We show that oriented percolation occurs whenever a condition is satisfied called "exponential intersection tails". This condition says that a measure on paths exists for which the probability of two independent paths intersecting in more than k sites is exponentially small in k.
This paper presents a new, short proof of the computation of the upper tail large deviation rate function for the Brownian directed percolation model. Through a distributional equivalence between the last passage time in this model and the largest eigenvalue in a random matrix drawn from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, this provides a new proof a previously known result. The method leads to associated results for the stationary Brownian directed percolation model which have not been observed before.
We consider last-passage percolation models in two dimensions, in which the underlying weight distribution has a heavy tail of index alpha<2. We prove scaling laws and asymptotic distributions, both for the passage times and for the shape of optimal paths; these are expressed in terms of a family (indexed by alpha) of "continuous last-passage percolation" models in the unit square. In the extreme case alpha=0 (corresponding to a distribution with slowly varying tail) the asymptotic distribution of the optimal path can be represented by a random self-similar measure on [0,1], whose multifractal…
In this paper we consider the first passage percolation with identical and independent exponentially distributions, called the Eden growth model, and we study the upper tail large deviations for the first passage time ${\rm T}$. Our main results prove that for any $ξ>0$ and $x\neq 0$, $\mathbb{P}({\rm T}(0,nx)>n(μ+ξ))$ decays as $\exp{(-(2dξ+o(1))n)}$ with a time constant $μ$ and a dimension $d$. Moreover, we extend the result to stretched exponential distributions. On the contrary, we construct a continuous distribution with a finite exponential moment where the rate function does not exist.
We consider oriented long-range percolation on a graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}^d \times \mathbb{Z}_+$ and directed edges of the form $\langle (x,t), (x+y,t+1)\rangle$, for $x,y$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $t \in \mathbb{Z}_+$. Any edge of this form is open with probability $p_y$, independently for all edges. Under the assumption that the values $p_y$ do not vanish at infinity, we show that there is percolation even if all edges of length more than $k$ are deleted, for $k$ large enough. We also state the analogous result for a long-range contact process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
We study moderate deviations in the exponential corner growth model, both in the bulk setting and the increment-stationary setting. The main results are sharp right-tail bounds on the last-passage time and the exit point of the increment-stationary process. The arguments utilize calculations with the stationary version and a moment generating function identity due to E. Rains, for which we give a short probabilistic proof. As applications of the deviation bounds, we derive upper bounds on the speed of distributional convergence in the Busemann function and competition interface limits.
It is shown that oriented random walk on the Heisenberg group admits exponential intersection tail. As a corollary we get that on any transitive graph of polynomial volume growth, which is not a finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}, \mathbb{Z}^2$, the infinite cluster of percolation with retention parameter $p$, close enough to $1$, is transient.
We consider planar stationary exponential Last Passage Percolation in the positive quadrant with boundary weights. For $ρ\in (0,1)$ and points $v_N=((1-ρ)^2 N,ρ^2 N)$ going to infinity along the characteristic direction, we establish right tail estimates with the optimal exponent for the exit time of the geodesic, along with optimal exponent estimates for the upper tail moderate deviations for the passage time. For the case $ρ=\frac{1}{2}$ in the stationary model, we establish the lower bound estimate with the optimal exponent for the lower tail of the passage time. Our arguments are based on …
The areas under workload process and under queuing process in a single server queue over the busy period have many applications not only in queuing theory but also in risk theory or percolation theory. We focus here on the tail behaviour of distribution of these two integrals. We present various open problems and conjectures, which are supported by partial results for some special cases.
We prove several facts concerning Lipschitz percolation, including the following. The critical probability p_L for the existence of an open Lipschitz surface in site percolation on Z^d with d\ge 2 satisfies the improved bound p_L \le 1-1/[8(d-1)]. Whenever p > p_L, the height of the lowest Lipschitz surface above the origin has an exponentially decaying tail. The lowest surface is dominated stochastically by the boundary of a union of certain independent, identically distributed random subsets of Z^d. As a consequence, for p sufficiently close to 1, the connected regions of Z^{d-1} above which…
In this paper, we study some properties of optimal paths in the first passage percolation on $\Z^d$ and show the followings: (1) the number of optimal paths has an exponential growth if the distribution has an atom; (2) the means of intersection and union of optimal paths are linear in the distance. For the proofs, we use the configuration--flipping argument introduced in [J. van den Berg and H. Kesten. Inequalities for the time constant in first-passage percolation. Ann. Appl. Probab. 56-80, 1993] with suitable adaptions.
In this paper, we obtain optimal uniform lower tail estimates for the probability distribution of the properly scaled length of the longest up/right path of the last passage site percolation model considered by Johansson in [12]. The estimates are used to prove a lower tail moderate deviation result for the model. The estimates also imply the convergence of moments, and also provide a verification of the universal scaling law relating the longitudinal and the transversal fluctuations of the model.
We consider the first passage percolation model on the ${\bf Z}^d$ lattice. In this model, we assign independently to each edge $e$ a non-negative passage time $t(e)$ with a common distribution $F$. Let $a_{0,n}$ be the passage time from the origin to $(n,0,..., 0)$. Under the exponential tail assumption, Kesten (1993) and Talagrand (1995) investigated the concentration of $a_{0,n}$ from its mean using different methods. With this concentration and the exponential tail assumption, Alexander gave an estimate for the convergence rate for ${\bf E} a_{0,n}$. In this paper, focusing on a moment con…
Consider independent long range percolation on $\mathbf{Z}^2$, where horizontal and vertical edges of length $n$ are open with probability $p_n$. We show that if $\limsup_{n\to\infty}p_n>0,$ then there exists an integer $N$ such that $P_N(0\leftrightarrow \infty)>0$, where $P_N$ is the truncated measure obtained by taking $p_{N,n}=p_n$ for $n \leq N$ and $p_{N,n}=0$ for all $n> N$.
We answer a question of Ahlberg and Steif (2014) by finding the tail behaviour of the crossing probability in near-critical planar percolation. Interestingly, this superexponentially small behaviour is different from the case of dynamical percolation, where the analogous tail probability was proved to be at least exponential and at most superpolynomial by Hammond, Mossel and Pete (2012). The proof is simple, given the scale covariance established by Garban, Pete and Schramm (2013).
In invasion percolation, the edges of successively maximal weight (the outlets) divide the invasion cluster into a chain of ponds separated by outlets. On the regular tree, the ponds are shown to grow exponentially, with law of large numbers, central limit theorem and large deviation results. The tail asymptotics for a fixed pond are also studied and are shown to be related to the asymptotics of a critical percolation cluster, with a logarithmic correction.
Let $T$ be a random ergodic pseudometric over $\mathbb R^d$. This setting generalizes the classical \emph{first passage percolation} (FPP) over $\mathbb Z^d$. We provide simple conditions on $T$, the decay of instant one-arms and exponential quasi-independence, that ensure the positivity of its time constants, that is almost surely, the pseudo-distance given by $T$ from the origin is asymptotically a norm. Combining this general result with previously known ones, we prove that The known phase transition for Gaussian percolation in the case of fields with positive correlations with exponentiall…
The asymptotics of the probability that the self-intersection local time of a random walk on $\Z^d$ exceeds its expectation by a large amount is a fascinating subject because of its relation to some models from Statistical Mechanics, to large-deviation theory and variational analysis and because of the variety of the effects that can be observed. However, the proof of the upper bound is notoriously difficult and requires various sophisticated techniques. We survey some heuristics and some recently elaborated techniques and results. This is an extended summary of a talk held on the CIRM-confere…
For first passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with i.i.d. bounded edge weights, we consider the upper tail large deviation event; i.e., the rare situation where the first passage time between two points at distance $n$, is macroscopically larger than typical. It was shown by Kesten (1986) that the probability of this event decays as $\exp (-Θ(n^2))$. However the question of existence of the rate function i.e., whether the log-probability normalized by $n^2$ tends to a limit, had remained open. We show that under some additional mild regularity assumption on the passage time distribution, the…
In high dimensional percolation at parameter $p < p_c$, the one-arm probability $π_p(n)$ is known to decay exponentially on scale $(p_c - p)^{-1/2}$. We show the same statement for the ratio $π_p(n) / π_{p_c}(n)$, establishing a form of a hypothesis of scaling theory. As part of our study, we provide sharp estimates (with matching upper and lower bounds) for several quantities of interest at the critical probability $p_c$. These include the tail behavior of volumes of, and chemical distances within, spanning clusters, along with the scaling of the two-point function at "mesoscopic distance" fr…
Consider first passage percolation with identical and independent weight distributions and first passage time ${\rm T}$. In this paper, we study the upper tail large deviations $\mathbb{P}({\rm T}(0,nx)>n(μ+ξ))$, for $ξ>0$ and $x\neq 0$ with a time constant $μ$ and a dimension $d$, for weights that satisfy a tail assumption $ β_1\exp{(-αt^r)}\leq \mathbb P(τ_e>t)\leq β_2\exp{(-αt^r)}.$ When $r\leq 1$ (this includes the well-known Eden growth model), we show that the upper tail large deviation decays as $\exp{(-(2dξ+o(1))n)}$. When $1< r\leq d$, we find that the rate function can be naturally d…
We study large deviations for the renormalized self-intersection local time of d-dimensional stable processes of index β\in (2d/3,d]. We find a difference between the upper and lower tail. In addition, we find that the behavior of the lower tail depends critically on whether β<d or β=d.
We prove exponential concentration in i.i.d. first-passage percolation in $Z^d$ for all $d \geq 2$ and general edge-weights $(t_e)$. Precisely, under an exponential moment assumption $E e^{αt_e}< \infty$ for some $α>0$) on the edge-weight distribution, we prove the inequality $$ P(|T(0,x)-E T(0,x)| \geq λ\sqrt{\frac{|x|}{log |x|}}) \leq ce^{-c' λ}, |x|>1 $$ for the point-to-point passage time $T(0,x)$. Under a weaker assumption $E t_e^2(\log t_e)_+< \infty$ we show a corresponding inequality for the lower-tail of the distribution of $T(0,x)$. These results extend work of Benaim-Rossignol to ge…
Consider a Markov process ω_t at equilibrium and some event C (a subset of the state-space of the process). A natural measure of correlations in the process is the pairwise correlation \Pr[ω_0,ω_t \in C] - \Pr[ω_0 \in C]^2. A second natural measure is the probability of the continual occurrence event \{ω_s \in C, \forall s\in [0,t]\}. We show that for reversible Markov chains, and any event C, pairwise decorrelation of the event C implies a decay of the probability of the continual occurrence event \{ω_s \in C, \forall s \in [0,t]\} as t\to\infty. We provide examples showing that our results a…
We consider a continuum percolation model on $\R^d$, $d\geq 1$.For $t,λ\in (0,\infty)$ and $d\in\{1,2,3\}$, the occupied set is given by the union of independent Brownian paths running up to time $t$ whoseinitial points form a Poisson point process with intensity $λ\textgreater{}0$.When $d\geq 4$, the Brownian paths are replaced by Wiener sausageswith radius $r\textgreater{}0$.We establish that, for $d=1$ and all choices of $t$, no percolation occurs, whereas for $d\geq 2$, there is a non-trivial percolation transitionin $t$, provided $λ$ and $r$ are chosen properly. The last statement means tha…
We consider the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented site percolation in dimension 1 +1. A directed random walk on this backbone can be seen as an "ancestral line" of an individual sampled in the stationary discrete-time contact process. Such ancestral lineages were investigated in [BCDG13] where a central limit theorem for a single walker was proved. Here, we consider infinitely many coalescing walkers on the same backbone starting at each space-time point. We show that, after diffusive rescaling, the collection of paths converges in distribution to the Brownia…
We present a proof of an upper tail bound of the correct order (up to a constant factor in the exponent) in two classes of stationary models in the KPZ universality class. The proof is based on an exponential identity due to Rains in the case of Last Passage Percolation with exponential weights, and recently re-derived by Emrah-Jianjigian-Seppäiläinen (EJS). Our proof follows very similar lines for the two classes of models we consider, using only general monotonocity and convexity properties, and can thus be expected to apply to many other stationary models.
Given a recursive distributional equation (RDE) and a solution $μ$ of it, we consider the tree indexed invariant process called the recursive tree process (RTP) with marginal $μ$. We introduce a new type of bivariate uniqueness property which is different from the one defined by Aldous and Bandyopadhyay (2005), and we prove that this property is equivalent to tail-triviality for the RTP, thus obtaining a necessary and sufficient condition to determine tail-triviality for a RTP in general. As an application we consider Aldous' (2000) construction of the frozen percolation process on a infinite …
Directed last passage percolation models on the plane, where one studies the weight as well as the geometry of optimizing paths (called polymers) in a field of i.i.d. weights, are paradigm examples of models in the KPZ universality class. In this article, we consider the large deviation regime, i.e., when the polymer has a much smaller (lower tail) or larger (upper tail) weight than typical. Precise asymptotics of large deviation probabilities have been obtained in a handful of the so-called exactly solvable scenarios, including the Exponential (Johansson, '00) and Poissonian (Seppäläinen, '98…
