We transfer a large part of the circle of theorems characterizing the generalization of classical $H^\infty$ known as `weak* Dirichlet algebras', to Arveson's noncommutative setting of subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Nemann algebra equipped with an increasing filtration $(\mathcal{M}_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of (semifinite) von Neumann subalgebras of $\M$. For $0<p \leq\infty$, let $\h_p^c(\mathcal{M})$ denote the noncommutative column conditioned martingale Hardy space associated with the filtration $(\mathcal{M}_n)_{n\geq 1}$ and the index $p$. We prove that for $0<p<\infty$, the compatible couple $\big(\h_p^c(\mathcal{M}), \h_\infty^c(\mathcal{M})\big)$ is $K$-closed in the couple $\big(L_p(\mathcal{N}), L_\infty(\mathcal{N}) \big)$ for an appropriate amplified semifinite von …
Recently Baraglia showed how topological T-duality can be extended to apply not only to principal circle bundles, but also to non-principal circle bundles. We show that his results can also be recovered via two other methods: the homotopy-theoretic approach of Bunke and Schick, and the noncommutative geometry approach which we previously used for principal torus bundles. This work has several interesting byproducts, including a study of the K-theory of crossed products by Isom(R), the universal cover of O(2), and some interesting facts about equivariant K-theory for Z/2. In the final section o…
We provide a systematic study of a noncommutative extension of the classical Anzai skew-product for the cartesian product of two copies of the unit circle to the noncommutative 2-tori. In particular, some relevant ergodic properties are proved for these quantum dynamical systems, extending the corresponding ones enjoyed by the classical Anzai skew-product. As an application, for a uniquely ergodic Anzai skew-product $\F$ on the noncommutative $2$-torus $\ba_\a$, $\a\in\br$, we investigate the pointwise limit, $\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac1{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}ł^{-k}\F^k(x)$, for $x\in\ba_\a$ and $ł$ …
In this paper, we study the hyperbolic geometry of noncommutative balls generated by the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$, $ρ\in (0,\infty]$, for $n$-tuples of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. In particular, $ω_1$ is the operator norm, $ω_2$ is the joint numerical radius, and $ω_\infty$ is the joint spectral radius. We provide mapping theorems, von Neumann inequalities, and Schwarz type lemmas for free holomorphic functions on noncommutative balls, with respect to the hyperbolic metric $δ_ρ$, the Carath\' eodory metric $d_K$, and the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$.
We prove the operator space Grothendieck inequality for bilinear forms on subspaces of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with $2<p<\infty$. One of our results states that given a map $u: E\to F^*$, where $E, F\subset L_p(M)$ ($2<p<\infty$, $M$ being a von Neumann algebra), $u$ is completely bounded iff $u$ factors through a direct sum of a $p$-column space and a $p$-row space. We also obtain several operator space versions of the classical little Grothendieck inequality for maps defined on a subspace of a noncommutative $L_p$-space ($2<p<\infty$) with values in a $q$-column space for every $q\in [p'…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Nemann algebra equipped with an increasing filtration $(\mathcal{M}_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of (semifinite) von Neumann subalgebras of $\mathcal{M}$. For $0<p <\infty$, let $\mathsf{h}_p^c(\mathcal{M})$ denote the noncommutative column conditioned martingale Hardy space and $\bmo^c(\M)$ denote the column \lq\lq little\rq\rq \ martingale BMO space associated with the filtration $(\mathcal{M}_n)_{n\geq 1}$. We prove the following real interpolation identity: if $0<p <\infty$ and $0<θ<1$, then for $1/r=(1-θ)/p$, \[ \big(\mathsf{h}_p^c(\mathcal{M}), \bmo^c(\mathcal{M})\…
Let $0<p<q\leq\infty$ and $α\in (0,\infty]$. We give a characterization of quasi-Banach interpolation spaces for the couple $(L_p(0,α),L_q(0,α))$ in terms of two monotonicity properties, extending known results which mainly dealt with Banach spaces. This enables us to recover recent results of Cwikel and Nilsson on sequence spaces and to solve a conjecture of Levitina, Sukochev and Zanin in the setting of function spaces. We apply the results obtained to characterize symmetric spaces in which the standard forms of the noncommutative Khintchine inequalities hold.
We investigate conditions on a graph $C^*$-algebra for the existence of a faithful semifinite trace. Using such a trace and the natural gauge action of the circle on the graph algebra, we construct a smooth $(1,\infty)$-summable semfinite spectral triple. The local index theorem allows us to compute the pairing with $K$-theory. This produces invariants in the $K$-theory of the fixed point algebra, and these are invariants for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of $C^*(E)$.
We show that unital simple C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero which are locally approximated by subhomogeneous C^-algebras can be classified by their ordered $K$-theory. We apply this classification result to show that certain simple crossed products are isomorphic if they have the same ordered $K$-theory. In particular, irrational higher dimensional non-commutative tori of the form $C({\mathbb T}^k)\times_θ{\mathbb Z}$ are in fact inductive limits of circle algebras.
We prove inequalities involving noncommutative differentially subordinate martingales. More precisely, we prove that if $x$ is a self-adjoint noncommutative martingale and $y$ is weakly differentially subordinate to $x$ then $y$ admits a decomposition $dy=a +b +c$ (resp. $dy=z +w$) where $a$, $b$, and $c$ are adapted sequences (resp. $z$ and $w$ are martingale difference sequences) such that: $$ \Big\| (a_n)_{n\geq 1}\Big\|_{L_{1,\infty}({\mathcal M}\overline{\otimes}\ell_\infty)} +\Big\| \Big(\sum_{n\geq 1} \mathcal{E}_{n-1}|b_n|^2 \Big)^{{1}/{2}}\Big\|_{1, \infty} + \Big\| \Big(\sum_{n\geq 1…
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
It is known that, for a positive Dunford-Schwartz operator in a noncommutative $L^p$-space, $1\leq p<\infty$, or, more generally, in a noncommutative Orlicz space with order continuous norm, the corresponding ergodic averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly. We show that these averages converge almost uniformly in each noncommutative symmetric space $E$ such that $μ_t(x)\to 0$ as $t\to\infty$ for every $x\in E$, where $μ_t(x)$ is the non-increasing rearrangement of $x$. Noncommutative Dunford-Schwartz-type multiparameter ergodic theorems are studied. A wide range of noncommutative symmet…
We prove noncommutative Khintchine inequalities for all interpolation spaces between $L_p$ and $L_2$ with $p<2$. In particular, it follows that Khintchine inequalities hold in $L_{1,\infty}$. Using a similar method, we find a new deterministic equivalent for the $RC$-norm in all interpolation spaces between $L_p$-spaces which unifies the cases $p > 2$ and $p < 2$. It produces a new proof of Khintchine inequalities for $p<1$ for free variables. To complete the picture, we exhibit counter-examples which show that neither of the usual closed formulas for Khintchine inequalities can work in $L_{2,…
We show norm estimates for the sum of independent random variables in noncommutative $L_p$-spaces for $1<p<\infty$ following our previous work. These estimates generalize the classical Rosenthal inequality in the commutative case. Among applications, we derive an equivalence for the $p$-norm of the singular values of a random matrix with independent entries, and characterize those symmetric subspaces and unitary ideals which can be realized as subspaces of a noncommutative $L_p$ for $2<p<\infty$.
We provide an operator algebraic proof of a classical theorem of Thoma which characterizes the extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group $\mathbb{S}_\infty$. Our methods are based on noncommutative conditional independence emerging from exchangeability and we reinterpret Thoma's theorem as a noncommutative de Finetti type result. Our approach is, in parts, inspired by Jones' subfactor theory and by Okounkov's spectral proof of Thoma's theorem, and we link them by inferring spectral properties from certain commuting squares.
A (finite or countably infinite) set G of generators of an abstract C*-algebra A is called hyperrigid if for every faithful representation of A on a Hilbert space $A\subseteq \mathcal B(H)$ and every sequence of unital completely positive linear maps $ϕ_1, ϕ_2,...$ from $\mathcal B(H)$ to itself, $$ \lim_{n\to\infty}\|ϕ_n(g)-g\|=0, \forall g\in G \implies \lim_{n\to\infty}\|ϕ_n(a)-a\|=0, \forall a\in A. $$ We show that one can determine whether a given set G of generators is hyperrigid by examining the noncommutative Choquet boundary of the operator space spanned by $G\cup G^*$. We present a v…
For any Ritt operator $T$ acting on a noncommutative $L^p$-space, we define the notion of \textit{completely} bounded functional calculus $H^\infty(B_γ)$ where $B_γ$ is a Stolz domain. Moreover, we introduce the `column square functions' $\norm{x}_{T,c,α}=\Bnorm{\Big(\sum_{k=1}^{+\infty}k^{2α-1}|T^{k-1}(I-T)^α(x)|^2\Big)^{1/2}}_{L^p(M)}$ and the `row square functions' $\norm{x}_{T,r,α}=\Bnorm{\Big(\sum_{k=1}^{+\infty}k^{2α-1} |\Big(T^{k-1}(I-T)^α(x)\Big)^*|^2\Big)^{1/2}}_{L^p(M)}$ for any $α>0$ and any $x\in L^p(M)$. Then, we provide an example of Ritt operator which admits a completely bounde…
In previous papers, we constructed smooth (1,\infty)-summable semfinite spectral triples for graph algebras with a faithful trace, and (k,\infty)-summable semifinite spectral triples for k-graph algebras. In this paper we identify classes of graphs and k-graphs which satisfy a version of Connes' conditions for noncommutative manifolds.
For any von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$, the noncommutative Mazur map $M_{p,q}$ from $L_p(\mathcal M)$ to $L_q(\mathcal M)$ with $1\leq p,q<\infty$ is defined by $f\mapsto f|f|^{\frac {p-q}q}$. In analogy with the commutative case, we gather estimates showing that $M_{p,q}$ is $\min\{\frac pq,1\}$-Hölder on balls.
It is known that, for a positive Dunford-Schwartz operator in a noncommutative $L^p-$space, $1\leq p<\infty$ or, more generally, in a noncommutative Orlicz space with order continuous norm, the corresponding ergodic averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly. We show that these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in each noncommutative symmetric space $E$ such that $μ_t(x) \to 0$ as $t \to 0$ for every $x \in E$, where $μ_t(x)$ is a non-increasing rearrangement of $x$. In particular, these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in all noncommutative symmetric spaces with…
Continuing our project on noncommutative (stable) homotopy we construct symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categorical models for separable $C^*$-algebras $\mathtt{SC^*_\infty}$ and noncommutative spectra $\mathtt{NSp}$ using the framework of Higher Algebra due to Lurie. We study smashing (co)localizations of $\mathtt{SC^*_\infty}$ and $\mathtt{NSp}$ with respect to strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebras. We analyse the homotopy categories of the localizations of $\mathtt{SC^*_\infty}$ and give universal characterizations thereof. We construct a stable $\infty$-categorical model for bivariant connect…
We introduce `braidability' as a new symmetry for (infinite) sequences of noncommutative random variables related to representations of the braid group $B_\infty$. It provides an extension of exchangeability which is tied to the symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our key result is that braidability implies spreadability and thus conditional independence, according to the noncommutative extended de Finetti theorem (of C. Köstler). This endows the braid groups $B_n$ with a new intrinsic (quantum) probabilistic interpretation. We underline this interpretation by a braided extension of the Hewitt-Savage …
The idea of a line bundle in classical geometry is transferred to noncommutative geometry by the idea of a Morita context. From this we can construct Z and N graded algebras, the Z graded algebra being a Hopf-Galois extension. A non-degenerate Hermitian metric gives a star structure on this algebra, and an additional star operation on the line bundle gives a star operation on the N graded algebra. In this case, we can carry out the associated circle bundle and Thom constructions. Starting with a C* algebra as base, and with some positivity assumptions, the associated circle and Thom algebras a…
We study the operator space UMD property, introduced by Pisier in the context of noncommutative vector-valued Lp-spaces. It is unknown whether the property is independent of p in this setting. We prove that for 1<p,q<\infty, the Schatten q-classes Sq are OUMDp. The proof relies on properties of the Haagerup tensor product and complex interpolation. Using ultraproduct techniques, we extend this result to a large class of noncommutative Lq-spaces. Namely, we show that if M is a QWEP von Neumann algebra (i.e., a quotient of a C^*-algebra with Lance's weak expectation property) equipped with a nor…
It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative to…
We extend Beurling's invariant subspace theorem, by characterizing subspaces $K$ of the noncommutative $L^p$ spaces which are invariant with respect to Arveson's maximal subdiagonal algebras, sometimes known as noncommutative $H^\infty$. It is significant that a certain subspace, and a certain quotient, of $K$ are $L^p({\mathcal D})$-modules in the recent sense of Junge and Sherman, and therefore have a nice decomposition into cyclic submodules. We also give general inner-outer factorization formulae for elements in the noncommutative $L^p$. These facts generalize the classical ones, and shoul…
We introduce a class of unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norms with repect to $τ$ on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a faithful, normal, semifinite tracial weight $τ$. We prove a Beurling-Chen-Hadwin-Shen theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^α(\mathcal{M},τ)$, where $α$ is a unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norm with respect to $τ$, and $H^\infty$ is an extension of Arveson's noncommutative Hardy space. We use our main result to characterize the $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of a noncommutati…
Let $E=E(0,\infty)$ be a symmetric function space and $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be a symmetric operator space associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semifinite trace. Our main result identifies the class of spaces $E$ for which every derivation $δ:\mathcal{A}\to E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is necessarily inner for each $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ in the class of all semifinite von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ as those with the Levi property.
We obtain dilation results which simultaneously generalize Sz.-Nagy dilation theorem for contractions, Ando's dilation theorem for commuting contractions, Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem, and Schur's representation for the unit ball of H^\infty, in the framework of noncommutative varieties in several variables and Poisson kernels on Fock spaces. This leads to inequalities which, in the particular case of two contractions, are sharper than Ando's inequality and Agler-McCarthy's inequality in the setting of commuting contractive matrices or arbitrary commuting contractions of class C_0…
In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne extended Beurling's classical theorem to $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a finite, faithful, normal tracial state $τ$ when $1\le p\le \infty$. In this paper, using Arveson's non-commutative Hardy space $H^\infty$ in relation to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight $τ$, we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ when $0<p\leq\infty$. The proof of the main result relies on proofs …
We prove some noncommutative analogues of a theorem by Plotkin and Rudin about isometries between subspaces of Lp-spaces. Let 0<p<\infty, p not an even integer. The main result of this paper states that in the category of unital subspaces of noncommutative probability Lp-spaces, under some boundedness condition, the unital completely isometric maps come from *-isomorphisms of the underlying von Neumann algebras. Some applications are given, including to non commutative H^p spaces.
A quantized version of the Sierpinski gasket is proposed, on purely topological grounds, as a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}_\infty$ with a suitable form of self-similarity. Several properties of $\mathcal{A}_\infty$ are studied, in particular its nuclearity, the structure of ideals as well as the description of irreducible representations and extremal traces. A harmonic structure is introduced, giving rise to a self-similar Dirichlet form $\mathcal{E}$. A spectral triple is also constructed, extending one already known for the classical gasket, from which $\mathcal{E}$ can be reconstructed. Moreo…
Motivated by the philosophy that $C^*$-algebras reflect noncommutative topology, we investigate the stable homotopy theory of the (opposite) category of $C^*$-algebras. We focus on $C^*$-algebras which are non-commutative CW-complexes in the sense of [ELP]. We construct the stable $\infty$-category of noncommutative CW-spectra, which we denote by $\mathtt{NSp}$. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be the full spectral subcategory of $\mathtt{NSp}$ spanned by "noncommutative suspension spectra" of matrix algebras. Our main result is that $\mathtt{NSp}$ is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of spectral presheave…
We generalize to the setting of Arveson's maximal subdiagonal subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras, the Szegö $L^p$-distance estimate, and classical theorems of F. and M. Riesz, Gleason and Whitney, and Kolmogorov. In so doing, we are finally able to provide a complete noncommutative analog of the famous cycle of theorems characterizing the function theoretic generalizations of $H^\infty$. A sample of our other results: we prove a Kaplansky density result for a large class of these algebras, and give a necessary condition for when every completely contractive homomorphism on a unital sub…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a ($σ$-finite) von Neumann algebra associated with a normal faithful state $ϕ.$ We prove a complex interpolation result for a couple of two (quasi) Haagerup noncommutative $L_p$-spaces $L_{p_0} (\mathcal{M}, ϕ)$ and $L_{p_1} (\mathcal{M}, ϕ), 0< p_0 < p_1\leq \infty,$ which has further applications to the sandwiched $p$-Rényi divergence.
Let $1\leq p<\infty$ and let $T\colon L^p({\mathcal M})\to L^p({\mathcal N})$ be a bounded map between noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. If $T$ is bijective and separating (i.e., for any $x,y\in L^p({\mathcal M})$ such that $x^*y=xy^*=0$, we have $T(x)^*T(y)=T(x)T(y)^*=0$), we prove the existence of decompositions ${\mathcal M}={\mathcal M}_1\mathop{\oplus}\limits^\infty{\mathcal M}_2$, ${\mathcal N}={\mathcal N}_1 \mathop{\oplus}\limits^\infty{\mathcal N}_2$ and maps $T_1\colon L^p({\mathcal M}_1)\to L^p({\mathcal N}_1)$, $T_2\colon L^p({\mathcal M}_2)\to L^p({\mathcal N}_2)$, such that $T=T_1+T_2…
We give an overview on the metric aspect of noncommutative geometry, especially the metric interpretation of gauge fields via the process of "fluctuation of the metric". Connes' distance formula associates to a gauge field on a bundle P equipped with a connection H a metric. When the holonomy is trivial, this distance coincides with the horizontal distance defined by the connection. When the holonomy is non trivial, the noncommutative distance has rather surprising properties. Specifically we exhibit an elementary example on a 2-torus in which the noncommutative metric d is somehow more intere…
We extend some classical results of Cowling and Meda to the noncommutative setting. Let $(T_t)_{t>0}$ be a symmetric contraction semigroup on a noncommutative space $L_p(\mathcal{M}),$ and let the functions $ϕ$ and $ψ$ be regularly related. We prove that the semigroup $(T_t)_{t>0}$ is $ϕ$-ultracontractive, i.e. $\|T_t x\|_\infty \leq C ϕ(t)^{-1} \|x\|_1$ for all $x\in L_1(\mathcal{M})$ and $ t>0$ if and only if its infinitesimal generator $L$ has the Sobolev embedding properties: $\|ψ(L)^{-α} x\|_q \leq C'\|x\|_p$ for all $x\in L_p(\mathcal{M}),$ where $1<p<q<\infty$ and $α=\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1…
We study some topological spaces that can be considered as hyperspaces associated to noncommutative spaces. More precisely, for a NC compact space associated to a unital C*-algebra, we consider the set of closed projections of the second dual of the C*-algebra as the hyperspace of closed subsets of the NC space. We endow this hyperspace with an analog of Vietoris topology. In the case that the NC space has a quantum metric space structure in the sense of Rieffel we study the analogs of Hausdorff and infimum distances on the hyperspace. We also formulate some interesting problems about distance…
We prove that for all 1 \le p \le \infty, p not 2, the Lp spaces associated to two von Neumann algebras M,N are isometrically isomorphic if and only if M and N are Jordan *-isomorphic. This follows from a noncommutative Lp Banach-Stone theorem: a specific decomposition for surjective isometries of noncommutative Lp spaces.
Let $1\leq p \leq +\infty$. We show that the positive part of the closed unit ball of a non-commmutative $L^p$-space, as a metric space, is a complete Jordan $^*$-invariant for the underlying von Neumann algebra.
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a type 1 subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with respect to a faithful normal conditional expectation $Φ$. We consider a Riesz type factorization theorem in noncommutative $H^p$ spaces associated with $\mathfrak A$. It is shown that if $1\leq r,p,q<\infty$ such that $\frac1r=\frac1p+\frac1q$, then for any $h\in H^r$, there exist $h_p\in H^p$ and $h_q\in H^q$ such that $h=h_ph_q$. Beurling type invariant subspace theorem for noncommutative $L^p(1< p<\infty)$ space is obtained. Furthermore, we show that a $σ$-weakly closed subalgebra contain…
We construct a compactly generated and closed symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathtt{NSp'}$ and show that $\mathtt{hNSp'}^{op}$ contains the suspension stable homotopy category of separable $C^*$-algebras $\mathtt{ΣHo^{C^*}}$ constructed by Cuntz-Meyer-Rosenberg as a fully faithful triangulated subcategory. Then we construct two colocalizations of $\mathtt{NSp'}$, namely, $\mathtt{NSp'}[\mathbb{K}^{-1}]$ and $\mathtt{NSp'}[\mathcal{Z}^{-1}]$, both of which are shown to be compactly generated and closed symmetric monoidal. We prove that Kasparov $KK$-category of separable $C^*$-al…
We extend in a noncommutative setting the individual ergodic theorem of Nevo and Stein concerning measure preserving actions of free groups and averages on spheres $s_{2n}$ of even radius. Here we study state preserving actions of free groups on a von Neumann algebra $A$ and the behaviour of $(s_{2n}(x))$ for $x$ in noncommutative spaces $L^p(A)$. For the Cesàro means $\frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} s_k$ and $p = +\infty$, this problem was solved by Walker. Our approach is based on ideas of Bufetov. We prove a noncommutative version of Rota ``Alternierende Verfahren'' theorem. To this end, we int…
