We introduce an harmonic analysis for iterated function systems (IFS) (X, mu) which is based on a Markov process on certain paths. The probabilities are determined by a weight function W on X. From W we define a transition operator R_W acting on functions on X, and a corresponding class of R_W-harmonic functions. The properties of these functions determine the spectral theory of L^2(mu). For affine IFSs we establish orthogonal bases in L^2(mu). These bases are generated by paths with infinite repetition of finite words. We use this in the last section to analyze tiles in R^d.
The Ruelle operator theorem has been studied extensively both in dynamical systems and iterated function systems. In this paper we study the Ruelle operator theorem for nonexpansive systems. Our theorems give some sufficient conditions for the Ruelle operator theorem to be held for a nonexpansive system.
Let $(X, \{w_j \}_{j=1}^m, \{p_j \}_{j=1}^m)$ ($2 \leq m < \infty$) be a contractive iterated function system (IFS), where $X$ is a compact subset of ${\Bbb{R}}^d$. It is well known that there exists a unique nonempty compact set $K$ such that $K=\bigcup_{j=1}^m w_j(K)$. Moreover, the Ruelle operator on $C(K)$ determined by the IFS $(X, \{w_j \}_{j=1}^m, \{p_j \}_{j=1}^m)$ ($2 \leq m < \infty$) has been introduced in \cite{FL}. In the present paper, the Ruelle operators determined by the infinite conformal IFSs are discussed. Some separation properties for the infinite conformal IFSs are inves…
The space of convex projective structures has been well studied with respect to the topological entropy. But, to better understand the geometry of the structure, we study the entropy of the Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measure and show that it is a continuous function.
We study existence and uniqueness of the fixed points solutions of a large class of non-linear variable discounted transfer operators associated to a sequential decision-making process. We establish regularity properties of these solutions, with respect to the immediate return and the variable discount. In addition, we apply our methods to reformulating and solving, in the setting of dynamic programming, some central variational problems on the theory of iterated function systems, Markov decision processes, discrete Aubry-Mather theory, Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures, fat solenoidal attractors, a…
This paper contains four main results associated with an attractor of a projective iterated function system (IFS). The first theorem characterizes when a projective IFS has an attractor which avoids a hyperplane. The second theorem establishes that a projective IFS has at most one attractor. In the third theorem the classical duality between points and hyperplanes in projective space leads to connections between attractors that avoid hyperplanes and repellers that avoid points as well as hyperplane attractors that avoid points and repellers that avoid hyperplanes. Finally, an index is defined …
We prove that almost every finite collection of matrices in $GL_d(\mathbb{R})$ and $SL_d(\mathbb{R})$ with positive entries is Diophantine. Next we restrict ourselves to the case $d=2$. A finite set of $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$ matrices induces a (generalized) iterated function system on the projective line $\mathbb{RP}^1$. Assuming uniform hyperbolicity and the Diophantine property, we show that the dimension of the attractor equals the minimum of 1 and the critical exponent.
We consider small perturbations of a conformal iterated function system (CIFS) produced by either adding or removing some generators with small derivative from the original. We establish a formula, utilizing transfer operators arising from the thermodynamic formalism à la Sinai--Ruelle--Bowen, which may be solved to express the Hausdorff dimension of the perturbed limit set in series form: either exactly, or as an asymptotic expansion. Significant applications include strengthening Hensley's asymptotic formula from 1992, which improved on earlier bounds due to Jarník and Kurzweil, for the Haus…
In this article we will apply complex projective metrics to sequences of complex transfer operators generated by Young towers, countable shifts and other types of distance expanding maps (possibly time dependent) with countable degrees. We will derive a sequential Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theorem for sequence of complex operators defined by such maps, and relying on it a variety of probabilistic limit theorems (finer than the CLT) for non-stationary processes follows.
Given a finite set $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ we study the dimension of the attractor $K_\mathcal{A}$ of the iterated function system induced by the projective action of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we generalise a recent result of Solomyak and Takahashi by showing that the Hausdorff dimension of $K_\mathcal{A}$ is given by the minimum of 1 and the critical exponent, under the assumption that $\mathcal{A}$ satisfies certain discreteness conditions and a Diophantine property. Our approach combines techniques from the theories of iterated function systems and Möbius semig…
We employ techniques from optimal transport in order to prove decay of transfer operators associated to iterated functions systems and expanding maps, giving rise to a new proof without requiring a Doeblin-Fortet (or Lasota-Yorke) inequality. Our main result is the following. Suppose $T$ is an expanding transformation acting on a compact metric space $M$ and $A: M \to \mathbb{R}$ a given fixed H{ö}lder function, and denote by $L$ the Ruelle operator associated to $A$. We show that if $L$ is normalized (i.e. if $L(1)=1$), then the dual transfer operator $L^*$ is an exponential contraction on th…
We study Markov processes generated by iterated function systems (IFS). The constituent maps of the IFS are monotonic transformations of the interval. We first obtain an upper bound on the number of SRB (Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measures for the IFS. Then, when all the constituent maps have common fixed points at 0 and 1, theorems are given to analyze properties of the ergodic invariant measures $δ_0$ and $δ_1$. In particular, sufficient conditions for $δ_0$ and/or $δ_1$ to be, or not to be, SRB measures are given. We apply some of our results to asset market games.
Quantum Iterated Function System on a complex projective space is defined by a family of linear operators on a complex Hilbert space. The operators define both the maps and their probabilities by one algebraic formula. Examples with conformal maps (relativistic boosts) on the Bloch sphere are discussed.
We consider new concepts of entropy and pressure for stationary systems acting on density matrices which generalize the usual ones in Ergodic Theory. Part of our work is to justify why the definitions and results we describe here are natural generalizations of the classical concepts of Thermodynamic Formalism (in the sense of R. Bowen, Y. Sinai and D. Ruelle). It is well-known that the concept of density operator should replace the concept of measure for the cases in which we consider a quantum formalism. We consider the operator $Λ$ acting on the space of density matrices $\mathcal{M}_N$ over…
We deal with the problem of asymptotic distribution of first return times to shrinking balls under iteration generated by a large general class of dynamical systems called weakly Markov. Our ultimate main result is that these distributions converge to the exponential law when the balls shrink to points. We apply this result to many classes of smooth dynamical systems that include conformal iterated function systems, rational functions on the Riemann sphere $\widehat{\mathbb C}$, and transcendental meromorphic functions on the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. We also apply them to expanding repeller…
Quantum Information is a new area of research which has been growing rapidly since the last decade. This topic is very close to potential applications to the so called Quantum Computer. In our point of view it makes sense to develop a more "dynamical point of view" of this theory. We want to consider the concepts of entropy and pressure for "stationary systems" acting on density matrices which generalize the usual ones in Ergodic Theory (in the sense of the Thermodynamic Formalism of R. Bowen, Y. Sinai and D. Ruelle). We consider the operator $\mathcal{L}$ acting on density matrices $ρ\in \mat…
We investigate whether the Hutchinson operator associated with the iterated function system (IFS) is continuous. It clarifies several partial results scattered across recent literature. While the main example for IFS with strict attractor was provided by the family of contractions (the so-called hyperbolic system), the accent was put on ensuring that various contractivity-like conditions are preserved when the Hutchinson operator is induced, unless very recently it was discovered that strict attractors are quite often present for a large class of noncontractive maps, namely projective maps. Th…
Denote $M_k$ the set of complex $k$ by $k$ matrices. We will analyze here quantum channels $ϕ_L$ of the following kind: given a measurable function $L:M_k\to M_k$ and the measure $μ$ on $M_k$ we define the linear operator $ϕ_L:M_k \to M_k$, via the expression $ρ\,\to\,ϕ_L(ρ) = \int_{M_k} L(v) ρ{L(v)}^\dagger \, \dm(v)$. A recent paper by T. Benoist, M. Fraas, Y. Pautrat, and C. Pellegrini is our starting point. They considered the case where $L$ was the identity. Under some mild assumptions on the quantum channel $ϕ_L$ we analyze the eigenvalue property for $ϕ_L$ and we define entropy for such…
