We extend Beurling's invariant subspace theorem, by characterizing subspaces $K$ of the noncommutative $L^p$ spaces which are invariant with respect to Arveson's maximal subdiagonal algebras, sometimes known as noncommutative $H^\infty$. It is significant that a certain subspace, and a certain quotient, of $K$ are $L^p({\mathcal D})$-modules in the recent sense of Junge and Sherman, and therefore have a nice decomposition into cyclic submodules. We also give general inner-outer factorization formulae for elements in the noncommutative $L^p$. These facts generalize the classical ones, and should be useful in the future development of noncommutative $H^p$ theory. In addition, these results characterize maximal subdiagonal algebras.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra, equipped with a normal faithful state $φ$, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be maximal subdiagonal subalgebra of $\mathcal{M}$ and $1\le p<\8$. We prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne type theorem for $\mathcal{A}$-invariant subspaces of Haagerup noncommutative $L^p(\mathcal{M})$ and give a characterization of outer operators in Haagerup noncommutative $H^{p}$-spaces associated with $\mathcal{A}$.
In 2015, Yanni Chen, Don Hadwin and Junhao Shen proved a noncommutative version of Beurling's theorems for a continuous unitarily invariant norm $% α$ on a tracial von Neumann algebra $\left( \mathcal{M},τ\right) $ where $α$ is $\left\Vert \cdot \right\Vert _{1}$-dominating with respect to $τ$. In the paper, we first define a class of norms $% N_{Δ}\left( \mathcal{M},τ\right) $ on $\mathcal{M}$, called determinant, normalized, unitarily invariant continuous norms on $\mathcal{M}$. If $α\in N_{Δ}\left( \mathcal{M},τ\right) $, then there exists a faithful normal tracial state $ρ$ on $\mathcal{M}…
We introduce a class of unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norms with repect to $τ$ on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a faithful, normal, semifinite tracial weight $τ$. We prove a Beurling-Chen-Hadwin-Shen theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^α(\mathcal{M},τ)$, where $α$ is a unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norm with respect to $τ$, and $H^\infty$ is an extension of Arveson's noncommutative Hardy space. We use our main result to characterize the $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of a noncommutati…
We establish a version of the Beurling-Pollard theorem for operator synthesis and apply it to derive some results on linear operator equations and to prove a Beurling-Pollard type theorem for Varopoulos tensor algebras. Additionally we establish a Beurling-Pollard theorem for weighted Fourier algebras and use it to obtain ascent estimates for operators that are functions of generalized scalar operators.
Suppose $α$ is a rotationally symmetric norm on $L^{\infty}\left(\mathbb{T}\right) $ and $β$ is a "nice" norm on $L^{\infty}\left(Ω,μ\right) $ where $μ$ is a $σ$-finite measure on $Ω$. We prove a version of Beurling's invariant subspace theorem for the space $L^β\left(μ,H^α\right) .$ Our proof uses the recent version of Beurling's theorem on $H^α\left(\mathbb{T}\right) $ proved by the first author and measurable cross-section techniques. Our result significantly extends a result of H. Rezaei, S. Talebzadeh, and D. Y. Shin.
In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne extended Beurling's classical theorem to $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a finite, faithful, normal tracial state $τ$ when $1\le p\le \infty$. In this paper, using Arveson's non-commutative Hardy space $H^\infty$ in relation to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight $τ$, we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ when $0<p\leq\infty$. The proof of the main result relies on proofs …
In 2016 and 2017, Haihui Fan, Don Hadwin and Wenjing Liu proved a commutative and noncommutative version of Beurling's theorems for a continuous unitarily invariant norm $α$ on $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},μ)$ and tracial finite von Neumann algebras $\left( \mathcal{M},τ\right) $, respectively. In the paper, we study unitarily $\|\|_{1}$-dominating invariant norms $α$ on finite von Neumann algebras. First we get a Burling theorem in commutative von Neumann algebras by defining $H^α(\mathbb{T},μ)=\overline {H^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},μ)}^{σ(L^α\left( \mathbb{T} \right),\mathcal{L}^{α^{'}}\left( \mathbb{T}…
Yanni Chen extended the classical Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager Theorem for Hardy spaces on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ defined in terms of continuous gauge norms on $L^{\infty}$ that dominate $\Vert\cdot\Vert_{1}$. We extend Chen's result to a much larger class of continuous gauge norms. A key ingredient is our result that if $α$ is a continuous normalized gauge norm on $L^{\infty}$, then there is a probability measure $λ$, mutually absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{T}$, such that $α\geq c\Vert\cdot\Vert_{1,λ}$ for some $0<c\leq1.$
We introduce two kinds of quasi-inner functions. Since every rationally invariant subspace for a shift operator $S_K$ on a vector-valued Hardy space $H^{2}(Ω,K)$ is generated by a quasi-inner function, we also provide relationships of quasi-inner functions by comparing rationally invariant subspaces generated by them. Furthermore, we discuss fundamental properties of quasi-inner functions, and quasi-inner divisors.
We extend the de Branges-Beurling theorem characterizing the shift-invariant spaces boundedly contained in the Hardy space of square-summable power series to the full Fock space over $\mathbb{C} ^d$. Here, the full Fock space is identified as the \emph{Non-commutative (NC) Hardy Space} of square-summable Taylor series in several non-commuting variables. We then proceed to study lattice operations on NC kernels and operator-valued multipliers between vector-valued Fock spaces. In particular, we demonstrate that the operator-valued Fock space multipliers with common coefficient range space form …
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a maximal subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. If every right invariant subspace of $\mathfrak A$ in the non-commutative Hardy space $H^2$ is of Beurling type, then we say $\mathfrak A$ to be type 1. We determine generators of these algebras and consider a Riesz type factorization theorem for the non-commutative $H^1$ space. We show that the right analytic Toeplitz algebra on the non-commutative Hardy space $H^p$ associated with a type 1 subdiagonal algebra with multiplicity 1 is hereditary reflexive.
In 1967, Arveson invented a non-commutative generalization of classical $H^{\infty},$ known as finite maximal subdiagonal subalgebras, for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with a faithful normal tracial state $τ$. In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne proved a version of Beurling's theorem on $H^\infty$-right invariant subspaces in a non-commutative $L^{p}(\mathcal M,τ)$ space for $1\le p\le \infty$. In the present paper, we define and study a class of norms ${\mathcal{N}}_{c}(\mathcal M, τ)$ on $\mathcal{M},$ called normalized, unitarily invariant, $\Vert \cdot \Vert_{1}$-dominating, cont…
In this paper we introduce and study the Euler characteristic associated with algebraic modules generated by arbitrary elements of certain noncommutative polyballs. We provide several asymptotic formulas and prove some of its basic properties. We show that the Euler characteristic is a complete unitary invariant for the finite rank Beurling type invariant subspaces of the tensor product of full Fock spaces $F^2(H_{n_1})\otimes \cdots \otimes F^2(H_{n_k})$, and prove that its range coincides with the interval $[0,\infty)$. We obtain an analogue of Arveson's version of the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern the…
We point out a link between the theorem of Balian and Low on the non-existence of well-localized Gabor-Riesz bases and a constant curvature connection on projective modules over noncommutative tori.
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a type 1 subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with respect to a faithful normal conditional expectation $Φ$. We consider a Riesz type factorization theorem in noncommutative $H^p$ spaces associated with $\mathfrak A$. It is shown that if $1\leq r,p,q<\infty$ such that $\frac1r=\frac1p+\frac1q$, then for any $h\in H^r$, there exist $h_p\in H^p$ and $h_q\in H^q$ such that $h=h_ph_q$. Beurling type invariant subspace theorem for noncommutative $L^p(1< p<\infty)$ space is obtained. Furthermore, we show that a $σ$-weakly closed subalgebra contain…
Let $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ denote the Hardy space over the polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$, $n \geq 2$. A closed subspace $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is called Beurling quotient module if there exists an inner function $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $\mathcal{Q} = H^2(\mathbb{D}^n) /θH^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. We present a complete characterization of Beurling quotient modules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$: Let $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ be a closed subspace, and let $C_{z_i} = P_{\mathcal{Q}} M_{z_i}|_{\mathcal{Q}}$, $i=1, \ldots, n$. Then $\mathcal{Q}$ is a Beurling quotient mod…
We show that ergodic flows in noncommutative fully symmetric spaces (associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra) generated by continuous semigroups of positive Dunford-Schwartz operators and modulated by bounded Besicovitch almost periodic functions converge almost uniformly. The corresponding local ergodic theorem is also discussed.
It is shown that the bona fide generalization of the Vitali-Hahn-Saks Theorem to von Neumann algebras is possible if, and only if, the algebra is finite. This settles the problem on the noncommutative Vitali-Hahn-Saks Theorem completely and provides new means of characterizing finite von Neumann algebras.
We show that a Beurling type theory of invariant subspaces of noncommutative $H^2$ spaces holds true in the setting of subdiagonal subalgebras of $σ$-finite von Neumann algebras. This extends earlier work of Blecher and Labuschagne for finite algebras, and complements more recent contributions in this regard by Bekjan, and Chen, Hadwin and Shen in the finite setting, and Sager in the semifinite setting. We then also introduce the notion of an analytically conditioned algebra, and go on to show that in the class of analytically conditioned algebras this Beurling type theory is part of a list of…
We prove a noncommutative version of the John-Nirenberg theorem for nontracial filtrations of von Neumann algebras. As an application, we obtain an analogue of the classical large deviation inequality for elements of the associated $BMO$ space.
We show that a reflexive subspace of the predual of a von Neumann algebra embeds into a noncommutative Lp space for some p>1. This is a noncommutative version of Rosenthal's result for commutative Lp spaces. Similarly for 1 < q < 2, an infinite dimensional subspace X of a noncommutative Lq space either contains lq or embeds in Lp for some q < p < 2. The novelty in the noncommutative setting is a double sided change of density.
In this paper, we extend the Banach-Stone theorem to the non commutative case, i.e, we prove that the structure of the liminal $C^{*}$-algebras $\cal A$ determines the topology of its primitive ideal space.
In [11], employing the technique of noncommutative interpolation, a maximal ergodic theorem in noncommutative Lp-spaces, 1 < p < infinity, was established and, among other things, corresponding maximal ergodic inequalities and individual ergodic theorems were derived. In this article, we derive maximal ergodic inequalities in noncommutative Lp-spaces directly from [25] and apply them to prove corresponding individual and Besicovitch weighted ergodic theorems. Then we extend these results to noncommutative fully symmetric Banach spaces with Fatou property and non-trivial Boyd indices, in partic…
We first use properties of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant on $L^p(M)$, for a finite von Neumann algebra $M$, to give several useful variants of the noncommutative Szegö theorem for $L^p(M)$, including the one usually attributed to Kolmogorov and Krein. As an application, we solve the longstanding open problem concerning the noncommutative generalization, to Arveson's noncommutative $H^p$ spaces, of the famous `outer factorization' of functions $f$ with $\log |f|$ integrable. Using the Fuglede-Kadison determinant, we also generalize many other classical results concerning outer functions.
It is known that, for a positive Dunford-Schwartz operator in a noncommutative $L^p-$space, $1\leq p<\infty$ or, more generally, in a noncommutative Orlicz space with order continuous norm, the corresponding ergodic averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly. We show that these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in each noncommutative symmetric space $E$ such that $μ_t(x) \to 0$ as $t \to 0$ for every $x \in E$, where $μ_t(x)$ is a non-increasing rearrangement of $x$. In particular, these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in all noncommutative symmetric spaces with…
In this paper, we extend the Banach-Stone theorem to the non commutative case, i.e, we give a partial answere to the question 2.1 of [13], and we prove that the structure of the postliminal C*-algebras A determines the topology of its primitive ideals space.
Let $\cX$ be the unital *-algebra generated by the unilateral shift operator. It is shown that for any nonnegative operator $X\in \cX$ there is an element $Y\in \cX$ such that $X=Y^*Y$.
We present a new, elementary proof of Boyd's interpolation theorem. Our approach naturally yields a noncommutative version of this result and even allows for the interpolation of certain operators on l^1-valued noncommutative symmetric spaces. By duality we may interpolate several well-known noncommutative maximal inequalities. In particular we obtain a version of Doob's maximal inequality and the dual Doob inequality for noncommutative symmetric spaces. We apply our results to prove the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy and Burkholder-Rosenthal inequalities for noncommutative martingales in these spaces…
Given a function $f: (a,b) \rightarrow \mathbb{R},$ Löwner's theorem states $f$ is monotone when extended to self-adjoint matrices via the functional calculus, if and only if $f$ extends to a self-map of the complex upper half plane. In recent years, several generalizations of Löwner's theorem have been proven in several variables. We use the relaxed Agler, McCarthy and Young theorem on locally matrix monotone functions in several commuting variables to generalize results in the noncommutative case. Specifically, we show that a real free function defined over an operator system must analytical…
This paper is devoted to the study of various maximal ergodic theorems in noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. In particular, we prove the noncommutative analogue of the classical Dunford-Schwartz maximal ergodic inequality for positive contractions on $L_p$ and the analogue of Stein's maximal inequality for symmetric positive contractions. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems. We apply these results to a family of natural examples which frequently appear in theory of von Neumann algebras and in quantum probability.
We prove an implicit function theorem and an inverse function theorem for free noncommutative functions over operator spaces and on the set of nilpotent matrices. We apply these results to study dependence of the solution of the initial value problem for ODEs in noncommutative spaces on the initial data and to extremal problems with noncommutative constraints.
For a noncommutative Orlicz space associated with a semifnite von Neumann algebra, a faithful normal semifnite trace and an Orlicz function satisfying $(δ_2,Δ_2)-$condition, an individual ergodic theorem is proved.
We prove maximal ergodic theorems for spherical averages on the Heisenberg groups acting on $L_p$ spaces over measure spaces not necessarily commutative, that is, on noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. The scale of $p$ is optimal in the reduced Heisenberg group case. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems and differential theorems in the noncommutative setting. The results can be regarded as noncommutative analogues of Nevo-Thangavelu's ergodic theorems. The approach of proof involves recent developments in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces and in noncommutative harmonic analysis, in …
The present paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we prove a noncommutative analogue of the Riesz(-Markov-Kakutani) theorem on representation of functionals on an algebra of continuous functions by regular measures on the underlying space. In the second part, using this result, we prove a weak version of Burnside type theorem for twisted conjugacy for arbitrary discrete groups.
We discuss the Fubini formula in Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We present a sufficient condition on spectral triples for which a Fubini formula holds true. The condition is natural and related to heat semigroup asymptotics. We provide examples of spectral triples for which the Fubini formula fails.
We extend in a noncommutative setting the individual ergodic theorem of Nevo and Stein concerning measure preserving actions of free groups and averages on spheres $s_{2n}$ of even radius. Here we study state preserving actions of free groups on a von Neumann algebra $A$ and the behaviour of $(s_{2n}(x))$ for $x$ in noncommutative spaces $L^p(A)$. For the Cesàro means $\frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} s_k$ and $p = +\infty$, this problem was solved by Walker. Our approach is based on ideas of Bufetov. We prove a noncommutative version of Rota ``Alternierende Verfahren'' theorem. To this end, we int…
This article is devoted to studying individual ergodic theorems for subsequential weighted ergodic averages on the noncommutative Lp-spaces associated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra M. In particular, we establish the convergence of these averages along sequences with density one and certain types of block sequences with positive lower density, and we extend known results along uniform sequences in the sense of Brunel and Keane.
Inspired by Lehner's results on exchangeability systems we define `weak conditional freeness' and `conditional freeness' for stationary processes in an operator algebraic framework of noncommutative probability. We show that these two properties are equivalent and thus the process embeds into a von Neumann algebraic amalgamated free product over the fixed point algebra of the stationary process.
We explore the relationship between two noncommutative generalizations of the classical Nevanlinna-Pick theorem: one proved by Constantinescu and Johnson in 2003 and the other proved by Muhly and Solel in 2004. To make the comparison, we generalize Constantinescu and Johnson's theorem to the context of W*-correspondences and Hardy algebras. After formulating the so-called displacement equation in this context, we are able to follow Constantinescu and Johnson's line of reasoning in our proof. Though our result is similar in appearance to Muhly and Solel's, closer inspection reveals differences.…
We show how to define Riemannian metrics and connections on a noncommutative torus in such a way that an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem on the existence and uniqueness of a Riemannian connection holds. The major novelty is that we need to use two different notions of noncommutative vector field. Levi-Civita's theorem makes it possible to define Riemannian curvature using the usual formulas.
The extended de Finetti theorem characterizes exchangeable infinite random sequences as conditionally i.i.d. and shows that the apparently weaker distributional symmetry of spreadability is equivalent to exchangeability. Our main result is a noncommutative version of this theorem. In contrast to the classical result of Ryll-Nadzewski, exchangeability turns out to be stronger than spreadability for infinite noncommutative random sequences. Out of our investigations emerges noncommutative conditional independence in terms of a von Neumann algebraic structure closely related to Popa's notion of c…
We show the non-positivity of the Einstein-Hilbert action for conformal flat Riemannian metrics. The action vanishes only when the metric is constant flat. This recovers an earlier result of Fathizadeh-Khalkhali in the setting of spectral triples on noncommutative four-torus. Furthermore, computations of the gradient flow and the scalar curvature of this space based on modular operator are given. We also show the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for a parametrized class of non-diagonal metrics on noncommutative two-torus.
In this paper we prove a version of Connes' trace theorem for noncommutative tori of any dimension~$n\geq 2$. This allows us to recover and improve earlier versions of this result in dimension $n=2$ and $n=4$ by Fathizadeh-Khalkhali. We also recover the Connes integration formula for flat noncommutative tori of McDonald-Sukochev-Zanin. As a further application we prove a curved version of this integration formula in terms of the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined by an arbitrary Riemannian metric. For the class of so-called self-compatible Riemannian metrics (including the conformally flat metr…
The classical Julia-Wolff-Carath{é}odory Theorem characterizes the behaviour of the derivative of an analytic self-map of a unit disc or of a half-plane of the complex plane at certain boundary points. We prove a version of this result that applies to noncommutative self-maps of noncommutative half-planes in von Neumann algebras at points of the distinguished boundary of the domain. Our result, somehow surprisingly, relies almost entirely on simple geometric properties of noncommutative half-planes, which are quite similar to certain geometric properties of classical hyperbolic spaces.
In this article, we obtain a version of the noncommutative Banach Principle suitable to prove Wiener-Wintner type results for weights in W1-space. This is used to obtain noncommutative Wiener-Wintner type ergodic theorems for various types of weights for certain types of positive Dunford-Schwartz operators. We also study the b.a.u. (a.u.) convergence of some subsequential averages and moving averages of such operators
We show that the classical de Finetti theorem has a canonical noncommutative counterpart if we strengthen `exchangeability' (i.e., invariance of the joint distribution of the random variables under the action of the permutation group) to invariance under the action of the quantum permutation group. More precisely, for an infinite sequence of noncommutative random variables, we prove that invariance of their joint distribution under quantum permutations is equivalent to the fact that the random variables are identically distributed and free with respect to the conditional expectation onto their…
We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.
After a review of the results in arXiv:1203.3184 [math-ph] about Pythagorean inequalities for products of spectral triples, I will present some new results and discuss classes of spectral triples and states for which equality holds.
