This paper is concerned with ideals in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic. The main purpose is to show that the Frobenius closures of certain ideals of $R$ generated by regular sequences exhibit a desirable type of `uniform' behaviour. The principal technical tool used is a result, proved by R. Hartshorne and R. Speiser in the case where $R$ is local and contains its residue field which is perfect, and subsequently extended to all local rings of prime characteristic by G. Lyubeznik, about a left module over the skew polynomial ring $R[x,f]$ (associated to $R$ and the Frobenius homomorphism $f$, in the indeterminate $x$) that is both $x$-torsion and Artinian over $R$.
This paper studies Frobenius maps on injective hulls of residue fields of complete local rings with a view toward providing constructive descriptions of objects originating from the theory of tight closure. Specifically, the paper describes algorithms for computing parameter test ideals, and tight closure of certain submodules of the injective hull of residue fields of a class of well-behaved rings which includes all quasi-Gorenstein complete local rings.
The study of Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules over a local ring of prime characteristic has interesting connections with the theory of tight closure. This paper establishes new connections by developing the notion of relative Frobenius actions on local cohomology. As an application, we show that a ring has $F$-nilpotent singularities if and only if the tight closure of every parameter ideal is equal to its Frobenius closure.
This paper is concerned with the tight closure of an ideal in a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$. Several authors, including R. Fedder, K.-i. Watanabe, K. E. Smith, N. Hara and F. Enescu, have used the natural Frobenius action on the top local cohomology module of such an $R$ to good effect in the study of tight closure, and this paper uses that device. The main part of the paper develops a theory of what are here called 'special annihilator submodules' of a left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring associated to $R$; this theory is then applied in th…
Let $(R,\frak m)$ be an excellent generalized Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d$ that is $F$-injective on the punctured spectrum. Let $\frak q$ be a standard parameter ideal of $R$. The aim of the paper is to prove that $$\ell_R({\frak q}^F/{\frak q})\leq \sum\limits_{i=0}^{d}\binom{d}{i}\ell_R(0^F_{H^i_{\frak m}(R)}).$$ Moreover, if $\frak q$ is contained in a large enough power of $\frak m$, we have $${\frak q}^F/{\frak q} \cong \bigoplus_{i=0}^d (0^F_{H^i_{\frak m}(R)})^{\binom{d}{i}}.$$
We use geometric and cohomological methods to show that given a degree bound for membership in ideals of a fixed degree type in the polynomial ring P=k[x_0,..., x_d], one obtains a good generic degree bound for membership in the tight closure of an ideal of that degree type in any standard-graded k-algebra R of dimension d+1. This indicates that the tight closure of an ideal behaves more uniformly than the ideal itself. Moreover, if R is normal, one obtains a generic bound for membership in the Frobenius closure. If d is at most 2, then the bound for ideal membership in P can be computed from …
Let I denote an R_+ -primary homogeneous ideal in a normal standard-graded Cohen-Macaulay domain over a field of positive characteristic p. We give a linear degree bound for the Frobenius powers I^[q] of I, q=p^e, in terms of the minimal slope of the top-dimensional syzygy bundle on the projective variety Proj R. This provides an inclusion bound for tight closure. In the same manner we give a linear bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Frobenius powers I^[q].
Generalized Frobenius powers of an ideal were introduced in work of Hernández, Teixeira, and Witt as characteristic-dependent analogs of test ideals. However, little is known about the Frobenius powers and critical exponents of specific ideals, even in the monomial case. We describe an algorithm to compute the critical exponents of monomial ideals and use this algorithm to prove some results about their Frobenius powers and critical exponents. Rather than using test ideals, our algorithm uses techniques from linear optimization.
In this paper we study the commutativity of the Frobenius functor and the colon operation of two ideals for Noetherian rings of positive characteristic $p$. New characterizations of regular rings and local UFDs are given.
This paper is concerned with tight closure in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$, and is motivated by an argument of K. E. Smith and I. Swanson that shows that, if the sequence of Frobenius powers of a proper ideal $I$ of $R$ has linear growth of primary decompositions, then tight closure (of $I$) commutes with localization at the powers of a single element. It is shown in this paper that, provided $R$ has a weak test element, linear growth of primary decompositions for other sequences of ideals of $R$ that approximate, in a certain sense, the sequence of Frobenius p…
The structure of the defining ideal of the semigroup ring $k[H]$ of a numerical semigroup $H$ over a field $k$ is described, when the pseudo-Frobenius numbers of $H$ are multiples of a fixed integer.
In two recent papers, the author has developed a theory of graded annihilators of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$, and has shown that this theory is relevant to the theory of test elements in tight closure theory. One result of that work was that, if $R$ is local and the $R$-module structure on the injective envelope $E$ of the simple $R$-module can be extended to a structure as a torsion-free left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring, then $R$ is $F$-pure and has a tight closure test element. One…
The Frobenius test exponent $\operatorname{Fte}(R)$ of a local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ of prime characteristic $p > 0$ is the smallest $e_0 \in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ generated by a (full) system of parameters, the Frobenius closure $\mathfrak{q}^F$ has $(\mathfrak{q}^F)^{[p^{e_0}]} = \mathfrak{q}^{[p^{e_0}]}$. We establish a suffcient condition for $\operatorname{Fte}(R)<\infty$ and use it to show that if $R$ is such that the Frobenius closure of the zero submodule in the lower local cohomology modules has finite colength, i.e. $H^j_{\mathfrak{m}}(R) / 0^F_{H^j_{…
This paper proves some special cases in which localization of tight closure holds. In particular it studies the condition LC relating to bounding the Loewy lengths of local cohomology of Frobenius iterates of quotient rings.
Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$, and $t$ an integer such that $H_{\frak m}^j(R)/0^F_{H^j_{\frak m}(R)}$ has finite length for all $j<t$. The aim of this paper is to show that there exists an uniform bound for Frobenius test exponents of ideals generated by filter regular sequences of length at most $t$.
The main aim of this article is to study the relation between $F$-injective singularity and the Frobenius closure of parameter ideals in Noetherian rings of positive characteristic. The paper consists of the following themes, including many other topics. We prove that if every parameter ideal of a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$ is Frobenius closed, then it is $F$-injective. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the injectivity of the Frobenius action on $H^i_{\fm}(R)$ for all $i \le f_{\fm}(R)$, where $f_{\fm}(R)$ is the finiteness dimension of $R$. As applicat…
It was previously known, by work of Smith-Swanson and of Sharp-Nossem, that the linear growth property of primary decompositions of Frobenius powers of ideals in rings of prime characteristic has strong connections to the localization problem in tight closure theory. The localization problem has recently been settled in the negative by Brenner and Monsky, but the linear growth question is still open. We study growth of primary decompositions of Frobenius powers of dimension one homogeneous ideals in graded rings over fields. If the ring is positively graded we prove that the linear growth prop…
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
We survey results produced from the interaction between methods in prime characteristic and combinatorial commutative algebra. We showcase results for edge ideals, toric varieties, Stanley-Reisner rings, and initial ideals that were proven via Frobenius. We also discuss results for monomial ideals obtained using Frobenius-like maps. Finally, we present results for $F$-pure rings that were inspired by work done for Stanley-Reisner rings.
Let $R=\mathbb{K}[X_1, \ldots , X_n ]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. We introduce an endomorphism $\mathcal{F}^{[m]}: R \rightarrow R $ and denote the image of an ideal $I$ of $R$ via this endomorphism as $I^{[m]}$ and call it to be the $m$ \textit{-th square power} of $I$. In this article, we study some homological invariants of $I^{[m]}$ such as regularity, projective dimension, associated primes and depth for some families of ideals e.g. monomial ideals.
We provide suitable conditions under which the asymptotic limit of the Hilbert-Samuel coefficients of the Frobenius powers of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal exists in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ with prime characteristic $p>0.$ This, in turn, gives an expression of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of powers of the ideal. We also prove that for a face ring $R$ of a simplicial complex and an ideal $J$ generated by pure powers of the variables, the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function $\ell(R/(J^{[q]})^k)$ is a polynomial for all $q,k$ and also give an expression of the generalized Hilb…
This paper studies Frobenius powers of parameter ideals in a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$. For a given ideal $\fa$ of $R$, there is a power $Q$ of $p$, depending on $\fa$, such that the $Q$-th Frobenius power of the Frobenius closure of $\fa$ is equal to the $Q$-th Frobenius power of $\fa$. The paper addresses the question as to whether there exists a {\em uniform} $Q_0$ which `works' in this context for all parameter ideals of $R$ simultaneously. In a recent paper, Katzman and Sharp proved that there does exists such a uniform $Q_0$ when $R$ is Cohen--Maca…
We introduce two closure operations on ideals in commutative rings related to the ring operation of root closure. One closure is the result of iterating a root-like operation on ideals infinitely many times, and the other closure arises as a graded component of the root closure of the Rees algebra applied to an ideal. We study the properties of these closures and prove they are distinct operations.
This paper studies the Ratliff-Rush closure of ideals in integral domains. By definition, the Ratliff-Rush closure of an ideal $I$ of a domain $R$ is the ideal given by $\tilde{I}:=\bigcup(I^{n+1}:_{R}I^{n})$ and an ideal $I$ is said to be a Ratliff-Rush ideal if $\tilde{I}=I$. We completely characterize integrally closed domains in which every ideal is a Ratliff-Rush ideal and we give a complete description of the Ratliff-Rush closure of an ideal in a valuation domain.
We construct normal hypersurfaces whose local cohomology modules have infinitely many associated primes. These include unique factorization domains of characteristic zero with rational singularities, as well as F-regular unique factorization domains of positive characteristic. As a consequence, we answer a question on the associated primes of Frobenius powers of ideals, which arose from the localization problem in tight closure theory.
It is an open question whether tight closure commutes with localization in quotients of a polynomial ring in finitely many variables over a field. Katzman showed that tight closure of ideals in these rings commutes with localization at one element if for all ideals I and J in a polynomial ring there is a linear upper bound in q on the degree in the least variable of reduced Groebner bases in reverse lexicographic ordering of the ideals of the form J + I^{[q]}. Katzman conjectured that this property would always be satisfied. In this paper we prove several cases of Katzman's conjecture. We also…
We prove that the initial ideal of the defining ideal of a monomial curve that corresponds to an almost arithmetic sequence of positive integers is Ratliff-Rush closed.
In this paper, we prove a result similar to results of Itoh and Hong-Ulrich, proving that integral closure of an ideal is compatible with specialization by a general element of that ideal for ideals of height at least two in a large class of rings. Moreover, we show integral closure of sufficiently large powers of the ideal is compatible with specialization by a general element of the original ideal. In a polynomial ring over an infinite field, we give a class of squarefree monomial ideals for which the integral closure is compatible with specialization by a general linear form.
In a formally unmixed Noetherian local ring, if the colength and multiplicity of an integrally closed ideal agree, then $R$ is regular. We deduce this using the relationship between multiplicity and various ideal closure operations.
We establish an inequality involving colengths of the tight closure of ideals of systems of parameters in local rings with some mild conditions. As an application, we prove and refine a result by Goto and Nakamura, conjectured by Watanabe and Yoshida, which states that the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of a parameter ideal is greater than or equal to the colength of the tight closure of the ideal.
This article extends the notion of a Frobenius power of an ideal in prime characteristic to allow arbitrary nonnegative real exponents. These generalized Frobenius powers are closely related to test ideals in prime characteristic, and multiplier ideals over fields of characteristic zero. For instance, like these well-known families of ideals, Frobenius powers also give rise to jumping exponents that we call critical Frobenius exponents. In fact, the Frobenius powers of a principal ideal coincides with its test ideals, but appear to be a more refined measure of singularities in general. Herein,…
We characterize the rings in which the equality $(τI:τ)= I^*$ holds for every ideal $I \subset R$. Under certain assumptions, these rings must be either weakly F-regular or one-dimensional.
This paper establishes the fundamental properties of the $s$-closures, a recently introduced family of closure operations on ideals of rings of positive characteristic. The behavior of the $s$-closure of homogeneous ideals in graded rings is studied, and criteria are given for when the $s$-closure of an ideal can be described exactly in terms of its tight closure and rational powers. Sufficient conditions are established for the weak $s$-closure to equal to the $s$-closure. A generalization of the Briancon-Skoda theorem is given which compares any two different $s$-closures applied to powers o…
It is well known that a domain without proper strongly divisorial ideals is completely integrally closed. In this paper we show that a domain without {\em prime} strongly divisorial ideals is not necessarily completely integrally closed, although this property holds under some additional assumptions.
The paper shows that if the set of associated primes of Frobenius powers of ideals or a closely related set of primes is finite then if tight closure does not commute with localisation one can find a counter-example where $R$ is complete local and we are localizing at a prime ideal $P \subset R$ with $\dim (R/P)=1$. If one assumes further that for any local ring $(R,m)$ of prime characteristic $p$ and every finitely generated $R$-module $\bar M$ the set $ \bigcup_e \Ass G^e (\bar M) $ has finitely many maximal elements and, in addition, for every $R$-module $\bar M$ there exists a positive int…
We show that for ideals primary to a maximal ideal in a normal domain of finite type over the complex numbers, its tight closure is contained inside the continuous closure.
This article outgrew from an effort to understand our basic question: Are the annihilators of the non-zero Koszul homology modules $H_i$ of an unmixed ideal $I$ contained in the integral closure $\bar{I}$ of $I$? We also obtain some variations on a result of Burch, which continue the theme of the paper in that they deal with annihilators of homology and integrally closed ideals.
We relate closure operations for ideals and for submodules to non-flat Grothendieck topologies. We show how a Grothendieck topology on an affine scheme induces a closure operation in a natural way, and how to construct for a given closure operation fulfilling certain properties a Grothendieck topology which induces this operation. In this way we relate the radical to the surjective topology and the constructible topology, the integral closure to the submersive topology, to the proper topology and to Voevodsky's h-topology, the Frobenius closure to the Frobenius topology and the plus closure to…
In the ring R=K[X,Y,Z]/(X^3+Y^3+Z^3), where K is a field of prime characteristic p other than 3, determining the tight closure of the ideal (X^2, Y^2, Z^2)R had existed as a classic example of the difficulty involved in tight closure computations. We settle this question, compute the Frobenius closure of this ideal, and generalize these results to the diagonal hypersurfaces K[X_1,...,X_n]/(X_1^n + ... + X_n^n).
Let R be an excellent local ring, m its maximal ideal and I an ideal. Then there exists a positive integer c such that for all integers n, the integral closure of (I + m^n) is contained in m^(n/c) + the integral closure of I. In the proof, a version of the linear Artin approximation theorem is proved.
Among the several types of closures of an ideal $I$ that have been defined and studied in the past decades, the integral closure $\bar{I}$ has a central place being one of the earliest and most relevant. Despite this role, it is often a difficult challenge to describe it concretely once the generators of $I$ are known. Our aim in this note is to show that in a broad class of ideals their radicals play a fundamental role in testing for integral closedness, and in case $I\neq \bar{I}$, $\surd{I}$ is still helpful in finding some fresh new elements in $\bar{I}\setminus I$. Among the classes of id…
Let R be an integral domain and I a nonzero ideal of R. A sub-ideal J of I is a t-reduction of I if (JI^{n})_{t}=(I^{n+1})_{t} for some positive integer n. An element x in R is t-integral over I if there is an equation x^{n} + a_{1}x^{n-1} +...+ a_{n-1}x + a_{n} = 0 with a_{i} in (I^{i})_{t} for I = 1,...,n. The set of all elements that are t-integral over I is called the t-integral closure of I. This paper investigates the t-reductions and t-integral closure of ideals. Our objective is to establish satisfactory t-analogues of well-known results, in the literature, on the integral closure of i…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$. The main purposes of this paper are to show that if the injective envelope $E$ of the simple $R$-module has a structure as a torsion-free left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring over $R$, then $R$ has a tight closure test element (for modules) and is $F$-pure, and to relate the test ideal of $R$ to the smallest '$E$-special' ideal of $R$ of positive height. A byproduct is an analogue of a result of Janet Cowden Vassilev: she showed, in the case where $R$ is an $F$-pure homomorphic image of an $F$-finite reg…
Suppose that R is a two-dimensional normal standard-graded domain over a finite field. We prove that there exists a uniform Frobenius test exponent b for the class of homogeneous ideals in R generated by at most n elements. This means that for every ideal I in this class we have that f^(p^b) belongs to I^([p^b]) if and only if f belongs to the Frobenius closure I^F. This gives in particular a finite test for the Frobenius closure. On the other hand we show that there is no uniform bound for Frobenius test exponent for all homogeneous ideals independent of the number of generators. Under simila…
We prove that the integral closedness of any ideal of height at least two is compatible with specialization by a generic element. This opens the possibility for proofs using induction on the height of an ideal. Also, with additional assumptions, we show that an element is integral over a module if it is integral modulo a generic element of the module. This turns questions about integral closures of modules into problems about integral closures of ideals, by means of a construction known as Bourbaki ideal.
Test ideals are an important concept in tight closure theory and their behavior via flat base change can be very difficult to understand. Our paper presents results regarding this behavior under flat maps with reasonably nice (but far from smooth) fibers. This involves analyzing, in depth, a special type of ideal of test elements, called the CS test ideal. Besides providing new results, the paper also contains extensions of a theorem by G. Lyubeznik and K. E. Smith on the completely stable test ideal and of theorems by F. Enescu and, independently, M. Hashimoto on the behavior of F-rationality…
We prove that in normal rings the tight closure of an ideal can be computed as the sum of the ideal and a piece of the tight closure, called the special tight closure.
Let I\subset K[x,y] be a <x,y>-primary monomial ideal where K is a field. This paper produces an algorithm for computing the Ratliff-Rush closure I for the ideal I=<m_0,...,m_{n}> whenever m_{i} is contained in the integral closure of the ideal <x^{a_{n}},y^{b_0}>. This generalizes of the work of Crispin \cite{Cri}. Also, it provides generalizations and answers for some questions given in \cite{HJLS}, and enables us to construct infinite families of Ratliff-Rush ideals.
We look at how the equivalence of tight closure and plus closure (or Frobenius closure) in the homogeneous m-coprimary case implies the same closure equivalence in the non-homogeneous m-coprimary case in standard graded rings. Although our result does not depend upon dimension, the primary application is based on results known in dimension 2 due to the recent results of H. Brenner. We also show that unlike the Noetherian case, the injective hull of the residue field over $R^+$ or $R^\infty$ contains elements that are not killed by any power of the maximal ideal of R.
