which is introduced in this paper.
We express a family of Hecke--Appell-type sums of Hikami and Lovejoy in terms of mixed mock modular forms; in particular, we express the sums in terms of Appell functions and theta functions. Hikami and Lovejoy's family of Hecke--Appell-type sums was obtained by considering certain duals of generalized quantum modular forms.
