In this paper we investigate quantum circle bundles from the point of view of compact quantum metric spaces. The raw input data is a circle action on a unital $C^*$-algebra together with a quantum metric of spectral geometric origin on the fixed point algebra. Under a few extra conditions on the spectral subspaces we show that the spectral geometric data on the base algebra can be lifted to the total algebra. Notably, the lifted spectral geometry is independent of the choice of frames and is permitted to interact with the total algebra via a twisted derivation. Under these conditions, it is explained how to assemble our data into a quantum metric on the total algebra in a way which unifies and generalizes a couple of results in the literature relating to crossed products by the integers and to quantum $SU(2)$. We apply our ideas to the higher Vaksman-Soibelman quantum spheres and endow them with quantum metrics arising from $q$-geometric data. In this context, the twist is enforced by the structure of the Drinfeld-Jimbo deformation arising from the Lie algebra of the special unitary group.
We transfer a large part of the circle of theorems characterizing the generalization of classical $H^\infty$ known as `weak* Dirichlet algebras', to Arveson's noncommutative setting of subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras.
Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.
We present a derivation-based Atiyah sequence for noncommutative principal bundles. Along the way we treat the problem of deciding when a given $^*$-automorphism on the quantum base space lifts to a $^*$-automorphism on the quantum total space that commutes with the underlying structure group.
Classic work of Pierce and Dauns-Hofmann shows that biregular rings are dual to simple ring bundles over Stone spaces. We extend this duality to Steinberg rings, a purely algebraic generalisation of Steinberg algebras, and ringoid bundles over ample groupoids. We base this largely on an even more general extension of Lawson's noncommutative Stone duality, specifically between Steinberg semigroups, a generalisation of Boolean inverse semigroups, and category bundles over ample groupoids.
Recently Baraglia showed how topological T-duality can be extended to apply not only to principal circle bundles, but also to non-principal circle bundles. We show that his results can also be recovered via two other methods: the homotopy-theoretic approach of Bunke and Schick, and the noncommutative geometry approach which we previously used for principal torus bundles. This work has several interesting byproducts, including a study of the K-theory of crossed products by Isom(R), the universal cover of O(2), and some interesting facts about equivariant K-theory for Z/2. In the final section o…
It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative to…
We describe how noncommutative function algebras built from noncommutative functions in the sense of \cite{K-VV2014} may be studied as subalgebras of homogeneous $C^{*}$-algebras.
We compute the curvature of the determinant line bundle on a family of Dirac operators for a noncommutative two torus. Following Quillen's original construction for Riemann surfaces and using zeta regularized determinant of Laplacians, one can endow the determinant line bundle with a natural Hermitian metric. By using an analogue of Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace, defined on Connes' algebra of classical pseudodifferential symbols for the noncommutative two torus, we compute the curvature form of the determinant line bundle by computing the second variation $δ_{w}δ_{\bar{w}}\log\det(Δ)$.
The idea of a line bundle in classical geometry is transferred to noncommutative geometry by the idea of a Morita context. From this we can construct Z and N graded algebras, the Z graded algebra being a Hopf-Galois extension. A non-degenerate Hermitian metric gives a star structure on this algebra, and an additional star operation on the line bundle gives a star operation on the N graded algebra. In this case, we can carry out the associated circle bundle and Thom constructions. Starting with a C* algebra as base, and with some positivity assumptions, the associated circle and Thom algebras a…
We provide a systematic study of a noncommutative extension of the classical Anzai skew-product for the cartesian product of two copies of the unit circle to the noncommutative 2-tori. In particular, some relevant ergodic properties are proved for these quantum dynamical systems, extending the corresponding ones enjoyed by the classical Anzai skew-product. As an application, for a uniquely ergodic Anzai skew-product $\F$ on the noncommutative $2$-torus $\ba_\a$, $\a\in\br$, we investigate the pointwise limit, $\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac1{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}ł^{-k}\F^k(x)$, for $x\in\ba_\a$ and $ł$ …
We equip the multi-pullback $C^*$-algebra $C(S^5_H)$ of a noncommutative-deformation of the 5-sphere with a free $U(1)$-action, and show that its fixed-point subalgebra is isomorphic with the $C^*$-algebra of the multi-pullback quantum complex projective plane. Our main result is the stable non-triviality of the dual tautological line bundle associated to the action. We prove it by combining Chern-Galois theory with the Milnor connecting homomorphism in $K$-theory. Using the Mayer-Vietoris six-term exact sequences and the functoriality of the Künneth formula, we also compute the $K$-groups of …
In this paper we study continuous bundles of C*-algebras which are non-commutative analogues of principal torus bundles. We show that all such bundles, although in general being very far away from being locally trivial bundles, are at least locally trivial with respect to a suitable bundle version of bivariant K-theory (denoted RKK-theory) due to Kasparov. Using earlier results of Echterhoff and Williams, we shall give a complete classification of principal non-commutative torus bundles up to equivariant Morita equivalence. We then study these bundles as topological fibrations (forgetting the …
Topological T-duality is a transformation taking a gerbe on a principal torus bundle to a gerbe on a principal dual-torus bundle. We give a new geometric construction of T-dualization, which allows the duality to be extended in following two directions. First, bundles of groups other than tori, even bundles of some nonabelian groups, can be dualized. Second, bundles whose duals are families of noncommutative groups (in the sense of noncommutative geometry) can be treated, though in this case the base space of the bundles is best viewed as a topological stack. Some methods developed for the con…
This work provides a generalization of the Gelfand duality to the context of noncommutative locally $C^*$ algebras. Using a reformulation of a theorem proven by Dauns and Hofmann in the 60's we show that every locally $C^*$ algebra can be realized as the algebra of continuous sections of a $C^*$ bundle over a compactly generated topological space. This result is used then to show that on certain special cases locally $C^*$ algebras can be used to define certain sheaves of locally $C^*$ algebras that, inspired by the analogy with commutative geometry, we call noncommutative spaces. The last sec…
Given a free action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a unital C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and a spectral triple on the corresponding fixed point algebra $\mathcal{A}^G$, we present a systematic and in-depth construction of a spectral triple on $\mathcal{A}$ that is build upon the geometry of $\mathcal{A}^G$ and $G$. We compare our construction with a selection of established examples.
We investigate a quantum twistor bundle constructed as a $U(1)$-quotient of the quantum instanton bundle of Bonechi, Ciccoli and Tarlini. It is an example of a noncommutative bundle fulfilling conditions of the purely algebraic framework proposed by Brzeziński and Szymański. We provide a detailed description of the corresponding $C^*$-algebra of `continuous functions' on its noncommutative total space.
We use noncommutative topology to study T-duality for principal torus bundles with H-flux. We characterize precisely when there is a "classical" T-dual, i.e., a dual bundle with dual H-flux, and when the T-dual must be "non-classical," that is, a continuous field of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted $K$-theories, required for matching of D-brane charges, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced in the non-classical case by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology. An important part…
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
We recast basic topological concepts underlying differential geometry using the language and tools of noncommutative geometry. This way we characterize principal (free and proper) actions by a density condition in (multiplier) C*-algebras. We introduce the concept of piecewise triviality to adapt the standard notion of local triviality to fibre products of C*-algebras. In the context of principal actions, we study in detail an example of a non-proper free action with continuous translation map, and examples of compact principal bundles which are piecewise trivial but not locally trivial, and n…
We recall the emergence of a generalized gauge theory from a noncommutative Riemannian spin manifold, viz. a real spectral triple $(A,H,D;J)$. This includes a gauge group determined by the unitaries in the $*$-algebra $A$ and gauge fields arising from a so-called perturbation semigroup which is associated to $A$. Our main new result is the interpretation of this generalized gauge theory in terms of an upper semi-continuous $C^*$-bundle on a (Hausdorff) base space $X$. The gauge group acts by vertical automorphisms on this $C^*$-bundle and can (under some mild conditions) be identified with the…
We present a new, general approach to gauge theory on principal $G$-spectral triples, where $G$ is a compact connected Lie group. We introduce a notion of vertical Riemannian geometry for $G$-$C^\ast$-algebras and prove that the resulting noncommutative orbitwise family of Kostant's cubic Dirac operators defines a natural unbounded $KK^G$-cycle in the case of a principal $G$-action. Then, we introduce a notion of principal $G$-spectral triple and prove, in particular, that any such spectral triple admits a canonical factorisation in unbounded $KK^G$-theory with respect to such a cycle: up to a…
We introduce and analyse a new type of quantum 2-spheres. Then we apply index theory for noncommutative line bundles over these spheres to conclude that quantum lens spaces are non-crossed-product examples of principal extensions of C*-algebras.
Noncommutative Kähler structures were recently introduced by the second author as a framework for studying noncommutative Kähler geometry on quantum homogeneous spaces. It was subsequently observed that the notion of a positive vector bundle directly generalises to this setting, as does the Kodaira vanishing theorem. In this paper, by restricting to covariant Kähler structures of irreducible type (those having an irreducible space of holomorphic one-forms) we provide simple cohomological criteria for positivity, offering a means to avoid explicit curvature calculations. These general results a…
Using the Weil-Brezin-Zak transform of solid state physics, we describe line bundles over elliptic curves in terms of Weyl operators. We then discuss the connection with finitely-generated projective modules over the algebra $A_θ$ of the noncommutative torus. We show that such $A_θ$-modules have a natural interpretation as Moyal deformations of vector bundles over an elliptic curve $E_τ$, under the condition that the deformation parameter $θ$ and the modular parameter $τ$ satisfy a non-trivial relation.
We give an overview on the metric aspect of noncommutative geometry, especially the metric interpretation of gauge fields via the process of "fluctuation of the metric". Connes' distance formula associates to a gauge field on a bundle P equipped with a connection H a metric. When the holonomy is trivial, this distance coincides with the horizontal distance defined by the connection. When the holonomy is non trivial, the noncommutative distance has rather surprising properties. Specifically we exhibit an elementary example on a 2-torus in which the noncommutative metric d is somehow more intere…
