We prove the law of large numbers for the drift of random walks on the two-dimensional lamplighter group, under the assumption that the random walk has finite $(2+ε)$-moment. This result is in contrast with classical examples of abelian groups, where the displacement after $n$ steps, normalised by its mean, does not concentrate, and the limiting distribution of the normalised $n$-step displacement admits a density whose support is $[0,\infty)$. We study further examples of groups, some with random walks satisfying LLN for drift and other examples where such concentration phenomenon does not hold, and study relation of this property with asymptotic geometry of groups.
We derive Donsker-Vardhan type results for functionals of the occupation times when the underlying random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ is in the domain of attraction of an operator-stable law on $\mathbb R^d$. Applications to random walks on wreath products (also known as lamplighter groups) are given.
We study the neighborhoods of a typical point $Z_n$ visited at $n$-th step of a random walk, determined by the condition that the transition probabilities stay close to $μ^{*n}(Z_n)$. If such neighborhood contains a ball of radius $C \sqrt{n}$, we say that the random walk has almost invariant transition probabilities. We prove that simple random walks on wreath products of $\mathbb{Z}$ with finite groups have almost invariant distributions. A weaker version of almost invariance implies a necessary condition of Ozawa's criterion for the property $H_{\rm FD}$. We define and study the radius of a…
We determine the precise asymptotic behaviour (in space) of the Green kernel of simple random walk with drift on the Diestel-Leader graph $DL(q,r)$, where $q,r \ge 2$. The latter is the horocyclic product of two homogeneous trees with respective degrees $q+1$ and $r+1$. When $q=r$, it is the Cayley graph of the wreath product (lamplighter group) ${\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ with respect to a natural set of generators. We describe the full Martin compactification of these random walks on $DL$-graphs and, in particular, lamplighter groups. This completes and provides a better approach to prev…
We show that the last zero before time $t$ of a recurrent Bessel process with drift starting at $0$ has the same distribution as the product of an independent right censored exponential random variable and a beta random variable. This extends a recent result of Schulte-Geers and Stadje (2017) from Brownian motion with drift to recurrent Bessel processes with drift. Our proof is intuitive and direct while avoiding heavy computations. For this we develop a novel additive decomposition for the square of a Bessel process with drift that may be of independent interest.
Let T be the homogeneous tree with degree and G a finitely generated group whose Cayley graph is T. The associated lamplighter group is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order r with G. For a large class of random walks on this group, we prove almost sure convergence to a natural geometric boundary. If the probability law governing the random walk has finite first moment, then the probability space formed by this geometric boundary together with the limit distribution of the random walk is proved to be maximal, that is, the Poisson boundary. We also prove that the Dirichlet problem at …
We consider a one-dimensional diffusion process $X$ in a $(-κ/2)$-drifted Brownian potential for $κ\neq 0$. We are interested in the maximum of its local time, and study its almost sure asymptotic behaviour, which is proved to be different from the behaviour of the maximum local time of the transient random walk in random environment. We also obtain the convergence in law of the maximum local time of $X$ under the annealed law after suitable renormalization when $κ\geq 1$. Moreover, we characterize all the upper and lower classes for the hitting times of $X$, in the sense of Paul Lévy, and pro…
By the Cameron--Martin theorem, if a function $f$ is in the Dirichlet space $D$, then $B+f$ has the same a.s. properties as standard Brownian motion, $B$. In this paper we examine properties of $B+f$ when $f \notin D$. We start by establishing a general 0-1 law, which in particular implies that for any fixed $f$, the Hausdorff dimension of the image and the graph of $B+f$ are constants a.s. (This 0-1 law applies to any Lévy process.) Then we show that if the function $f$ is Hölder$(1/2)$, then $B+f$ is intersection equivalent to $B$. Moreover, $B+f$ has double points a.s. in dimensions $d\le 3…
Let $(X_n)$ be a Markov chain on a standard borelian space $\mathbb{X}$. Any stopping time $τ$ such that $\mathbb{E}_xτ$ is finite for all $x\in\mathbb{X}$ induces a Markov chain in $\mathbb{X}$. In this article, we show that there is a bijection between the invariant measures for the original chain and for the induced one. We then study drift functions and prove a few relations that link the Markov operator for the original chain and for the induced one. The aim is to use this drift function and the induced operator to link the solution to Poisson's equation $(I\_d-P)g=f$ for the original cha…
By using the law of the excursions of Brownian motion with drift, we find the distribution of the $n-$th passage time of Brownian motion through a straight line $S(t)= a + bt.$ In the special case when $b = 0,$ we extend the result to a space-time transformation of Brownian motion.
Let X be the solution of the multidimensional stochastic differential equationdX(t) = b(t, X(t)) dt + sigma(t, X(t)) dW(t)\, with X(0)=x where W is a standard Brownian motion. We show that when b is measurable and sigma is in an appropriate Sobolev space, the law of X satisfies a uniform quadratic transportation inequality.
We consider a diffusion process $X$ in a random potential $\V$ of the form $\V_x = §_x -δx$ where $δ$ is a positive drift and $§$ is a strictly stable process of index $α\in (1,2)$ with positive jumps. Then the diffusion is transient and $X_t / \log^αt$ converges in law towards an exponential distribution. This behaviour contrasts with the case where $\V$ is a drifted Brownian motion and provides an example of a transient diffusion in a random potential which is as "slow" as in the recurrent setting.
We consider a nearest neighbor random walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice with drift towards the origin determined by an asymptotically vanishing function of the number of visits to zero. We show the existence of distinct regimes according to the rate of decay of the drift. In particular, when the rate is sufficiently slow, the position of the random walk, properly normalized, converges to a symmetric exponential law. In this regime, in contrast to the classical case, the range of the walk scales differently from its position.
This paper establishes results on the existence and uniqueness of solutions to McKean-Vlasov equations, also called mean-field stochastic differential equations, in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space setting with irregular drift. Here, McKean-Vlasov equations with additive noise are considered where the driving noise is cylindrical (fractional) Brownian motion. The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions are established for drift coefficients that are merely measurable, bounded, and continuous in the law variable. In particular, the drift coefficient is allowed to be singular in the spat…
This paper deals with the ergodicity and the existence of a strong law of large numbers for adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo. We show that a diminishing adaptation assumption together with a drift condition for positive recurrence is enough to imply ergodicity. Strengthening the drift condition to a polynomial drift condition yields a strong law of large numbers for possibly unbounded functions. These results broaden considerably the class of adaptive MCMC algorithms for which rigorous analysis is now possible. As an example, we give a detailed analysis of the Adaptive Metropolis Algorithm of…
Introducing certain singularities, we generalize the class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with so-called generalized drift. Equations with generalized drift, well-known in the literature, possess a drift that is described by the semimartingale local time of the unknown process integrated with respect to a locally finite signed measure ν. The generalization which we deal with can be interpreted as allowing more general set functions ν, for example signed measures which are only σ-finite. However, we use a different approach to describe the singular drift. For the considere…
We introduce exact methods for the simulation of sample paths of one-dimensional diffusions with a discontinuity in the drift function. Our procedures require the simulation of finite-dimensional candidate draws from probability laws related to those of Brownian motion and its local time and are based on the principle of retrospective rejection sampling. A simple illustration is provided.
We establish in this paper the existence of weak solutions of infinite-dimensional shift invariant stochastic differential equations driven by a Brownian term. The drift function is very general, in the sense that it is supposed to be neither bounded or continuous, nor Markov. On the initial law we only assume that it admits a finite specific entropy and a finite second moment. The originality of our method leads in the use of the specific entropy as a tightness tool and in the description of such infinite-dimensional stochastic process as solution of a variational problem on the path space. O…
We consider excited random walks (ERWs) on integers with a bounded number of i.i.d. cookies per site without the non-negativity assumption on the drifts induced by the cookies. Kosygina and Zerner [KZ08] have shown that when the total expected drift per site, delta, is larger than 1 then ERW is transient to the right and, moreover, for delta>4 under the averaged measure it obeys the Central Limit Theorem. We show that when delta in (2,4] the limiting behavior of an appropriately centered and scaled excited random walk under the averaged measure is described by a strictly stable law with parame…
We analyze multi-dimensional mean-field stochastic differential equations where the drift depends on the law in form of a Lebesgue integral with respect to the pushforward measure of the solution. We show existence and uniqueness of Malliavin differentiable strong solutions for irregular drift coefficients, which in particular include the case where the drift depends on the cumulative distribution function of the solution. Moreover, we examine the solution as a function in its initial condition and introduce sufficient conditions on the drift to guarantee differentiability. Under these assumpt…
Under a natural asumption on the drift, the law of the simple random walk on the multidimensional first quadrant conditioned to always stay in the first octant was obtained by O'Connell in [O]. It coincides with that of the image of the simple random walk under the multidimensional Pitman transform and can be expressed in terms of specializations of Schur functions. This result has been generalized in [LLP1] and [LLP2] for a large class of random walks on weight lattices defined from representations of Kac-Moody algebras and their conditionings to always stay in Weyl chambers. In these various…
In this paper we consider a class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems in equilibrium, constituting a dynamic random environment, together with a nearest-neighbor random walk that on occupied/vacant sites has a local drift to the right/left. We adapt a regeneration-time argument originally developed by Comets and Zeitouni for static random environments to prove that, under a space-time mixing property for the dynamic random environment called cone-mixing, the random walk has an a.s. constant global speed. In addition, we show that if the dynamic random environment is exponentially m…
We study interacting systems of linear Brownian motions whose drift vector at every time point is determined by the relative ranks of the coordinate processes at that time. Our main objective has been to study the long range behavior of the spacings between the Brownian motions arranged in increasing order. For finitely many Brownian motions interacting in this manner, we characterize drifts for which the family of laws of the vector of spacings is tight, and show its convergence to a unique stationary joint distribution given by independent exponential distributions with varying means. We als…
We study the connection between PDEs and Lévy processes running with clocks given by time-changed Poisson processes with stochastic drifts. The random times we deal with are therefore given by time-changed Poissonian jumps related to some Frobenious-Perron operators $K$ associated to random translations. Moreover, we also consider their hitting times as a random clock. Thus, we study processes driven by equations involving time-fractional operators (modelling memory) and fractional powers of the difference operator $I-K$ (modelling jumps). For this large class of processes we also provide, in …
We stu\dd y a class of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with dissipative nonlinear drift, driven by Lévy noise. Our work is divided in two parts. In the present part I we first define a Hilbert-Banach setting in which we can prove existence and uniqueness of solutions under general assumptions on the drift and the Lévy noise. We then prove a decomposition of the solution process in a stationary component and a component which vanishes asymptotically for large times in the $L^p-$sense, $p\geq1$. The law of the stationary component is identified with the unique invariant proba…
Let (Xt, t >= 0) be a diffusion process with jumps, sum of a Brownian motion with drift and a compound Poisson process. We consider T_x the first hitting time of a fixed level x > 0 by (Xt, t >= 0). We prove that the law of T_x has a density (defective when E(X1) < 0) with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
We start by first using change of measure to prove the transfer of uniqueness in law among pairs of parabolic SPDEs differing only by a drift function, under an almost sure $L^2$ condition on the drift/diffusion ratio. This is a considerably weaker condition than the usual Novikov one, and it allows us to prove uniqueness in law for the Allen-Cahn SPDE driven by space-time white noise with diffusion function $a(t,x,u)=Cu^γ$, $1/2\leγ\le1$ and $C\ne0$. The same transfer result is also valid for ordinary SDEs and hyperbolic SPDEs.
We show analogs of the classical arcsine theorem for the occupation time of a random walk in $(-\infty,0)$ in the case of a small positive drift. To study the asymptotic behavior of the total time spent in $(-\infty,0)$ we consider parametrized classes of random walks, where the convergence of the parameter to zero implies the convergence of the drift to zero. We begin with shift families, generated by a centered random walk by adding to each step a shift constant $a>0$ and then letting $a$ tend to zero. Then we study families of associated distributions. In all cases we arrive at the same lim…
In this paper we consider an interacting particle system modeled as a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motions with a drift term including a confining potential acting on each particle, and an interaction potential modeling the interaction among all the particles of the system. The limiting behavior as the size $N$ grows to infinity is achieved as a law of large numbers for the empirical process associated with the interacting particle system
In this work we consider a one-dimensional Brownian motion with constant drift moving among a Poissonian cloud of obstacles. Our main result proves convergence of the law of processes conditional on survival up to time $t$ as $t$ converges to infinity in the critical case where the drift coincides with the intensity of the Poisson process. The complements a previous result of T. Povel, who considered the same question in the case where the drift is strictly smaller than the intensity.
We consider a random walk with a negative drift and with a jump distribution which under Cramér's change of measure belongs to the domain of attraction of a spectrally positive stable law. If conditioned to reach a high level and suitably scaled, this random walk converges in law to a nondecreasing Markov process which can be interpreted as a spectrally-positive Lévy %-Khinchin process conditioned not to overshoot level one.
Given two stochastic equations with different drift terms, under very weak assumptions Liptser and Shiryaev provide the equivalence of the laws of the solutions to these equations by means of Girsanov transform. Their assumptions involve both the drift terms. We are interested in the same result but with the main assumption involving only the difference of the drift terms. Applications of our result will be presented in the finite as well as in the infinite dimensional setting.
In this paper we consider a stochastic process that may experience random reset events which bring suddenly the system to the starting value and analyze the relevant statistical magnitudes. We focus our attention on monotonous continuous-time random walks with a constant drift: the process increases between the reset events, either by the effect of the random jumps, or by the action of the deterministic drift. As a result of all these combined factors interesting properties emerge, like the existence|for any drift strength|of a stationary transition probability density function, or the faculty…
We demonstrate that two Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes, that is, solutions to certain stochastic differential equations that are driven by a Lévy process L have equivalent laws as long as the eigenvalues of the covariance operator associated to the Wiener part of L are strictly positive. Moreover, we show that in the case where the underlying Lévy process is a purely jump process, which means that neither it has a Wiener part nor the drift, the absolute continuity of the law of one solution with respect to another forces equality of the solutions almost surely.
