An approximation Ansatz for the operator solution, $U(z',z)$, of a hyperbolic first-order pseudodifferential equation, $\d_z + a(z,x,D_x)$ with $\Re (a) \geq 0$, is constructed as the composition of global Fourier integral operators with complex phases. An estimate of the operator norm in $L(H^{(s)},H^{(s)})$ of these operators is provided which allows to prove a convergence result for the Ansatz to $U(z',z)$ in some Sobolev space as the number of operators in the composition goes to $\infty$.
In this paper we investigate $L^p$ and Sobolev boundedness of a certain class of pseudodifferential operators with non-regular symbols. We employ regularisation methods, namely convolution with a net of mollifiers $(ρ_\eps)_\eps$, and we study the corresponding net of pseudodifferential operators providing $L^p$ and Sobolev estimates which relate the parameter $\eps$ with the non-regularity of the symbol.
We will present versions of the Rellich-Kondrachov theorem for pseudo-differential operators acting on localizable Hardy spaces. One of the techniques includes boundedness properties for pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class, that might be of interest in his own right, extending results previously obtained by Goldberg, Alvarez and Hounie, Taylor - among others. As application, we obtain compact embedding results for distributions in nonhomogeneous localizable Hardy-Sobolev spaces.
In this paper we obtain new estimates for bilinear pseudodifferential operators with symbol in the class $BS_{1,1}^m$, when both arguments belong to Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of the type $F_{p,q}^{n/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The inequalities are obtained as a consequence of a refinement of the classical Sobolev embedding $F^{n/p}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\hookrightarrow\mathrm{bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where we replace $\mathrm{bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ by an appropriate subspace which contains $L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$. As an application, we study the product of functions on $F_{p,q}^{n/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $1<p<\inf…
We consider toroidal pseudodifferential operators with operator-valued symbols, their mapping properties and the generation of analytic semigroups on vector-valued Besov and Sobolev spaces. We show that a parabolic toroiodal pseudodifferential operator generates an analytic semigroup both on Banach space-valued Besov spaces and on Banach space-valued Sobolev spaces. Here, no condition on the Banach space is imposed. For the proof of the Sobolev space result, we establish a uniform estimate on the kernel which is given as an infinite parameter-dependent sum. An application to abstract non-auton…
On the solvability of the mixed problem for a fractional-order equation with a time-delay argument and pseudodifferential operators with non-local boundary conditions in Sobolev classes
We study the microlocal kernel of h-pseudodifferential operators P(x,hD)-z, where z belongs to some neighborhood of size O(h) of a critical value of its principal symbol. We suppose that this critical value corresponds to a hyperbolic fixed point of the associated Hamiltonian flow. First we describe propagation of singularities at such a hyperbolic fixed point, both in the analytic and in the smooth category. In both cases, we show that the null solution is the only element of this microlocal kernel which vanishes on the stable incoming manifold, but for energies z in some discrete set. For en…
In the first part of the paper the authors study the minimal and maximal extension of a class of weighted pseudodifferential operators in the Fréchet space $L^p_{\rm loc}(Ω)$. In the second one non homogeneous microlocal properties are introduced and propagation of Sobolev singularities for solutions to (pseudo)differential equations is given. For both the arguments actual examples are provided.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic pseudodifferential operator whose symbol is generalized, resembling a representative of a Colombeau generalized function. Such equations arise, for example, after a reduction-decoupling of second-order model systems of differential equations in seismology. We prove existence of a unique generalized solution under log-type growth conditions on the symbol, thereby extending known results for the case of differential operators with generalized functions as coefficients.
We study a class of semilinear elliptic equations on spaces of tempered ultradistributions of Beurling and Roumieu type. Assuming that the linear part of the equation is an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of infinite order with a sub-exponential growth of its symbol and that the non linear part is given by an infinite sum of powers of $u$ with sub-exponential growth with respect to $u,$ we prove a regularity result in the functional setting of the quoted ultradistribution spaces for a weak Sobolev type solution $u$.
We prove an abstract theorem giving a $\langle t\rangle^ε$ bound ($\forall ε>0$) on the growth of the Sobolev norms in linear Schrödinger equations of the form $i \dot ψ= H_0 ψ+ V(t) ψ$ when the time $t \to \infty$. The abstract theorem is applied to several cases, including the cases where (i) $H_0$ is the Laplace operator on a Zoll manifold and $V(t)$ a pseudodifferential operator of order smaller then 2; (ii) $H_0$ is the (resonant or nonresonant) Harmonic oscillator in $R^d$ and $V(t)$ a pseudodifferential operator of order smaller then $H_0$ depending in a quasiperiodic way on time. The p…
We establish sharp $L^2$-Sobolev estimates for classes of pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols whose non-pseudodifferential (Fourier integral operator) parts exhibit two-sided fold singularities. The operators considered include both singular integral operators along curves in $R^2$ with simple inflection points and normal operators arising in linearized seismic imaging in the presence of fold caustics.
We investigate global microlocal properties of localization operators and Shubin pseudodifferential operators. The microlocal regularity is measured in terms of a scale of Shubin-type Sobolev spaces. In particular, we prove microlocality and microellipticity of these operators.
A class of pseudodifferential operators on the Heisenberg group is defined. As it should be, this class is an algebra containing the class of differential operators. Furthermore, those pseudodifferential operators act continuously on Sobolev spaces and the loss of derivatives may be controled by the order of the operator. Although a large number of works have been devoted in the past to the construction and the study of algebras of variable-coefficient operators, including some very interesting works on the Heisenberg group, our approach is different, and in particular puts into light microloc…

In this paper we expand on B.-W. Schulze's abstract edge pseudodifferential calculus and introduce a larger class of operators that is modeled on Hörmander's $\varrho,δ$ calculus, where $0 \leq δ< \varrho \leq 1$. This expansion is motivated by recent work on boundary value problems for elliptic wedge operators with variable indicial roots by G. Mendoza and the author, where operators of type $1,δ$ for $0 < δ< 1$ appear naturally. Some of the results of this paper also represent improvements over the existing literature on the standard abstract edge calculus of operators of type $1,0$, such as…
In this paper, we are interested in the construction of a bilinear pseudodifferential calculus. We define some symbolic classes which contains those of Coifman-Meyer. These new classes allow us to consider operators closely related to the bilinear Hilbert transform. We give a description of the action of our bilinear operators on Sobolev spaces. These classes also have a ``nice'' behavior through the transposition and the composition operations that we will present.
We characterize microlocal regularity of Colombeau generalized functions by an appropriate extension of the classical notion of micro-ellipticity to pseudodifferential operators with slow scale generalized symbols. Thus we obtain an alternative, yet equivalent, way to determine generalized wave front sets, which is analogous to the original definition of the wave front set of distributions via intersections over characteristic sets. The new methods are then applied to regularity theory of generalized solutions of (pseudo-)differential equations, where we extend the general noncharacteristic re…
We study the complex powers $A^{z}$ of an elliptic, strictly positive pseudodifferential operator $A$ using an axiomatic method that combines the approaches of Guillemin and Seeley. In particular, we introduce a class of algebras, ``extended Weyl algebras,'' whose definition was inspired by Guillemin's paper on the subject. An extended Weyl algebra can be thought of as an algebra of ``abstract pseudodifferential operators.'' Many algebras of pseudodifferential operators are extended Weyl algebras. Several results typical for algebras of pseudodifferential operators (asymptotic completeness, co…
We study dispersive mixed-order systems of pseudodifferential operators in the setting of $L^p$-Sobolev spaces. Under the weak condition of quasi-hyperbolicity, these operators generate a semigroup in the space of tempered distributions. However, if the basic space is a tuple of $L^p$-Sobolev spaces, a strongly continuous semigroup is in many cases only generated if $p=2$ or $n=1$. The results are applied to the linear thermoelastic plate equation inertial term and with Fourier's or Maxwell-Cattaneo's law of heat conduction.
This paper is devoted to a simpler derivation of energy estimates compared to previously existing ones, for effectively hyperbolic operators. One of main points is no use of general Fourier integral operators and another point is an efficient use of Weyl calculus of pseudodifferential operators associated with several different metrics.
Smooth pseudodifferential operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be characterized by their mapping properties between $L^p-$Sobolev spaces due to Beals and Ueberberg. In applications such a characterization would also be useful in the non-smooth case, for example to show the regularity of solutions of a partial differential equation. Therefore, we will show that every linear operator $P$, which satisfies some specific continuity assumptions, is a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator of the symbol-class $C^τ S^m_{1,0}(\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$. The main new difficulties are the limited mapp…
We investigate properties of pseudodifferential operators on $L^2$ space on manifold with ends including asymptotically conical or hyperbolic ends. Our pseudodifferential operators are a generalization of the canonical quantization which naturally appears in the quantum mechanics on curved spaces. We prove a Calderón-Vaillancourt type theorem for our pseudodifferential operators and discuss a construction of parametrix of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with ends.
Boundedness properties for pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the bilinear Hörmander classes of sufficiently negative order are proved. The results are obtained in the scale of Lebesgue spaces and, in some cases, end-point estimates involving weak-type spaces and BMO are provided as well. From the Lebesgue space estimates, Sobolev ones are then easily obtained using functional calculus and interpolation. In addition, it is shown that, in contrast with the linear case, operators associated with symbols of order zero may fail to be bounded on products of Lebesgue spaces.
We study the a priori estimates,existence/nonexistence of radial sign changing solution, and the Palais-Smale characterisation of the problem $-\De_{\Bn}u - \la u = |u|^{p-1}u, u\in H^1(\Bn)$ in the hyperbolic space $\Bn$ where $1<p\leq\frac{N+2}{N-2}$. We will also prove the existence of sign changing solution to the Hardy-Sobolev-Mazya equation and the critical Grushin problem.
We define classes of pseudodifferential operators on $G$-bundles with compact base and give a generalized $L^2$ Fredholm theory for invariant operators in these classes in terms of von Neumann's $G$-dimension. We combine this formalism with a generalized Paley-Wiener theorem, valid for bundles with unimodular structure groups, to provide solvability criteria for invariant operators. This formalism also gives a basis for a $G$-index for these operators. We also define and describe a transversal dimension and its corresponding Fredholm theory in terms of anisotropic Sobolev estimates, valid also…
It is proved that modulation in time and space of periodic wave trains, of the defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, can be approximated by solutions of the Whitham modulation equations, in the hyperbolic case, on a natural time scale. The error estimates are based on existence, uniqueness, and energy arguments, in Sobolev spaces on the real line. An essential part of the proof is the inclusion of higher-order corrections to Whitham theory, and concomitant higher-order energy estimates.
We construct a parametrix of a resolvent of elliptic differential operators acting on half-densities on manifolds with ends. The construction is carried out by introducing suitable pseudodifferential operators compatible with the end structure. Our class of pseudodifferential operators and symbols is independent of the choice of Riemannian metric on the manifold and applicable to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. As an application, we prove the essential self-adjointness of elliptic symmetric differential operators on manifolds.
We use microlocal radial estimates to prove the full limiting absorption principle for $P$, a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions as of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond. We define the scattering matrix for $P-ω$ with generic $ω\in \mathbb R$ and show that the scattering matrix extends to a unitary operator on appropriate $L^2$ spaces. After conjugation with natural reference operators, the scattering matrix becomes a $0$th order Fourier integral operator with a canonical relation associated to the bicharacteristics of $P-ω$. The ope…
We consider here pseudo-differential operators whose symbol $σ(x,ξ)$ is not infinitely smooth with respect to $x$. Decomposing such symbols into four -sometimes five- components and using tools of paradifferential calculus, we derive sharp estimates on the action of such pseudo-differential operators on Sobolev spaces and give explicit expressions for their operator norm in terms of the symbol $σ(x,ξ)$. We also study commutator estimates involving such operators, and generalize or improve the so-called Kato-Ponce and Calderon-Coifman-Meyer estimates in various ways.
For operators belonging either to a class of global bisingular pseudodifferential operators on $R^m \times R^n$ or to a class of bisingular pseudodifferential operators on a product $M \times N$ of two closed smooth manifolds, we show the equivalence of their ellipticity (defined by the invertibility of certain associated homogeneous principal symbols) and their Fredholm mapping property in associated scales of Sobolev spaces. We also prove the spectral invariance of these operator classes and then extend these results to the even larger classes of Toeplitz type operators.
Let L^\star be a filtered algebra of abstract pseudodifferential operators equipped with a notion of ellipticity, and T^\star be a subalgebra of operators of the form P_1AP_0, where P_0 and P_1 are two projections. The elements of L^\star act as linear continuous operators in certain scales of abstract Sobolev spaces, the elements of the subalgebra in the corresponding subspaces determined by the projections. We study how the ellipticity in L^\star descends to T^\star, focusing on parametrix construction, Fredholm property, and homogeneous principal symbols. Applications concern SG-pseudodiffe…
We introduce a refined Sobolev scale on a vector bundle over a closed infinitely smooth manifold. This scale consists of inner product Hörmander spaces parametrized with a real number and a function varying slowly at infinity in the sense of Karamata. We prove that these spaces are obtained by the interpolation with a function parameter between inner product Sobolev spaces. An arbitrary classical elliptic pseudodifferential operator acting between vector bundles of the same rank is investigated on this scale. We prove that this operator is bounded and Fredholm on pairs of appropriate Hörmander…
For a large class of semiclassical pseudodifferential operators, including Schrödinger operators, $ P (h) = -h^2 Δ_g + V (x) $, on compact Riemannian manifolds, we give logarithmic lower bounds on the mass of eigenfunctions outside neighbourhoods of generic closed hyperbolic orbits. More precisely we show that if $ A $ is a pseudodifferential operator which is microlocally equal to the identity near the hyperbolic orbit and microlocally zero away from the orbit, then \[ \| u \| \leq C (\sqrt{\log(1/h)}/ h) \| P (h)u \| + C \sqrt {\log(1/h)} \| (I - A) u \| . \] This generalizes earlier estimat…
Let $P$ be a classical pseudodifferential operator of complex order $m$ on an $n$-dimensional smooth manifold $Ω_1$. For the truncation $P_Ω$ to a smooth subset $Ω$ there is a well-known theory of boundary value problems when $P_Ω$ has the transmission property (preserves $C^\infty (\barΩ)$) and is of integer order; the calculus of Boutet de Monvel. Many interesting operators, such as for example complex powers of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^μ$ with noninteger mu, are not covered. They have instead the mu-transmission property defined in Hörmander's books, mapping $x_n^μC^\infty (\barΩ)$ into $C^\inft…
This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and pseudodifferential equations with strongly singular coefficients and data, modelled as members of algebras of generalised functions. We employ the recently developed theory of generalised Fourier integral operators to construct parametrices for the solutions and to describe propagation of singularities in this setting. As required tools, the construction of generalised solutions to eikonal and transport equations is given and results on the microlocal regularity of the kernels of generalised Fourier integral operators …
We obtain improved bounds for pseudodifferential operators with rough symbols on Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators. The symbols $a(x,η)$ are elements of $C^{r}_{*}S^{m}_{1,δ}$ classes that have limited regularity in the $x$ variable. We show that the associated pseudodifferential operator $a(x,D)$ maps between Sobolev spaces $\mathcal{H}^{s,p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and $\mathcal{H}^{t,p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ over the Hardy space for Fourier integral operators $\mathcal{H}^{p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. Our main result is that for all $r>0$, $m=0$ and $δ=1/2$, there exists an interval…
We study the global strong solutions to a 3-dimensional parabolic-hyperbolic Keller-Segel model with initial data close to a stable equilibrium with perturbations belonging to $L^2(\mathbb R^3)\times H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We obtain global well-posedness and decay property. Furthermore, if the mean value of initial cell density is smaller than a suitabale constant, then the chemical concentration decays exponentially to zero as $t$ goes to infinity. Proofs of the main results are based on an application of Fourier analysis method to uniform estimates for a linearized parabolic-hyperbolic system a…
We revisit Vasy's method for showing meromorphy of the resolvent for (even) asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. It provides an effective definition of resonances in that setting by identifying them with poles of inverses of a family of Fredholm differential operators. In the Euclidean case the method of complex scaling made this available since the 70's but in the hyperbolic case an effective definition was not known until recently. Here we present a simplified version which relies only on standard pseudodifferential techniques and estimates for hyperbolic operators. As a byproduct we obtain …
We consider the initial value problem for a pseudodifferential equation with first order hyperbolic part, and an order $γ> 0$ dissipative term. Under an assumption, depending on an integer parameter $L \geq 2$ such that $2 γ< L$, we construct for this initial value problem a parametrix that is a Fourier integral operator of type $ρ= 1 - γ/L$. The assumption implies that where the principal symbol of the dissipative term is zero, the terms of order up to $L-1$ in its Taylor series also vanish.
In this paper we study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for first order hyperbolic systems with constant multiplicities and with low regularity coefficients depending just on the time variable. We consider Zygmund and log-Zygmund type assumptions, and we prove well-posedness in $H^\infty$ respectively without loss and with finite loss of derivatives. The key to obtain the results is the construction of a suitable symmetrizer for our system, which allows us to recover energy estimates (with or without loss) for the hyperbolic operator under consideration. This can be achievied, in contr…
In this paper we consider linear, time dependent Schrödinger equations of the form $i \partial_t ψ= K_0 ψ+ V(t) ψ$, where $K_0$ is a positive self-adjoint operator with discrete spectrum and whose spectral gaps are asymptotically constant. We give a strategy to construct bounded perturbations $V(t)$ such that the Hamiltonian $K_0 + V(t)$ generates unbounded orbits. We apply our abstract construction to three cases: (i) the Harmonic oscillator on $\mathbb R$, (ii) the half-wave equation on $\mathbb T$ and (iii) the Dirac-Schrödinger equation on the sphere. In each case, $V(t)$ is a smooth and p…
In this paper, we prove the uniform estimates for the resolvent $(Δ- α)^{-1}$ as a map from $L^q$ to $L^{q'}$ on real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ where $α\in \mathbb{C}\setminus [(n - 1)^2/4, \infty)$ and $2n/(n + 2) \leq q < 2$. In contrast with analogous results on Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, the exponent $q$ here can be arbitrarily close to $2$. This striking improvement is due to two non-Euclidean features of hyperbolic space: the Kunze-Stein phenomenon and the exponential decay of the spectral measure. In addition, we apply this result to the study of eigenvalue bounds of the Schr…
Parameter--elliptic pseudodifferential operators given on a closed smooth manifold are investigated on the extended Sobolev scale. This scale consists of all Hilbert spaces that are interpolation spaces with respect to the Hilbert Sobolev scale. We prove that these operators set isomorphisms between appropriate spaces of the scale provided the parameter is modulo large enough. For solutions to the corresponding parameter--elliptic equations, we establish two-sided a priori estimates, in which the constants are independent of the parameter.
We use radial estimates for pseudodifferential operators to describe long time evolution of solutions to $ i u_t - P u = f $ where $ P $ is a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions and where $ f $ is smooth. This is motivated by recent results of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond [arXiv:1801.05582] concerning a microlocal model of internal waves in stratified fluids.
We prove an improved version of Poincaré-Hardy inequality in suitable subspaces of the Sobolev space on the hyperbolic space via Bessel pairs. As a consequence, we obtain a new Hardy type inequality with an improved constant (than the usual Hardy constant). Furthermore, we derive a new kind of improved Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality on the hyperbolic space.
We study strictly hyperbolic partial differential operators of second order with non-smooth coefficients. After modelling them as semiclassical Colombeau equations of log-type we provide a factorization procedure on some time-space-frequency domain. As a result the operator is written as a product of two semiclassical first-order constituents of log-type which approximates the modelled operator microlocally at infinite points. We then present a diagonalization method so that microlocally at infinity the governing equation is equal to a coupled system of two semiclassical first-order strictly h…
We study the normal operator to the geodesic X-ray transform on functions in the setting of simple asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We construct a parametrix for the normal operator in the 0-pseudodifferential calculus and use it show a stability estimate.
For a class of weakly hyperbolic systems of the form D_t - A(t,x,D_x), where A(t,x,D_x) is a first-order pseudodifferential operator whose principal symbol degenerates like t^{l_*} at time t=0, for some integer l_* \geq 1, well-posedness of the Cauchy problem is proved in an adapted scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, an upper bound for the loss of regularity that occurs when passing from the Cauchy data to the solutions is established. In examples, this upper bound turns out to be sharp.
Consider the Poincaré-Sobolev inequality on the hyperbolic space: for every $n \geq 3$ and $1 < p \leq \frac{n+2}{n-2},$ there exists a best constant $S_{n,p, λ}(\mathbb{B}^{n})>0$ such that $$S_{n, p, λ}(\mathbb{B}^{n})\left(~\int \limits_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}|u|^{p+1} \, {\rm d}v_{\mathbb{B}^n} \right)^{\frac{2}{p+1}} \leq\int \limits_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}\left(|\nabla_{\mathbb{B}^{n}}u|^{2}-λu^{2}\right) \, {\rm d}v_{\mathbb{B}^n},$$ holds for all $u\in C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{B}^n),$ and $λ\leq \frac{(n-1)^2}{4},$ where $\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}$ is the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of $-Δ_{\mathbb{B}^n}.$ It …
In this paper, we obtain the sharp $k$-th order Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic space ${\H}^n$ for all $k=1,2,3,\cdots$. This gives an answer to an open question raised by Aubin in [5, p.$\;$176-177] for $W^{k,2}({\H}^n)$ with $k>1$. In addition, we prove that the associated Sobolev constants are optimal.
In this note, we establish a $L^p-$version of the Poincaré--Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb H^n$. The interest of this result is that it relates both the Poincaré (or Hardy) inequality and the Sobolev inequality with the sharp constant in $\mathbb H^n$. Our approach is based on the comparison of the $L^p-$norm of gradient of the symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function in both the hyperbolic space and the Euclidean space, and the sharp Sobolev inequalities in Euclidean spaces. This approach also gives the proof of the Poincaré--Gagliardo--Nirenberg and Poincaré--…
