For certain negative rational numbers k0, called singular values, and associated with the symmetric group S_N on N objects, there exist homogeneous polynomials annihilated by each Dunkl operator when the parameter k = k0. It was shown by de Jeu, Opdam and the author (TAMS 346(1994),237-256) that the singular values are exactly the values m/n with 2<=n<=N, m = 1,2... and m/n is not an integer. For each pair (m,n) satisfying these conditions there is a unique irreducible S_N-module of singular polynomials for the singular value -m/n. The existence of these polynomials was established by the author (IMRN 2004,#67,3607-3635). The uniqueness is proven in the present paper. By using Murphy's (J. Alg. 69(1981), 287-297) results on the eigenvalues of the Murphy elements, the problem of existence of singular polynomials is first restricted to the isotype of a partition of N (corresponding to an irreducible representation of S_N) such that (n/gcd(m,n)) divides t+1 for each part t of the partition except the last one. Then by arguments involving nonsymmetric Jack polynomials it is shown that the assumption that the second part of the partition is greater than or equal to n/gcd(m,n) leads to a contradiction. This shows that the singular polynomials are exactly those already determined.
We prove a conjecture for the irreducibility of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. We describe explicitly the irreducible subquotients of certain classes of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules.
Singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules of index 2 are modules whose tableaux bases may have singular pairs but no singular triples of entries on each row. In this paper we construct singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for arbitrary singular character of index 2. Explicit bases of derivative tableaux and the action of the generators of $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ are given for these modules. Our construction leads to new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules and also provides tableaux bases for some simple Verma modules.
We prove a singular version of Beilinson-Bernstein localization for a complex semi-simple Lie algebra following ideas from the positive characteristic case done by \cite{BMR2}. We apply this theory to translation functors, singular blocks in the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand category $\BGGcat$ and Whittaker modules.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for irreducible non-critical Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The uniqueness result leads to a complete classification of the irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with 1-singularity. An explicit construction of such modules was given in \cite{FGR2}. In particular, we show that the modules constructed in \cite{FGR2} exhaust all irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with 1-singularity. To prove the result we introduce a new category of modules (called Drinfeld category) related to the Drinfeld generators of the Yangian Y(gl_n) and define a functor from the category of non-crit…
For a simple Lie superalgebra of type BDFG, we give explicit formulas for singular vectors in a Verma module of highest weight $λ- ρ$, which have weight $s_γλ- ρ$ for certain positive non-isotropic roots $γ.$ This implies the existence of a nonzero homomorphism between the corresponding Verma modules.
We present a simplified way to construct the Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}(n,\mathbb C)$ related to a $1$-singular GT-tableau defined by Futorny, Grantcharov and Ramirez. We begin by reframing the classical construction of generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules found by Drozd, Futorny and Ovsienki, showing that they form a flat family over generic points of $\mathbb C^{\binom{n}{2}}$. We then show that this family can be extended to a flat family over a variety including generic points and $1$-singular points for a fixed singular pair of entries. The $1$-singular modules are precisely t…
The classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas provide a basis in terms of tableaux and an explicit action of the generators of $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$ for every irreducible finite-dimensional $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$-module. These formulas can be used to define a $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$-module structure on some infinite-dimensional modules - the so-called generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules are convenient to work with since for every generic tableau there exists a unique irreducible generic Gelfand-Tsetlin module containing this tableau as a basis element. In this paper we initiat…
In this article we study the vertices of simple modules for the symmetric groups in prime characteristic $p$. In particular, we complete the classification of the vertices of simple $S_n$-modules labelled by hook partitions.
Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we compute complexities of some simple modules of symmetric groups labelled by two-part partitions. Most of the simple modules considered here are contained in the $p$-blocks with non-abelian defect groups.
We provide an upper bound for the dimension of the maximal projective submodule of the Lie module of the symmetric group of $n$ letters in prime characteristic $p$, where $n = pk$ with $p \nmid k$.
In this paper we study the vertices of indecomposable Specht modules for symmetric groups. For any given indecomposable non-projective Specht module, the main theorem of the article describes a family of p-subgroups contained in its vertex. The theorem generalizes and improves an earlier result due to Wildon in "Vertices of Specht modules and blocks of the symmetric group", J. Alg 323 (2010) 2243--2256.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
The author and Nakano recently proved that multiplicities in a Specht filtration of a symmetric group module are well-defined precisely when the characteristic is at least five. This result suggested the possibility of a symmetric group theory analogous to that of good filtrations and tilting modules for $GL_n(k)$. This paper is an initial attempt at such a theory. We obtain two sufficient conditions that ensure a module has a Specht filtration, and a formula for the filtration multiplicities. We then study the categories of modules that satisfy the conditions, in the process obtaining a new r…
A conjecture going back to the eighties claims that there are no non-trivial self-extensions of irreducible modules over symmetric groups if the characteristic of the ground field is not equal to $2$. We obtain some partial positive results on this conjecture.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, $G_1$ the Frobenius kernel of $G$, and $T$ a maximal torus of $G$. We show that the $G_1T$-Verma modules of singular highest weights are all rigid, determine their Loewy length, and describe their Loewy structure using the periodic Kazhdan-Lusztig $Q$-polynomials. We assume that the characteristic of the field is large enough that, in particular, Lusztig's conjecture for the irreducible $G_1T$-characters hold.
We enumerate over even characteristic the components of the permutation module of the symmetric group of even degree acting on the set of its fixed point free involutions. We find the vertex and Brauer quotient for each component, and the ordinary character associated with each component.
We show that the simple modules of the Rouquier blocks of symmetric groups, in characteristic $p$ and having $p$-weight $w$ with $w < p$, have a common complexity $w$, and that when $p$ is odd, $D^{(p+1,1^{p-1})}$ has complexity 1, while the other simple modules labelled by a partition having $p$-weight 2 have complexity 2.
This paper studies the vertices, in the sense defined by J. A. Green, of Specht modules for symmetric groups. The main theorem gives, for each indecomposable non-projective Specht module, a large subgroup contained in one of its vertices. A corollary of this theorem is a new way to determine the defect groups of symmetric groups. We also use it to find the Green correspondents of a particular family of simple Specht modules; as a corollary, we get a new proof of the Brauer correspondence for blocks of the symmetric group. The proof of the main theorem uses the Brauer homomorphism on modules, a…
For any good tilting module $T$ over a ring $A$, there exists an $n$-symmetric subcategory $\mathscr{E}$ of a module category such that the derived category of the endomorphism ring of $T$ is a recollement of the derived categories of $\mathscr{E}$ and $A$ in the sense of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne. Thus the kernel of the total left-derived tensor functor induced by the tilting module is triangle equivalent to the derived category of $\mathscr{E}$.
Xu introduced a system of partial differential equations to investigate singular vectors in the Verma modules of highest weight $λ$ over $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$. He proved that the solution space of this system in the space of truncated power series is spanned by $\{σ(1)\ |\ σ\in S_n\}$. We present an explicit formula of the solution $s_α(1)$ for every positive root $α$ and showed directly that $s_α(1)$ is a polynomial if and only if $\langleλ+ρ,α\rangle$ is a nonnegative integer. From this, we can recover a formula of singular vectors given by Malikov et al.
Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We show that $\Hom_{FΣ_n}(S^λ, S^μ)$ can have arbitrarily large dimension as $n$ and $p$ grow, where $S^λ$ and $S^μ$ are Specht modules for the symmetric group $Σ_n$. Similar results hold for the Weyl modules of the general linear group. Every previously computed example has been at most one-dimensional, with the exception of Specht modules over a field of characteristic two. The proof uses the work of Chuang and Tan, providing detailed information about the radical series of Weyl modules in Rouquier blocks.
We study the indecomposable summands of the permutation module obtained by inducing the trivial $\mathbb{F}(S_a\wr S_n)$-module to the full symmetric group $S_{an}$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd prime characteristic $p$ such that $a<p\leq n$. In particular we characterize the vertices of such indecomposable summands. As a corollary we will disprove a modular version of Foulkes' Conjecture. In the second part of the article we will use this information to give a new description of some columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in terms of the ordinary character of the Foulke…
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $λ$ be a partition of $n$. Let $M^λ$ be the Young permutation module labelled by $λ$. In this paper, we study symmetric and exterior powers of $M^λ$ in positive characteristic case. We determine the symmetric and exterior powers of $M^λ$ that are projective. All the indecomposable exterior powers of $M^λ$ are also classified. We then prove some results for indecomposable direct summands that have the largest complexity in direct sum decompositions of some symmetric and exterior powers of $M^λ$. We end by parameterizing all the Scott modules that are isomorphic…
Motivated by the relation between Schur algebra and the group algebra of a symmetric group, along with other similar examples in algebraic Lie theory, Min Fang and Steffen Koenig addressed some behaviour of the endomorphism algebra of a generator over a symmetric algebra, which they called gendo-symmetric algebra. Continuing this line of works, we classify in this article the representation-finite gendo-symmetric algebras that have at most one isomorphism class of indecomposable non-injective projective module. We also determine their almost ν-stable derived equivalence classes in the sense of…
Let $G= SL_{n+1}$ be defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 2$. For each $n \geq 1$ there exists a singular block in the category of $G_1$-modules which contains precisely $n+1$ irreducible modules. We are interested in the lift of this block to the category of $G_1T$-modules. Imposing only mild assumptions on $p$, we will perform a number of calculations in this setting, including a complete determination of the Loewy series for the baby Verma modules and all possible extensions between the irreducible modules. In the case where $p$ is extremely large, we will also …
We describe Serre functors for (generalisations of) the category O associated with a semi-simple complex Lie algebra. In our approach, projective-injective modules play an important role. They control the Serre functor in the case of a quasi-hereditary algebra having a double centraliser property with respect to a symmetric algebra. As an application of the double centraliser property and our description of Serre functors, we prove three conjectures of Khovanov about the projective-injective modules in the parabolic category O for sl_n.
We show that the Jantzen filtration of a Verma module (possibly singular) coincides with its radical filtration. It implies that the Jantzen Conjecture on Verma modules holds for all infinitesimal characters, while the regular case was settled by Beilinson and Bernstein by geometric methods and reproved by Williamson by an algebraic approach. The coincidence between Jantzen filtration and radical filtration is also generalized to the case of parabolic Verma modules by Shan's results.
We give an elementary construction of a $p\geq 1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb C)$-module in terms of local distributions. This is a generalization of the universal $1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb C)$-module obtained in [FGR1]. We expect that the family of new Gelfand-Tsetlin modules that we obtained will lead to a classification of all irreducible $p>1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. So far such a classification is known only for singularity $n=1$.
Let $(G,G^Γ)$ be a Klein four symmetric pair. The author wants to classify all the Klein four symmetric pairs $(G,G^Γ)$ such that there exists at least one nontrivial unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-module $π_K$ that is discretely decomposable as a $(\mathfrak{g}^Γ,K^Γ)$-module. In this article, three assumptions will be made. Firstly, $G$ is an exceptional Lie group of Hermitian type, i.e., $G=\mathrm{E}_{6(-14)}$ or $\mathrm{E}_{7(-25)}$. Secondly, $G^Γ$ is noncompact. Thirdly, there exists an element $σ\inΓ$ corresponding to a symmetric pair of anti-holomorphic type such that $π_K$ i…
We give a complete classification of reductive symmetric pairs (g, h) with the following property: there exists at least one infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-module X that is discretely decomposable as an (h,H \cap K)-module. We investigate further if such X can be taken to be a minimal representation, a Zuckerman derived functor module A_q(λ), or some other unitarizable (g,K)-module. The tensor product $π_1 \otimes π_2$ of two infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-modules arises as a very special case of our setting. In this case, we prove that $π_1 \otimes π_2$ is discretely decomposa…
We show that for any singular dominant integral weight $λ$ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the endomorphism algebra $B$ of any projective-injective module of the parabolic BGG category $\mathcal{O}_λ^{\mathfrak{p}}$ is a symmetric algebra (as conjectured by Khovanov) extending the results of Mazorchuk and Stroppel for the regular dominant integral weight. Moreover, the endomorphism algebra $B$ is equipped with a homogeneous (non-degenerate) symmetrizing form. In the appendix, there is a short proof due to K. Coulembier and V. Mazorchuk showing that the endomorphism algebra …
We call an irreducible character $p$-singular if $p$ divides its degree. We prove a number of equivalent conditions for a character of the symmetric group $S_n$ to be $p$-singular, involving a certain family of conjugacy classes. This answers in part a question by Navarro.
We determine the graded composition multiplicity in the symmetric algebra S(V) of the natural GL_n(q)-module V, or equivalently in the coinvariant algebra of V, for a large class of irreducible modules around the Steinberg module. This was built on a computation, via connections to algebraic groups, of the Steinberg module multiplicity in a tensor product of S(V) with other tensor spaces of fundamental weight modules.
We investigate the endotrivial modules for the Schur covers of the symmetric and alternating groups and determine the structure of their group of endotrivial modules in all characteristics. We provide a full description of this group by generators and relations in all cases.
We prove a recursive formula for the exterior and symmetric powers of modules for a cyclic 2-group. This makes computation straightforward. Previously, a complete description was only known for cyclic groups of prime order.
The symmetric coinvariant algebra $C[x_1, dots, x_n]_{S_n}$ is the quotient algebra of the polynomial ring by the ideal generated by symmetric polynomials vanishing at the origin. It is known that the algebra is isomorphic to the regular representation of $S_n$. Replacing $C[x]$ with $A = C[x,y]/(xy)$, we introduce another symmetric coinvariant algebra $A^{otimes n}_{S_n}$ and determine its $S_n$-module structure. As an application, we determine the $sl_{r+1}$-module structure of the local Weyl module at a double point for $sl_{r+1} otimes A$.
A new homological symmetry condition is exhibited that extends and unifies several recently defined and widely used concepts. Applications include general constructions of tilting modules and derived equivalences, and characterisations of Gorenstein properties of endomorphism rings.
We introduce a general version of singular compactness theorem which makes it possible to show that being a $Σ$-cotorsion module is a property of the complete theory of the module. As an application of the powerful tools developed along the way, we give a new description of Gorenstein flat modules which implies that, regardless of the ring, the class of all Gorenstein flat modules forms the left-hand class of a perfect cotorsion pair. We also prove the dual result for Gorenstein injective modules.
This paper is devoted to an elementary new construction of $1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules using complex geometry. We introduce a universal ring $\mathcal D_o$ together with the vector space $\mathcal S=\mathcal S(\mathcal D_o)$ with basis $\mathcal B_o = \mathcal B(\mathcal D_o)$ formed from some local distributions such that $\mathcal S$ is a natural $\mathcal D_o$-module. For any homomorphism of rings $\mathcal U(\mathfrak{h}) \to \mathcal D_o$, where $\mathfrak{h}$ is a Lie algebra, it follows that $\mathcal S$ is also an $\mathfrak{h}$-module. We observe that the homomorphism of ring…
For any prime p, we construct, and simultaneously count, all of the complex Specht modules in a given p-block of the symmetric group which remain irreducible when reduced modulo p. We call the Specht modules with this property p-irreducible modules. Recently Fayers has proven a conjecture of James and Mathas that provides a characterization of the partitions that correspond to the p-irreducible modules. In this paper we present a method for decomposing the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible modules, and we use this decomposition to construct and count all of the partitions corresponding…
In this paper, we study basic properties of global $\jmath$-crystal bases for integrable modules over a quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebra $\mathbf{U}^{\jmath}$ associated to the Satake diagram of type AIII with even white nodes and no black nodes. Also, we obtain an intrinsic characterization of the $\jmath$-crystal bases, whose original definition is artificial.
The restriction of a (dual) Specht module to a smaller symmetric group has a filtration by (dual) Specht modules of this smaller group. In the cellular structure of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the cell modules are exactly the (dual) Specht modules. The partition algebra is a cellular algebra containing the group algebra of the symmetric group. In this article, we study the structure of the restriction of a cell module to the group algebra of a symmetric group (with smaller index) and find conditions for the restriction to possess a (dual) Specht filtration.
Given a weight of $sl(n,\mbb{C})$, we derive a system of variable-coefficient second-order linear partial differential equations that determines the singular vectors in the corresponding Verma module, and a differential-operator representation of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the related space of truncated power series. We prove that the solution space of the system of partial differential equations is exactly spanned by $\{\sgm(1)\mid \sgm\in S_n\}$. Moreover, the singular vectors of $sl(n,\mbb{C})$ in the Verma module are given by those $\sgm(1)$ that are polynomials. The well-known results o…
Cohomology of Specht modules for the symmetric group can be equated in low degrees with corresponding cohomology for the Borel subgroup B of the general linear group GL_d(k), but this has never been exploited to prove new symmetric group results. Using work of Doty on the submodule structure of symmetric powers of the natural GL_d(k) module together with work of Andersen on cohomology for B and its Frobenius kernels, we prove new results about H^i(Σ_d, S^λ). We recover work of James in the case i=0. Then we prove two stability theorems, one of which is a "generic cohomology" result for Specht …
In this paper, we show that every regular singular $\mathscr{D}$-module in $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose singular locus is a normal crossing is isomorphic to a quiver $\mathscr{D}$-module - a $\mathscr{D}$-module whose definition is based on certain representations of the hypercube quiver. To be more precise we give an equivalence of the respective categories. Our definition of quiver $\mathscr{D}$-modules is based on the one of Khoroshkin and Varchenko. To prove the equivalence, we use an equivalence by Galligo, Granger and Maisonobe for regular singular $\mathscr{D}$-modules whose singular locus is a…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for that the support $τ$-tilting poset of a finite dimensional algebra is isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order. Moreover we show that there are infinitely many finite dimensional algebras whose support $τ$-tilting posets are isomorphic to the poset of symmetric group with weak order.
We classify and explicitly describe homomorphisms of Verma modules for conformal Galilei algebras $\mathfrak{cga}_\ell(d,{\mathbb C})$ with $d=1$ for any integer value $\ell \in \mathbb{N}$. The homomorphisms are uniquely determined by singular vectors as solutions of certain differential operators of flag type, and identified with specific polynomials arising as coefficients in the expansion of a parametric family of symmetric polynomials into power sum symmetric polynomials.
We give branching formulas from $so(7,\mathbb{C})$ to $\mathfrak{g}_2$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $\mathfrak{g}_2$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $so(7,\mathbb{C})$, and branching formulas from $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}_2$ respectively, under some assumptions on the parameters of generalized Verma modules.
We introduce a suitable adapted ordering for the twisted N=2 superconformal algebra (i.e. with mixed boundary conditions for the fermionic fields). We show that the ordering kernels for complete Verma modules have two elements and the ordering kernels for G-closed Verma modules just one. Therefore, spaces of singular vectors may be two-dimensional for complete Verma modules whilst for G-closed Verma modules they can only be one-dimensional. We give all singular vectors for the levels 1/2, 1, and 3/2 for both complete Verma modules and G-closed Verma modules. We also give explicit examples of d…
