We define a nonnegative integer $\la(L,L_0;ϕ)$ for a pair of diffeomorphic closed Lagrangian surfaces $L_0,L$ embedded in a symplectic 4-manifold $(M,\w)$ and a diffeomorphism $ϕ\in\Diff^+(M)$ satisfying $ϕ(L_0)=L$. We prove that if there exists $ϕ\in\Diff^+_o(M)$ with $ϕ(L_0)=L$ and $\la(L,L_0;ϕ)=0$, then $L_0,L$ are symplectomorphic. We also define a second invariant $n(L_1,L_0;[L_t])=n(L_1,L_0,[ϕ_t])$ for a smooth isotopy $L_t=ϕ_t(L_0)$ between two Lagrangian surfaces $L_0$ and $L_1$ with $\la (L_1,L_0;ϕ_1)=0$, which serves as an obstruction of deforming $L_t$ to a Lagrangian isotopy with $L_0,L_1$ preserved.
We construct distinguished elements in the embedded contact homology (and monopole Floer homology) of a 3-torus, associated with Lagrangian tori in symplectic 4-manifolds and their isotopy classes. They turn out not to be new invariants, instead they repackage the Gromov (and Seiberg-Witten) invariants of various torus surgeries. We then recover a result of Morgan-Mrowka-Szabó on product formulas for the Seiberg-Witten invariants along 3-tori.
We construct $\sorth{p} \times \sorth{q}$-invariant special Lagrangian (SL) cones in $\C^{p+q}$. These SL cones are natural higher-dimensional analogues of the $\sorth{2}$-invariant SL cones constructed previously by MH and used in our gluing constructions of higher genus SL cones in $\C^{3}$. We study in detail the geometry of these $\sorth{p}\times \sorth{q}$-invariant SL cones, in preparation for their application to our higher dimensional special Legendrian gluing constructions. In particular the symmetries of these cones and their asymptotics near the spherical limit are analysed. All $\s…
We extend parts of the Lagrangian spectral invariants package recently developed by Leclercq and Zapolsky to the theory of Lagrangian cobordism developed by Biran and Cornea. This yields a nondegenerate Lagrangian "spectral metric" which bounds the Lagrangian "cobordism metric" (recently introduced by Cornea and Shelukhin) from below. It also yields a new numerical Lagrangian cobordism invariant as well as new ways of computing certain asymptotic Lagrangian spectral invariants explicitly.
Lagrangian spheres in the symplectic Del Pezzo surfaces arising as blow-ups of the complex projective plane in 4 or fewer points are classified up to Lagrangian isotopy. Unlike the case of the 5-point blow-up, there is no Lagrangian knotting.
We show that the Clifford torus and the totally geodesic real projective plane RP^2 in the complex projective plane CP^2 are the unique Hamiltonian stable minimal Lagrangian compact surfaces of CP^2 with genus less than or equal to 4, when the surface is orientable, and with Euler characteristic greater than or equal to -1, when the surface is nonorientable. Also we characterize RP^2 in CP^2 as the least possible index minimal Lagrangian compact nonorientable surface of CP^2.
Let $(N,g_{0})$ be a Kahler-Einstein surface with the first Chern class negative and assume that there exists a branched Lagrangian minimal surfaces with respect to the metric $g_{0}$. We show that when the Kahler-Einstein metric is changed in the same component (i.e. the complex structure is changed), the Lagrangian minimal surface can be deformed accordingly. To get the result, we first obtain a theorem on the deformation of the branched minimal surfaces in a complete Riemannian $n$-manifold and also generalize a result of J. Chen and G. Tian on the limit of adjunction numbers.
We considered a surgery, called Lagrangian attaching disk surgery, that can be applied to a Lagrangian surface L at the presence of a Lagrangian attaching disk D, to obtain a new Lagrangian surface L' which is always smoothly isotopic to L. We showed that this type of surgery includes all even generalized Dehn twists as constructed by Paul Seidel. We also constructed a new symplectic invariant, called y-index, for orientable closed Lagrangian surfaces immersed in a parallelizable symplectic 4-manifold W. With y-index we proved that L and L' are not Hamiltonian isotopic. We also obtained new ex…
We introduce new pseudo-metrics on spaces of Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ by considering areas associated to projecting Lagrangian cobordisms in $\mathbb{C} \times M$ to the "time-energy plane" $\mathbb{C}$. We investigate the non-degeneracy properties of these pseudo-metrics, reflecting the rigidity and flexibility aspects of Lagrangian cobordisms.
We study two related invariants of Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds. For a Lagrangian torus these invariants are functions on the first cohomology of the torus. The first invariant is of topological nature and is related to the study of Lagrangian isotopies with a given Lagrangian flux. More specifically, it measures the length of straight paths in the first cohomology that can be realized as the Lagrangian flux of a Lagrangian isotopy. The second invariant is of analytical nature and comes from symplectic function theory. It is defined for Lagrangian submanifolds admitting fibr…
We study Lagrangian cobordisms with the tools provided by Lagrangian quantum homology. In particular, we develop the theory for the setting of Lagrangian cobordisms or Lagrangians with cylindrical ends in a Lefschetz fibration, and put the different versions of the quantum homology groups into relation by a long exact sequence. We prove various practical relations of maps in this long exact sequence and we extract invariants that generalize the notion of discriminants to Lagrangian cobordisms in Lefschetz fibrations. We prove results on the relation of the discriminants of the ends of a cobord…
We construct graph selectors for compact exact Lagrangians in the cotangent bundle of an orientable, closed manifold. The construction combines Lagrangian spectral invariants developed by Oh and results by Abouzaid about the Fukaya category of a cotangent bundle. We also introduce the notion of Lipschitz-exact Lagrangians and prove that these admit an appropriate generalization of graph selector. We then, following Bernard-Oliveira dos Santos, use these results to give a new characterization of the Aubry and Mane sets of a Tonelli Hamiltonian and to generalize a result of Arnaud on Lagrangians…
Since spectral invariants were introduced in cotangent bundles via generating functions by Viterbo in the seminal paper "Symplectic topology as the geometry of generating functions," they have been defined in various contexts, mainly via Floer homology theories, and then used in a great variety of applications. In this paper we extend their definition to monotone Lagrangians, which is so far the most general case for which a "classical" Floer theory has been developed. Then, we gather and prove the properties satisfied by these invariants, and which are crucial for their applications. Finally,…
Given a monotone Lagrangian submanifold invariant under a loop of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, we compute a piece of the closed-open string map into the Hochschild cohomology of the Lagrangian which captures the homology class of the loop's orbit. Our applications include split-generation and non-formality results for real Lagrangians in projective spaces and other toric varieties; a particularly basic example is that the equatorial circle on the 2-sphere carries a non-formal Fukaya A-infinity algebra in characteristic two.
We show that the EH class and the LOSS invariant of Legendrian knots in contact 3-manifolds are functorial under regular Lagrangian concordances in Weinstein cobordisms. This gives computable obstructions to the existence of regular Lagrangian concordances.
In a pair of papers, we construct invariants for smooth four-manifolds equipped with `broken fibrations' - the singular Lefschetz fibrations of Auroux, Donaldson and Katzarkov - generalising the Donaldson-Smith invariants for Lefschetz fibrations. The `Lagrangian matching invariants' are designed to be comparable with the Seiberg-Witten invariants of the underlying four-manifold. They fit into a field theory which assigns Floer homology groups to fibred 3-manifolds. The invariants are derived from moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic sections of relative Hilbert schemes of points on the fibres,…
Using Morse-Bott techniques adapted to the gauge-theoretic setting, we show that the limiting boundary values of the space of finite energy monopoles on a connected 3-manifold with at least two cylindrical ends provides an immersed Lagrangian submanifold of the vortex moduli space at infinity. By studying the signed intersections of such Lagrangians, we supply the analytic details of Donaldson's TQFT construction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 3-manifold.
The main theorem of this paper asserts that the inclusion of the space of projective Lagrangian planes into the space of Lagrangian submanifolds of complex projective space induces an injective homomorphism of fundamental groups. We introduce three invariants of exact loops of Lagrangian submanifolds that are modelled on invariants introduced by Polterovich for loops of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. One of these is the minimal Hofer length in a given Hamiltonian isotopy class. We determine the exact values of these invariants for loops of projective Lagrangian planes. The proof uses the Grom…
This paper surveys some results by the author and collaborators on the existence of invariant Lagrangian graphs for Tonelli Hamiltonian systems. The presentation is based on an invited talk by the author at XIX Congresso Unione Matematica Italiana (Bologna, 12-17 Sept. 2011).
We study certain types of piecewise smooth Lagrangian fibrations of smooth symplectic manifolds, which we call stitched Lagrangian fibrations. We extend the classical theory of action-angle coordinates to these fibrations by encoding the information on the non-smoothness into certain invariants consisting, roughly, of a sequence of closed 1-forms on a torus. The main motivation for this work is given by the piecewise smooth Lagrangian fibrations previously constructed by the authors (in Some piece-wise smooth Lagrangian fibrations, http://seminariomatematico.dm.unito.it/rendiconti/63-3.html), …
We define an simple invariant of an embedded nullhomologous Lagrangian torus and use this invariant to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have infinitely many pairwise symplectically inequivalent nullhomologous Lagrangian tori. We further show that for a large class of examples that lambda(T) is actually a C-infinity invariant. In addition, this invariant is used to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have nontrivial homology classes which are represented by infinitely many pairwise inequivalent Lagrangian tori, a result first proved by S Vidussi for the homotopy K3-surface obtained from …
We prove that the LOSS and GRID invariants of Legendrian links in knot Floer homology behave in certain functorial ways with respect to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of the standard contact structure on $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our results give new, computable, and effective obstructions to the existence of such cobordisms.
In this paper we construct and classify Lagrangian T^3-fibrations on non compact symplectic manifolds with singular fibres of prescribed topological type. This contributes to the understanding of the structure of the singular fibres that may appear on a mirror pair of T^3-fibred Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
We define and investigate spectral invariants for Floer homology $HF(H,U:M)$ of an open subset $U\subset M$ in $T^*M$, defined by Kasturirangan and Oh as a direct limit of Floer homologies of approximations. We define a module structure product on $HF(H,U:M)$ and prove the triangle inequality for invariants with respect to this product. We also prove the continuity of these invariants and compare them with spectral invariants for periodic orbits case in $T^*M$.
We prove several results on symplectic varieties with a Hamiltonian action of a reductive group having invariant Lagrangian subvarieties. Our main result states that the images of the moment maps of a Hamiltonian variety and of the cotangent bundle over an invariant Lagrangian subvariety coincide. This implies that the complexity and rank of the Lagrangian subvariety are equal to the half of the corank and to the defect of the Hamiltonian variety, respectively. This result generalizes a theorem of Panyushev on the complexity and rank of a conormal bundle. A simple elementary proof of this theo…
Entov and Polterovich considered the concept of heaviness and superheaviness by the Oh-Schwarz spectral invariants. The Oh-Schwarz spectral invariants are defined in terms of the Hamiltonian Floer theory. In this paper, we define heaviness and superheaviness by spectral invariants defined in terms of the Lagrangian Floer theory and provide their applications. As one of them, we define a relative symplectic capacity which measures the existence of Hamiltonian chord between two disjoint Lagrangian submanifolds and provide an upper bound of it in a special case. We also provide applications to no…
We study Lagrangian cobordism groups of oriented surfaces of genus greater than two. We compute the immersed oriented Lagrangian cobordism group of these surfaces. We show that a variant of this group, with relations given by unobstructed immersed Lagrangian cobordisms computes the Grothendieck group of the derived Fukaya category. The proof relies on an argument of Abouzaid.
We show that all Lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle of a Riemann surface which are homotopic to the zero section must be smoothly isotopic to the zero section.
In the second of a pair of papers, we complete the construction of Seiberg-Witten-like invariants for smooth four-manifolds equipped with broken fibrations, prove an index formula, and compute some examples.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold compact or convex at infinity. Consider a closed Lagrangian submanifold $L$ such that $ω|_{π_2(M,L)}=0$ and $μ|_{π_2(M,L)}=0$, where $μ$ is the Maslov index. Given any Lagrangian submanifold $L'$, Hamiltonian isotopic to $L$, we define Lagrangian spectral invariants associated to the non zero homology classes of $L$, depending on $L$ and $L'$. We show that they naturally generalize the Hamiltonian spectral invariants introduced by Oh and Schwarz, and that they are the homological counterparts of higher order invariants, which we also introduce here, via spe…
We show that a quasipositive surface with disconnected boundary induces a map between the knot Floer homology groups of its boundary components preserving the transverse invariant. As an application, we show that this invariant can be used to obstruct decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms of arbitrary genus within Weinstein cobordisms. The construction of our maps rely on the comultiplicativity of the transverse invariant. Along the way, we also recover various naturality statements for the invariant under contact +1 surgery.
We define a new family of open Gromov-Witten type invariants based on intersection theory on the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves of arbitrary genus with boundary in a Lagrangian submanifold. We assume the Lagrangian submanifold arises as the fixed points of an anti-symplectic involution and has dimension 2 or 3. In the strongly semi-positive genus 0 case, the new invariants coincide with Welschinger's invariant counts of real pseudoholomorphic curves. Furthermore, we calculate the new invariant for the real quintic threefold in genus 0 and degree 1 to be 30.
In this paper we classify Lagrangian spheres in $A_n$-surface singularities up to Hamiltonian isotopy. Combining with a result of A. Ritter, this yields a complete classification of exact Lagrangians in $A_n$-surface singularities.
This paper has crucial flaws in the construction of measure in the proof of Theorem 11.1 in Part II and so withdrawn. Part I is independent of Part II whose content is salient has independent interest.
In this paper, we construct a Lagrangian submanifold of the moduli space associated to the fundamental group of a punctured Riemann surface (the space of representations of this fundamental group into a compact connected Lie group). This Lagrangian submanifold is obtained as the fixed-point set of an anti-symplectic involution defined on the moduli space. The notion of decomposable representation provides a geometric interpretation of this Lagrangian submanifold.
We prove a conjecture of Barraud-Cornea for orientable Lagrangian surfaces. As a corollary, we obtain that displaceable Lagrangian 2--tori have finite Gromov width. In order to do so, we adapt the pearl complex of Biran-Cornea to the non-monotone situation based on index restrictions for holomorphic discs.
We investigate the question of whether the spectral metric on the orbit space of a fiber in the disk cotangent bundle of a closed manifold, under the action of the compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group, is bounded. We utilize wrapped Floer cohomology to define the spectral invariant of an admissible Lagrangian submanifold within a Weinstein domain. We show that the pseudo-metric derived from this spectral invariant is a valid $Ham$-invariant metric. Furthermore, we establish that the spectral metric on the orbit space of an admissible Lagrangian is bounded if and only if the wra…
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
We define new Hamiltonian isotopy invariants for a monotone Lagrangian torus embedded in a symplectic 4-manifold. We show that, in the standard symplectic 4-space, these invariants distinguish a monotone Clifford torus from a Chekanov torus.
Let L be a D-dimensional submanifold of a 2D-dimensional exact symplectic manifold (M, w) and let f be a symplectic diffeomorphism onf M. In this article, we deal with the link between the dynamics of f restricted to L and the geometry of L (is L Lagrangian, is it smooth, is it a graph...?). We prove different kinds of results. - for D=3, we prove that if a torus that carries some characteristic loop, then either L is Lagrangian or the restricted dynamics g of f to L can not be minimal (i.e. all the orbits are dense) with (g^k) equilipschitz; - for a Tonelli Hamiltonian of the cotangent bundle…
Given a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $M$ and a Hamiltonian $H$ on the cotangent space $T^*M$, strictly convex and superlinear in the momentum variables, we prove uniqueness of certain ergodic invariant Lagrangian graphs within a given homology or cohomology class. In particular, in the context of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems, our result implies global uniqueness of Lagrangian KAM tori with rotation vector $ρ$. This result extends generically to the $C^0$-closure of KAM tori.
We give a complete characterization of those disk bundles over surfaces which embed as rationally convex strictly pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We recall some classical obstructions and prove some deeper ones related to symplectic and contact topology. We explain the close connection to Lagrangian surfaces with isolated singularities and develop techniques for constructing such surfaces. Our proof also gives a complete characterization of Lagrangian surfaces with open Whitney umbrellas, answering a question first posed by Givental in 1986.
Fix a symplectic K3 surface X homologically mirror to an algebraic K3 surface Y by an equivalence taking a graded Lagrangian torus L in X to the skyscraper sheaf of a point y of Y. We show there are Lagrangian tori with vanishing Maslov class in X whose class in the Grothendieck group of the Fukaya category is not generated by Lagrangian spheres. This is mirror to a statement about the `Beauville--Voisin subring' in the Chow groups of Y, and fits into a conjectural relationship between Lagrangian cobordism and rational equivalence of algebraic cycles.
We present techniques, inspired by monodromy considerations, for constructing compact monotone Lagrangians in certain affine hypersurfaces, chiefly of Brieskorn-Pham type. We focus on dimensions 2 and 3, though the constructions generalise to higher ones. The techniques give significant latitude in controlling the homology class, Maslov class and monotonicity constant of the Lagrangian, and a range of possible diffeomorphism types; they are also explicit enough to be amenable to calculations of pseudo-holomorphic curve invariants. Applications include infinite families of monotone Lagrangian $…
We show that the space of anti-symplectic involutions of a monotone $S^2\times S^2$ whose fixed points set is a Lagrangian sphere is connected. This follows from a stronger result, namely that any two anti-symplectic involutions in that space are Hamiltonian isotopic.
In this note we define the notion of collarable slices of Lagrangian submanifolds. Those are slices of Lagrangian submanifolds which can be isotoped through Lagrangian submanifolds to a cylinder over a Legendrian embedding near a contact hypersurface. Such a notion arises naturally when studying intersections of Lagrangian submanifolds with contact hypersurfaces. We then give two explicit examples of Lagrangian disks in $\mathbb{C}^2$ transverse to $S^3$ whose slices are non-collarable.
