We determine all positive harmonic functions for a large class of "semi-isotropic" random walks on the lamplighter group, i.e., the wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group. This is possible via the geometric realization of a Cayley graph of that group as the Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,q). More generally, DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$, and our result applies to all DL-graphs. This is based on a careful study of the minimal harmonic functions for semi-isotropic walks on trees.
Let T be the homogeneous tree with degree and G a finitely generated group whose Cayley graph is T. The associated lamplighter group is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order r with G. For a large class of random walks on this group, we prove almost sure convergence to a natural geometric boundary. If the probability law governing the random walk has finite first moment, then the probability space formed by this geometric boundary together with the limit distribution of the random walk is proved to be maximal, that is, the Poisson boundary. We also prove that the Dirichlet problem at …
We determine the precise asymptotic behaviour (in space) of the Green kernel of simple random walk with drift on the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The latter is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$. When $q=r$, it is the Cayley graph of the wreath product (lamplighter group) ${\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ with respect to a natural set of generators. We describe the full Martin compactification of these random walks on $DL$-graphs and, in particular, lamplighter groups. This completes and provides a better approach to prev…
We consider on-diagonal heat kernel estimates and the laws of the iterated logarithms for a switch-walk-switch random walk on a lamplighter graph under the condition that the random walk on the underlying graph enjoys sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates.
The lamplighter group over $\mathbb Z$ is the wreath product $\mathbb Z_q \wr \mathbb Z$. With respect to a natural generating set, its Cayley graph is the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,q)$. We study harmonic functions for the "simple" Laplacian on this graph, and more generally, for a class of random walks on $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The DL-graphs are horocyclic products of two trees, and we give a full description of all positive harmonic functions in terms of the boundaries of these two trees. In particular, we determine the minimal Martin boundary, that is, the set of minimal positive ha…
We prove a Law of Iterated Logarithm for random walks on a family of diagonal products constructed by Brieussel and Zheng (2021). This provides a wide variety of new examples of Law of Iterated Logarithm behaviours for random walks on groups. In particular, it follows that for any $\frac{1}{2}\leq β\leq 1$ there is a group $G$ and random walk $W_n$ on $G$ with $\mathbb{E}|W_n|\simeq n^β$ such that $$0<\limsup \frac{|W_n|}{n^β(\log\log n)^{1-β}}<\infty$$ and $$0<\liminf \frac{|W_n|(\log\log n)^{1-β}}{n^β}<\infty.$$
The main goal of this paper is to determine the Poisson boundary of lamplighter random walks over a general class of discrete groups $Γ$ endowed with a rich boundary. The starting point is the Strip Criterion of identification of the Poisson boundary for random walks on discrete groups due to Kaimanovich. A geometrical method for constructing the strip as a subset of the lamplighter group starting with a smaller strip in the base group $Γ$ is developed. Then, this method is applied to several classes of base groups $Γ$: groups with infinitely many ends, hyperbolic groups in the sense of Gromov…
Suppose we are given an infinite, finitely generated group $G$ and a transient random walk on the wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/ 2\mathbb{Z})\wr G$, such that its projection on $G$ is transient and has finite first moment. This random walk can be interpreted as a lamplighter random walk on $G$. Our aim is to show that the random walk on the wreath product escapes to infinity with respect to a suitable (pseudo-)metric faster than its projection onto $G$. We also address the case where the pseudo-metric is the length of a shortest ``travelling salesman tour''. In this context, and excluding some d…
We introduce the discrete affine group of a regular tree as a finitely generated subgroup of the affine group. We describe the Poisson boundary of random walks on it as a space of configurations. We compute isoperimetric profile and Hilbert compression exponent of the group. We also discuss metric relationship with some lamplighter groups and lamplighter graphs.
We show that the Plancherel measure of the lamplighter random walk on a graph coincides with the expected spectral measure of the absorbing random walk on the Bernoulli percolation clusters. In the subcritical regime the spectrum is pure point and we construct a complete orthonormal basis of finitely supported eigenfunctions.
Recently, several papers have been devoted to the analysis of lamplighter random walks, in particular when the underlying graph is the infinite path $\mathbb{Z}$. In the present paper, we develop a spectral analysis for lamplighter random walks on finite graphs. In the general case, we use the $C_2$-symmetry to reduce the spectral computations to a series of eigenvalue problems on the underlying graph. In the case the graph has a transitive isometry group $G$, we also describe the spectral analysis in terms of the representation theory of the wreath product $C_2\wr G$. We apply our theory to t…
Given a finite graph G, a vertex of the lamplighter graph consists of a zero-one labeling of the vertices of G, and a marked vertex of G. For transitive graphs G, we show that, up to constants, the relaxation time for simple random walk in corresponding lamplighter graph is the maximal hitting time for simple random walk in G, while the mixing time in total variation on the lamplighter graph is the expected cover time on G. The mixing time in the uniform metric on the lamplighter graph admits a sharp threshold, and equals |G| multiplied by the relaxation time on G, up to a factor of log |G|. F…
The main purpose of this thesis is to study the interplay between geometric properties of infinite graphs and analytic and probabilistic objects such as transition operators, harmonic functions and random walks on these graphs. For a transient random walk, there are several problems one is interested in: for instance to study its convergence, to describe the bounded harmonic functions for the random walk, to describe its Poisson boundary, or to study the parameter of exponential decay of the transition probabilities of the random walk. In the first part of the thesis we deal with similar probl…
We answer positively a question of Kaimanovich and Vershik from 1979, showing that the final configuration of lamps for simple random walk on the lamplighter group over ${\Bbb Z}^d$ ($d \ge 3$) is the Poisson boundary. For $d \ge 5$, this had been shown earlier by Erschler (2011). We extend this to walks of more general types on more general groups.
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group and $X$ its Cayley graph with respect to a finite, symmetric generating set $S$. Furthermore, let $H$ be a finite group and $H \wr G$ the lamplighter group (wreath product) over $G$ with group of "lamps" $H$. We show that the spectral measure (Plancherel measure) of any symmetric "switch--walk--switch" random walk on $H \wr G$ coincides with the expected spectral measure (integrated density of states) of the random walk with absorbing boundary on the cluster of the group identity for Bernoulli site percolation on $X$ with parameter $p = 1/|H|$. The return …
We show that the total-variation mixing time of the lamplighter random walk on fractal graphs exhibit sharp cutoff when the underlying graph is transient (namely of spectral dimension greater than two). In contrast, we show that such cutoff can not occur for strongly recurrent underlying graphs (i.e. of spectral dimension less than two).
We show that the measure on markings of $\mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, with elements of ${0,1}$ given by i.i.d. fair coin flips on the range $\mathcal {R}$ of a random walk $X$ run until time $T$ and 0 otherwise becomes indistinguishable from the uniform measure on such markings at the threshold $T=1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that the total variation mixing time of the random walk on the lamplighter graph $\mathbf {Z}_2\wr \mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, has a cutoff with threshold $1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. We give a general criteri…
We settle an open problem, raised by Y. Peres and D. Revelle, concerning the $L^2$ mixing time of the random walk on the lamplighter graph. We also provide general bounds relating the entropy decay of a Markov chain to the separation distance of the chain, and show that the lamplighter graphs once again provide examples of tightness of our results.
Suppose we are given a homogeneous tree $\mathcal{T}_q$ of degree $q\geq 3$, where at each vertex sits a lamp, which can be switched on or off. This structure can be described by the wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/2)\wr Γ$, where $Γ=\ast_{i=1}^q \mathbb{Z}/2$ is the free product group of $q$ factors $\mathbb{Z}/2$. We consider a transient random walk on a Cayley graph of $(\mathbb{Z}/2)\wr Γ$, for which we want to compute lower and upper bounds for the rate of escape, that is, the speed at which the random walk flees to infinity.
Suppose that $\CG$ is a finite, connected graph and $X$ is a lazy random walk on $\CG$. The lamplighter chain $X^\diamond$ associated with $X$ is the random walk on the wreath product $\CG^\diamond = \Z_2 \wr \CG$, the graph whose vertices consist of pairs $(f,x)$ where $f$ is a labeling of the vertices of $\CG$ by elements of $\Z_2$ and $x$ is a vertex in $\CG$. There is an edge between $(f,x)$ and $(g,y)$ in $\CG^\diamond$ if and only if $x$ is adjacent to $y$ in $\CG$ and $f(z) = g(z)$ for all $z \neq x,y$. In each step, $X^\diamond$ moves from a configuration $(f,x)$ by updating $x$ to $y$…
The Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of the homogeneous trees with respective degrees q+1 and r+1. When q=r, it is the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group (wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group) with respect to a natural generating set. For the "Simple random walk" (SRW) operator on the latter group, Grigorchuk & Zuk and Dicks & Schick have determined the spectrum and the (on-diagonal) spectral measure (Plancherel measure). Here, we show that thanks to the geometric realization, these results can be obtained for all DL-graphs by di…
We derive Donsker-Vardhan type results for functionals of the occupation times when the underlying random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ is in the domain of attraction of an operator-stable law on $\mathbb R^d$. Applications to random walks on wreath products (also known as lamplighter groups) are given.
Given a finite, connected graph $G$, the lamplighter chain on $G$ is the lazy random walk $X^\diamond$ on the associated lamplighter graph $G^\diamond={\mathbf Z}_2 \wr G$. The mixing time of the lamplighter chain on the torus ${\mathbf Z}_n^d$ is known to have a cutoff at a time asymptotic to the cover time of ${\mathbf Z}_n^d$ if $d=2$, and to half the cover time if $d \ge 3$. We show that the mixing time of the lamplighter chain on $G_n(a)={\mathbf Z}_n^2 \times {\mathbf Z}_{a \log n}$ has a cutoff at $ψ(a)$ times the cover time of $G_n(a)$ as $n \to \infty$, where $ψ$ is an explicit weakly…
We prove the law of large numbers for the drift of random walks on the two-dimensional lamplighter group, under the assumption that the random walk has finite $(2+ε)$-moment. This result is in contrast with classical examples of abelian groups, where the displacement after $n$ steps, normalised by its mean, does not concentrate, and the limiting distribution of the normalised $n$-step displacement admits a density whose support is $[0,\infty)$. We study further examples of groups, some with random walks satisfying LLN for drift and other examples where such concentration phenomenon does not ho…
Benjamini, Lyons and Schramm [Random Walks and Discrete Potential Theory (1999) 56-84] considered properties of an infinite graph G, and the simple random walk on it, that are preserved by random perturbations. In this paper we solve several problems raised by those authors. The anchored expansion constant is a variant of the Cheeger constant; its positivity implies positive lower speed for the simple random walk, as shown by Virag [Geom. Funct. Anal. 10 (2000) 1588-1605]. We prove that if G has a positive anchored expansion constant, then so does every infinite cluster of independent percolat…
Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, $H$ a lcsc totally disconnected group and $ρ: Γ\rightarrow H$ a homomorphism with dense image. We develop a general and explicit technique which provides, for every compact open subgroup $L < H$ and bi-$L$-invariant probability measure $θ$ on $H$, a Furstenberg discretization $τ$ of $θ$ such that the Poisson boundary of $(H,θ)$ is a $τ$-boundary. Among other things, this technique allows us to construct examples of finitely supported random walks on certain lamplighter groups and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, whose Poisson boundaries are prime, but no…
In this paper we apply techniques of spherical harmonic analysis to prove a local limit theorem, a rate of escape theorem, and a central limit theorem for isotropic random walks on arbitrary thick regular affine buildings of irreducible type.
We provide explicit formulas for asymptotic densities of $d$-dimensional isotropic Lévy walks, when $d>1$. The densities of multidimensional undershooting and overshooting Lévy walks are presented as well. Interestingly, when the number of dimensions is odd the densities of all these Lévy walks are given by elementary functions. When $d$ is even, we can express the densities as fractional derivatives of hypergeometric functions, which makes an efficient numerical evaluation possible.
We prove that random walks on Thompson's group $F$ driven by strictly non-degenerate finitely supported probability measures $μ$ have a non-trivial Poisson boundary. The proof consists in an explicit construction of two different non-trivial $μ$-boundaries. Both of them are defined in terms of the Schreier graph $Γ$ on the dyadic-rational orbit of the canonical action of $F$ on the unit interval (actually, we consider a natural embedding of $F$ into the group $PLF({\mathbb R})$ of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the real line, and realize $Γ$ on the dyadic-rational orbit in ${\mathbb R}$). …
Suppose that G and H are finite, connected graphs, G regular, X is a lazy random walk on G and Z is a reversible ergodic Markov chain on H. The generalized lamplighter chain X* associated with X and Z is the random walk on the wreath product H\wr G, the graph whose vertices consist of pairs (f,x) where f=(f_v)_{v\in V(G)} is a labeling of the vertices of G by elements of H and x is a vertex in G. In each step, X* moves from a configuration (f,x) by updating x to y using the transition rule of X and then independently updating both f_x and f_y according to the transition probabilities on H; f_z…
We study exit laws from large balls in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq3$, of random walks in an i.i.d. random environment that is a small perturbation of the environment corresponding to simple random walk. Under a centering condition on the measure governing the environment, we prove that the exit laws are close to those of a symmetric random walk, which we identify as a perturbed simple random walk. We obtain bounds on total variation distances as well as local results comparing exit probabilities on boundary segments. As an application, we prove transience of the random walks in random environment. …
A random flight on a plane with non-isotropic displacements at the moments of direction changes is considered. In the case of exponentially distributed flight lengths a Gaussian limit theorem is proved for the position of a particle in the scheme of series when jump lengths and non-isotropic displacements tend to zero. If the flight lengths have a folded Cauchy distribution the limiting distribution of the particle position is a convolution of the circular bivariate Cauchy distribution with a Gaussian law.
We study the mean and variance of the number of self-intersections of the equilateral isotropic random walk in the plane, as well as the corresponding quantities for isotropic equilateral random polygons (random walks conditioned to return to their starting point after a given number of steps). The expected number of self-intersections is $(2/π^2)n\log n + O(n)$ for both walks and polygons with $n$ steps. The variance is $O(n^2 \log n)$ for both walks and polygons, which shows that the number of self-intersections exhibits concentration around the mean.
In this paper we prove a rate of escape theorem and a central limit theorem for isotropic random walks on Fuchsian buildings, giving formulae for the speed and asymptotic variance. In particular, these results apply to random walks induced by bi-invariant measures on Fuchsian Kac-Moody groups, however they also apply to the case where the building is not associated to any reasonable group structure. Our primary strategy is to construct a renewal structure of the random walk. For this purpose we define cones and cone types for buildings and prove that the corresponding automata in the building …
Let T_1,..., T_d be homogeneous trees with degrees q_1+1,..., q_d+1>=3, respectively. For each tree, let h:T_j->Z be the Busemann function with respect to a fixed boundary point (end). Its level sets are the horocycles. The horocyclic product of T_1,...,T_d is the graph DL(q_1,...,q_d) consisting of all d-tuples x_1...x_d in T_1x...xT_d with h(x_1)+...+h(x_d)=0, equipped with a natural neighbourhood relation. In the present paper, we explore the geometric, algebraic, analytic and probabilistic properties of these graphs and their isometry groups. If d=2 and q_1=q_2=q then we obtain a Cayley gr…
In this article we prove existence of the asymptotic entropy for isotropic random walks on regular Fuchsian buildings. Moreover, we give formulae for the asymptotic entropy, and prove that it is equal to the rate of escape of the random walk with respect to the Green distance. When the building arises from a Fuchsian Kac-Moody group our results imply results for random walks induced by bi-invariant measures on these groups, however our results are proven in the general setting without the assumption of any group acting on the building. The main idea is to consider the retraction of the isotrop…
We study the Furstenberg-entropy realization problem for stationary actions. It is shown that for finitely supported probability measures on free groups, any a-priori possible entropy value can be realized as the entropy of an ergodic stationary action. This generalizes results of Bowen. The stationary actions we construct arise via invariant random subgroups (IRSs), based on ideas of Bowen and Kaimanovich. We provide a general framework for constructing a continuum of ergodic IRSs for a discrete group under some algebraic conditions, which gives a continuum of entropy values. Our tools apply …
We study behavior in space and time of random walks in an i.i.d. random environment on Z^d, d>=3. It is assumed that the measure governing the environment is isotropic and concentrated on environments that are small perturbations of the fixed environment corresponding to simple random walk. We develop a revised and extended version of the paper of Bolthausen and Zeitouni (2007) on exit laws from large balls, which, as we hope, is easier to follow. Further, we study mean sojourn times in balls. This work is part of the author's PhD thesis under the supervision of Erwin Bolthausen. A generalizat…
This paper is concerned with the continuous-time quantum walk on Z, Z^d, and infinite homogeneous trees. By using the generating function method, we compute the limit of the average probability distribution for the general isotropic walk on Z, and for nearest-neighbor walks on Z^d and infinite homogeneous trees. In addition, we compute the asymptotic approximation for the probability of the return to zero at time t in all these cases.
We consider the simple random walk on the (unique) infinite cluster of super-critical bond percolation in $\Z^d$ with $d\ge2$. We prove that, for almost every percolation configuration, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of non-degenerate, isotropic Brownian motion. Our analysis is based on the consideration of a harmonic deformation of the infinite cluster on which the random walk becomes a square-integrable martingale. The size of the deformation, expressed by the so called corrector, is estimated by means of ergodicity arguments.
We consider the nearest-neighbor simple random walk on $\Z^d$, $d\ge2$, driven by a field of i.i.d. random nearest-neighbor conductances $ω_{xy}\in[0,1]$. Apart from the requirement that the bonds with positive conductances percolate, we pose no restriction on the law of the $ω$'s. We prove that, for a.e. realization of the environment, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of non-degenerate, isotropic Brownian motion. The quenched functional CLT holds despite the fact that the local CLT may fail in $d\ge5$ due to anomalously slow decay of the probability that the walk ret…
We investigate the statistics of three kinds of records associated with planar random walks, namely diagonal, simultaneous and radial records. The mean numbers of these records grow as universal power laws of time, with respective exponents 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2. The study of diagonal and simultaneous records relies on the underlying renewal structure of the successive hitting times and locations of translated copies of a fixed target. In this sense, this work represents a two-dimensional extension of the analysis made by Feller of ladder points, i.e., records for one-dimensional random walks. This…
We study the minimizers of the sum of the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of the negative Laplacian and the perimeter with respect to a general norm in the class of Jordan domains in the plane. This is equivalent (modulo scaling) to minimizing the said eigenvalue (or the base frequency of a drum of this shape) subject to a hard constraint on the perimeter. We show that, for all norms, a minimizer exists, is unique up to spatial translations and is convex but not necessarily smooth. We give conditions on the norm that characterize the appearance of facets and corners. We also demonstrate that ne…
