In 1977, Keane and Smorodinsky showed that there exists a finitary homomorphism from any finite-alphabet Bernoulli process to any other finite-alphabet Bernoulli process of strictly lower entropy. In 1996, Serafin proved the existence of a finitary homomorphism with finite expected coding length. In this paper, we construct such a homomorphism in which the coding length has exponential tails. Our construction is source-universal, in the sense that it does not use any information on the source distribution other than the alphabet size and a bound on the entropy gap between the source and target distributions. We also indicate how our methods can be extended to prove a source-specific version of the result for Markov chains.
Suppose that the vertices of ${\mathbb Z}^d$ are assigned random colors via a finitary factor of independent identically distributed (iid) vertex-labels. That is, the color of vertex $v$ is determined by a rule that examines the labels within a finite (but random and perhaps unbounded) distance $R$ of $v$, and the same rule applies at all vertices. We investigate the tail behavior of $R$ if the coloring is required to be proper (that is, if adjacent vertices must receive different colors). When $d\geq 2$, the optimal tail is given by a power law for 3 colors, and a tower (iterated exponential)…
It has been shown by van den Berg and Steif that the sub-critical Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is a finitary factor of a finite-valued i.i.d. process. We strengthen this by showing that the factor map can be made to have finite expected coding volume (in fact, stretched-exponential tails), answering a question of van den Berg and Steif. The result holds at any temperature above the critical temperature. An analogous result holds for Markov random fields satisfying a high-noise assumption and for proper colorings with a large number of colors.
We consider a particle system on $Z^d$ with finite state space and interactions of infinite range. Assuming that the rate of change is continuous and decays sufficiently fast, we introduce a perfect simulation algorithm for the stationary process. The algorithm follows from a representation of the multicolor system as a finitary coding from a sequence of independent uniform random variables. This implies that the process is exponentially ergodic. The basic tool we use is a representation of the infinite range change rates as a mixture of finite range change rates.
It has been shown by van den Berg and Steif that the sub-critical and critical Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process (ffiid), whereas the super-critical model is not. In fact, they showed that the latter is a general phenomenon in that a phase transition presents an obstruction for being ffiid. The question remained whether this is the only such obstruction. We make progress on this, showing that certain spatial mixing conditions (notions of weak dependence on boundary conditions, not to be confused with other notions of mixing in ergodic theory) imply ffiid. …
A random field $X = (X_v)_{v \in G}$ on a quasi-transitive graph $G$ is a factor of i.i.d. if it can be written as $X=φ(Y)$ for some i.i.d. process $Y= (Y_v)_{v \in G}$ and equivariant map $φ$. Such a map, also called a coding, is finitary if, for every vertex $v \in G$, there exists a finite (but random) set $U \subset G$ such that $X_v$ is determined by $\{Y_u\}_{u \in U}$. We construct a coding for the random-cluster model on $G$, and show that the coding is finitary whenever the free and wired measures coincide. This strengthens a result of Häggström--Jonasson--Lyons. We also prove that th…
Holroyd and Liggett recently proved the existence of a stationary 1-dependent 4-coloring of the integers, the first stationary k-dependent q-coloring for any k and q. That proof specifies a consistent family of finite-dimensional distributions, but does not yield a probabilistic construction on the whole integer line. Here we prove that the process can be expressed as a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process. The factor is described explicitly, and its coding radius obeys power-law tail bounds.
We show that a large class of stationary continuous-time regenerative processes are finitarily isomorphic to one another. The key is showing that any stationary renewal point process whose jump distribution is absolutely continuous with exponential tails is finitarily isomorphic to a Poisson point process. We further give simple necessary and sufficient conditions for a renewal point process to be finitarily isomorphic to a Poisson point process. This improves results and answers several questions of Soo and of Kosloff and Soo.

We show that oriented percolation occurs whenever a condition is satisfied called "exponential intersection tails". This condition says that a measure on paths exists for which the probability of two independent paths intersecting in more than k sites is exponentially small in k.
We present explicit estimates of right and left tails and exact (up to universal, multiplicative constants) estimates of tails and moments of hitting times of Bessel processes. The latter estimates are obtained from more general estimates of moments and tails established for convolutions of elementary mixtures of exponential distributions.
We study the tail behavior for the maximum of discrete Gaussian free field on a 2D box with Dirichlet boundary condition after centering by its expectation. We show that it exhibits an exponential decay for the right tail and a double exponential decay for the left tail. In particular, our result implies that the variance of the maximum is of order 1, improving an $o(\log n)$ bound by Chatterjee (2008) and confirming a folklore conjecture. An important ingredient for our proof is a result of Bramson and Zeitouni (2010), who proved the tightness of the centered maximum together with an evaluati…
We present in this paper the Banach space representation for the set of random finite-dimensional vectors with exponential decreasing tails of distributions. We show that there are at last three types of these multidimensional Banach spaces, i.e. which can completely describe the random vectors with exponential decreasing tails of distributions: exponential Orlicz spaces, Young spaces and Grand Lebesgue spaces. We discuss in the last section the possible applications of obtained results.
We find the exponential exact two-terms non-asymptotic expression for the maximum and minimum distribution of a non-Gaussian, in general case, random vector.
We study the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) in the so-called mixed (anisotropic) Lebesgue-Riesz spaces and tail behavior of normed sums of centered random independent variables (vectors) with values in these spaces.
We study the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) in the so-called hybrid Lebesgue-continuous spaces and tail behavior of normed sums of centered random independent variables (vectors) with values in these spaces.
We determine the rate of decrease of the right tail distribution of the exponential functional of a Levy process with a convolution equivalent Levy measure. Our main result establishes that it decreases as the right tail of the image under the exponential function of the Levy measure of the underlying Levy process. The method of proof relies on fluctuation theory of Levy processes and an explicit path-wise representation of the exponential functional as the exponential functional of a bivariate subordinator. Our techniques allow us to establish rather general estimates of the measure of the ex…
We study the random variables (r.v.) with values in the so-called mixed (anisotropic) Lebesgue-Riesz spaces: formulate the sufficient conditions for belonging of the r.v. to these spaces, estimate the tail of norms distribution, especially deduce the exponential decreasing tails of them, etc. We obtain as a consequence the estimations of the norms of random integral operators acting between these spaces.
We provide exact large-time equivalents of the density and upper tail distributions of the exponential functional of a subordinator in terms of its Laplace exponents. This improves previous results on the logarithmic asymptotic behaviour of the upper tail. Since the results in their general form remain rather abstract, we study some fairly common situations in details to see how the behavior near 0 of the Lévy measure of the subordinator influences the asymptotics of the density and upper tail distributions. Several examples of applications are then discussed.
The Hoeffding-type-inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical (degenerate) U- and V-statistics of an arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of observations satisfying $ρ$-mixing.
Hoeffding-type exponential inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical von Mises' statistics of arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of random variables satisfying the φ-mixing condition. The present paper weakens the restrictions on the coefficient φ() which are contained in the paper "Exponential inequalities for the distributions of canonical U- and V-statistics of dependent observations" by Borisov and Volodko (2009). At the same time, we correct the corresponding proof in this paper.
We establish uniform sub-exponential tail bounds for the width, height and maximal outdegree of critical Bienaymé-Galton-Watson trees conditioned on having a large fixed size, whose offspring distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law. This extends results obtained for the height and width by Addario-Berry, Devroye & Janson in the finite variance case.
We study the one-dimensional branching random walk in the case when the step size distribution has a stretched exponential tail, and, in particular, no finite exponential moments. The tail of the step size $X$ decays as $\mathbb{P}[X \geq t] \sim a \exp(-λt^r)$ for some constants $a, λ> 0$ where $r \in (0,1)$. We give a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of the position of the rightmost particle, proving almost-sure limit theorems, convergence in law and some integral tests. The limit theorems reveal interesting differences betweens the two regimes $ r \in (0, 2/3)$ and $ r \in (…
Extremal clusters of stationary processes with long memory can be quite intricate. For certain stationary infinitely divisible processes with subexponential tails, including both power-like tails and certain lighter tails, e.g. lognormal-like tails, such clusters may take the shape of stable regenerative sets. In this paper we show that for semi-exponential tails, which are even lighter, a new shape of extremal clusters arises. In this case each stable regenerative set supports a random panoply of varying extremes.
We study moderate deviations in the exponential corner growth model, both in the bulk setting and the increment-stationary setting. The main results are sharp right-tail bounds on the last-passage time and the exit point of the increment-stationary process. The arguments utilize calculations with the stationary version and a moment generating function identity due to E. Rains, for which we give a short probabilistic proof. As applications of the deviation bounds, we derive upper bounds on the speed of distributional convergence in the Busemann function and competition interface limits.
In this paper we present various new inequalities for tail proabilities for distributions that are elements of the most improtant exponential families. These families include the Poisson distributions, the Gamma distributions, the binomial distributions, the negative binomial distributions and the inverse Gaussian distributions. All these exponential families have simple variance functions and the variance functions play an important role in the exposition. All the inequalities presented in this paper are formulated in terms of the signed log-likelihood. The inequalities are of a qualitative n…
We obtain the quite exact exponential bounds for tails of distributions of sums of Banach space valued random variables uniformly over the number of summands under natural for the Law of Iterated Logarithm (LIL) norming. We study especially the case of the so-called mixed (anisotropic) Lebesgue-Riesz spaces, on the other words, Bochner's spaces, for instance, continuous-Lebesgue spaces, which appear for example in the investigation of non-linear Partial Differential Equations of evolutionary type. We give also some examples in order to show the exactness of our estimates.
This is the first of a three paper series in which we present a comprehensive study of the extreme value theory of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field. This model was introduced by Arguin and Ouimet who computed the first order of the maximum. In this first paper we establish tail estimates for the maximum value, which allow to deduce the log-correction to the order of the maximum and tightness of the centred maximum. Our proofs are based on the second moment method and Gaussian comparison techniques.
A {\it scenery} is a coloring $ξ$ of the integers. Let $\{S_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ be a recurrent random walk on the integers. Observing the scenery $ξ$ along the path of this random walk, one sees the color $χ_t:=ξ(S_t)$ at time $t$. The {\it scenery reconstruction problem} is concerned with recovering the scenery $ξ$, given only the sequence of observations $χ:=(χ_t)_{t\geq 0}$. The scenery reconstruction methods presented to date require the random walk to have bounded increments. Here, we present a new approach for random walks with unbounded increments which works when the tail of the increment d…
In this paper non-asymptotic exponential estimates are derived for tail of maximum martingale distribution by naturally norming in the spirit of the classical Law of Iterated Logarithm. Key words: Martingales, exponential estimations, moment, Banach spaces of random variables, tail of distribution, conditional expectation.
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables (not necessarily identically distributed), and $η$ be a counting random variable independent of this sequence. We obtain sufficient conditions on $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ and $η$ under which the distribution function of the random sum $S_η=ξ_1+ξ_2+\cdots+ξ_η$ belongs to the class of $\mathcal{O}$-exponential distributions.
We prove large deviation results for the position of the rightmost particle, denoted by $M_n$, in a one-dimensional branching random walk in a case when Cramér's condition is not satisfied. More precisely we consider step size distributions with stretched exponential upper and lower tails, i.e.~both tails decay as $e^{-|t|^r}$ for some $r\in( 0,1)$. It is known that in this case, $M_n$ grows as $n^{1/r}$ and in particular faster than linearly in $n$. Our main result is a large deviation principle for the laws of $n^{-1/r}M_n$ . In the proof we use a comparison with the maximum of (a random num…
We study the large deviation probabilities of infinite weighted sums of independent random variables that have stretched exponential tails. This generalizes Kiesel and Stadtmüller (2000), who study the same objects under the assumption of finite exponential moments, and Gantert et al.\ (2014), who study finite weighted sums with stretched exponential tails.
Let $X$ be lognormal$(μ,σ^2)$ with density $f(x)$, let $θ>0$ and define ${L}(θ)=E e^{-θX}$. We study properties of the exponentially tilted density (Esscher transform) $f_θ(x) =e^{-θx}f(x)/{L}(θ)$, in particular its moments, its asymptotic form as $θ\to\infty$ and asymptotics for the Cramér function; the asymptotic formulas involve the Lambert W function. This is used to provide two different numerical methods for evaluating the left tail probability of lognormal sum $S_n=X_1+\cdots+X_n$: a saddlepoint approximation and an exponential twisting importance sampling estimator. For the latter we d…
Consider a Lamperti-Kiu Markov additive process $(J_t,ξ_t:t\geq0)$ on $\{+,-\}\times\mathbb{R}\cup\infty$ where $J$ is the modulating Markov chain component. First, we study the finiteness of the exponential functional and then consider its moments and tail asymptotics under Cramer's condition. In the strong subexponential case we determine the subexponential tails of the exponential functional under some further assumptions.
We offer in this paper the non-asymptotical bilateral sharp exponential estimates for tail of maximum distribution of {\it discontinuous} random fields. Our consideration based on the theory of Prokhorov-Skorokhod spaces of random fields and on the theory of multivariate Banach spaces of random variables with exponential decreasing tails of distributions.
In this paper we consider the first passage percolation with identical and independent exponentially distributions, called the Eden growth model, and we study the upper tail large deviations for the first passage time ${\rm T}$. Our main results prove that for any $ξ>0$ and $x\neq 0$, $\mathbb{P}({\rm T}(0,nx)>n(μ+ξ))$ decays as $\exp{(-(2dξ+o(1))n)}$ with a time constant $μ$ and a dimension $d$. Moreover, we extend the result to stretched exponential distributions. On the contrary, we construct a continuous distribution with a finite exponential moment where the rate function does not exist.
Multiclass open queueing networks find wide applications in communication, computer and fabrication networks. Often one is interested in steady-state performance measures associated with these networks. Conceptually, under mild conditions, a regenerative structure exists in multiclass networks, making them amenable to regenerative simulation for estimating the steady-state performance measures. However, typically, identification of a regenerative structure in these networks is difficult. A well known exception is when all the interarrival times are exponentially distributed, where the instants…
One of the key performance measures in queueing systems is the exponential decay rate of the steady-state tail probabilities of the queue lengths. It is known that if a corresponding fluid model is stable and the stochastic primitives have finite moments, then the queue lengths also have finite moments, so that the tail probability \pr(\cdot >s) decays faster than s^{-n} for any n. It is natural to conjecture that the decay rate is in fact exponential. In this paper an example is constructed to demonstrate that this conjecture is false. For a specific stationary policy applied to a network wit…
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables. In this paper, the sufficient conditions are found under which the tail probability $\mathbb{P}(\sup_{n\geqslant0}\sum_{i=1}^nξ_i>x)$ can be bounded above by $\varrho_1\exp\{-\varrho_2x\}$ with some positive constants $\varrho_1$ and $\varrho_2$. A way to calculate these two constants is presented. The application of the derived bound is discussed and a Lundberg-type inequality is obtained for the ultimate ruin probability in the inhomogeneous renewal risk model satisfying the ne…
We derive exponential bounds for tail of distribution for natural, i.e. under ordinary logarithm, normalized sums of arrays of random variables, not necessarily independent.
Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\Z^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequenc…
We establish an exponential inequality for degenerated $U$-statistics of order $r$ of i.i.d. data. This inequality gives a control of the tail of the maxima absolute values of the $U$-statistic by the sum of two terms: an exponential term and one involving the tail of $h\left(X_1,\dots,X_r\right)$. We also give a version for not necessarily degenerated $U$-statistics having a symmetric kernel and furnish an application to the convergence rates in the Marcinkiewicz law of large numbers. Application to invariance principle in Hölder spaces is also considered.
A catalytic branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice, with arbitrary finite number of catalysts, is studied in supercritical regime. The dynamics of spatial spread of the particles population is examined, upon normalization. The components of the vector random walk jump are assumed independent (or close to independent) and have semi-exponential distributions with, possibly, different parameters. A limit theorem on the almost sure normalized positions of the particles at the population ``front'' is established. Contrary to the case of the random walk increments with ``light'' distrib…
In this paper non-asymptotic exponential estimates are derived for the tail distribution of polynomial martingale differences in terms unconditional tails distributions of summands. Applications are considered in the theory of polynomials on independent random variables, to the theory of U-statistics, multiply martingale series and in the theory of weak compactness measures on the Banach spaces. Consider an multidimensional obliquely reflected Brownian motion in the positive orthant, or, more generally, in a convex polyhedral cone. We find sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution and convergence to this distribution at the exponential rate, as time goes to infinity. We also prove that certain exponential moments for this distribution are finite, thus providing a tail estimate for this distribution. Finally, we apply these results to systems of rank-based competing Brownian particles.
We present a proof of an upper tail bound of the correct order (up to a constant factor in the exponent) in two classes of stationary models in the KPZ universality class. The proof is based on an exponential identity due to Rains in the case of Last Passage Percolation with exponential weights, and recently re-derived by Emrah-Jianjigian-Seppäiläinen (EJS). Our proof follows very similar lines for the two classes of models we consider, using only general monotonocity and convexity properties, and can thus be expected to apply to many other stationary models.
Consider the partition function of a directed polymer in an IID field. We assume that both tails of the negative and the positive part of the field are at least as light as exponential. It is a well-known fact that the free energy of the polymer is equal to a deterministic constant for almost every realization of the field and that the upper tail of the large deviations is exponential. The lower tail of the large deviations is typically lighter than exponential. In this paper we provide a method to obtain estimates on the rate of decay of the lower tail of the large deviations, which are sharp…
We derive in this short report the exponential as well as power decreasing tail estimations for the sums of centered exchangeable random variables, alike ones for the sums of the centered independent ones.
We study in details the isoperimetric profile of product probability measures with tails between the exponential and the Gaussian regime. In particular we exhibit many examples where coordinate half-spaces are approximate solutions of the isoperimetric problem.
In this paper non-asymptotic exact exponential estimates are derived for the tail of maximum distribution of random field in the terms of majoring measures or, equally, generic chaining.
