Let T be the homogeneous tree with degree and G a finitely generated group whose Cayley graph is T. The associated lamplighter group is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order r with G. For a large class of random walks on this group, we prove almost sure convergence to a natural geometric boundary. If the probability law governing the random walk has finite first moment, then the probability space formed by this geometric boundary together with the limit distribution of the random walk is proved to be maximal, that is, the Poisson boundary. We also prove that the Dirichlet problem at infinity is solvable for continuous functions on the active part of the boundary, if the lamplighter "operates at bounded range".
We determine the precise asymptotic behaviour (in space) of the Green kernel of simple random walk with drift on the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The latter is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$. When $q=r$, it is the Cayley graph of the wreath product (lamplighter group) ${\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ with respect to a natural set of generators. We describe the full Martin compactification of these random walks on $DL$-graphs and, in particular, lamplighter groups. This completes and provides a better approach to prev…
We determine all positive harmonic functions for a large class of "semi-isotropic" random walks on the lamplighter group, i.e., the wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group. This is possible via the geometric realization of a Cayley graph of that group as the Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,q). More generally, DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$, and our result applies to all DL-graphs. This is based on a careful study of the minimal harmonic functions for semi-isotropic walks on trees.
We consider on-diagonal heat kernel estimates and the laws of the iterated logarithms for a switch-walk-switch random walk on a lamplighter graph under the condition that the random walk on the underlying graph enjoys sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates.
The lamplighter group over $\mathbb Z$ is the wreath product $\mathbb Z_q \wr \mathbb Z$. With respect to a natural generating set, its Cayley graph is the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,q)$. We study harmonic functions for the "simple" Laplacian on this graph, and more generally, for a class of random walks on $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The DL-graphs are horocyclic products of two trees, and we give a full description of all positive harmonic functions in terms of the boundaries of these two trees. In particular, we determine the minimal Martin boundary, that is, the set of minimal positive ha…
We answer positively a question of Kaimanovich and Vershik from 1979, showing that the final configuration of lamps for simple random walk on the lamplighter group over ${\Bbb Z}^d$ ($d \ge 3$) is the Poisson boundary. For $d \ge 5$, this had been shown earlier by Erschler (2011). We extend this to walks of more general types on more general groups.
We prove a Law of Iterated Logarithm for random walks on a family of diagonal products constructed by Brieussel and Zheng (2021). This provides a wide variety of new examples of Law of Iterated Logarithm behaviours for random walks on groups. In particular, it follows that for any $\frac{1}{2}\leq β\leq 1$ there is a group $G$ and random walk $W_n$ on $G$ with $\mathbb{E}|W_n|\simeq n^β$ such that $$0<\limsup \frac{|W_n|}{n^β(\log\log n)^{1-β}}<\infty$$ and $$0<\liminf \frac{|W_n|(\log\log n)^{1-β}}{n^β}<\infty.$$
The main goal of this paper is to determine the Poisson boundary of lamplighter random walks over a general class of discrete groups $Γ$ endowed with a rich boundary. The starting point is the Strip Criterion of identification of the Poisson boundary for random walks on discrete groups due to Kaimanovich. A geometrical method for constructing the strip as a subset of the lamplighter group starting with a smaller strip in the base group $Γ$ is developed. Then, this method is applied to several classes of base groups $Γ$: groups with infinitely many ends, hyperbolic groups in the sense of Gromov…
Suppose we are given an infinite, finitely generated group $G$ and a transient random walk on the wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/ 2\mathbb{Z})\wr G$, such that its projection on $G$ is transient and has finite first moment. This random walk can be interpreted as a lamplighter random walk on $G$. Our aim is to show that the random walk on the wreath product escapes to infinity with respect to a suitable (pseudo-)metric faster than its projection onto $G$. We also address the case where the pseudo-metric is the length of a shortest ``travelling salesman tour''. In this context, and excluding some d…
We introduce the discrete affine group of a regular tree as a finitely generated subgroup of the affine group. We describe the Poisson boundary of random walks on it as a space of configurations. We compute isoperimetric profile and Hilbert compression exponent of the group. We also discuss metric relationship with some lamplighter groups and lamplighter graphs.
We show that the Plancherel measure of the lamplighter random walk on a graph coincides with the expected spectral measure of the absorbing random walk on the Bernoulli percolation clusters. In the subcritical regime the spectrum is pure point and we construct a complete orthonormal basis of finitely supported eigenfunctions.
Recently, several papers have been devoted to the analysis of lamplighter random walks, in particular when the underlying graph is the infinite path $\mathbb{Z}$. In the present paper, we develop a spectral analysis for lamplighter random walks on finite graphs. In the general case, we use the $C_2$-symmetry to reduce the spectral computations to a series of eigenvalue problems on the underlying graph. In the case the graph has a transitive isometry group $G$, we also describe the spectral analysis in terms of the representation theory of the wreath product $C_2\wr G$. We apply our theory to t…
Given a finite graph G, a vertex of the lamplighter graph consists of a zero-one labeling of the vertices of G, and a marked vertex of G. For transitive graphs G, we show that, up to constants, the relaxation time for simple random walk in corresponding lamplighter graph is the maximal hitting time for simple random walk in G, while the mixing time in total variation on the lamplighter graph is the expected cover time on G. The mixing time in the uniform metric on the lamplighter graph admits a sharp threshold, and equals |G| multiplied by the relaxation time on G, up to a factor of log |G|. F…
The main purpose of this thesis is to study the interplay between geometric properties of infinite graphs and analytic and probabilistic objects such as transition operators, harmonic functions and random walks on these graphs. For a transient random walk, there are several problems one is interested in: for instance to study its convergence, to describe the bounded harmonic functions for the random walk, to describe its Poisson boundary, or to study the parameter of exponential decay of the transition probabilities of the random walk. In the first part of the thesis we deal with similar probl…
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group and $X$ its Cayley graph with respect to a finite, symmetric generating set $S$. Furthermore, let $H$ be a finite group and $H \wr G$ the lamplighter group (wreath product) over $G$ with group of "lamps" $H$. We show that the spectral measure (Plancherel measure) of any symmetric "switch--walk--switch" random walk on $H \wr G$ coincides with the expected spectral measure (integrated density of states) of the random walk with absorbing boundary on the cluster of the group identity for Bernoulli site percolation on $X$ with parameter $p = 1/|H|$. The return …
We show that the measure on markings of $\mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, with elements of ${0,1}$ given by i.i.d. fair coin flips on the range $\mathcal {R}$ of a random walk $X$ run until time $T$ and 0 otherwise becomes indistinguishable from the uniform measure on such markings at the threshold $T=1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that the total variation mixing time of the random walk on the lamplighter graph $\mathbf {Z}_2\wr \mathbf {Z}_n^d$, $d\geq3$, has a cutoff with threshold $1/2T_{\mathrm {cov}}(\mathbf {Z}_n^d)$. We give a general criteri…
Suppose we are given a homogeneous tree $\mathcal{T}_q$ of degree $q\geq 3$, where at each vertex sits a lamp, which can be switched on or off. This structure can be described by the wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/2)\wr Γ$, where $Γ=\ast_{i=1}^q \mathbb{Z}/2$ is the free product group of $q$ factors $\mathbb{Z}/2$. We consider a transient random walk on a Cayley graph of $(\mathbb{Z}/2)\wr Γ$, for which we want to compute lower and upper bounds for the rate of escape, that is, the speed at which the random walk flees to infinity.
Suppose that $\CG$ is a finite, connected graph and $X$ is a lazy random walk on $\CG$. The lamplighter chain $X^\diamond$ associated with $X$ is the random walk on the wreath product $\CG^\diamond = \Z_2 \wr \CG$, the graph whose vertices consist of pairs $(f,x)$ where $f$ is a labeling of the vertices of $\CG$ by elements of $\Z_2$ and $x$ is a vertex in $\CG$. There is an edge between $(f,x)$ and $(g,y)$ in $\CG^\diamond$ if and only if $x$ is adjacent to $y$ in $\CG$ and $f(z) = g(z)$ for all $z \neq x,y$. In each step, $X^\diamond$ moves from a configuration $(f,x)$ by updating $x$ to $y$…
The Diestel-Leader graph DL(q,r) is the horocyclic product of the homogeneous trees with respective degrees q+1 and r+1. When q=r, it is the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group (wreath product of the cyclic group of order q with the infinite cyclic group) with respect to a natural generating set. For the "Simple random walk" (SRW) operator on the latter group, Grigorchuk & Zuk and Dicks & Schick have determined the spectrum and the (on-diagonal) spectral measure (Plancherel measure). Here, we show that thanks to the geometric realization, these results can be obtained for all DL-graphs by di…
Let $(G,μ)$ be a discrete group with a generating probability measure. Nevo shows that if $G$ has property (T) then there exists an $ε>0$ such that the Furstenberg entropy of any $(G,μ)$-stationary ergodic space is either zero or larger than $ε$. Virtually free groups, such as $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$, do not have property (T), and neither do their extensions, such as surface groups. For these, we construct stationary actions with arbitrarily small, positive entropy. This construction involves building and lifting spaces of lamplighter groups. For some classical lamplighters, these spaces realize a …
We derive Donsker-Vardhan type results for functionals of the occupation times when the underlying random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ is in the domain of attraction of an operator-stable law on $\mathbb R^d$. Applications to random walks on wreath products (also known as lamplighter groups) are given.
We prove the law of large numbers for the drift of random walks on the two-dimensional lamplighter group, under the assumption that the random walk has finite $(2+ε)$-moment. This result is in contrast with classical examples of abelian groups, where the displacement after $n$ steps, normalised by its mean, does not concentrate, and the limiting distribution of the normalised $n$-step displacement admits a density whose support is $[0,\infty)$. We study further examples of groups, some with random walks satisfying LLN for drift and other examples where such concentration phenomenon does not ho…
Benjamini, Lyons and Schramm [Random Walks and Discrete Potential Theory (1999) 56-84] considered properties of an infinite graph G, and the simple random walk on it, that are preserved by random perturbations. In this paper we solve several problems raised by those authors. The anchored expansion constant is a variant of the Cheeger constant; its positivity implies positive lower speed for the simple random walk, as shown by Virag [Geom. Funct. Anal. 10 (2000) 1588-1605]. We prove that if G has a positive anchored expansion constant, then so does every infinite cluster of independent percolat…
Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, $H$ a lcsc totally disconnected group and $ρ: Γ\rightarrow H$ a homomorphism with dense image. We develop a general and explicit technique which provides, for every compact open subgroup $L < H$ and bi-$L$-invariant probability measure $θ$ on $H$, a Furstenberg discretization $τ$ of $θ$ such that the Poisson boundary of $(H,θ)$ is a $τ$-boundary. Among other things, this technique allows us to construct examples of finitely supported random walks on certain lamplighter groups and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, whose Poisson boundaries are prime, but no…
The greedy walk is a deterministic walk that always moves from its current position to the nearest not yet visited point. In this paper we consider the greedy walk on an inhomogeneous Poisson point process on the real line. Our primary interest is whether the walk visits all points of the point process, and we determine sufficient and necessary conditions on the mean measure of the point process for this to happen. Moreover, we provide precise results on threshold functions for the property of visiting all points.
We consider a random walk among a Poisson system of moving traps on ${\mathbb Z}$. In earlier work [DGRS12], the quenched and annealed survival probabilities of this random walk have been investigated. Here we study the path of the random walk conditioned on survival up to time $t$ in the annealed case and show that it is subdiffusive. As a by-product, we obtain an upper bound on the number of so-called thin points of a one-dimensional random walk, as well as a bound on the total volume of the holes in the random walk's range.
We characterize the subexponential densities on $(0,\infty)$ for compound Poisson distributions on $[0,\infty)$ with absolutely continuous Lévy measures. As a corollary, we show that the class of all subexponential probability density functions on $\mathbb R_+$ is closed under generalized convolution roots of compound Poisson sums. Moreover, we give an application to the subexponential density on $(0,\infty)$ for the distribution of the supremum of a random walk.
We prove that random walks on Thompson's group $F$ driven by strictly non-degenerate finitely supported probability measures $μ$ have a non-trivial Poisson boundary. The proof consists in an explicit construction of two different non-trivial $μ$-boundaries. Both of them are defined in terms of the Schreier graph $Γ$ on the dyadic-rational orbit of the canonical action of $F$ on the unit interval (actually, we consider a natural embedding of $F$ into the group $PLF({\mathbb R})$ of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the real line, and realize $Γ$ on the dyadic-rational orbit in ${\mathbb R}$). …
We determine, to within O(1), the expected minimal position at level n in certain branching random walks. The walks under consideration have displacement vector (v_1,v_2,...), where each v_j is the sum of j independent Exponential(1) random variables and the different v_i need not be independent. In particular, our analysis applies to the Poisson-Dirichlet branching random walk and to the Poisson-weighted infinite tree. As a corollary, we also determine the expected height of a random recursive tree to within O(1).
Given a simple transient random walk $(S_n)_{n\geq 0}$ in $\mathbf{Z}$ and a stationary sequence of real random variables $(ξ(s))_{s\in \mathbf{Z}}$, we investigate the extremes of the sequence $(ξ(S_n))_{n\geq 0}$. Under suitable conditions, we make explicit the extremal index and show that the point process of exceedances converges to a compound Poisson point process. We give two examples for which the cluster size distribution can be made explicit.
This paper focuses on the problem of modeling for small world effect on complex networks. Let's consider the supercritical Poisson continuous percolation on $d$-dimensional torus $T^d_n$ with volume $n^d$. By adding "long edges (short cuts)" randomly to the largest percolation cluster, we obtain a random graph $\mathscr G_n$. In the present paper, we first prove that the diameter of $\mathscr G_n$ grows at most polynomially fast in $\ln n$ and we call it the Poisson Geometry Small World. Secondly, we prove that the random walk on $\mathscr G_n$ possesses the rapid mixing property, namely, the …
We establish, under the Cramer exponential moment condition in a neighbourhood of zero, the Extended Large Deviation Principle for the Random Walk and the Compound Poisson processes in the metric space $\V$ of functions of finite variation on $[0,\infty)$ with the modified Borovkov metric $\r(f,g)= \r_\B(\hat{f},\hat{g}) $, where $ \hat f(t)= f(t)/(1+t)$, $t\in \R$, and $\r_\B$ is the Borovkov metric. LDP in this space is "more precise" than that with the usual metric of uniform convergence on compacts.
We study the $β$ analogue of the nonintersecting Poisson random walks. We derive a stochastic differential equation of the Stieltjes transform of the empirical measure process, which can be viewed as a dynamical version of the Nekrasov's equation in [7, Section 4]. We find that the empirical measure process converges weakly in the space of cádlág measure-valued processes to a deterministic process, characterized by the quantized free convolution, as introduced in [11]. For suitable initial data, we prove that the rescaled empirical measure process converges weakly in the space of distributions…
Suppose that G and H are finite, connected graphs, G regular, X is a lazy random walk on G and Z is a reversible ergodic Markov chain on H. The generalized lamplighter chain X* associated with X and Z is the random walk on the wreath product H\wr G, the graph whose vertices consist of pairs (f,x) where f=(f_v)_{v\in V(G)} is a labeling of the vertices of G by elements of H and x is a vertex in G. In each step, X* moves from a configuration (f,x) by updating x to y using the transition rule of X and then independently updating both f_x and f_y according to the transition probabilities on H; f_z…
For any countable group with infinite conjugacy classes we construct a family of forests on the group. For each of them there is a random walk on the group with the property that its sample paths almost surely converge to the geometric boundary of the forest in a way that resembles the simple random walks on trees. It allows us to identify the Poisson boundary of the random walk with the boundary of the forest and to show that the group action on the Poisson boundary is free (which, in particular, implies non-triviality of the Poisson boundary). As a consequence we obtain that any countable gr…
We consider random walks on finitely or countably generated free semigroups, and identify their Poisson boundaries for classes of measures which fail to meet the classical entropy criteria. In particular, we introduce the notion of w-logarithmic moment, and we show that if a random walk on a free semigroup has either finite entropy or finite w-logarithmic moment for some word w, then the space of infinite words with the resulting hitting measure is the Poisson boundary.
We consider random walks on non-amenable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(p,q) and describe their Poisson-Furstenberg boundary. The latter is a probabilistic model for the long-time behaviour of the random walk. In our situation, we identify it in terms of the space of ends of the Bass-Serre tree and the real line using Kaimanovich's strip criterion.
We offer a unified approach to the theory of concave majorants of random walks by providing a path transformation for a walk of finite length that leaves the law of the walk unchanged whilst providing complete information about the concave majorant. This leads to a description of a walk of random geometric length as a Poisson point process of excursions away from its concave majorant, which is then used to find a complete description of the concave majorant for a walk of infinite length. In the case where subsets of increments may have the same arithmetic mean, we investigate three nested comp…
We consider a directed polymer model in dimension $1+1$, where the disorder is given by the occupation field of a Poisson system of independent random walks on $\mathbb Z$. In a suitable continuum and weak disorder limit, we show that the family of quenched partition functions of the directed polymer converges to the Stratonovich solution of a multiplicative stochastic heat equation (SHE) with a Gaussian noise, whose space-time covariance is given by the heat kernel. In contrast to the case with space-time white noise where the solution of the SHE admits a Wiener-Itô chaos expansion, we establ…
We study Schroedinger operators with random edge weights and their expected spectral measures $μ_H$ near zero. We prove that the measure exhibits a spike of the form $μ_H(-\varepsilon,\varepsilon) \sim \frac{C}{| \log\varepsilon|^2}$ (first observed by Dyson), without assuming independence or any regularity of edge weights. We also identify the limiting local eigenvalue distribution, which is different from Poisson and the usual random matrix statistics. We then use the result to compute Novikov-Shubin invariants for various groups, including lamplighter groups and lattices in the Lie group So…
Consider the graph induced by $\mathbb{Z}^d$, equipped with uniformly elliptic random conductances. At time $0$, place a Poisson point process of particles on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and let them perform independent simple random walks. Tessellate the graph into cubes indexed by $i\in\mathbb{Z}^d$ and tessellate time into intervals indexed by $τ$. Given a local event $E(i,τ)$ that depends only on the particles inside the space time region given by the cube $i$ and the time interval $τ$, we prove the existence of a Lipschitz connected surface of cells $(i,τ)$ that separates the origin from infinity on w…
There are two ways of speeding up MCMC algorithms: (1) construct more complex samplers that use gradient and higher order information about the target and (2) design a control variate to reduce the asymptotic variance. While the efficiency of (1) as a function of dimension has been studied extensively, this paper provides first rigorous results linking the growth of the asymptotic variance in (2) with dimension. Specifically, we construct a control variate for a $d$-dimensional Random walk Metropolis chain with an IID target using the solution of the Poisson equation for the scaling limit in t…
We review some old and prove some new results on the survival probability of a random walk among a Poisson system of moving traps on Z^d, which can also be interpreted as the solution of a parabolic Anderson model with a random time-dependent potential. We show that the annealed survival probability decays asymptotically as e^{-λ_1\sqrt{t}} for d=1, as e^{-λ_2 t/\log t} for d=2, and as e^{-λ_d t} for d>= 3, where λ_1 and λ_2 can be identified explicitly. In addition, we show that the quenched survival probability decays asymptotically as e^{-\tilde λ_d t}, with \tilde λ_d>0 for all d>= 1. A ke…
We propose a class of strongly efficient rare event simulation estimators for random walks and compound Poisson processes with a regularly varying increment/jump-size distribution in a general large deviations regime. Our estimator is based on an importance sampling strategy that hinges on the heavy-tailed sample path large deviations result recently established in Rhee, Blanchet, and Zwart (2016). The new estimators are straightforward to implement and can be used to systematically evaluate the probability of a wide range of rare events with bounded relative error. They are "universal" in the…
